I was inspired by this OTP Question from @kyra75 : How would they react to someone flirting with them? Flirting with their significant other. Kyra asked for all four of my pairings, and I decided I'd write a little fic for each one. Tobias x Casey's can be found here. If inspiration hits, I'll write one for Trystan x Carolina (CoP) and Eli x Zoe (WTD), too. Thanks so much for the inspiration, Kyra!
Book: Open Heart (Book 3 Timeline) Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Kaycee MacClennan (F!MC) Rating: Teen Words: 2,005 Summary: Ethan and Kaycee are on their way to the first conference they're attending together since making their relationship public. But it seems that everyone didn't receive the memo. Fortunately, they don't get jealous.
A/N: Participating in @choicesprompts Flufftober #7 - Acceptance.

The sun was just starting to peek through the Boston sky when Ethan and Kaycee emerged from the lobby of their apartment building, causing the befuddled doorman to do a double-take as Ethan nodded his way. Seeing him up at this ungodly hour (for a morning jog... of all things) was commonplace, but a Kaycee spotting this early in the day was almost unheard of. Still, she was all but glowing as she hopped into their waiting cab.
Once nestled in the back seat, she leaned over and planted a kiss on her boyfriend’s cheek. “Finally! We're attending a conference where we don’t have to pretend we're not together anymore!"
Ethan smiled, but there was a hint of judgment in it. “Why is that so important? It’s not as if we intend to put on a soft porn performance in the reception area?”
“Which is really a pity,” Kaycee laughed. “I’m sure some of the old fuddy-duddies in attendance could use a pointer or two. It would be a public service, really."
This time, he smiled genuinely, pulling her under his arm with a chuckle. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with you.”
“Oh, I have some ideas,” she teased. “But seriously! Aren't you excited? We can hold hands, acknowledge each other, and we don’t have to pretend we’re unbothered when others flirt with us.”
“Well, that was never an issue," Ethan insisted. "I don’t get jealous. Jealousy is for people with trust issues, and I trust you.”
Kaycee raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a smile. “And you should trust me, but, babe, you do get jealous sometimes."
“No," he insisted. " I don’t."
“All right,” she smiled with amusement. She didn’t push further, but in her mind, it was game on.
Santa Monica was beautiful at this time of year, and their resort was already bustling when they arrived, filled with tourists and conventioneers alike. Doctors from all over America were milling about, networking over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. It was an atmosphere that Kaycee thrived in, but Ethan did his very best to avoid. But one thing was certain: the atmosphere was ripe for flirtation, and Kaycee was already thinking of the long game.
She was the first to experience it, only moments after they arrived. As they headed toward the registration table, a tall, handsome surgeon from New York spotted Kaycee and all but jogged over to greet her. His hazel eyes were alight as he neared her. “Dr. MacClennan, correct?” he grinned with a bit too much confident charm. “We met at the cardiothoracic symposium in Chicago last year, and I’ve been looking forward to running into you again ever since.”
Kaycee politely returned his smile but stepped closer to Ethan, trying to give the suave surgeon an easy way out.
“That’s so kind of you to say,” she replied. “And you are?”
“Dr. Barrington from NYU-Langone,” he smiled, so taken in with Kaycee he never even saw Ethan standing by her side. “I was wondering if you’re free tonight. My hospital is hosting a private dinner, and most of the convention’s keynote speakers will be there. I’d love for you to join me if you can.”
Kaycee opened her mouth to reply, but before she could get a word out, Ethan spoke calm, but direct. “We have plans,” was all he said, but Kaycee swore his tone brought the temperature in the crowded room down ten degrees.
Suddenly aware of Ethan, the surgeon blinked. “Oh. Well, I see.” He turned to Kaycee, undeterred; there may have even been a wink. “Well, next time?”
Ethan cursed under his breath as Dr. Barrington walked away, and Kaycee stifled a laugh. “But you don’t get jealous, right, hon?”
“I’m not jealous,” he shot back. “I was just doing my part to save you from an extremely boring dinner when you have much better plans with me.”
“Oh, that's what that was,” she grinned, straightening the collar of Ethan’s linen shirt. “And what do those plans involve?”
He dropped his lips to her ear, whispering in a way that made Kaycee forget all about this little game. “It involves you, me, a bottle of champagne, our bed, and very little clothing.”
“You’re right,” she giggled, looping her arm in his. “Your plans sound much more appealing.”
Throughout the conference, there were many more flirtatious encounters, each more entertaining than the last. At one of the panel sessions, a beautiful conference organizer set her sights on Ethan. A statuesque woman with long, dark hair and dazzling blue eyes moved to Ethan’s side. The compliments she bestowed on him were flowing faster than the wine, and she leaned in just a little too close.
“Dr. Ramsey,” she beamed. “I’m Dr. Monica Rivera. I’ve been dying to meet you in person.”
“Have you,” he replied. “Then I hope you won’t be disappointed.”
“Doubtful,” she simpered, eyeing him from head to toe. “I’ve always found your research to be so inspiring,” she said, brushing her hand against his arm. “I’d love to discuss some thoughts I have with you. Perhaps over a drink later?”
Ethan, who was entirely focused on his presentation, didn’t have the time for this. “I don’t drink,” he stated flatly.
Dr. Rivera’s face faltered, but she recovered quickly. “Well, then, over coffee?”
Ethan glanced at her, annoyance etched on his face. “I don’t drink coffee either.”
Kaycee, who had been observing the exchange from a few feet away, bit back a laugh as the woman walked away, clearly confused and discouraged. Ethan, focused as ever, was already looking over his notes when Kaycee appeared at his side.
“You don’t drink alcohol or coffee?” She laughed. “Are you about to tell me you aren't really a doctor? You don't like opera? Because that’s all that’s left of your identity, sir!”
He turned to her with a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Were you jealous, my dear?”
