there's a certain quality the harmonies of like... early to mid 2000s alt rock has. which i am obsessed with... like i wanna do that. i NEED to figure out how to write harmonies that sound like that
#ari opinion hour#i sort of understand it but not necessarily well enough to do it on command#i think i sort of achieved the sound of it with my blaseball winter exchange song i did for snow but specifically only in the very last bit#like only with the 'im not alive anymore' part#(which sidenote i wish id had the second half faster + w more drive but its not like that was like a full recording which i could do)#i think i just need my music to have more teeth in general cause it scratches an itch that i think i must have developed due to some aspect#of music school. its probably my dissatisfaction with the attitudes in the classical world#<- which understand i say that in the same way that like my jazz prof does. the classical world doesnt have enough teeth nor enough#understanding of the way in which music is like. another art. and art needs to be able to have teeth and use elements normally regarded as#''undesirable'' on purpose because art is there to make you feel emotions and not just the positive ones and not just sadness or anger in#terms of the negative ones#art is there to make u feel ALL extant emotions and that includes boredom disgust fear jealousy pity cowardice apathy overwhelmedness etc#also the classical world i find often forgets what the word ''play'' means#i am of the opinion that perfection is a waste of time if i wanted perfect i'd ask a computer to do it for me. i want real#anyway. i forgot what this post was even about lol point is i need to figure out how to write harmonies that have that soaring quality that#like. you can hear it in like helena by mcr and wake me up by evanescence and stuff. and frankly most of the songs on three cheers for swee#revenge which i am listening to now for the first time. i need to learn more about this stuff maybe ill listen to the evanescence album tha#song is from next.#or something i should really be working on my essay but theres no way i wont have it done in time which is good i think i just mostly have#to worry about sources and stuff but even that should be relatively easy i think

How can so many people complain about missing pre 2020 fandoms while furiously hating on those who used to run them
Mha "cringe" cosplayers, omegaverse ficwriters and fans, ao3/wattpad chronic users, artists who made those "derp humor" templates, fanon artists/enjoyers, comshippers, fujoshis with everlasting love to teacher x student stuff, hetalia/ch/cb fans etc etc, fandoms would be NOTHING without them
Our culture is not a trend for those who shame and harass everyone
#cringe is a term for those who are corrupted by inner shame#fandom culture#fandom#cringe culture is dead#tiktok is a plague#staring at those tiktok “weird kid” wannabes who insult proshippers like you're a BULLY and you're not one of us shut up#pre 2020 fandom#proship#proship safe#fujoshi#undertale frans#sorry for bit of negativity everyone

i’ve been thinking about the pokémon memes where it’s like playing off of that one quote that’s like ‘truly strong trainers should try to win using their favorites’ and it’s like ‘ok well my favorite is [something blatantly overpowered]’ and it’s got me curious. how many people genuinely love pokémon that also happen to be really strong competitively?
so if you will. pick a favorite pokémon (for any reason! whether it’s cuteness or strength or nostalgia etc. no judgment) then go here https://www.smogon.com/dex/sv/pokemon/ and look it up
(you’ll see something that looks like this. see where it says tier and has some gibberish afterwards? don’t worry if you don’t know what that means but tell me what the letters/words are)
also if there are multiple forms and the distinction matters to you make sure you get the right one lol cuz the tiering can be different
edit: forgot to mention i mean specifically in SV! which is what comes up by default. rip every pokémon that either isn’t in SV (it’ll say ‘national dex’) or used to be better but has since fallen off relative to new pokémon
#pokémon#pokemon#pokeposting#if you want to know what those terms mean#AG stands for anything goes. very few pokémon have ever been in here#the absolute elite. too powerful too broken#Ubers is below that it’s like the normal ban zone where most overpowered pokémon go#OU stands for overused it’s like the ‘standard’ top tier#below that is UU (underused) then RU (rarely used) then ZU (zero used) then PU (this is a pun. pee-yew. because they stink)#LC is little cup which is basically Baby Fight™️ and NFE is not fully evolved so like babies and teenagers basically#and anything with BL (ban list) at the end is like a weird in between state#where they’re too powerful for the tier they were supposed to be in but not good enough for anyone in the tier above them to want to use em#if you’re thinking these are insane ridiculous terms then i agree#slight edit i think i initially got the order of ZU and PU mixed up. so many tiers with negative mean names…#i fixed it in the poll though#that is to say PU is above ZU#and if you’re curious how tiers work. the tier a pokémon is ‘in’ refers to the lowest it can possibly go#but you can use it in any of the higher tiers if you want to (it’s just more likely to get stomped on)#so like if a pokémon is OU that means you can’t use it in UU or RU or NU etc etc#but you can use it in Ubers if you want in addition to OU#most people i believe play in OU bc there’s arguably the greatest game balance#you’re allowed to use powerful pokémon but it isn’t as run wild go crazy no rules as Ubers#i mean even Ubers has rules but. fewer of em#AG has only one rule and that’s ‘you can’t force a standstill endless battle’ lol. otherwise it’s the wild west#OU is popular bc it’s a fine mix of rules that keep the game fair fun and competitive#and pokémon that are powerful and fun to use in battle#but if you have a different style you might like playing in a lower tier where everybody is super weak#*syndrome voice* but if everyone is weak then no one is…#it’s all about scale it’s all relative#edit: KNEW i was forgetting some nuance. some pokémon are stuck in the past aka not available in SV so they’ll say ‘national dex’ oops

Disney, releasing Wish: "so it's all about legacy--the new generation surpassing the old, overcoming the evils perpetuated by them, relinquishing singular power... and there's an old man in a tower, uh... animal sidekick, i guess..., ah... magic...?
Miyazaki, just out of frame, sledgehammer raised:
#the boy and the heron#not tagging wish 'cause i'm being a little acidic#this isn't to be negative in the slightest--I really respect both films--but it's interesting to see how visceral boy+H gets with its story#what evils have to be rejected and what they represent--and how characters and the world suffer from those evils--as well as how the whole#'rejecting' part goes. in terms of animation powerhouses discussing their legacies - disney and miyazaki both - I find it interesting that#one makes a pretty safe and nostalgic movie about imagination and dreams; the other is a long trudge through the land of the dead.#b+h is a hard watch - and a look at the legacy of a man questioning his whole purpose in the world - after his cultural touchstones#have long passed by. Mahito needs to understand his grief to keep living--but if he drowns in it he'll just continue the cannibalistic and#violent world of his granduncle. how the hell do you make art when the trauma of your entire life has colored it forever? How can anyone?#maybe after a while... it's time to detonate that damn tower and keep living.#this is to say#if you have enough money to make whatever you want#Make It Fucking Count

who up grieving their faded hyperfixations because there is unfortunately nothing that makes you enjoy living more than being hyperfixated on a good piece of media and now it’s just gone.
#i know people use the term hyperfixation loosely and i do the same sometimes#but when i say stranger things consumed my entire life for over a year#i am not exaggerating#i couldn’t have a fucking conversation unless it was about st#i could not control my infodumping#didn’t listen to music unless i could relate it to a character#cared about this show more than about my real life#and in many ways that’s unhealthy and had negative effects on my life and relationships#but there is also nothing else like that feeling#and now it’s just gone#and i have to wait for the next one

