and steve ofc picks up obscure dnd monster names, starts calling eddie shit like bridge troll and nasty orc man. upgrades over the years to nilbog and rot grub and gelatinous cube and flumph. eddie gets hit with froghemoth the day he forgot to pull the chicken out of the freezer and is both annoyed and turned on.

it's so hard to take criticisms of veilguard at face value in regard to 'straying from the concept art'. like. i work in the marketing department for a state university. i report to our director of marketing and team up with our artists and project manager everyday. our brainstorming sessions are ridiculous. they're incredibly chaotic. i throw out ideas left and right and most of them are stupid. our project manager gets overexcited and chimes in. then our social media manager responds at the actual speed of light. our artist fights the bodily urge to flee from the fucking room. none of it makes sense. we have another brainstorming session, and another after that. we start to organize the ideas three weeks later. our director daydreams about chugging vodka during every meeting. eventually our ideas make it onto our project management software and things start to come together. at some point in the *spongebob voice* distant future, we begin to formulate the actual product. i work in marketing and i literally do not know how we manage to push out consistent, high-quality products, but we do. but for those who are still confused about why ideas from the concept art were abandoned, it's because 80% of them are not actually appropriate for what the product will turn out to be. art is messy. and glorious. and it takes a team to push out something amazing, and i think that's what we got with veilguard

Can Carmy find his own peace?

I didn't know how to answer this question, but I recently finished my favorite book about healing from trauma. And the author may have an answer to that. This is an extract of the foreword.

This is my interpretation of the motives of the show:

Syd loves the person Carmy truly is, and Claire loves the person Carmy wants to pretend to be/limits himself to be (Logan, the Bear, the shy kid she met in school, Mickey's little brother, the broken but successful chef). Claire doesn't have any interest in making him evolve from that. In other words, Claire loves Carmy's protective self.

So, for Carmy to find true peace, he needs to let go of that protective self and accept all of himself, let go of the bear, and let the man go forward.

Do you know what is the biggest indicator of Sydney loving Carmy's true self, despite how little time they have spent together?

THE DISH

She could have loved the dish Carmy was coerced to do by that chef that humiliated/abused him like Donna did (a reflection of who he became due to the abuse he endured) but no, SHE LOVED THE MOST PURE DISTILLATION OF CARMYS FEELINGS, HIS HEART IN A PLATE, HIS TRUE IDENTITY AND EXPRESSION

you cannot get more intentional than that.

Sydney's peace comes from trust, which can only come after acceptance and intention, while Claire's "peace" comes from numbness.

Thinking about love in season 2 of The Bear and how Carmy seems to conceptualize "love" and "fun" as opposites — because for him, they historically have been. It's something I really noticed in Fishes (2x06): how vocally and genuinely everyone in his family — including in-laws and functionally adoptive members like Richie and the Fak siblings — loves each other, but also how deeply entwined that love is with stress and chaos and criticism.

Natalie is nicknamed, by people who love her, after a mistake she made years ago and which is still held over her head when she tries to help in the kitchen. Donna loves her children and is loved by them in turn, but she's constantly on the edge of a meltdown, unable to offer or accept support. She spends hours cooking them a beautiful dinner, and then she drives a car through the wall. Michael reminds Carmy he loves him and tries to give him advice, and then he gets in a massive fight with Uncle Lee at the dinner table and starts throwing forks. Cooking is clearly so important to his family, but doing this activity they love, and especially doing it around the people they love, so rarely results in a feeling of "amusement or enjoyment."

And so it's no surprise, really, that the career Carmy loves is one that gives him panic attacks and made him throw up before work every day, or that he (and Natalie and Sydney) not only decide on such a radical transformation of the restaurant but give themselves a ridiculously sort timeline to complete it. He's stressed and miserable a lot of the time, but is it really something he loves if he doesn't feel that way?