“What?" She laughed. "Not at all. Entertained? Yes. Amused? Without question. But jealous, nah. She’s got nothing on me.”
Ethan leaned over, the scent of Kaycee’s perfume intoxicating as he surreptitiously placed a kiss on her cheek. “Now, that’s the truth.”
As dusk began to fall, they met up at a cocktail hour by the pool. They had spent the majority of the day attending separate workshops, and Kaycee was looking forward to catching up with Ethan. But before they could enjoy a drink together, another attendee, this time a young doctor from Johns Hopkins, slid up next to her.
“You must be Kaycee MacClennan,” he said, flashing a bright smile. “You’re even more beautiful than I heard.”
Kaycee raised an eyebrow. “It's Doctor Kaycee MacClennan,” she retorted. “And, really? That’s what you heard? We’re at a medical conference with our peers, and that’s what you’ve heard about me?”
“Well, among other things,” he replied smoothly, his eyes lingering on her. “I also hear you’ve been doing some groundbreaking work at Edenbrook. Perhaps you could fill me in over dinner. What do you say?”
Kaycee crossed her arms, amazed the man couldn’t see how annoyed she was. “Well,” she began when she felt a strong arm encircle her waist.
“We’re not available for dinner,” Ethan declared, his steel blue eyes daring the charlatan to say another word.
The young doctor blinked, clearly thrown. “Oh, uh, I didn’t realize—”
“Well, now you do,” Ethan said dismissively as the doctor scurried away.
Kaycee couldn’t help but chuckle as they walked away. “Thanks for the save, babe. But I had it under control.”
“Of that, I have no doubt,” Ethan replied.
“But you had to step in,” she grinned. “Because you might have been a little jealous?”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “He was wasting your time, and I wanted to be with you."
“Right,” she teased, nudging him playfully. “Jealousy had nothing to do with it.”
The day continued the same way, with Ethan maintaining a stoic front as others flirted relentlessly with Kaycee, and she quietly relished watching him jump in every single time. She couldn’t wait to tease him about it later, but that would have to wait until after the final reception – where everything was about to change.
Dr. Allison Porter was the star of the conference, the main keynote speaker, and a world-renowned cardiologist with a smile that could light up a room. She was holding court tonight, and everyone wanted her attention, but she was only interested in one doctor from Boston. When she spotted him alone at the bar, she knew it was time to make her move.
“Dr. Ramsey, I presume,” she grinned, extending a well-manicured hand as she approached.
“Dr. Porter,” he nodded politely while shaking her hand. “It’s lovely to make your acquaintance.”
“Likewise, I’m sure. And please, call me Allison." Her eyes twinkled as she assessed Ethan, though he didn't seem to notice. “I’ve been watching you from afar for some time now. The work you’ve done at Edenbrook is truly awe-inspiring.”
“Well,” Ethan laughed softly. “I’m very proud of the work we've achieved, but awe-inspiring may be a bit of hyperbole.”
“Don’t underestimate yourself, Dr. Ramsey. You should hear how others speak of you at the conference.”
“Really?” he smirked, raising his glass of Scotch to his lips. “I’m usually better off not knowing what my colleagues are saying about me when I’m not in earshot.”
Allison tossed her head back, laughing much too enthusiastically, and that caught Kaycee’s attention from across the room. Amused, she grabbed a flute of champagne off a passing waiter’s tray and shifted positions so she could get a better view of the show taking place. She wondered how long it would take for Ethan to become flustered or have that familiar scowl take over his face. But as she continued to watch, it never occurred. Instead, he seemed taken in by the conversation, which was fine... until Dr. Porter placed her hand on Ethan’s arm.
“Excuse me,” Kaycee said with a plastered smile as she turned on her heel and made her way across the crowded room. Allison’s voice was lithe, almost sultry, as Kaycee approached from behind.
“Ethan, I think you and I should definitely...collaborate... sometime. I have no doubt that we could...accomplish great things together.”
“Hey, sweetheart,” Kaycee announced as she took her place at Ethan's side. “I’ve been looking for you! I should have known to check the bar first!”
“Yes,” he replied. “I’m surprised that wasn’t your first thought. Kaycee, this is Dr. Allison Porter, Dr. Porter, my teammate and partner, Dr. Kaycee MacClennan.”
“Oh,” Dr. Porter said, attempting to hide her surprise. “It’s lovely to meet you. I’ve read your work as well, Dr. MacClennan...  didn’t realize that you two were...”
“Yes, we are,” Kaycee beamed confidently. “Very happily so.”
Allison’s eyes narrowed slightly before she took her leave, and Kaycee turned to Ethan with a sarcastic smirk. “Collaboration, huh?” She said, taking a sip of Ethan’s drink. “Collaboration, my ass. She wanted... something else.”
Ethan cleared his throat, obviously amused. “Are we... what’s the word... jealous, Dr. MacClennan?”
“What? Me?” Kaycee replied. “Absolutely not! I don’t get jealous. I trust you!”
“OK,” Ethan smiled softly. “Whatever you say.” He moved in closer. “Why don’t we get some fresh air? I'd like to get away from all these people lusting after us.”
"Hmm. We do have that effect on people, don't we?" She smiled. "But you can be honest. You just want to get me alone. Don't you?"
"Always," he growled in her ear.
They left and walked along the beach hand-in-hand, their footsteps mingling with the sound of waves crashing against the shore. As they recounted the day’s events, Kaycee nudged Ethan with her shoulder.
“Admit it,” she said, smiling. “You got jealous. More than once."
He glanced at her, his face still stoic but his eyes warm. “Jealousy is beneath me. But you, you may have turned a slight shade of green when you saw Dr. Porter speaking to me. But don't worry, I think it’s kind of cute.”
"What! I was not jealous!" Kaycee insisted, contemplating kicking sand at him if it wouldn't have made her look like a child. "I was not jealous at all!"
Ethan gave her a long look, and finally, a ghost of a smile tugged at the corner of Kaycee's mouth. “All right. Maybe... a little," she grinned. "But admit it, you got a little jealous today, too."
"Fine," he surrendered. "I did."
Kaycee grinned, slipping her hand into his. “Thought so.”
Kaycee shook her head as they continued to walk. "What is it about these things? The minute the lectures are over, it's like someone pumps an aphrodisiac into the air."
Ethan laughed but agreed with her assessment. "I never understood it," he said. "These are professional events. People should act... professionally. I would never lower myself to behaving that way."
Kaycee's eyes flicked to his, the moonlight showing the shadows of her smile. "Seriously? Do you remember Miami? I was there, you know."
"That's different," he insisted. "That was... you."
"Mmm-hmm. But you had been with me in Boston plenty of times, but it took Miami for you to finally come to - then quickly take loss of - your senses."
Ethan stopped in his tracks, his hands finding Kaycee's waist and pulling her near. He kissed her so passionately, so intensely, that she forgot what she was saying - which may have been the very point. He pulled away with a playful grin.
"Enough of this. What do you say we head back to our room and remind ourselves why no one else here stood a chance?"
"Sounds good to me," she said, jumping into his arms. "And Ethan?"
"Yes?"
"I really wasn't jealous."
"All right, Kaycee," he winked. "Whatever you say."

Mini Rant here...
Tumblr media
I don't think Pixelberry realises what a Gold Mine its sitting on
Tumblr media
The potential for Choices stories that are adapted into other games/media like movies or TV shows is endless. Fantasy stories like Blades would do really well. Crime of Passions would probably be a hit if given to the right person to direct since it's got literally everything - cults, murders, an exiled Prince. Haven't played HSS story yet, but the way the fandom is so enamoured with it makes me think that the younger Netflix-orientated post gen-Z (or even Gen-Z, which I am) would love it. Don't even get me started on 'The Royal Romance.' The first three books alone would probably fuel the main cast into super-stardom. Endless Summer would probably go down in history, though a few things might need to be changed so they don't get sued by the people who made Lost.
Alastair's dad is literally evil Tony Stark for crying out loud!
Tumblr media
(I mean....look at him!🤯✴️)
Side note: And just in case anyone cares... would love to write a script for/direct/act in/produce any Blades Live Action material. Love that series with all my heart. I'm really into film, so I would love to bring that to life.

Just shy of three years ago, I happily stepped in to help when @choicesficwriterscreations needed assistance with CFWC Fics of the Week. Shortly thereafter, the blog's original creator, @loricreates, was ready to step down, and along with @lucy-268 I was honored to take over and continue the great work Lori had started.
The CFWC archive provides an invaluable service to our fandom, but it was always so much more to me. It's a place where people connect, friendships are fostered, and our incredibly talented creators have a chance to be seen and appreciated.
It has been my pleasure to serve as CFWC's mod, and I'm very proud of the contributions I have made during that time. But it's also a lot of work, and lately, it was beginning to feel like a chore. That's when I knew it was time to say goodbye. I'm not going far; I'll still be in the fandom. I may even show up here to help host a special event or two in the future, but for now, I want to spend my time concentrating on other things, both in and outside of the fandom. That includes my writing, catching up on reading, and supporting each of you.
I want to thank @lorircreates, CFWC's founder, for her vision, for creating this space, and for entrusting it to me. It was an honor to take the reins from you, and I hope we've done your "baby" proud.
I want to thank @lucy-268, who was a dream co-moderator. We sure had a lot of good (and crazy) times running the blog together. I'm so glad this fandom brought us together... and we'll stay that way long after this fandom is gone. 💙
I'd like to thank @liaromancewriter, who has graciously offered to take over so that CFWC can continue. Please join me in welcoming Mal as the blog's new moderator! It makes me feel much better knowing I'm leaving CFWC in your hands!
Most of all, I want to thank all of you. Each and every one of you has made our fandom what it is. The creators who make us laugh, cry, and feel things we never expected to feel. The readers and art fans who have encouraged everyone along the way. Everyone who has ever "geeked out" over a beloved story, character, or OC together. Through CFWC, I've gotten to know many of you better, and that has been the best part of the time I've spent here.
So this is my final CFWC post... one last time! :) I can't wait to see what the future brings! 😘

(Ethan Ramsey x F!MC) in a Choices Open Heart One Shot
As requested by
@hopelessromantic1352 with the prompt "You can't keep doing this."
A/N Here you go my sweet friend. Thank you for sending these requests to me to help with inspiration. I know you specifically wanted this one with both Ethan and Chris, so I'm going back to book 1 for you so that Tobias won't steal her away 😉
I was also inspired by the Dr. Who gifs below for this one. For those who don't know, Karen Gillian is my FC for Chris Valentine. Don't worry, I'm not making Matt Smith my FC for Ethan 😂 This interaction though reminded me of something Ethan and Chris would have done and it fit my idea for the above prompt.

It was too much. All of it was more than Chris could take. Tears blurred her vision as she finally had a chance to react to the mayhem she'd just finished being a part of.
Ripping off the surgical scrubs covered in Rafael's blood, she dashed blindly down the corridor. Her breaths hitched as sobs threatened to spill out. All she could think of was running away from the absolute hell of the subway accident. She needed to get as far as she could before losing her strained hold on her emotions.
Ignoring the alarm of the exhausted nurses and doctors, she ran past them without saying a word.
She stumbled out of one of the side doors of the hospital and barreled into a familiar solid form.
Ethan grunted on impact. He grasped her arms once he recognized her.
"Chris?" He leaned down closer to see her more clearly in the darkness. "What happened?"
Tears began to spill down her cheeks. Of all the people in the world she could possibly bump into at this moment, it would be him.
"I have to go." She choked out, wrenching herself from his grasp.
He grabbed her once more to stop her escape.
"Are you all right?" He demanded in a harsh voice while giving her a slight shake.
There were few things in this world he could not tolerate and seeing Chris in this emotional state topped that list.
"No!" She cried out, her voice echoing across the parking lot.
In a jumble or words and sobs, she managed to tell him about the rush of patients they had in the emergency room.
Once her ability to speak became impossible, he gripped her hand and took her back into the hospital.
"No. I don't want to go back inside!" she struggled against his hold.
She stilled as he led her up the emergency stairwell towards the roof.
He chose a spot overlooking Boston and sat down.
Ethan glanced up and saw she was immobile once again with tears falling in steady streams down her cheeks. Taking her hand, he tugged her down.
She collapsed beside him and buried her head against her knees, her body wracked with silent cries.
He'd seen her like this before. When Delores died, she'd been unable to stop her tears. He'd found her alone in the locker room, silently crying at the unfairness of it all.
Setting his hand on her shoulder, he gently pulled her closer to his side.
"You can't keep doing this, Chris." He told her. "If you keep taking death to heart like this, then being a doctor will destroy you."
She wiped her eyes, and settled her chin on her knees.
"I know that." She said in a voice cracking with emotion. "But it was so much, Ethan. Everywhere I turned there was someone in the midst of dying or who was screaming in pain. I wanted to fix it all but I couldn't."
"Did you help them?" He asked.
"If you can call it that." She said bitterly. "I assessed, tagged, and moved on like Zaid told me to."
He squeezed her in a side hug. "I never doubted for a moment that you did the right thing."
His comforting touch and praise tore at her heart.
"Don't." She pleaded. "Don't be nice to me right now."
Chris could feel the tears rising once more. After all they felt for one another, his quitting, and now showing up when she needed him most; she thought she would truly break if he was kind to her.
She rested her head on his shoulder, nuzzling close to him once his arm dropped. "Please sit here with me, but don't be nice."
Ethan leaned his head against hers and snorted. "Everyone complains when I'm not nice and yet here you are demanding the opposite."
Chris bit back a tearful smile. "I think this is one request of mine you're willing to give in."
"I think we both know I always give in to what you want."
"If that were true, you wouldn't have left Edenbrook." She mumbled. "And you wouldn't have left me."
He cursed. "Chris, you know why I left Edenbrook. And as for you..."
He trailed off.
She looked up at him.
"As for me?"
He met her red rimmed eyes and felt his will falter. He'd once had such plans to protect and guide her career forward. He was going to not only show her how to be a doctor but watch as she became a great one. He'd ended up doing nothing but letting her down in the end. He'd failed to keep his unexpected feelings for her in check and he'd failed her as a mentor.
Seeing the quiet anguish he was under, she nestled her head back on his shoulder, leaving the issue alone for once.
He swallowed the words that were demanding to come out. He wanted to tell her he'd never leave her. He would always want her.
He loved her.
I'm not worthy to tell her anything like that, he thought to himself. Not now, possibly not ever.
"What are you doing here?" She asked after a long stretch of silence.
"Marlene left me a message saying that the hospital needed all the help they could get." He answered, grateful she wasn't pushing him into revealing more of what he wasn't ready for.
"What took you so long?" She playfully nudged him with her elbow.
A hint of smile appeared on her face when she heard his exasperated groan.
"I was out of town, Rookie." He grumbled.
"Having a good time?" She asked.
"I wouldn't say that." He muttered. "I went to see my dad and then I went on to--"
He bit his tongue. He couldn't get her hopes up that his visits to Mrs. Martinez's family would come to any good.
"To where?" She asked.
"Nowhere in particular." He lied. "I needed to drive and clear my head."
"I think I need a vacation like that." She mumbled. "I wish I could forget and leave everything behind for a while."
He wrapped his arm around her once more. "It's a pipe dream. There's no way you can fully leave everything behind, no matter how badly you want to."
"How badly did you want to?"
"More than anything."
She slipped her arms around his waist and hugged him.
He held her, taking every bit of comfort she was willing to give him. It's ironic, he thought. He'd brought her up here to comfort her. He had no intentions of letting her know his own struggles.
Ethan should have known that out of everyone he knew, Chris would know what he was feeling. Not only that, she would also give him exactly what he needed from her in this moment.
Neither was sure how long they sat there, holding one another. The soothing hum of the city below them and the stars above were all they needed as they sat together in companionable silence.
When the first blush of dawn began to light the sky, Ethan whispered that he'd take her home.
He got up first and offered his hand to Chris.
She lifted her tear stained face up to smile softly at him.
Taking his hand, she stood up and was pulled into his embrace. He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead when she slipped her arms around him again.
"You're going to be okay." He said, lips brushing hers with each word.
She nodded, her eyes meeting his after one last sweet kiss.
"We both will." She vowed.
Together, hand in hand, they went off to face another day.

the best mistake he never had [drake x Camille AU] [part four]
Tumblr media
Lily burst into the house, trying her best not to cry. It was rare that Camille shouted at her and it had been a shock to the system for the five year old.
Camille preferred disciplining by talking. No corporal punishment, no shouting. She wanted to take the time to understand her daughter and explain why certain behaviour wasn't acceptable.
But seeing Lily with Drake had filled her with so much anxiety that she couldn't help it. She had shouted at Lily.
Lily went upstairs to find her grandma. She wanted comfort.
‘Grandma?’ she called.
‘I’m in bed, sweetheart!’ Gisele replied. ‘Come through.’
Lily entered the room. As soon as her grandma set eyes on her, her face fell. ‘Ohhh mon petit Fleur..’ she whispered. She reached out for her granddaughter. ‘Come here.’
Lily sniffled and climbed onto the bed, careful not to disturb her grandma too much as she looked so delicate. She gently laid her head on her chest and inhaled Gisele's scent of jasmine perfume and instantly felt her mind quieten.
‘What’s happened?’ Gisele asked quietly.
Lily sniffed. ‘Mommy shouted at me because I was brushing Lone Star and talking to Drake.’
She felt Gisele stiffen but she didn't question it.
‘And she said I shouldn't speak to strangers,’ Lily continued. ‘Because strangers are bad but Drake was nice.’
Gisele cleared her throat and cuddled Lily deeper. ‘It’s just you and your mommy,’ she said softly. ‘She wants you to be safe and since you don't know Drake, he is a stranger to you. Yes, he can be a nice man but that doesn't mean you should speak to him unless your mommy or I are there.’
Lily bit her lip. ‘That’s unfair on him and Lone Star.’
Gisele chuckled despite herself. ‘Lily, are you just mad because you want the horse?’
Lily turned and pouted. ‘No!’ she protested.
Gisele smiled and pressed a kiss on Lily's head. ‘You don't speak to someone you don't know unless you have your mommy or me there, okay? That's not just a rule for you, that's a rule for all children.’
Lily sighed. She knew she couldn't protest against that if the rule applied to all children.
She was a child who obeyed rules and liked everything to be just right. She rarely strayed from the safe path.
Lily also felt things deeply and that often meant she didn't want to upset anyone. She especially didn't want to upset Camille because Camille was her entire world.
She didn't want to upset her mommy, ever.
If that meant no more Lone Star or talking to Drake, then she wouldn't go near them again.
*******************
That evening, Drake was back in his local bar, where he tended to spend most evenings.
Yes, he had work at the ranch in the early mornings but Drake had since admitted to himself that he was basically a high functioning alcoholic and he could deal with a sore head and dry mouth if it meant he could drink whisky and forget about all this shit for a while.
This shit being meeting his daughter for the first time today and Camille's anger about it.
Fuck.
Drake downed his whisky and gestured to Leo, the bartender and friend, for another.
‘You alright man?’ Leo asked, frowning as he began to pour Drake another. ‘You’re quieter than usual.’
Drake smirked. ‘I’m fine, Leo.’
Leo raised his eyebrows and passed Drake the glass. He studied him for a moment, his green eyes roaming Drake's face.
‘So I heard Camille is back,’ he said bluntly. ‘And a mini Camille too.’
Drake gripped the glass. ‘Leo. Shut up.’
Leo proceeded to dry the wet glasses, not once taking his eyes off Drake. He didn't understand him. Sure, Leo was not a family man, he was allergic to commitment. If a woman he slept with had gotten pregnant with his baby, he would have run a mile.
But Drake wasn't like Leo. Drake, although a bit of a loner and hardly a womaniser, was the kind of guy who looked like he would want a relationship and a kid. The women he had dated in the past had always been long term.
Plus she was Camille Montespan. She was in Leo’s spank bank.
He loved her name. Fucking sexy and French.
Anyway, who in their right mind would reject Camille Montespan? She was the town sweetheart. Always friendly, always up for a laugh, drop dead gorgeous.
Pretty much every guy in Applewood had had a crush on her at some point, Leo included.
You sleep with girls. You marry women like Camille Montespan.
If Camille had slept with him and had his baby, Leo would gone against all of his instincts and settled down with her. Because you don't give up the chance to be with a woman like her. Even Leo knew that.
So why the fuck did Drake fuck it up?
He didn't know what had happened five years ago with Drake and Camille. Drake never spoke about it. Had it been a drunken fling? A secret romance?
All Leo knew was that Camille and his daughter were Drake's sore spots. You could insult him about anything and he would shrug it off, acting like he didn't care. But if you mentioned Camille and his daughter, Drake would turn defensive.
Before Leo could respond to Drake, the door opened and in walked Maxwell Beaumont.
‘Hey Leo!’ he greeted him as if Leo was the best thing in the world at that moment.
Leo smiled. ‘Hey Max. What can I get you?’
‘Ooohh.. a pina colada please.’
‘Coming right up, good sir!’ Leo said. Maxwell always ordered a fancy cocktail and it was always interesting to see what he would order his time.
Drake sipped his whisky and cast a glance over at Maxwell who was studiously scrolling through his phone and making a point not to speak to Drake.
‘How are ya doing, Max?’ Drake finally said, breaking the horrible silence.
‘Fine,’ Maxwell replied, his voice montone.
Leo eyed the two of them as he shook the cocktail shaker, wishing Drake would just stop trying.
Ever since Camille left town, Maxwell swore never to talk to Drake again. He was Camille’s best friend and incredibly loyal to her. If you hurt Camille, you hurt Maxwell.
He was like sunshine personified with everyone except Drake. Even though Drake understood, it didn't mean that he liked it.
‘So I saw Camille and Lily today -’
‘Don’t even say their names,’ Maxwell interrupted, his voice like ice. ‘Don’t you dare.’
Drake's jaw set. He picked up his glass of whisky and downed it before gesturing to Leo for another.
However, Leo was staring at Maxwell with his mouth open, cocktail shaker gripped tightly in his hands. He knew Maxwell hated Drake but Jesus Christ, he was quick to the punch.
‘Sorry..’ Drake muttered, taking a sip of his drink.
‘No, you don't say sorry to me,’ Maxwell said, his voice starting to rise, ‘you say sorry to Camille. But you won't because you really don't give a shit about her.’
Drake exhaled. ‘Leo, can I have another drink?’
Leo coughed and picked up the whisky bottle, pouring him another. He then served Maxwell his Pina colada, hoping the two of them wouldn't fight right here at his bar.
Drake downed the whisky.
‘Yup, get drunk like you always do…’ Maxwell muttered, his lips brushing the straw in his glass. ‘Classic Walker.’
Drake was up on his feet in an instant. ‘Right man, you got something to say? Fucking say it.’
‘Woah, calm down!’ Leo panicked. ‘You’re going to upset my other patrons…’
‘Who, Bill at the back? Drake hissed. ‘He doesn't give a shit.’
Maxwell sipped his Pina colada, cool as a cucumber. He looked away from Drake , not bothering to give him any eye contact. Drake stared at the side of his face.
‘You know it's none of your business what happened between me and Camille right?’ he asked, keeping his voice neutral. Unfortunately , his voice was slurring now thanks to the whisky he had downed.
‘I know you're her fucking guard dog who needs any excuse to jump but you don't know the ins and outs of this. You weren't there.’
Maxwell turned to look at Drake. His eyes were narrowed. ‘Excuse me?’ he whispered.
‘So guys, you watch the Texans game on Sunday?’ Leo asked, his voice high. ‘Great game -’
‘I get she's your friend and you are sticking by her but you don't know the full story so you can't exactly make your mind up about me,’ Drake continued. ‘You’re judging me without actually talking to me about it.’
Drake had a secret. Despite acting like he didn't give a shit about anything, he hated it when people judged him. All he wanted was to be accepted but people rarely did.
Maxwell rose so he stood over Drake, which wasn't hard as Drake was sitting on the bar stool. The tables would turn if Drake stood up because he had a clear five inches over Maxwell.
So he stood up.
Maxwell stared up at him, his eyes flashing. ‘I was there to pick up the pieces after you took her heart and ripped it into two,’ he said quietly, his tone dangerous. ‘I was there to listen to her as she told me how cruel you were, how you said it had been a drunken mistake, that it should never have happened. She was broken up, Drake. She felt like shit, like nothing-’
‘I didn't mean to make her feel like that!’ Drake burst out. ‘I didn't word it correctly-’
‘She told you that she was pregnant with your baby and you told her you didn't want anything to do with her!’
‘It wasn't meant to come out like that!’
‘Guys, please, can we stop?’ Leo interrupted, desperate for peace.
‘She always stuck up for you!’ Maxwell shouted, pushing Drake in the chest. Drake stumbled back, catching himself on the bar. ‘When everyone in school took the piss out of you, called you names, ignored you, she was there to defend you! She thought you were a good guy!’
‘I am a good guy!’ Drake shouted back. ‘I made a crappy decision but I am a good-’
‘No, you're a selfish asshole,’ Maxwell cut in. ‘You could have stood by her. You didn't have to say you'd step up and be a dad but for fucks sake, you could have at least paid her child support!’
There was a horrible, thick silence.
Leo looked between the two of them and exhaled. ‘Guys. Get out of my bar.’
Drake swallowed. ‘I.. I offered to pay her child support and she said she didn't want anything from me.’
Maxwell stared at him. ‘You should have ignored her and done it anyway. But instead you wiped your hands clean of them. Happy to stay in Texas working on that ranch and drinking yourself stupid at night. That's what you chose, Drake.’
Drake shook his head and raised his hands. ‘I can't take this anymore -’
‘Good,’ Leo interrupted, his voice sharp. ‘Both of you are done. Get out. I won't ask again.’
Drake grabbed his denim jacket and pushed some dollars at Leo. ‘Sorry Leo.’
Leo nodded mutely and took the cash. ‘Sober up, Drake. And you, Maxwell,’ he eyed Maxwell who was downing the last of his pina colada. ‘Don’t talk shit about something you don't know about.’
‘But I do!’ Maxwell protested.
Leo pointed at Drake who was now leaving the bar with his shoulders heavy and head low.
‘You clearly don't.’

January Creator of the Month: Jerzwriter
Tumblr media
Each month, CFWC highlights one of our talented fanfic writers or artists, and this month’s creator of the month is CFWC's own @jerzwriter.  The writer is selected at random. More info can be found on the navigation page.

Tumblr Blog Complete Masterlist
How do you want to be known on Tumblr?
Elsa
More below...
1- When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played?
It was sometime in 2017, and the first book I ever played was The Royal Romance, Book 1.
2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?
I joined a couple Facebook groups in 2019. I just wanted to discuss stories with others who were interested, as no one in my real life reads Choices. I didn't even know I was entering a fandom. lol I started reading fanfic on Tumblr the following year, but I found Tumblr intimidating, so I was mostly a silent reader. I didn’t start writing and contributing until May 2021, mostly because Open Heart was ending and I was in denial. 🙂
3- How did you pick your blog name?
It’s pretty boring, actually. I’m from NJ, and I write. I wanted it to be JerZwriter, so people would know it is Jer-ZEE-Writer, but that wasn’t doable, so it’s Jerzwriter, and most think it is Jerz-Writer. Oh, well!
4- Pull up the first and last posts in your archive, and tell us about them!
My first post was the first chapter of my Ethan x Casey x Tobias love triangle, Delaying the Inevitable (OH).  It was my very first fanfic and I really didn't think I'd write anything beyond that.  I was so green back then, not only to fanfic but to the fandom as well. I’m really glad that I was naive because I don’t think I would have had the courage to post it if I had, but I’m glad that I did.
My last post was Falling for You, a little drabble I wrote for Tobias x Casey (OH), and it featured a commission by the talented artist @weetlebeetle. It was a light, fun piece that took place early in Tobias and Casey's relationship, and it shows Tobias at his absolute simpiest. Lol
5- Do you write fanfiction, create fan art, or are you one of those really gifted people who do both?
Oh, how I wish I could draw, but I can't.  So, I’m strictly a writer. I may try giving drawing a go again, but I don't expect much to come of it. lol
6- How long have you been creating for Choices and for any other fandoms?
Choices was the first fandom I ever wrote for, and I started in May of 2021.  So, just over two and a half years. I have written a little bit for some other fandoms since that time, but I primarily write for Choices.
7- What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to create for?
Tough question.  I write for Open Heart, Crimes of Passion, and Wake the Dead, and they are three of my favorite stories. I also loved Desire & Decorum, but I never wrote for it.  Though, I’m planning a re-read, and you never know. 🙂
8- Share your first Choices fanfic or fan art that you posted with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were creating it today?
