as much as noelle is a fake idgafer i think we do need to draw attention to kris too

like they step into noelle's house and immediately half the narration is like "oh yeah this tree is climbable. that one isn't. the closet is a good hiding spot (and it smells like noelle). *takes a pencil without even thinking about it*

they apparently spent the cyber city segment constantly looking over at noelle like they wanted to tell her something. they blush when susie mentions their ferris wheel pic with noelle.

is there any way for ir!Kris to like. Lose awareness. So they can't see the shit that's happening? How much pain are they in? What does the thorn feel like? What would happen if another character tried to pull the thorn out?

that would be nice, huh? they wish they could. they wish they could just close their eyes, let themself drift off into unconsciousness, stop feeling the pain of the thorny vines constricting around their limbs and squeezing down their torso. it almost feels like they're climbing up their throat.

but no, they can't fade out of this awful reality. the body is theirs and they're not watching from the backseat - they're very much driving, it's just that the movements their hands make are not their own. even when they want to pass out from pain or exhaustion, they can't. it's like the opposite of eyes closing on their own when you're tired.

maybe they could just stop listening to everything around them, dissociate as much as they can by hearing sounds instead of words. but they don't feel like they have the right. right now, they have such a potential for hurting everyone this thing is talking with through their mouth. they don't have the luxury of not paying attention. they were stupid, stupid, stupid - they can at most pay attention.

as for someone else pulling out the thorn, i'd imagine they want that so much because it would at least stop this particular layer of hell. they want someone to take it out - since they can't, what with them unable to control their body at all anymore, and the soul not having the ability of taking it out - and destroy it, set it on fire if they have to. they want to shout out to anyone to do it, just yank that wretched and awful thing out of their skin. they'd be ready to beg for it. but they can't.

maybe someone will notice. be able to get close enough without getting hurt to hurt them. this, at least, feels like it hasn't changed - people close to them always get hurt because of them, after all

Does Noelle find out about the Dark Worlds during her investigation of Kris in Ironrose?

she finds out way before!

the split-off point for iron rose is kris putting the thorn in their hand instead of hers but the whole conversation leading up to it still happens - she's still fully aware that kris seemingly read her mind, that it all really happened, it was real, or that it couldn't be what kris really wanted. why else would they do all this but put the thorn in their own hand instead? she remembers how numbing but still painful it felt

and noelle is smart, and has known kris for a long time. she already thought kris was acting off, unlike themself. it's not a stretch for her to figure out at least the contours of what's going on. and is kris is seemingly possessed, they why can't that bizarre world have been more than a dream? (she doesn't want to think about it. because it means she hurt real people - way more people than just berdly. but she can't help but do so anyway)

she obviously doesn't know the details but she's bound to find them out through keeping an eye on kris. though she probably gets very scared the first time she reenters the dark world; it almost feels like icy air is still lingering around her

I think that like, okay so obvs kris can't use magic, both because (not a monster) and (giving him the ability to use magic undermines the more subtle power of ACTing) but, The soul has "magic" and possibly uniquely, their magic doesn't come from the dark world. We don't know how it works outside the dark world, but like, at minimum, it was capable of drawing out the power of the thorn ring to, or manifesting independently, the wind that showed up during the snowgrave route. Beyond that, it's light at minimum manifests as something antithetical to the dark worlds (Light is like, reality, darkness is fantasy, so the SOUL from a higher (more real) reality is obviously more light than the light world) In addition, soul magic, which uhhh. The extent of that is, like, a question of how diegetic you want the gameplay to be, so I won't speak further on it. Did the spamton fight involve shooting yellow bullets? idk! Either way, there's something to be said of the idea that like, Kris is a cage, but also post-Mantle, they're a sheath. The obvious implication of that is that the SOUL is a sword. It's on some level a weapon, particularly the snowgrave player, and it's nature is related to that purpose. The soul manifesting some kinda like, cutting magic, ala what was sort of implied to be happening in the genocide route, sheer malice manifesting as increased damage. With the sheathe under control of the sword, I think the soul getting to manifest itself more directly, both within and without the dark world helps to convey that the soul has "free reign" now while also giving the opportunity to up the horror elements of snowgrave.

this is a really good ask, i kept it in my inbox for a while cuz i wanted to answer it well (sorry to keep you waiting anon!)

yeah, kris can't use magic. it's actually been a bit of a throughline for me to make the +12 to magic the thornring has a bit deal in the way that kris's body is not meant to be trying to utilize it. they feel fatigued all the time, like their whole being is wading through water. still, no magic magic

soul magic though as always poses an interesting avenue. i have something i'm actively pondering that uses the deeper connection of the soul to its vessel to strengthen kris's attacks. because you very accurately pointed out that right now, that's all kris is for. they're no longer just a puppet - they're a weapon

ok ok . so listen. hear me out. this inspoed by this one twt art. but what if the thornring/increased control of kris caused them to get magic. like a twisted kind of magic that takes away their life force. makes them regret ever wishing for it. and/or, they get wings that they ofc cannot use, as a mockery of being a bird in a cage? also, would kris pass out often due to not being able to eat? Or, would the soul keep puppeting them like that? just throwing stuff out there :3

i want to maintain kris's humanity here though because at the end of the day they're being controlled by a human soul and the ring is just an item; i'll at most dabble with soul magic, however much actual magic is in that (more on that pending, it's in the works). the horror is less losing your humanity due to the horrors - because from context clues kris does not seem to like their humanity that much in the first place - but the humanity is the horrors instead. they can't get away from it. they're disgustingly, humanly violent because of the soul

as for the second part of the ask - kris is nooot doing so hot. i'm still ironing out how diegetic/non-diegetic the fuller control the soul has now is; because on one hand it is very much a player too curious to let any stone stay unturned but on the other, this kind of deeper connection with its vessel causing the soul to feel what kris feels would be fun

i think i'm gonna go with the second one and say that the soul does feed kris but a bit like when you put food into your rpg character to regenerate some health; it's enough to keep kris on their feet but it's certainly not enough for a growing teen, they do not feel that sated. they're very very tired. it's exhausting having to keep going because the thing that's got you in its grasp won't let you eat or rest until you're about to keep over
