Oh man you guys! I really enjoyed this episode! I loved it way more than The Broken Circle but I did not love it as much as I loved Ad Astra Per Aspera but that episode was so a cut above the average (as in in the running for best episodes of Trek ever written caliber stuff). That it hardly seems fair to say so because this episode was an absolute JOY to watch! Lol! I love a good time travel romp!

I remembered enjoying Paul Wesley’s Kirk in A Quality of Mercy but I wasn’t sure whether I was just riding the high of the previous season or whether he could pull it off twice. But he did and I really really like his interpretation of Jim. I honestly like it a lot better than Chris Pine’s if I’m super honest with y’all.

I mean he UNDERSTOOD the assignment! He was definitely at his Kirkiest when they initially arrived in the 21st century that body language and cadence was on point despite him not looking too much like Shatner. I mean hats off to the writers too for that one. The passion for chess without being overly cocky. The all of it!

There was something about the hot dogs scene and letting La’an have the bed in the hotel that felt very Tarsus IV even tho that might not have happened in this timeline. It’s still very James Kirk of him. Not to mention the whole bit where his type is overachiever, kinda uptight but also dark and mysterious and dare I say a little out of his league folks. Whom he charms without being pushy into warming up to him and letting their guard down. Also THANK YOU to the writers and to Wesley for recognizing Kirk Drift and acknowledging our boy is a hopeless romantic and NOT a babe hound.

I called the La’an/Kirk thing way before it happened because of it. And from what was implied in the Ready Room interview with Paul Wesley it sounds as though we might get more La’an & Jim content in the future which I certainly wouldn’t object to! Although we are skirting the edge of when Jim & Carol Marcus supposedly met so that might get a lil complicated but the seasons (because they’re sorter) might not be 1:1 with years so they’ve got some wiggle room to work with.

I love seeing the cinematic parallels between Kirk & Jim’s love interest stuff in SNW that clearly draws them to each other later on. Chapel is a lot like Kirk and Spock is falling for her pretty hard. La’an is a lot like Spock by the time we meet him in TOS (not too similar to SNW baby Spock though) and they fell for each other pretty badly too! For example, both La’an & Spock are terrified of Kirk’s insane driving skills (or lack thereof lmao)! But enough about Jim & the whole K/S kitten caboodle! This episode is about LA’AN :D

Holy shit did La’an need what’s been happening with her in these past couple episodes. She got to face her generational trauma headlong, she got to see a mirror in Kirk and further realize the value of enjoying the fleeting and precious joys of life. By both convincing this alternate timeline version of Kirk that her version of the world is worth saving (also not the “Sam’s alive?” 😭 because his older brother dies unexpectedly and tragically in both timelines DONT TOUCH MEEEE, also not the potential Kirk bros content going forward also 😭). To eating the damn hot dog, and presumably letting Kirk talk her into taking the bed and just ugggggh.

And then HE DIES! They fridged Captain James T. Kirk of all people for HER character development lmao how’s THAT for a twist. Historically it’s been the other way around how’s that feel for once Jimbo? Damn!

Sera was an interesting villain, she was a good twist honestly felt like something was up with her the minute she had pics of that romukan ship. Also, I love all the self referential like, “yes we acknowledge this changed a little bit” stuff that’s happened. Like the Temporal Wars are why the Eugenics war is supposed to start around *now* and not the 90s like previously stated and Sera has been trapped trying to fulfill her mission for 30 years. Or how clearly Jim thinks everybody calls his brother George and only he gets to call him Sam when clearly that’s not the case lol. It’s nice little touches like that that really make me feel validated for having faith in the writers when nitpickers complain.

Also PELIA! She’s an art thief?! Incredible! Hilarious! Brilliant! No notes! Although it JUST occurred to me that because La’an went to Pelia before the whole “preventing the timeline from changing entirely” bit does THAT mean that La’an can at least talk to Pelia about what happened?! Because it’s implied La’an is who inspired her to become an engineer and that’s still part of our prime timeline! Maybe it’s like a Guinan and Picard situation! I think La’an should get to sob into the arms of our funky little klepto engineer grandma as a treat instead of breaking down alone in her room, please and thank you!

I Ship It (obviously)

1. What made you ship it?

You know, it's really funny. I watched TOS as a small child, again as a teenager, and again in my thirties -- but it wasn't until I saw the stills and the out-of-context quotes that it started to click for me that these Super Divorced Men were in a poly triad. And I thought, "Oh, it just looks gay when out of context." But then I looked at the context. And it was all over for me.

It's the way Jim looks at Bones and Spock, like the universe vanishes for him when they are close. It's the way Spock (who is from a culture where affection is a source of shame) cannot keep his hands off his Captain or Doctor for five minutes (oh hi I'm a touch telepath you seem to have some exposed skin *POKE*). It's McCoy pushing Kirk and Spock away and then rushing back to them with everything that he is, only to push them away again.

It's Leonard Nimoy's face scant inches from De Kelly's or Bill Shatner's, and the screen melting from the heat and sexual tension. It's DeKelly looking at Shatner and licking his lips.