It was the first chapter of Delaying the Inevitable. I was so green when I started that series that I’m sure there are things I would change, but I’m still very proud of it.  That series will always have a special place in my heart.  I’d like to revisit it one day to “clean it up”, it could use some condensing. But I would never change the storyline.
9- What is your favorite piece of fiction or art that you created?
This is such an unfair question. lol The Delaying the Inevitable Series definitely comes to mind, but I’m also very proud of my Eli Sipes prequel stories, A Mother’s Journal, Coming Up Blank, and The End of the World. But Tobias and Casey are my favorite pairing, and I simply love the world I created for them. And while my headcanon for them is my favorite, I cannot pick just one fic for them, and I'm not going to! lol But, I've also written a bunch of AUs for them, and Friends* is one of my favorites.
10- Do you have a fic/art that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to do well but found it could use a little more love?
Yes, to both! The fandom is much smaller today, but back when we were more active, I learned you couldn't predict how a fic would be received.  There are too many to name, but I will say whenever my smut does well (and quite a few of them have), I’m always astounded. lol
11-  If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?
This is such a difficult question because I believe the best stories incorporate a little of each, and, as a writer, exploring all three helps spur creativity. Also, my absolute favorite is angst with a happy ending, so there is definitely some fluff in there (and I'm never mad at a little smut being thrown in!) But if I were forced to choose, it would probably be angst.  I think that's where I am strongest, and I just love raw emotion. I think that’s where character development really occurs. I have not written as much angst recently, and I miss it.  Perhaps I need a change in 2024.
12 - Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?
There are definitely parts of me in my MCs and OCs, but I do my best to prevent them from becoming self-inserts.  I'm not as cool as any of them, that's for sure! lol That said, I do find inspiration for my fics in real life, so there is bound to be a little crossover. When using real-life inspiration, I try to change details so that the fiction is not a carbon copy of the real-life event. Normally, by the time I'm done, they're hardly recognizable.
13 - What element of writing/art do you struggle with most? Where do you feel you are strongest?
I struggle most with setting a scene. Dialogue is my strong suit, and that just flows for me. It flows so much that sometimes I forget to describe what's going on around the conversation. I think this is particularly easy to do in fanfiction because so much of the "world" has already been provided for us, so I recognize this more when I'm writing original works.
The other thing I struggle with? Brevity. I know I can go on, and on, and on. lol I've gotten much better at this, but there is still room for improvement.
14 - Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?
(Elsa leaves the room, quietly crawls under her desk, and hides…) YES!!! Far, far too many, and no matter how much I share those posts that say, "You don't have to finish! If you're not feeling it, move on!" I don't believe it! lol I really want to make wrapping them up a priority in 2024.  But I also know writing - particularly good writing - cannot be forced.  So, it's a goal, but I'll only do it if I feel it’s right.
15 - If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to see your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you show them first?
It would depend on who asked.  I’m not ashamed of writing fanfic at all, but if I believed the person would be judgemental, I wouldn't be willing to share.  A few of my friends have read select pieces of my fanfic, and I’ve always received positive feedback from them. I wouldn’t be opposed to sharing more.  What I'd share would depend greatly on the person asking.
16 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing or art? Are there any artists that influence you?
There are many published writers that I admire, but I don’t think they've influenced my writing here. Within the fandom, there are many writers who have inspired me in different ways. There is no way I can ever name them all. But I'd like to give a shout-out to some.
@jamespotterthefirst and @bex-la-get were among the first writers I read when I joined Tumblr. I found their passion for both canon and the worlds they created inspiring, especially as Open Heart was nearing its end and all of us addicts needed our fill. Reading their works helped keep the story alive for me and so many others, and it inspired me to try my hand at it as well. To my shock, they were both so encouraging and supportive of me when I arrived, and I'm forever grateful. Back then, I thought they were rockstars - and they are! But now, they're also friends. I wasn't familiar with @alwaysmychoices from the start, but when I came across their work, I was just blown away.  Weekend with Dr. Ramsey will live rent-free in my head forever, and that headcanon about Charlie calling Ethan the night before she marries someone else. (I faint.) Ohhh, the delicious angst! The way she made me feel what Charlie felt was just mind-boggling, and it encouraged me to really dig into my character's emotions and bring them to life in a more meaningful way.
Early on, I read @utterlyinevitable, and the thing that impressed me the most was how Dom was willing to "write stories that “went "go there.”  They tackled issues that others wouldn't touch.  In their world, everything wasn’t perfect, including the characters themselves. I admired that vision and, frankly, bravery, and it definitely encouraged me to write what I wanted to and not what I felt was expected of me.
More recently, @mydemonsdrivealimo inspired me to explore parts of my MCs that I have not delved into in the past.  In particular, Casey's bisexuality. It can be challenging to represent a bisexual character when they are in a straight-presenting relationship, and you risk alienating readers no matter what you do (looking at all readers here.) So it becomes easier to be lazy and ignore it. But that's a disservice to the character as much as it's a disservice to people living similar situations in real life... like I have many times. Through MJ's writing and our conversations, they've helped me become more aware and do a better job in this regard, and I'm not even sure if they know this - it may totally be news to them lol - but I'm eternally grateful. Now, I feel my girl Casey is free, and OMG, how I love our characters playing together in HC now!
Then there are @lilyoffandoms and @storyofmychoices, who bring joy to all that they touch. Who knew when Lily created a little drabble putting our characters in a new world together, it would end up being one of the brightest fandom spots of 2023? Who knew that so much more would stem from that one work? Seriously, it's been one of the highlights of my fandom experience this year, and it's helped me to find inspiration at times when I felt like it was lost. Thank you both - I am so lucky to have you both here!
