Bedelia was the one who spotted Hannibal’s “human veil”, coined the phrase to his face even, and Hannibal liked that. “It’s nice when someone sees us,” says Bedelia, someone who actually would prefer not to be seen all that much. She understood him well enough to know that she was, in her words, speaking to and offering healing to a “version” of him, and even then, she liked him and wanted the real person inside to get what he needed.

Will was in a position to like, even love Hannibal in S1, too, but once he intuited and remembered more of the truth of his actions and identity, he struggled constantly to reconcile his delight at being seen with his horror at what he saw underneath the veil. Unlike Bedelia, he loved that horror too, but once again, Will Graham + moral conflict = OTP.

Bedelia lived with Hannibal behind the veil for months as a companion, lover, witness, therapist, and murder collaborator, but it was not a world she enjoyed after all. When Hannibal breaks the fourth wall and says, “Let it be a fairy tale, then: Once Upon a Time...” a curtain is drawn aside to a ballroom whirlwind sparkling with champagne and sequins. The blood comes later, as it does in so many fairy tales. Bedelia will not be lopping off toes to fit into any glass slipper. Will’s shoes are full of blood because he keeps denying the slipper fits.

By the time Will sees Bedelia lecture on her book in S3B, she’s still obviously got part of herself wrapped up in the intensity of what she experienced with Hannibal, but she processes that by turning it into a story, a professional experience, with a hint of twisted, sensuous romance. She’s not showing off any scars, she’s presenting a work of artful literature. Ripper-like, in a way! Her nature renders her quite content to leave it at that and be glad of it, but Will is not built that way. He’s obsessed, as Hannibal is obsessed, and that’s something she regards as foolish and dangerous in both of them. Will is offended and feels belittled. She doesn’t disabuse him of that feeling, but rather, prods at it. She possesses empathy and cruelty in equal measure without a trace of self-recrimination, and pities Will that he can’t handle it. It would have been better, she thinks, if Hannibal had eaten him. Digested that vulnerability and chaos. Come out stronger, saner.

Bedelia has her own person suit, but like Hannibal’s, before he was discovered to be the Ripper, hers blends seamlessly with a professional persona. She’s a cool cucumber with very little need to be seen or known herself, and this is where she differs in temperament from both Hannibal and Will. Will’s unarmed by comparison, because he lives in a sea of conflicted emotions underneath a thin, prickly shell. He’s just as bad with boundaries as Hannibal. Bedelia needs boundaries and requires anyone near her to have them as well. Her words and her extra insight are her sword and dagger, and boundaries are her shield. It’s very telling that when Bedelia runs away with Hannibal, it’s at a moment where he is literally and emotionally naked, and she is the one holding a weapon. All of those things turn her on. She feels very strong and sure of herself, and she’s smart enough to know that if she follows her professional curiosity and very evident sexual desire, she’ll have to hold on tightly to those inner strengths to balance it out and survive.

The similarities between Hannibal and Bedelia and Will are so fascinating, and the ways they call each other out on those as well as their elemental differences are intimate in their own way. I could talk about them all day. Honestly I wish they’d worked it out in bed, but um... Will.

Excuse me. I may be dumb, but in … and the Woman Clothed in Sun, we have Bedelia and Will’s conversation about their relationship with Hannibal and it’s going like:

“Bedelia: I wasn’t myself. You were. Even when you weren’t, you were.

Will: I wasn’t wearing adequate armor.

Bedelia: No. You were naked.”

Bedelia tells Will also: “I was with him behind the veil. You were always on the other side.”

I see that people usually understand is that Bedelia was behind the veil with Hannibal when Will never got the chance. 

But when I first heard it, the way I understood it was Bedelia was using a defense mechanism to deal with Hannibal, and Will wasn’t, because with Hannibal, Will had a chance to be who he really was, that’s why he ended being covered with scars.

And when it comes to: “I was with him behind the veil. You were always on the other side.” I understood it was Bedelia was behind the veil with Hannibal for a while, when Will had always been behind the veil, just like Hannibal, Will is wearing a very well tailored person suit, that’s why he was always on the other side.

Can someone tell me if these words can be understood that way, or am I just really stupid to understand it like that?