It's Kirk's eyes on their lips and their asses in any instance where Kirk doesn't have lines, and Kirk and Spock biting their lips when they look at one another.

Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

Honestly, in TOS, my favorite thing is the speeches that McCoy and Spock give that are basically just thinly disguised declarations of love.

Spock: "Computers make excellent and efficient servants; but I have no wish to serve under them. Captain, a starship also runs on loyalty to one man, and nothing can replace it, or him."

McCoy: "In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million earth-type planets...and in all the universe, three million million galaxies like this one. And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us. Don't destroy the one named Kirk."

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

LOL I think shipping a triad is unpopular enough!

But actually, I think it's my take on Spock. Yes, Spock is a badass. Yes, Spock has super strength. Yes, Spock says he doesn't have emotions.

But Spock lies. Spock steals starships. Spock goes into a group of hippie teenagers and is accepted as one of their own inside thirty seconds. Spock has a sense of humor and will sass you into the ground. So much of the character is hidden, and he's terrified to let it loose, partly because he is afraid of hurting others, but more than that, because he fears ridicule.

I see the sweet, innocent, goofy SNW Spock inside of TOS Spock. The snark and the sass are walls. When those walls come down, once the pain has been soothed, you get the sweet and the goofy back.

Hello, I was the Kirk bros anon haha. Two things I would love to have discourse about: one, I feel like Sam isn’t going to make it off the Gorn ship 😭 and if we get a Jim reaction scene I think it’ll actually kill me, and two, do you think that Jim and Sam had nicknames for each other as kids (am I writing a fic? What? No…) like J or JT or Jimmy and Sammy or even Georgie. I have a lot of feelings about this. 😪

Well, howdy, Friend! Oh boy do I have a lot to say on all of that!! Before I get into it all, I want to apologize for taking so long to respond to this. Work has been long lately lol.

So. Let's start with the Gorn Ship part. Sam making it off the Gorn ship is something I deem highly probable, personally based on one key point: SNW is marketed as a direct prequel to TOS. (This isn't saying that I personally see it as being set in the same timeline, but that's a different discussion.)

Canonically, Sam Kirk doesn't die until Stardate 3287.2, and according to Memory Alpha, Hegemony takes place in Stardate 2344.2 which is a few years prior. (Although Stardates aren't always the most consistent. So take that with a grain of salt.) I do hope think we'll get to see more of Jim as they get Sam (and everyone else, I guess) away from the Gorn. But I don't think Sam will die, because of "Operation--Annihilate!" being such an iconic episode, so he's got a little bit of plot armor there.

But Jim's reaction to his brother being taken by the Gorn? Oh My Lanta, I might cry at the thought. That sounds heartwrenching regardless of Sam's survival. I am always up for conversation about this sort of thing, so feel free to disagree with me!!💙

But onto your second question. Childhood nicknames. Those can be tricky, especially coming from siblings. I do think that Jimmy and Georgie were used frequently by their parents, but between the two of them, it's a little more nuanced.

One of my favorite SNW headcanons that you can pry from my cold dead hands, is that Sam didn't really start going by "Sam" until he left home. Jim was the only one who called him that when they were growing up. So in a way, Sam is his childhood nickname. For Jim, I think it was a combination of things. Jim, Jimmy, Jay, JT was a good one too. But really, I think that he probably had some stupid 'brother nickname' like "Mocking Jay" or "Sonny" or something. One of those nicknames that requires like a full ten layers of context that just leaves everyone a little bit confused. I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on that, though!!

I can't guarantee anything. But I might write a Kirk Bros fic because of you. Any ideas on what kind of thing would be the most fun and/or heartbreaking with that? (Again, no guarantees. I'm kinda flighty sometimes.) You've made me think more about them than normal, so if you need to yell about them, I may yell with you. (Sorry if this is too random, or annoying, or anything.😅)

NO NOT RANDOM I LOVE PPL YELLING even if it’s something I don’t know about. I just love when people are passionate about stuff.

I have like 30 WIPS sitting in my google drive so I totally understand you. I also started a Kirk Bros fic. It’s just a lengthy outline right now that starts right at the end of 2x10 and would end after the four Enterprise crew members are back on the ship and recovering (because everyone is going to be messed up as hell, especially La’an and I’m sure that someone will be dead in the show).

But these are some things I’ve thought about including in my WIP! Please feel free to run with them. Seriously, take them from me!

Disclaimer, in my fic I’m retconning Sam’s wife and kids from TOS because I haven’t found the SNW mention of her, which is apparently there somewhere, but I didn’t want to have to include the daddy dynamic of Sam’s character into it lol.

So first off, Pike doesn’t end up deciding if they’re pulling out, Una does. They only pull out far enough to not be in immediate danger, which is still against Starfleet orders, so they’d be breaking some regulation already and be in a wacky sort of limbo.

