I wanted to keep it short but I am an animation nerd so I will yap sorry

Tldr: The anime exists, I am glad we have two medias to experience the story differently. I like some ideas, hate some others. It's ok, it never was here to replace the manga for me.

Anyways! I can be the biggest critic ever over random details as I can have "I know this is an animated serie with a budget" googles. The later being the one I have most with tbhk.

I won't talk much about the choices story wise. An animated adapation is not supposed to have as much details as the manga. I am upset we didn't get some stuff (young exorcist arc biggest rip) even if it's pretty obvious it was a "we are testing the water" choice coming from the producers for season 1 (I won't expand much about this expect if asked but yes, it is definitely from a marketing standpoint for me, Hanako is the face of the animated serie even more than for the manga)

I think they are okay timing wise most of the time. And I am even okay with them switching orders for some scenes to respect cliffhangers for episodes.

I was never expecting a mind blowing adapation in term of animation when I saw that Lerche was the studio in 2020(I am talking ONLY about animation here, not other departments/jobs I will come back on those later)

Lerche is not a "bad" studio, but it's a rather low budget one compared to most popular animes. They are smart with their budget I think, but like, the animation is lacking ofc. Especially in terms of weights, fighting scenes especially are awful in my opinion.

My main problem with the anime is not even this, It is the lack of direction/storyboard and layout in some scenes.

But before that I really need to talk about what I like a lot. I think a lot of backgrounds are really pretty, they know how to blend cgi pretty well with the artstyle! I really like how they color some too. The hospital was so pretty for example!

There is ofc a direction for the anime, because some shots are reallyyyy good in some details.

The first one is not even a mind blowing shot at all, I just think it's clever to see how the relationships between the near and far shores are disconnected. And the second one is just making me cry. Nene thanking Mei-chan for creating Shijima-san and because she lives through her art. It's so cool!

Aoi's hands reaching for Akane's face making water fall from his face like tears! Love it a lot! And I am sure there are more great little details like this!

I love the colors change for Akane's power too! Really great idea to make the viewer understand right away!

Hakubo's introduction scene! Really cool!

Which also, shows a subtle artstyle change. The lines are thinner, and the animation is different. Idk if a lot of people know this, but animation studios rarely work alone, and Lerche show us that they work with other studios in the credits! (It's common in a lot of series, I can't check rn but I am pretty sure there are some in Vietnam for example! It's called "provision of service" (not sure with the english translation rip) most of the time it's to animate in another country some stuff (or give them a whole department for the whole series/movie) to pay less ahah :')))

So idk which studio it is but shoutout to them bc it was the best sequence for this new season for me. (This is mostly a suposition I may be wrong! Anyways they changed the artstyle for this scene and it slaps)

Which brings me, to the things I don't like :)))

The main thing is, a lack of storyboard decision sometimes. I know most people like to see the exact same panel animated, I am personnaly 50/50 on this for the reason I said earlier. Like, give some fun for the storyboarders! Animation is a different media than manga, have fun with it. This one is explainable quickly bc of the budget but my animation lover heart is sad that they try to stick too much to the manga in a lot of scenes in my opinion. Which then invite everyone to directly compare the two.

And when I was talking about layout, I am talking about scenes like this

So this shot, went through the director then the storyboarders then the layout artist. And no one saw a problem with it? Which mostly make me think that they probably skipped either one or two of those "usual steps" but like seriously I can't see why a layout artist would keep this one. (I don't remember if it's true or not but I think it happens sometimes that animators have to do a shot with nothing done before)

To explain Layout just in case, it's to put the characters in background to respect the size and coherence of everything, in some studios they are the ones doing the background too for example :00

And tbhk's backgrounds.. are 3d :'))) at least in all this sequence.

I can spot 3d directly personnaly (since it's my job) so idk how obvious it is, but it's really visible to me on the columns behind them here.

And I absolutely don't get why on the previous shot they decided to put the characters where they are with acamera like this ToT far away shot (my vocabulary is dying sorry) are to show distance between characters, but like it is really ugly here :'))) (think Madoka Magica, Shaft is a studio known for doing far away shot to create an eeriness in their series when the characters are talking so you feel out of place, posing a camera is a choice)

And the scene after was... a choice. Don't put the characters so far away from the hole if after you need them to stand up to go to it. Like it's a random walk in the park when one of them is on the brink of death

My other main problem, is the lack of Compositing (image post production)

This image is a good example of it. I understand that they can't do a whole colorscript for each episode (they clearly don't have the budget rip) but some retakes in Post Prod would be nice. Sometimes there is not even some depth to the background, the characters seem on the same "plane", once again no depth at all. The images don't seem to have been put through compositing at all, no noise, no particles, no lightings shift etc

Every problems can be explained easily by a lack of budget btw so this mostly make me sad. I think the artists at Lerche are great, some scenes prove it, the problems are always coming from producers most of the time but they have way too many choices to do because they don't have a budget big enough to do an artstyle as complicated as this one.

I like most of the sound designs too! The vas are reallyyyyy good, they are a big reason why I watch the anime tbh

And I will stop for now, but I am "ok" with the anime. I am glad it still exists, I like a lot of stuff about it and I am also capable of not comparing it to the manga. I can experience the story differently, I see it as something more with the manga, not here to replace it :))))

I've been thinking a lot about Hakubo lately because of the season's annoncement and the importance of flowers for him.

His youngest appearance is him watering lotuses showned by the only thing he could have called his family

Flowers crowns have always been associated with Sumire in his life.

They are also always showed next to the Kannagi statuettes. He even brings flowers to Sumire's when he is not able to hold them for too long.

It's the first things he offers to Aoi, having the whole boat filled with them, to calm her after bringing her into an unknown place. Knowing that Sumire used to love them a lot and not understanding why she doesn't seem pleased with this offering.

Hakubo also spared the children who were weaving flowers baskets, creating the school rumor and tradition because of it.

He is the mystery confirmed to have been assigned by Sakura who is clearly associated to flowers (hence the Cherry tree in this chapter guiding Sumire to make them reunite)

Flowers are a leitmotiv throughout Hakubo's whole arc especially compared to any other mysteries which don't have any flowers in their boundaries, his being the only one with so many in it. (Yako's doesn't have flowers when it's under her command)

I just think it's so sad that he can't be in contact with something that has been present his whole life and reminds him of the only person important to him.
