The fact that Draco Malfoy is canonically unable to cast a Patronus because he doesn’t have a happy enough memory to use for it is a MAJOR detail. He may be spoiled and doted on at home, and his mom clearly would do anything for him, but any kid with NO memories happy enough to conjure a Patronus whatsoever, is definitely not a kid with parents who are 100% warm and loving. I think this is a big reason why Lucius being full-on abusive is a common trope in fanfiction. There’s plenty of stuff in canon to contradict that - and yet Draco’s lack of Patronus isn’t exactly a point in Lucius’, or Narcissa’s, favor.

TBR: Black Authors Spotlight!
In honor of Black History Month, here's a selection of my mountainous TBR--new works by many fave authors (Okorafor, Emezi, Polk, Solomon, Roanhorse, and Giddings), and many others I am hyped to try (shout-out to Ancrum, Monae, and Shawl especially!).
And honorable mention, too, to P. Djèlí Clark and Suyi Davies Okungbowa, who did not make the TBR list only because I read them last month haha.

after reading new moon i cannot blame bella for developing feelings for jacob.
people always treat her as a villain for this but they forget that she is human AND a teenager. she was depressed, going through some of the worst times of her life and jacob was indeed her sunshine in those times, the fact that she could laugh again after so long speaks enough about how much his company helped her. I do believe that in “new moon” her feelings are not so much of a romantic love, she loves him as a friend but she feels she must correspond to him as a way to thank him for everything he has done for her and also as a way to keep him by her side, because that is what she wants, for someone to be by her side and not leave, plus she will stop being alone and stop thinking so much about edward (although we cannot deny how selfish bella is, something that she herself admits she is, for wanting to have jacob by her side even after edward came back) but to me it makes a lot of sense the possibility of developing feelings for someone who is at your most vulnerable moment and then feeling confused when the person who told you he doesn't love you anymore comes back into your life.
so I can’t really blame her.

Venting about the new casting decision for Snape
As some of y’all may know, I have several accounts dedicated entirely to Severus Snape. I’ve never connected so deeply with a fictional character before. There’s something about him that fascinates me endlessly—I love discovering new details about his personality, coming up with headcanons, drawing him, and just… living in his world. I relate to him on a really profound level. Honestly, I’m very much autistically obsessed with him.
But lately, I haven’t been able to find the same comfort in him as I used to. And it’s because of the new casting decision.
From the beginning, I hated the idea of this remake. I hate remakes in general, I hate J.K. Rowling, and I think this whole reboot is a massive waste of money and creativity. Still, the one thing that kept me mildly curious—maybe even a little excited—was the thought of seeing my favorite character brought to life in a fresh and possibly deeper way.
Then came the rumors. When I first heard people talking about a Black actor being cast as Severus, I scoffed. I told those around me it was probably just fake news meant to stir up engagement online. I even joked that if anything, he’d probably be Kingsley Shacklebolt, not Snape.
But then it was confirmed.
And I’m honestly embarrassed to admit how much it affected me. I haven’t been able to engage with anything Harry Potter-related since. I feel angry—not because of the actor’s race, but because of the blindness and laziness in these creative decisions. When are we going to understand that race is not just about skin color? It carries history, culture, trauma, and lived experience. As a brown woman, I know firsthand what racism feels like. I’ve been bullied—by friends and even family—for the color of my skin.
Changing Snape’s race changes his character entirely. The Harry Potter universe is already deeply flawed: it’s racist, misogynistic, and lacks meaningful representation. This isn’t new. But I truly thought we had moved forward.
I feel disturbed, and honestly kind of ashamed. I’ve had to remind myself over and over again that it’s just fiction.
Why Snape, though? His appearance is one of the most iconic in the whole series—his greasy black hair, his hooked nose, his pale skin. These aren’t just superficial traits; they symbolize who he is: a man shaped by poverty, trauma, neglect, and bullying at the hands of wealthy white purebloods.
Why not choose a character whose story wouldn’t be fundamentally altered by such a change? Why not build a new character, with new stories and experiences, instead of erasing the core of an existing one?
Fuck these series and fuck jk Rowling. What a fucking joke

The one thing I cannot stand when it comes to the Snape, marauders and what JK Rowling intended with the characters discussion is when people say that Snape was influenced by others to look down on muggles as that is simply not true, which we know because of his treatment of Petunia

It’s so interesting how everybody - from Narcissa to Snape to Dumbledore to even Voldemort himself - is convinced that Draco CAN’T kill Dumbledore. Yet they’re all wrong; Draco disarms and corners Dumbledore successfully, and if he were a true Death Eater at heart, that would’ve been Dumbledore’s demise. But the truth is that Draco WON’T kill him. He stalls for as long as possible, and then ultimately starts to lower his wand - even though he knows that literally everything dear to him is at stake if he doesn’t do this. Even Draco’s own mother never suspects that he’ll have any personal qualms about killing; her fear is rooted in his lack of skill/experience and her knowledge of Dumbledore’s power. However, in the end, Draco fails to complete his mission because of a strength, not a weakness.

Child, when do you think is the time to love somebody the most? When they done good and made things easy for everybody? Well then, you ain't through learning--because that ain't the time at all. It's when he's at his lowest and can't believe in hisself 'cause the world done whipped him so! When you starts measuring somebody, measure him right, child, measure him right. Make sure you done take into account what hills and valleys he come through before he got to wherever he is.

A painful past, a history we will never forget. This haiku from the 'Soulful Heritage' section of Soul Sessions reflects the resilience and struggles of our ancestors and family members—those who toiled in the fields, with their hands raw. We honor their strength, their endurance, and their legacy. May we never forget where we come from as we continue to move forward. ✊🏾

"For a moment," he says, "I wondered if it wasn't you shooting bolts at me." I make a face at him. "What makes you think that it wasn't?" He grins up at me. "They missed."