here are some "quick" rvb restoration thoughts before i go to bed that i may expand upon later, in no particular order:
this movie was ABOUT tucker but tucker is not in it. there is a tucker sized hole. we see tucker only a little bit more than we see donut, but tucker is still there the whole time!!! at the beginning, i was excited for the tucker whump, but does it count if not a single character reacts to the truly horrifying news that their friend has been controlled for a few months by eight or nine ais, at least two of which have tried to kill him and everyone you love before? like even if they had retconned red and blue teams being friends (which they didn't), you're telling me that we never get to see wash's reaction to this news? carolina's? two people who lost a different friend to this exact gruesome process of de-personing? no one ever tells carolina that tucker is in there and no one objects when tex goes to fucking decapitate him? like i get that caboose was the only person to see that tucker was actually still in there, and he can't really be trusted to communicate things clearly, but they could have even just included some sort of discussion where they decide that they think that tucker would rather be dead than be dragged along in this parody of life (and with the way the ais were torturing him, he probably would have agreed.)
speaking of caboose knowing that tucker is still in there - grif and simmons abandoning caboose rubbed me SO wrong. usually if a character is trying not to involve themselves, they'll "run away" to the nearest place to hide, not GET ON A SHIP TO FLY AWAY LEAVING CABOOSE TO DIE AT POSSESSED TUCKER'S HANDS. i get why they (the writers) did it, but that doesn't mean i have to like it lol
why weren't they FRIENDS ANYMORE
where was donut
what was that wash b-plot. what did the wash b-plot add?? what it did: make me feel weird about dr. grey's character, kill doc off screen, and make wash useless in the main plot. what it did not do: make sense. when did wash get injured post chorus? why is he hallucinating, period? why was he institutionalized? (and why is the room number the same as his prison number?) why did they spend so much time on it for it to have no real conclusion? they didn't need to have this weird "wash is hanging onto the past via doc" plot to have the carolina-wash-freelancer ghost heart-to-heart. (also i have never laughed so hard as when i saw the post pointing out that they left wyoming out bc neither my friend or i noticed lol) why wouldn't he know there was a manual way to activate the recovery beacon since he was LITERALLY recovery one? so many questions, no answers. what have you done to my boy, burnie.
the pacing was ATROCIOUS. nothing happened for the first half of the movie, a bunch of stuff happened in the second half, and none of it felt resolved.
where was donut
why was everyone separated at the beginning? why was no one worried about it? where was donut? where was carolina? why was no one worried about where tucker was? had caboose been the lone blue for the few months that tucker was gone and wash was hospitalized? genuinely, my friend and i thought that the reds and caboose had been mind wiped and dropped into their undisclosed locations without knowing why, and the plot was gonna be them all reuniting and piecing together what had happened and getting tucker back. alas.
it felt like it was the grif-simmons-caboose show, which was interesting because that's not a problem i feel like i've had before with this show. even if i saw less of a particular character than i wanted to. they usually have a pretty good balance of characters and this movie felt like they suddenly Realized how many characters they had and fumbled it.
i did actually really like the tex reveal that was BOSS i LOVED IT
i have more thoughts but this is far too long already so i'll save it for later lmao
#my brain is collapsing with the number of thoughts i have#they're not all negative#its just that the negative ones are longer and more fun to talk about lol#most of these are tuckington focused bc. cmon guys. its on the tin#the no long term consequences for tucker also was weird#the man was tortured for A LITERAL DECADE#if you have tucker using the same language about ais and hallucination doc and wash then there should be similar consequences#rvb#rvb restoration#rvb restoration spoilers#red vs blue

yall realize u can just not like the word "enby" and dont have to make up some complete bullshit about how its "AcTuAlLy BaD" right.
"its infantilizing/demeaning!!!" its LITERALLY just the "nb" acronym. all it is is just saying the letters "n" and "b." and spelling it like its a word. if the phonetics of it sound a little too childish or cutesy to you or whatever, thats literally just your personal connotation with the sounds. it is not some objective thing about the term. theres nothing inherently kiddy or cute about the term. calm the fuck down.
#its one thing to say to YOU it FEELS too much like something thatd go along the lines of boy/girl#vs saying the term IS [whatever negative quality you just FEEL about it]#i seen someone saying theyd shoot someone if they use the term like. hello what the fuck us wrong with you#enby#nonbinary#nb#i also saw someone say that enby is too “feminine” like HUH ??????????#why are people so fucking batshit about queer terminology

gentle skin to skin contact is a rare gift in this movie . lucie’s [human] voice gave anna the power to persevere, not the closeness to seeing something otherworldly. the voice of god and the voice of lucie are similar in what they inspire; human connection is instinctive to want and the voice of a friend and the feeling of love is endlessly more (traditionally positively) moving than a mystical idea emphasizing the loss of life
#i think a lot of this is arguable actually#martyrs 2008#being moved by something otherworldly or/and nonhuman is also very powerful but very isolating? only in terms of things that aren’t#religions really since religion is driven (i may be wrong) by the fact that it’s a *group* of people who believe and not just like . one.#again i might be wrong about that . i don’t know enough#rereading and sctual a mystical idea emphasizing loss of life is actually very powerful But driven by fear/negative emotions? maybe .#definitely not always though#martyrs#new french extremity#this post doesn’t make sense the more i reread it i#i’m just glad i got to get all of it out . my mom is refusing to let me talk about this movie to her