Then, how difficult it would be for Pike to tell Jim. I feel like he’d save him for last after contacting everyone else’s families… which I now realize those four have very little of. Jim would just know that something is wrong off the bat just from Pike’s face. He might even jump to the conclusion that Sam is dead and then the reality of his situation when Pike tells him ends up being so much worse. From there, Jim is dead set on joining them for a rescue mission, even if he has to break some regulations himself. Also at this point Christopher is a freaking mess ofc.

My biggest issue with writing the Gorn right now though is figuring out how to not have them immediately kill or do the dermal impregnation thing that’s going on with Batel, to the four of them and the settlers from the planet. I’m toying with the idea that the Gorn have been possessed by another entity. There’s an episode of Enterprise where some crew members contract a “silicone based virus” that was a whole separate species and I was thinking about trying to emulating that somehow.

I have a lot in my brain that happens between the exposition and the rescue but of course my whumpy ass had Sam being in the worst shape out of the group when they get back to the Enterprise. I think if I did go the infected Gorn route then the “virus species” will have been experimenting on Sam and he might be totally catatonic by that point and from there it would be blah, blah, blah recovery blah, blah. <- my brain literally cannot form a better sentence to communicate this rn

The actual first scene I wrote for the fic was Sam telling Jim about how picturing their childhood got him through everything that happened and specifically telling him the story about the first time he held him as a baby. Idk what kind of crack I was on that night but he ends it by telling him that he knew it was his job to take care of him as soon as he set his eyes on him. Did I write that because I’m the oldest sibling? What? No.

So anyways… yeah I have a lot of thoughts on this. And if you’d like to write something together I’m down for that too!

- why does Spock refer to himself as Number One? Wouldn’t that hurt both him and Pike?

- “that’s La’an’s ship” is such an interesting way to put it when Kirk is the captain LOL (yes, I know they didn’t want to reveal the captain)

- no, I still hate how Sam talks about Jim because what’s said is what people will remember and the way he described Jim is just not true and very pop-culture-y. “He bends rules all the time” no he doesn’t, and it’s especially wild when it’s used in a reimagining of Balance of Terror. So my initial “I guess Sam doesn’t know his brother” still tracks, because he also only knows what Kirk wants him to see. He doesn’t know about his struggles, his doubts, how seriously he takes all of his decisions... “Bones, what if I’m wrong?”*

- I really dislike they made Ortegas take Stiles’ role. Unless they show something in s2 that would explain her behaviour, it’s just so ??? (maybe they tried to hint at it with her “blue meanie” thing with Hemmer during the funeral?) Or like if they just showed some animosity between Ortegas and Spock in previous episodes...

- they should have used Sarek’s actor for the commander. They should have gone all out.

* I know they used Sam’s words to put some doubts in Pike’s mind about Kirk, but it’s like - this brash, young captain. Is he the reason a war starts? - when Kirk is so far from being brash in his dealing with Pike. In some way, he’s way more collected than Pike, coming up with better options. (I really did not appreciate this episode the right way the first, and even the second time, because of Sam’s words. 

- attack pattern Tiberius four is sooo stupid. 

- “All this because of a second’s delay?” Well, of course. Kirk’s reminded of his failure, of his hesitation, on the Farragut every single day. And now, because someone else hesitated he lost the ship, and probably a lot of his crew as well. Love the acknowledgement. 

- “I’m an engineer, not a miracle worker.” .............. not a fan. I also really dislike that the episode after Hemmer’s death has Scotty’s voice. You don’t have to try so hard to milk the nostalgia, especially since it’s McCoy’s line... I guess there’s not much hope for s2 to be less about nostalgia when Kirk’s around, is there? I mean, I like when the lines from the show are used, but I also need them to be used by the characters or is some kind of a reverse - it would be fine if Scotty said this line to McCoy, for example. It would be fine if McCoy existed and it was an inside joke between Scott and Spock because they both know McCoy. Like this, it’s just cheap as is Scotty’s presence. It was AU, he didn’t need to be there. 

- I kinda love that Pike and Kirk just met and they just immediately started to call each other “Jim” and “Chris” lol

- it’s funny how easily Spock is like “you’re important to me too”. He’s always so soft and open with Pike.

- I really do like this Kirk. I know I’m gonna see different Kirks in s2, but I like this one. (I don’t like how Sam introduced him though lol)

- but I really wonder what will Pike do differently to save Una and why didn’t it work out in the other future. If it literally happened a few moments after he sent the letters... will his journey to the future change something in his actions? I also wonder what will make the Farragut and the Enterprise cross paths before 2266. It’s not like they didn’t (because of La’an... but also did La’an never return to the Enterprise? Or did she go to Farragut after she was promoted to a Commander), but Kirk didn’t meet Spock in that timeline... 

like I just hope that some bits from the future will be reflected......... because it’s so weird putting La’an on Kirk’s ship and then not doing anything with it ever again

Let's overanalyze!

Another thought about the upcoming ST: SNW:

And the reason why I cringe at this thought, even though I firmly believe that a reader/viewer is a co-creator (and if the viewer sees Spirk everywhere, it's because in their interpretation it exists, and it's no less valid than any other interpretation, the death of the author etc.), is the portrayal of Kirk/Spirk relationship in the Kelvin timeline.

What's the problem with the Kelvin timeline? Let's break it out. But first a disclaimer of sorts: I regard at least everything on-screen to be canon. I absolutely loved how they confirmed the Kelvin timeline in Discovery, it's great. The fact that I didn't like certain creative choices doesn't make a ST installment not canon, I think. The only exception being the finale of the Enterprise, "These are the voyages", I must admit though.

As a queer person intently looking for gays in ST, I will always find them, of course, but there is a difference between shipping where there's romantic chemistry, and where there is none. The latter can be fun too, it may be a more creative process even, because you need to fill the gaps left by canon and so on. As for myself, I am a sucker for chemistry on screen: give me Spirk, give me Qcard, give me T'pol/Tucker as well, but, for example, Picard/Riker would really be weird. (Sorry, didn't mean this to offend, if this is your ship). Because there is a difference between bro's being dudes and romantic chemistry.

And this is exactly what happened in AOS. I can believe (speaking in-universe) that Kirk and Spock managed to forge a friendship, but, even though I wanted to see it, there was no romantic chemistry between them for me.

And it is fine. Stamets was bisexual in the Mirror universe, there is nothing in-universe preventing Spock and Kirk from being bro's instead of lovers in the Kelvin timeline, definitely taking into account all the respective trauma and some butterfly effect. (I accept AOS Kirk as a crazy hothead womanizer because he grew up without a father, I accept AOS Spock being way more emotional and way less ashamed because it's a different timeline, and being less ashamed he could have a relationship with Uhura, while his Prime counterpart wasn't capable of a hug in the same situation, as we know from This Side of Paradise). With all this being sad, I must admit that no matter how much I love Spirk, I wouldn't want to see it canonized if Star Trek 4 ever comes out (which I doubt, but for the sake of the argument).

But the situation with the upcoming ST: SNW is completely different. SNW deals with the Prime timeline, and the creators, it seems, have already made their point about the necessity of the in-universe backstory. Judging by an episode from Short Treks, Q&A, where we see Spock smiling (like in the original pilot, The Cage), I guess it is safe to assume that it was Number One's influence that made him a reserved Vulcan who fakes being emotionless, the Spock we know and love from TOS. And I am thrilled for that! In-universe explanations of the creative choices influenced by reality excite me very much.

This is exactly why I will legit weep if the depiction of Spock and Kirk in SNW makes canonic Spirk impossible. (There are so many ways to ruin it, so I don't even want to start theorising). So let's just hope for the best and try to keep it gay. (To prove my point I need a gif of Shatner singing "keep it gay", but I can't find it atm, so here's the second best).

Summary: A new patient brought in by the paramedics is to shatter both MC and Dr Ethan Ramsey. For different reasons.

Dr Ethan Ramsey watched her pace across the hall near the patient’s room. Now and then, she would stop and crane her neck to glance inside. She took a shift off because of just who arrived at the hospital with the paramedics but two hours ago.

And now Rookie, his Rookie could think of nothing else but that man.

Well, apparently, she wasn’t so his after all.

They never talked about her family before, Ethan admitted that. Begrudgingly, gritting his teeth and scowling as he kept on watching her from the corner. Hidden from her sight, yet a few residents have already wondered at him loitering. He didn’t care, and no one was bold enough to ask when greeted by his icy glare.

Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose and took a step back. He needed to leave, let her be, he told himself.

Also, he hated himself for assuming… things? Admitting his feelings, letting Naveen talk him into noticing those at all. Then listening to his mentor once again, that perhaps there was something between Ethan and Rookie, and allowing himself hope…

Ethan just assumed it was okay for him to hug her when nobody was looking. It gave him peace and comfort, and also she radiated that warmth he couldn’t get enough of. They cared for Naveen together, in fact, the older man took a liking to Rookie so much he even let her convince himself to be admitted as a regular patient. As his assigned doctors, Naveen insisted on that in front of Harper, Ethan and Lin grew even closer. Ethan never questioned his chances.

Before.

Then the paramedics brought in a Mr Lee, a young man of twenty-nine. And Rookie lost it.

Ethan noticed some commotion down the corridor, then saw his Rookie slowly lower herself to the floor with Dr Trinh hovering over. He dashed to them before he could even think.

His eyes widened. There was a pang through his heart and a bitter taste at the back of his throat. Ethan saw the patient’s name, then glanced back at Lin – the same surname, and by her lost look he was, in fact, who Ethan thought the man was. Damn, he was the one to approve her residency application, how could the fact she was married even escape him?! Or was it a new development? After all, they did never talk about her family before.

A few seconds, and Ethan forced himself to snap out of it. Two doctors panicking (Dr Trinh included) were already enough for the day. He snatched the files and strode to the operating theatre where the man was being taken.

“He’ll be fine,” Ethan snapped and jerked his head away so as not to see her face. “I promise,” he added a little softer.

Nobody questioned when he took over the operation. It wasn’t all that serious. Several stitches and fixes, and the man was as good as new.

