tgcf book spoilers, but one mu qing and xie lian snippet that I think about a lot is this one, at the start of xie lian’s second banishment when he’s surprised to hear mu qing being described as generous and kind:

as opposed to this memory from before his first ascension when mu qing started giving out cherries to the kids in the city:

I think it just really goes to show 1) how deeply mq’s actions truly affected xl and what he thought of him, but also 2) just how different mq and xl are fundamentally in the way that they think and approach things.

I don’t have a lot of commentary on xl that hasn’t already been said, but bc we get the story from xl’s pov, we see a lot of mq’s actions being framed as selfish or suspicious (which is fair, bc again, we know how much his actions hurt xl), but we also see a lot of misconstrued kindness, like in book 8 where it’s revealed that he knocked out fx in order to save him. it’s also pretty obvious how much mq still cares abt xl, with how quickly he volunteers as fu yao and the lengths he goes to protect him when he deems hc a threat, so I also think it’s very likely that mq leaving the trio first was exactly what he said it was — that he thought becoming a junior official, ascending quickly, would be the best way to take care of not just his mother, but also xl, fx, the king and queen, and himself, and so in a way, him leaving was him acting on his kindness. but ofc it doesn’t work out, and he spends the next 800 years fighting w/ fx about it, defending himself, his decisions, and his kindness, and nitpicking the accuracies of his statues while he himself remains completely misunderstood by the two people he probably cares abt the most.

and idk, I guess I just think that’s probably a really lonely way to spend 800 years.

While Edwin’s more than a bit stand-offish and definitely not the most tactful, I never did get the sense that he doesn’t like people - in fact, I think his insistence that he’s “not good with people” and his general emotional detachment/disinterest has a lot more to do with his assumption that they don’t or won’t like him.

And while that’s very sad to think about… it’s not as if his belief here is hard to understand, considering his past experiences. But it’s left him quite guarded and lonely, and of course, the more he isolates himself from people other than Charles (and even here, he allows himself little vulnerability), the more he reinforces this fear that people won’t like him, and the less he allows himself to properly sympathize or empathize with others, which is why his friendships with Crystal and Niko and Monty (short-lived as that was) are so important. Once he started to let some of those walls down, to not be so scared of vulnerability and to be around people who allow themselves to feel and want so readily (to live! who allow themselves to live without fear of loving!), he’s really not nearly as bad with people as he seems to think he is - and, in fact, he’s actually quite good at saying or doing the right thing for them when it really counts.

I’ve been having a giggle over the fact that Great and Tyme will do it on Great’s pool table and then I realized something. In some of the sex scenes Tyme & Great are wearing necklaces and in others they’re not. So now I believe Great MIGHT be seeing two different times he has sex with Tyme when he sees himself sleeping with him in the future.

When Great’s about to kiss Tyme these are all shots that are intercut throughout. In the top two they’re wearing necklaces but in the bottom they aren’t. This could also just mean they take off the necklaces at some point or even that it’s a continuity error (lol) BUT I also think the top two look like they’re happening on the pool table while the bottom one is on a black bed (which has to be Great’s…) which could mean they’re two separate instances. Again, they could just be going at it all over Great’s house but I still think it could be two different scenes. If anything about the multiple timeline theories are true too then maybe these are even diff timelines somehow??? But I still feel like I don’t know enough to confidently say that… since BOC is showing ep4 in the theater with an 18+ rating I’m assuming we’re gonna see Great and Tyme have sex so maybe I can find out how insane of a theory this actually is next week

I’m also fairly sure they’re wearing the same outfits here (from the trailer) as they are at the end of ep3 which means this could be coming next ?? And at the end of ep3 neither of them were wearing necklaces which MEANS maybe the no-necklace sex scene happens in ep4 but also like. People change clothes so if they don’t sleep together right after where ep3 left off then ?/$:?;! I also think if these are separate sex scenes the likelihood that we get everything at once might not be high so maybe one (them without necklaces) comes before the other (them with necklaces) and Great gets his ass eaten while they’re wearing necklaces so do with that what u will btw

In conclusion this is how I feel trying to analyze minimal info from Great’s flashes of of sex with Tyme and just theorizing abt 4 minutes in general:
