Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival (冬至) is a time for families to eat together. One activity that occurs during these get-togethers especially in the Asia and in Overseas Asian communities is the making and eating of Tangyuan (汤圆) or Glutinous Rice Ball, which symbolize reunion. The balls of glutinous rice are cooked in sweet soup or savoury broth but here in Singapore, we typically have them in sweet soup flavoured with ginger.

Tau Suan (绿豆爽/豆爽) or Split Mung Bean Sweet Soup is one of the popular Chinese hot items you can find at a dessert stall. Basically, it is just split mung beans, sugar, pandan leaves, water and starch to thicken. For sugar, you can use gula melaka or caramelized regular granulated sugar which not only add fragrance but also colour. Me, I don’t like my soup too gooey so you adjust the amount of potato starch accordingly. I have attached a cooking demonstration video (not mine) if you are interested in trying out the recipe.

Today is Lantern Festival (元宵节). It falls on the 15th day of the new lunar year, which is February 24th this year. The arrival of this day also marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations.

Eating 元宵 is another important Lantern Festival custom. 元宵 or Tang Yuan (汤圆) is made of glutinous rice. The stuffing includes bean paste, black sesame, peanut, various kinds of fruit and so on. The fillings can be either sweet or savoury, depending on what is wrapped inside.

In Chinese, 元 can also mean "first" and 宵 usually refers to "night". So 元宵 literally means the first night that we can see the full moon in the lunar new year. It symbolizes the arrival of spring and the end of the Chinese New Year celebration.