Ethan lingered by the doors and looked through the patient’s records. James Wei Lee. 29, married. Car accident. The damage done he stitched himself.

Ethan scowled and accidentally scared off some nurse. He kept telling himself he had to do it for her. Because Rookie cared so deeply for the man, she would be shattered if anything went wrong. It was a long time since Ethan focused on making every move absolutely perfect. Not great as with other patients but truly flawless.

Her panicked gaze was the first thing Ethan bumped into when leaving the operating theatre.  

“He is alright. All in order,” he told her. And stepped back.

Ethan cut himself off. He almost touched her. Stopped his own hands when his fingers were inches above her shoulders. Lin was shivering, even shaking slightly, he wanted nothing else but to hug her, pull her closer to him, press her into his body and tell her that everything would be fine. That he got her and would never let go. Burry his face into her hair, mess the already titled hair bun, kiss every dry tear off her cheeks…

“Let him rest for the hour,” he told Lin instead and looked away. The usual Rookie didn’t roll off his tongue. He became too addicted to adding “my” Rookie, even if only inside his head.

Ethan scowled, turned on his heels and was about to stride off. It was not his place to be.

“…!”

He was cut short by a shriek. Chinese, he guessed and looked back. His heart fell: his Rookie was staring at him. Her eyes open wide, the fear he saw in those before was nothing compared to her frozen expression.

“Lin!” Ethan caught only her name. Across the hall, a young woman rushed towards them waving her arms around. Her face was flashed, breath ragged and clothes a total mess, the buttons were mismatched.

And she pounced on his Rookie, grabbed her by the white doctor’s coat and went to ramble on in Chinese.

Lin tried to calm her down, she did. Grasped her wrists, the woman wrenched them free, then tried to interrupt – the woman hushed her and ranted on. She was sobbing loudly, and Ethan doubted anything she was saying made sense.

And then he heard Rookie say,

“Dr Ramsey did the operation. He says James is fine.”

The woman fell silent. Breathed in sharply. Looked at Rookie, then followed to where she was pointing. Directly at him.

“Thank you!” exclaimed the woman and rushed at him.

Ethan stepped out of her way yet she stopped right in front and bowed. Her every move hectic and erratic, she bent too low and started rambling. This time in English, but Ethan could hardly make her words out. She asked after the patient, thanked him, then bowed a few more times, something about where he was and else.

“Dr Ramsey said we can see brother in an hour,” said Rookie calmly.

Ethan flinched. He was used to her addressing him like that in public yet this time it left a cut. She did call him Ethan, just Ethan for the past months they were either alone or with Naveen.

Wait, brother? Did she just say…

“Thank you!” exclaimed the woman once more and hurried to the patient’s room at which Rookie pointed.

And they were left alone. Just him and, apparently, still his-to-be Rookie. Unless he just messed it up by his scowl but a minute ago.

“… Rookie?”

“Thank you for my brother, Dr Ramsey.”

That broke him. He scooped her in his arms, rested his chin at the top of her head and breathed out sharply. His fingers dug into her shoulders, a little too painful he knew it. Couldn’t help it.

“Dr Ramsey…”

She fidgeted, snaked her hand in between them and gently pushed. He didn’t let go, only loosened his grip and leaned to her face. Traced her temple, and then his fingertips found her chin.

“Lin, please,” he whispered. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?” She looked utterly confused now.

“I…” Ethan traced off but forced himself to continue. She needed to know. “I overreacted. Seeing you like that, seeing you care that much for somebody, well, else.”

Ethan pushed her into his body, pressed her head to her chest and wrapped his arms around so that she couldn’t look up. He would say it, yet it didn’t mean he would let her see his face at that moment.

“It’s selfish really. But that very selfish part of me wants you to care like that only for him. Only for me.”

She tensed. Ethan felt her freeze in his arms, and his heart skipped a beat.

“Excuse me, I overthought it,” he snapped and pushed her away.

if you're new here (and maybe started to follow me because of SNW), I tend to rewatch random TOS episodes quite often (it hasn't been happening for a while because I've been distracted, but I guess I always come back...) and I usually end up spamming when I do that, and it's typically Kirk related these days... (well for a year and a half tbh) and I do talk a lot about Kirk as a character, which includes the relationships with women in his life

I ship Kirk/McCoy and Spock/McCoy (I do not ship the one not listed).

It might not look like it, but my favourite character is actually McCoy. Kirk just... happened. And SNW has unfortunately given me more fodder...

I'm very canon oriented when talking about the show, but I'm not really stuck on one random line. (That's a lie, I'm very stuck on "And you haven't come to see us in four years, either." because everyone keeps ignoring it and thinks that Spock hasn't seen his father for 18 years by Journey to Babel... anyway lol)

I also absolutely love Sarek, so if you hate him, and I get into my Sarek moods, your time here might not be pleasant lol

Do you have any predictions for Spock/Chapel and Stonn/T’Pring in SNW season 2?

