i've said it before but it will forever and always make me insane that jacob's ending is to join the cullens for the sake of bella not having to give anything up. they find out jake will be immortal & tied to renesmee forever, so bella gets to smile & say "my family is finally complete! ^-^" but jake already HAS a family. he has a father and 2 sisters. quil, embry, seth and sam are like his brothers. jacob and leah were planning to run away together. he's always been welcome in emily's home, sue has been a family friend since before his birth. bella abandons her mortality by choice because she feels no connection to the people around her, but jacob has really strong bonds. it's clear that every character we meet in la push is like family to him, he's an active member of the community. jake would've graduated high school and been a mechanic, would've grown into a young man. a good friend, a fun uncle, a present son. he's set up to have such a rich life. and he's just magically compelled to give that up. beyond his control, he loses sight of everything, because his high school crush's baby is now the singular most important thing to him. he's perpetually 18 with his perpetually 18 year old girlfriend, running around vancouver or alaska or wherever with the girl who friendzoned him at 16 & her in-laws (who were antagonistic to him for months). and i'm just supposed to say omg yay now he doesn't have to let go of bella! everyone is happy! it's complete madness

*Shadow watches as Sonic backs away from him. He hadn't noticed it before, but Sonic had been wearing his bracelet under his sleeve. He takes it off and tosses it to Shadow, who catches it* ......What are you doing..?

... I don't know if that works as a charm or anything, so.. I tend to wear it on new moons in case.

*Sonic can feel his fur stand on end. It's starting* Just... Don't freak out.

Sonic..?

*He opens his mouth to continue to stall, but he's cut off by a splitting pain running through his entire body. He hugs his head as he begins to grow, his bones screaming as they change shape to accommodate his transformation. He screams, his voice shifting into a deep roar as his teeth extend into razor-sharp fangs. His gloves are torn to pieces as his hands expand and grow sharp claws*

*Sonic is now something entirely different... Something that stands at twice Shadow's height, thick dull blue fur covering his new body. Above the maw full of canine teeth, his eyes remain that bright green from before. He stands slightly hunched, his huge arms moving to awkwardly hug himself. Sonic looks down at Shadow with his new duotone vision. He hates the look on Shadow's face. He looks afraid*

..... You hate me now...

.......... *Shadow rushes forward and hugs him around the middle. He can't reach any higher. Sonic feels the fur on his back fluff up and he looks down at him*

What are you doing..?

.... This is what you were hiding.. isn't it....

I....... yeah.

Sonic... *Shadow looks up at him, offering him a smile* You're beautiful...

*Sonic's eyes water. There's no way. He carefully picks up Shadow, holding him close to his face so they can talk* .... Are you sure...? I'm... I'm a-

If you call yourself a monster, you're being a hypocrite. You're incredible.. I'm proud of you for showing me.. *He kisses Sonic's nose* I love you..

*Sonic makes a doglike whimper and headbutts Shadow, making him laugh and hold onto his face so he doesn't fall* I.. I love you too..

Heheh.. Good.. *He takes in Sonic's new facial features* ... Your bone structure is so different... Did.. It hurt as much as it looked like it did..?

Maybe even more, yeah.. But... I feel okay now..

Yeah... *He sets Shadow down and stretches a little* Hm... You know... We could go for a run like this. I haven't used this form in a long time.

Sounds like fun~ For now, though.. We're still on a date, aren't we? *He sits on the quilt and pats the spot next to him. Sonic lays down next to him, his hands resting on his belly as he stares up at the stars. Shadow scoots over and carefully lays his head on Sonic's chest. Sonic looks down at him, then moves his arm to hug him close. Shadow closes his eyes as Sonic's big arms wrap around him, melting into the warm fur. It's much softer than it looks*

Do any of the Cullens actually care about Bella? Short answer: no. But it’s a little more complicated than that, and it varies by each of them. They don’t care about her in the way we’re led to believe, or even the way Bella believes they do. Instead, they care about her only insofar as she serves their interests. From the moment Bella enters their orbit, she’s a demonstration of how little the Cullens actually value human life.

The text makes this clear, and Midnight Sun outright spells it out: the Cullens are inherently selfish. Human life is disposable to them. The difference between them and other vampires is that they cosplay as humans, pretending to care while masking their predatory nature. We’re supposed to think they’re “better” than regular vampires, but they’re not. And honestly? That’s what makes them creepy. None of them cared about Bella as a person. Most of them were fine with her being killed if it came to that.

Edward sums this up perfectly in Midnight Sun when he considers what everyone would think if he drained Bella. Rosalie and Jasper wouldn’t care—if anything, they’d feel smug for being right about Edward’s inability to resist. Esme’s concern would be for Edward’s well-being, not Bella’s life. Carlisle would be disappointed but ultimately forgiving. Emmett? He’d shrug it off. Alice might be upset about losing a potential friend, but even that’s questionable. None of them cared enough to oppose the idea strongly; they were just going along with what suited them.

Rosalie, in particular, gets villainized for not liking Bella, but she’s not any worse than the others. The difference is that Rosalie doesn’t lie about her indifference. She doesn’t play mind games or pretend to care. She wasn’t plotting against Bella she just didn’t want Edward’s fixation to endanger the family. Jasper and Emmett, on the other hand, were fine with Edward killing Bella. Rosalie only got involved when Edward started implicating them in his reckless behavior. Even then, she relented when Carlisle insisted they play nice.