ok so we're all in agreement that the way the show is handling trixie and matthew's storyline is complete shite right?
#call the midwife#call the midwife series 13#don't usually like putting negativity in tags but.... i am seriously so frustrated by this lol#not only does it just... not make sense with EITHER characters#it also just feels like a totally lazy way to add drama...#like there's totally a way they could have added a money-issues storyline that could have been really interesting!#but pointless miscommunication? matthew being a chauvinistic dickhead? trixie have barely any of her own agency??? nah nah#fuck that lol#also looks like they're going to make her return to alcoholism in the finale which is completely annoying#like there were whole SERIES dedicated to her getting help with it!!#and it was amazing! it was one of the few times i've seen alcoholism depicted with such care on screen PARTICULARLY w/ a female character#uguhughuu idk#i'm just ranting here soz lol#and like ctm has made some very strange choices in terms of characters and plotlines in the past#but this one really feels like it's taking the piss imo lol...

i've been reading some essays about the history of what is called 'modern sikh theology' and how the idea of sikhi having a theology - which is a specifically western phenomenon, a concept of 'theology' as a distinct idea - was created out of the singh sabha movement from the late 19th and early 20th century whose primary historical-material goals were to create an interpretation of sikhi that would allow sikhs to retain a special status under the british colonial rule, aligning ourselves with christian ideas and understandings of what a religion is, what a theology is, and to emphasize our difference and therefore superiority to both hindus and muslims in the eyes of the british empire. and how the ideas of the singh sabha movement have become the primary ways in which we understand sikhi, the language we use to talk about sikhi in english, the ways in which we choose to translate sikhi and the teachings of the gurus into english. prior to that the concept of 'gurmat' (the teachings of the gurus, the fundamental ideas of sikhi) did not have an english translation which it is now equated to 'theology'. like prior to this sikhi was not emphasized as a monotheistic religion, because those terms and concepts are english ones, and these ideas have penetrated our understanding of sikhi as sikhs even when reading the original punjabi text, within our communities. and i'm kind of interested in a way of conceptualizing sikhi that does not appeal to western understandings of religion or theology, that does not necessarily try to situate itself as inherently distinct from either islam or hinduism but part of a greater cultural continuum, while acknowledging (and reiterating, expanding) the doctrinal emphases on equality among all, and the explicit rejection of caste that gurmat takes. because we know that while casteism is rejected from a religious standpoint, within sangat and langar, it absolutely is still present outside of the gurdwara within our communities. my own understanding of sikhi is monist or pantheistic, and from what i have read prior to british rule in punjab that kind of understanding of sikhi was more common; it has been heavily compared with the vedanta school as well as sufism, and both are practices i feel a lot of intellectual fondness for. and i feel incredibly limited by my extremely rudimentary punjabi language abilities, and i feel that without gaining that specific language knowledge there really isn't a way for me to engage more deeply with this subject because it will always be filtered through english.
#1. i wish my babaji was still here so i could talk to him... he was gyani and read so much and knew so much and could teach me so much#2. i desperately need to improve my punjabi and gurmukhi#a problem is - which is brought up in these essays - that understanding sikhi through historical material terms is viewed negatively#by many sikhs and so trying to talk about these things as existing within a historical context rathern than a religious one upsets people

i feel like it must be said that i very much enjoy mithrun, he's one of my favorite characters, but the way the community at large handles him with safety gloves as if he'll break at the slightest criticism is very frustrating considering his role in the story is that of an antagonistic force
#like. i think its fascinating how ppl forget that he and the canaries are very much the antagonists of dm#no hes not the villain. no hes not the bbg the gang wants to defeat#but in terms of literary roles. he is 100% the antagonist#in that he directly opposes what the protagonists (laios + marcille)#are trying to do#yes he is incredibly sympathetic and enjoyable as a character#yes he has done things that are considered to be negative to the protagonists and kabru in particular#these are not mutually exclusive#part of the reason why i enjoy mithrun so much is bc of how layered he is#not even touching on how hes also a critique of how the disenfranchised still benefit and perpetuate their privilege#he is someone who is disabled and treated poorly by the system#but he is also a key factor in maintaining that very same system's status quo#and not unknowingly. he even says to marcille that he knows hes lucky in that one extra#dunmeshi#chattering#does this make sense. i have so many thoughts ping ponging off the walls of my brain rn