I got this question as a submission, my rambling follows:

I don’t really have any predictions, I’m just here for the ride. I haven’t read any spoilers or anything, I only watched the two trailers (and I’ve had these thoughts since s1 - I even posted some of them – I just updated them a bit), but I assume that Spock will start losing more and more control, until something finally snaps and he and Chapel cross the line (what that line truly is remains to be seen). But in some way, I also kind of expect them to put an end to it in this season (towards the end), if they want to stay true to TOS. Because Chapel needs to get engaged. I also assume that Spock will regain his control, and therefore chooses T’Pring because he wants to be seen as a Vulcan and having a human mate wouldn’t achieve that. (I also think that Spock might try to suppress his feelings towards Chapel and try to redirect them at T’Pring.) 

I believe that at this point, T’Pring is in love with Spock, and she wants to be with him, and wants their relationship to work out. BUT it’s possible that Spock being out of control, he tries to avoid T’Pring, and if they meet again, she might start getting doubts. That he’s part human isn’t a problem for her, but if she saw how much he’s getting influenced, she might start getting doubts. One son of Sarek refuses to follow logical path and is in her care, what if it’s genetics? (actually might be interesting if T’Pring is the one helping Spock with regaining his shields) 

I don’t know if they will do anything with Stonn/T’Pring so soon, but Stonn is always there. I can see him as character who is extremely loyal to T’Pring, and she wants someone who will always be by her side, and them working closely with each other, will make them connect step by step.

However, I don’t think Spock ever doubted that T’Pring would wait for him. It was him, who knew he couldn’t give her what she needed, who fell in love with someone else (even two someones, actually, if you count Leila), therefore didn’t want to be with T’Pring, but he didn’t expect her to reject him. Amok Time isn’t a mutual divorce, it’s T’Pring rejecting Spock because he became a legend and was never at home and always busy. And she didn’t want to be a wife of a legend. And Spock was shocked, and he was very “I see no logic in preferring Stonn over me” about her choosing Stonn over him lol

So I kind of think that T’Pring and Stonn get closer a few years before Amok Time, not now in s2 (Amok Time is still seven years into the future). Perhaps after Kirk takes over the Enterprise and Spock stops visiting Vulcan. We know, he visited Vulcan four years before Journey to Babel, which is like a year and some before Kirk took over the Enterprise. (But the writers might not really remember lol But this is what I would like to see.)

But they seem to rush a lot of things, so who even knows. They might also enjoy their will they won’t they with Chapel and Spock and prolong it unnecessarily. I say unnecessarily, because we know that by TOS, Chapel is engaged for more than five years, Spock and Chapel aren’t together (even though thanks to SNW we can read them as they had a thing and now they’re awkward about it, and Spock rejected her), Spock meets Leila in the meantime, and Spock expects T’Pring to marry him.

001 - la'an/jim

when I started shipping it if I did: Funny story. When they announced the characters for SNW, I haven't watched TWOK yet, and for some reason I thought that the connection Khan has is with Spock. (STID made me think that, but idk if it's actually accurate, I've seen it only once). And so even though I expected Spock to be paired with either Chapel, Uhura, or Leila, I was also wondering if they wouldn't pair him with La'an because of that Khan connection (and it's not like there weren't scenes in season one supporting that). Basically ever since them announcing La'an, I expected her to be a love interest. Then I saw the finale of s1 and La'an served with Kirk, and I went !!, and around this time I also understood that the Khan connection is actually to Kirk, and I also finally watched the TOS movies a bit later. And to kind of prepare myself for a Kirk romance (even though I hoped for Kirk/Carol so much), I was like, ok, Kirk/La'an, I'm gonna commit (I even created a whole AU where Kirk just stays the Farragut captain, and McCoy and T'Pring are there too. The only fic I've written for it is mckirk-ish tho). It was all for fun, because tbh, I thought it was silly to create a character just to romance her with Kirk because "haha Khan funny". Well........ well, then the first trailer for season 2 dropped and I was like kshfjsdhfjdhsjgkhsdjkhgjk so uhm, yeah. I already went into s2 being deeply into Kirk/La'an, and it just delivered.

What makes me happy about them: They can both be vulnerable with each other.

What makes me sad about them: The future, mainly.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: I don't really read fics for them... but what annoys me is how people treat Carol (or rather Kirk’s thoughts toward her)

things I look for in fanfic: Things I would look for would be how the two of them slowly change each other, how La'an would become more relaxed and open, and how Kirk would also learn to be without his mask and pretenses and bravado more often.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: tbh? anyone who isn't Spock LMAO for both, yes

My happily ever after for them: the Farragut AU. Would take a bit of convincing for them to date as a captain and his FO, but it'd happen (in my 'verse anyway)

who is the big spoon/little spoon: Kirk/La'an

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: this is something I need to think about. I haven't come up with something "them" to do in their free time, except stuff related to their duty lol

- hmmmmmmmmmmmmm La’an said she was with Dr. Sanchez, a headshrinker... is it the same Dr. Sanchez that was in TOS or is it just a name coincidence again (like Mitchell + Mitchell - even though we don’t know if that is just “a same name no relation” yet). Like Kyle is there now and will be in TOS too [like there’s nothing wrong with having same names, because people have same names without any relations, but it’s fiction].