Esme, meanwhile, cared more about Edward’s happiness than Bella’s life. If killing Bella made Edward happy, Esme would’ve supported it. If dating her and dooming her to vampirism made Edward happy, Esme welcomed her. Alice? Alice was less concerned about Bella as a person and more about the idea of her as a new “friend” and human Barbie doll. She orchestrated the relationship, fully aware of the danger Bella faced, because she wanted Bella close. She doesn’t care about Bella’s safety; she cares about her own desires.

Jasper? He doesn’t care about Bella as a person. To him, she’s a tantalizing temptation a challenge to overcome and a new ear to hear his Civil War stories. Emmett? He’s just along for the ride. He didn’t think twice about Bella until the family decided to include her. Then she became “Edward’s human,” and that was that. Carlisle? He cared about Bella in the abstract as an innocent girl who didn’t “deserve” to die but his actions show his selfishness. He made vampires without their consent, knowing they’d kill humans, and let Edward pursue Bella, fully aware of the danger. Carlisle’s priority has always been maintaining his moral high ground while indulging his family’s selfish desires.

Ultimately, none of the Cullens cared about Bella beyond what she represented to them: Edward’s pet project, Alice’s new toy, or Carlisle’s opportunity to preach about self-control. They proved this when they abandoned her without a second thought, leaving her unprotected from the supernatural chaos they brought into her life just because Edward said so.

They’re selfish, manipulative predators who pretend to be human for their own twisted reasons. They don’t care about humans, and Bella was no exception. The outrage over Rosalie’s indifference feels hypocritical when none of the Cullens actually cared about Bella either. At least Rosalie was honest about it. She didn’t have a vendetta against Bella she was just upfront about her priorities. Compared to the others, Rosalie’s selfishness is almost refreshing.

Which brings us to the next natural question: does Edward care about Bella? Spoiler: no. He thinks he does, and we’re supposed to believe he does, but that’s a whole other can of worms. In conclusion, no, the Cullens don’t care about Bella not as a person. She was never more than a convenient object of their desires, and that’s the unsettling truth at the heart of their “family dynamic.”

what makes me actually boil with rage is the way it’s framed as though jacob & the cullens have an even rivalry and like, he hates them just as much as they hate him, but like… jacob is a lower class kid who lives on the rez, the cullens live in a plantation home on private property. jacob calling alice a leech is an insult, but alice calling him a mongrel calls into power and privilege, ya know. like am i supposed to honestly think jake making blonde jokes to rosalie (which is certainly sexist and uncalled for) is on the same level as her serving him food in a dog dish? him seeing the cullens as bloodsuckers and murderers is just like, incorrect and unfair, but them seeing him as uncivilized and over-aggressive has implications deeply rooted in the oppression of his people

I used to think Bella was so dramatic in new moon but now that I'm older I get it .... because my girl finally felt like she belonged somewhere, she had a hot boyfriend taking care of her and making her feel like a teenager when she has spent her whole life parenting her own parents, having amazing in-laws, a best friend......

and then EVERYONE LEAVES AS IF THEY NEVER EXISTED!!!! All of Bella's insecurities and fears came true, so she was valid for everything she did and I think she should have broken every window in the Cullen house.

*Once the two of them have finished stargazing and eating their picnic snacks, Sonic gets up and stretches* You ready to head back? Today kinda took it outta me.

Mm. It's been a big day. Or.. night. *He packs the basket back up* Are you fit to run?

Yeah. I think I should probably run a bit while I'm like this. It'll be good to stretch my legs.

Sounds good. Race back home?

Yep. Wait- *He leans down and presses his lips against Shadow's cheek. Shadow smiles and kisses him, even though Sonic can't kiss back properly*

Come on, handsome. Bedtime. *He gets ready to take off, holding the basket tightly* Ready?

*Sonic admires him for a moment, then gets stanced on all fours* Ready. Three-two-one-go!! *He starts running, going faster than Shadow expected with this new form, but still much slower than usual. He shakes his head and follows, racing at Sonic's speed. The werehog glances sideways at him* Hey! You're taking it easy on me!

It's a date, faker. I'm not gonna leave you in the dust.

*Sonic rolls his eyes and bumps Shadow with his shoulder as they run. Shadow shoves back, enjoying their typical playfighting. It takes them a good while longer than usual to get home, but when they do, Sonic seems even more exhausted than before* Jeez.. I forgot how much energy this form takes.. *He looks at the sky. He can't see the moon, but it should be getting low now*

How are we going to get up there.. *Shadow is looking at their bedroom window. They live on the second story, and the floors are a bit taller than standard* ... and how are you gonna fit...

Oh.. I hadn't thought that far.. *He winces, putting a clawed hand against his head* Agh-

Sonic? *Shadow looks up at him, worried*

Ugh.. I think I'm starting to turn back.. Headache. I'm fine.

...Alright.. Let's try going through the house. I don't think you'll fit through the window.

Sounds good.. *Sonic follows Shadow inside, squeezing through the door and leaving some fur behind on the frame. They sneak through the foyer, through the main living room, past the three guests crashed out on the couches, and up the stairs toward their bedroom. It's so dark neither of them can see much, but they make it to their room without being caught*

*Sonic flops onto the bed, sighing. He's definitely a bit smaller now, but not by much. Shadow smiles and kicks off his air shoes, leaving the basket by the door and crawling into the bed with his boyfriend. He snuggles into the soft fluffy werehog fur and feels his entire body relax. Smells like Sonic. Sonic hugs him close as they both fall asleep*
