The 15th day of the first month on the lunar calendar, the first night of the year’s full moon, has long been celebrated as the Lantern Festival. It is the first vital carnival after Chinese New Year, and is also called Yuan Xiao Festival (元宵节), Shang Yuan Jie (上元节). Customs vary widely across China, among them the eating of glutinous rice balls (Tangyuan or Yuanxiao), the admiring of flower lanterns, and dragon and lion dances which are the essentials during the festival.

I shall spare you the wall of texts on the Origin and Development of the Lantern Festival (元宵节). Just go through the summarized history of how the festival evolved starting from the Western Han Dynasty to the present day.

Today’s Lantern Festival (元宵节) is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity. It is time to eat Tangyuan, admire lanterns, guess lantern riddles and watch art performances. Lantern festival in many cities attracts a great number of visitors. Some people happily walk around with a bright small lantern in hand, making the atmosphere especially festive.

Tang Yuan (汤圆) and Yuan Xiao (元宵) are must-have delicious glutinous rice balls eaten during the Lantern Festival and shared within families. Tangyuan is very popular in southern China, but in Northern China people like to eat Yuanxiao. Even a lot of Chinese people think that Yuanxiao and Tangyuan are the same food. Actually, they are very similar; both are sticky rice balls with fillings, but the fundamental differences lie in their making, fillings, cooking, and storage.

Yuan Xiao (元宵) is rolled in a basket; its surface tends to be dry and soft. The first step of making Yuanxiao is preparing the solid fillings, and then it is cut into small pieces. After dipping in water, fillings are rolled in a flat basket containing dry glutinous rice flour. The step is repeated until the wrapper is thick enough; the ball grows into a big, round shape.

Tang Yuan (汤圆) is kneaded by hand; its surface is smooth and glutinous. Tangyuan is made of a glutinous rice wrapper encasing the fillings. The method is like making dumplings, and it is kneaded into a round ball. The 3 in 1 Rice Balls (三合一汤圆) from Mr Bean consisted of bean curd, soya milk and rice balls. The pink ones have peanut in them and black sesame for the white balls.

Lantern Festival 元宵节🏮
Happy Lantern Festival! Technically, the festival was yesterday, but I was out enjoying the dragon lantern parade all night, so I didn't get to finish this until today. Hope everyone is having a wonderful time celebrating! ✨

As today is Lantern Festival (元宵节), mum went to the market to buy Roasted Pork, Char Siu, Pork & Shrimp Dumpling and three packs of rice to offer to the ancestors and gods. After the prayer is done, we will eat these dishes for our lunch and maybe dinner too.

will we be getting drawings of any of the other first few days of the new year? or maybe 元宵节? i love your 春节 and 初一 drawings (and all of your art)!!
hi!!! :D yess I'd love to make more culture-specific art for my modern/teacher AU characters! It's easier for me to do so for my Asian characters since I'm more familiar with them, but I shall try my best to have the other characters have fun celebrating their own holidays and festivals too!!
For you: Valjean celebrating CNY with his family ❤️
They are the real reason why Valjean gives so much money away in red packets 😔 To him, he's simply giving out what he owes his nieces and nephews that he'll never see again.
#usually unmarried people don't give out 红包s but I think Valjean would take over his late brother-in-law's role and give them in his stead#there would barely be anything in there ($2 at most or even just small snacks) but of course the kids would still be elated#but he still feels bad. and now he makes up for it by giving every kid he sees a 红包.#anyways sorry for the Valjean angst 😭 but it was bound to happen#and tysm for the ask <33#les mis#les mis fanart#valjean#syrup art tag

元宵节快乐/happy lantern festival everyone but most importantly, 新年快乐/happy lunar new year! it’s the year of the dragon now and i thought i’d do something special with the chinese mk characters doing a fun lil dragon dance!! i don’t think i’ve discussed this before but mk really helped me in a way to feel connected to my culture and made me want to explore it more in a way i never really felt before, and it makes me proud that there’s a big influence of it in such a prominent western piece of media. i of course have many grievances with it but it still makes me really happy. so here’s all the chinese/chinese-influenced characters in mk1!
+ the non post-processed and non bloom version under the cut!