- I still hate that they made Sam Kirk be the one insulting Spock (I mean as long as they also make it a thing with Jim Kirk at least once or twice in snw, then I’ll take it back, but if they ignore that Kirk was all “Will you try for one moment to feel? At least act like you've got a heart.” in WNMHGB then like it’s just erasing so much from their relationship) [I just want them to respect that Kirk wasn’t always respectful towards Spock; he did not understand Spock from the get go; sure he was impressed, he was intrigued, they bonded over loyalty, duty, mutual admiration, and chess, but Kirk was not 100% respectful until the very end. Still funny that their last conversation ever ended with Spock being “don’t be insulting” because Kirk called him human.]

- ah, okay, it was not just Hemmer’s death that affected Spock. It was Duke’s, too, and his own helplessness, then lowering his shields and then not being able to get them up again. I wonder if that will still continue in s2 (would probably explain a few things in the trailers). Kinda feels like they aim to completely break Spock, in order for him to become tos!Spock, but I feel like they forgot that Spock was still quite emotional at the beginning of s1 - smiling and shouting, still being quite violent etc. But we’ll see, maybe it’ll track. The thing is... Spock had a breakdown in Discovery, Kirk’s 5ym led him to Gol to purge his emotions*, and now they want to break him in order to make him less emotional... it just feels a bit too excessive

I guess this post is still very relevant...

* maybe that’s why they made it a point that it’s something all Vulcans do, so it doesn’t feel like Spock had a breakdown and decided to purge his emotions because of that, but rather as the next step on his path to being a Vulcan because that’s what Vulcans do (maybe that was always what it was supposed to be, but the fandom (novels included) made it appear to be something different idk, like I said, I haven’t seen TMP (and I ignore kolinahr when thinking about fics set in the movie era), but it always seemed like the general consensus was that Spock chose kolinahr because he couldn’t handle his emotions anymore...)

- I wish they showed more scenes between Spock and Hemmer. There was so much potential lost in s1, I feel, just because they focused too much on romance with Spock (again, as you could notice, I don’t mind the romance and I enjoy it, I just kind of don’t get why that was what they went with. I would also love to see more Pike and Spock’s scenes, because at this point they still just work with nostalgia and viewers knowing that they’re supposed to be close... but getting those scenes would just mean more Spock screen time, which is also not something I want, so it’s just ugh LMAO I mean as long as they keep any Spock and Kirk’s scenes also this shallow, then it’s fine lol)

- SST has the next preview picture be of Kirk and I’d hate that so much if that was my first time watching. Season 2 seems to have just promo pictures rather than a screenshot from the episode, which is way better.

- I think I might watch episode 10 and then start season 2 today too, but we’ll see. 

I do kind of nitpick and have thoughts lol but I genuinely enjoy SNW and am curious where some of the stuff will lead

- this is what bothered me about episode 6. Why wasn’t La’an welcoming him and doing a security check back then? Why could Kirk just move through the ship without escort? Was it because Pike was a fleet captain and Farragut was also “his” so a free movement of personnel was okay? idk (I probably won’t finish the post ep 6 fic now, but this was a thing I wanted to address in it lol)

- love how Kirk just immediately glances at La’an in the middle of his talk with Una

“Good to see you again, La’an. You still owe me that drink, if I’m not mistaken.” - he just decided it’s gonna be an ongoing joke between them lmao

- you know, some people are so excited about Korby - but like Chapel is gonna give up her career because of him, you know? What is so good about that relationship? People will be like good for her for going after what she wants and then... she will give up her career because of him........... (I mean SNW will probably do a subversion - unless they won’t - and have her return to Starfleet because that’s what her true path is or something, but we don’t know that yet. And people seem to want Chapel to become who she was in TOS...)

- OMFG I missed that Spock called Uhura “Nyota” the first time!!!!! I also like how this episode started to show more of Uhura’s flirty side and how much she was aware of Spock in this episode. I don’t think they’re ever gonna do Spock/Uhura in SNW, but they’re finally giving me what I wanted, showing them working together, showing her teasing him, and hopefully, one day, we’ll see them work on duets together

- I absolutely LOVE that Spock was the first to start singing. And Iove how the characters just reacted “wtf is happening”. And I love Pike’s reactions so much

- I love how La’an just marches to the bridge, Kirk slowly coming after her - probably thinking wow she really wants to get away from me fast - and then she starts singing and he’s all surprised Pikachu face lmao

this opening musical number is so funny. I love it so much

- no but really, Spock/Uhura scenes are so good

- so grateful for that Una/Kirk scene and conversation and a DUET!

- Wesley really studied Shatner, he even moves like him

- I’m so happy they gave me Kirk and La’an working together and still kind of mirroring their dynamic from Tomorrow3, but since Kirk isn’t the captain, he’s more apologetic (but not really). But he just wants to spend time with La’an (I’m probably gonna talk about this later in another post, but I think that because he has feelings for La’an - which he might not have actually been aware of until later - he just feels good around her and he sees working with her as working with anyone else - and she isn’t a scientist, she’s a tactician like him - but because he does have those feelings and feels really comfortable with her, sometimes the lines get blurry. But tbh it’s similar to the hot dog period and Kirk wasn’t flirting with her back then either)

- when Una sings about secrets and how they can keep you up at night and cut like a knife and it’s showing M’Benga and Chapel 👀

and then “a road to a ruin” and cut to Spock

- “We make a good pair. We should team up more often.” 🥺

- “Jim.” <3 (I kinda like that she was the first one - except for Sam - to use it, since everyone is like “James”. And ofc Pike in the finale but different timeline)

- of course, Kirk should see that La’an doesn’t treat him as a “friend” (he’s not stupid) and shouldn’t encourage her, but again, because I don’t think he’s in love with Carol, he’s forgetting himself because he feels the connection between himself and La’an, and he wants to enjoy the short time they have together. It’s not like they can meet that often. And lbr he’s not actually doing or saying anything inappropriate, but he isn’t innocent either (as in “he’s just like this, it’s all friendly, means nothing, he’s just misunderstood because ‘society’”. It’s not because he later says he “feels the connection”, so his actions are influenced by that connection and “i felt like i knew you”) - he is in a relationship, even if he thinks it’s a complicated one.

- is the Klingon captain played by Hemmer’s actor?

- Uhura and Spock just going to Chapel, and Spock making her feel things in order to make her sing. Cool guys. You brought this on yourself, Spock.

- when Jim messed up, it was when he asked La’an “Am I anything like the other me?” (his voice all changed). Well, I mean he was definitely caught in the moment and didn’t really think in that moment, and it backfired because when La’an told him that she liked how he looked at her, that he really saw her, he realized the gravity of the situation and what he was doing.

I think the dialogue was a bit awkward, since they needed to give us info, but I don’t think Kirk needed to tell La’an “I think you’d like Carol. She’s a lot like you.” - even though I guess it was meant as “I know you loved the other me, but I think you’d be happy with the choice I made here.” (even though I have feelings for you too^^)

(in any case I don’t think Kirk is in love with Carol, as I mentioned before. She’s important to him, she’s going to have his child, but he isn’t in love with her. That was always my impression from TWOK, and SNW just made that reading also possible. Maybe later seasons will invalidate it idk but for now, I’m going with this, because if I write a fic, I’m gonna go with it too. Now I wonder if I ever mentioned Carol in my mckirk fics, or if I only alluded to Janet hmmm Janet was always the one who broke Kirk’s heart for me; Carol and Areel were never serious relationships in my head.)

also in any case don’t @ me about how Kirk was disrespectful towards both Carol and La’an. I know that. Kirk’s an asshole. Yes, I like him anyway.

- people get obsessed with Spock telling Kirk “let me help” so I hope they also get obsessed with Uhura telling Spock “let me help” :P

- does the Enterprise only have 200 members? How???? It’s 430 in TOS....

- I love how Jim is like “points at Sam” while singing “we work better all together” (also he just casually seats at La’an’s console..... I know you’re a phaser officer or whatever, but it’s not your ship)

- I’ll also take the smile Kirk and La’an shared during the final number as “no hard feelings; we can still work together because we make a good team” (since s3 is far in the future anyway) 

- Spock really loves being the crew of the Enterprise. His running forward and joining the dance 🥺

- I also like they chose to put Kirk next to La’an when they’re all connected. It probably means nothing, but I do not care lol (I’m kinda sad they didn’t show the right side when they were all hugging and shaking hands, because I’d like to see if Kirk and La’an ignored each other like Spock and Chapel or not) [Also Pike and Una hugged in the blurred background and they didn’t show that either :/]

I always thought Sybok was cool and interesting and NOW I’m sure! You know it’s times like these that I’m grateful I kinda came back into the Star Trek fandom on my own, because I don’t have to deal with Opinions of older/louder Trekkies. This one kinda has a lukewarm reputation but I’m getting the vibe that I’ll genuinely enjoy it.

Okay, seriously, I unironically love this movie, it might be my favorite out of the ones I’ve seen so far actually. TMP felt like the movies getting their sea legs, but it was slow and messy, it wasn’t as thought provoking as it wanted to be (aside from Spock’s wonderful arc in that film). WoK & TSFS are amazing for drama and angst and Spirk content, but they weren’t really asking the big questions Star Trek is wonderful for. Then The Voyage Home is just plain silly and fun and wholesome. But this, this movie had depth! The whole premise is “what is god and is there is one?” I LOVE that as someone who has a very complicated relationship with spirituality. I also already loved the TOS episodes This Side of Paradise, Return To Tomorrow, The Omega Glory and The Way To Eden, and this movie had the best of those concepts! Sybok was such a fascinating antagonist/anti-hero and I hope we get to see him explored more on screen one day, even if it’s just through Discovery/SNW flashbacks. It may have started off slow and it’s not without its flaws but this felt like the Star Trekkiest TOS Star Trek movie so far!