There are so many more I could mention, but I'd still forget people and feel horrible, so I want to take the chance to thank every writer in the fandom for sharing their gifts with us. Each of you is an inspiration in your own way; each of you can give someone an idea, and you have no idea where that spark will lead. So, never stop sharing!
17-  Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?
Delaying the Inevitable, Friends*, All in the Past, and the WIP What’s Forever For. I also think some of my Ethan x Tobias works would have made for a good sitcom, and how I wish my Tobias x Casey friendship with Bryce x Jensen would be an epic sitcom. The world needs it! lol   (Jensen belongs to @mydemonsdrivealimo.)
19- Do you write original fiction or create non-fandom art?
I do. Mostly shorter stories that will never see the light of day, but also some more substantive works... which will also never see the light of day! lol I wrote a novel-length political thriller some time ago. It would need a ton of work to bring it up to 2024, as the political landscape has changed so much. I also have two original WIPs I've been writing. One is an angsty story about a friendship that's loosely based on a childhood friend I lost to cancer a few years ago.  The other is a polyamorous romance about two best friends who fall for the same person. It's really a beautiful, emotional story. If I like the end result, maybe I'll let it see the light of day... maybe. lol
20-  What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy theater, and I'm lucky enough to live in the best part of the world to partake in that.  I go to a lot of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and local theater productions. I also love going to concerts - they’re like group therapy! Trust me, I got more out of seeing Noah Kahan and Hozier in 2023 than I did from the entirety of sessions with my therapist - and I loved my therapist. lol
Prior to 2020, I did a fair amount of traveling, and I hope to start doing a little more this year.  But I have to admit, since the lockdown, I’ve become more of a homebody, and I like it, so we’ll see how that goes!
I used to be very involved with activism and advocacy for women’s, lgbtq+, and mental health issues. I still am, but in a different capacity than I was in the past. These issues require people fighting for them, and doing so has always been a huge part of who I am, but it can be draining, and burnout is real. I really reached the end of my rope. So, nowadays, I work as a volunteer for a couple local organizations that really mean a lot to me. I'm not involved in grassroots efforts or taking trips to talk to legislators as often, but I'm helping people on a smaller scale, and that still goes a long, long way.
22: BONUS - tell us anything you’d like (if you want to).
As most of you know, I’m one of the mods here at CFWC, so it was a little weird when my the wheel landed on my name.  But, honestly, it’s happened before, and I've just spun again, even though I am eligible. But this time around, I decided to do it. This fandom really means a lot to me, and I wanted to share a little more about myself and my crazy pixelated people.
I'm truly grateful to everyone in the fandom who does their part to make this a place that many, like me, still see as a place they want to be. We're smaller, it's imperfect, it has plenty of problems, but I am choosing to focus on the good... because there is much more of that than there is bad. So, thank you to each of you... and I hope we all have a wonderful 2024! xo
PS... My header... I know Tobias wasn't technically an LI... which was truly criminal. So, that's what fandom is for, fixing what canon effed up. lol My favorite canon LI is Trystan Thorne (COP). I tried adding their picture to the header alongside Tobias, but it looked terrible, so here I am. :)
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I can't wait to highlight more of you in 2024! :)

Say It
(Ethan Ramsey x F!MC) in a Choices Open Heart One Shot
As requested by @hopelessromantic1352 with the quote: "Say it!"
A/N Alright my sweet friend. Here's your last request for Ethan and Chris. Once again, I'm going back to Book 1 for you so Tobias can't interfere LOL.
Masterlist
Tumblr media
"Chris?" Ethan stood there shocked at seeing her at his door. "What are you doing here?"
"Can I come in?" She asked a touch hesitantly.
Without a word, he stepped back and allowed her inside.
He followed her into his kitchen, curious as to why she would bother to come see him of all people. After all, he was the one to disappear on her. After everything that happened between them and with his failure to cure Naveen, he'd hoped to never have to face her again.
How could he possibly stand to see the disappointment he'd caused in those expressive eyes of hers?
"Can I get you something to drink?" He offered, reaching past her for the half empty bottle of scotch he'd been nursing the night before.
"Yes." She snatched it out of his hand then searched his cabinets for a glass.
Ethan's eyebrows lifted. He didn't think he'd ever seen her nervous before. Yet with the way she was acting, he'd swear it was himself putting her on edge.
She poured a good three fingers of scotch in a Baccarat glass tumbler. Without looking his way, she lifted it to her lips and downed half of it.
"Easy there." He said with a great deal of surprise. "You're starting to drink like I do."
She reached for the bottle again after finishing the last dregs in her glass. Glancing at him, she poured another large amount.
"Hold on." He took the glass from her. "What's going on?"
"You honestly don't know?" She asked.
"What?" He drank a few gulps then handed it back to her. "About your upcoming hearing?"
Her nose wrinkled as she leaned against his counter to sip what remained. "Yes."
He sighed, running his hands down his face. "I heard about it when it happened."
Chris's head shot up.
"You knew?" She bit out. "You knew and didn't bother to call and check on me? You arsehole."
Ethan cursed. "What in the hell could I have possibly said to you?"
"Anything!" Chris snapped. "You could have said I'm sorry you're going through this! Or how about asking me if I needed anything? Hell, I'd have preferred a kiss my arse than silence!"
Ethan glared at her. Snatching the glass out of her hands he finished off her drink then refilled it.
"Welcome to a lifetime of disappointment, Chris." He mocked in a toast to her. "Because I'm not the man who can give you what you need."
Chris took the glass and bottle away from him. Before he had a chance to argue, she dumped the remains in his sink then whirled towards him.
"What is wrong with you?" She yelled at him. "My life is crumbling and you stand there as if you don't care!"
She gripped his collar and gave him a violent shake. "Are you the heartless bastard everyone claims?"
"You think I don't care?" He growled, tearing her hands off of him.
Stepping towards her, he pinned her between himself and the counter.
"You certainly act like you don't." She replied defiantly.
"Damnit Chris!" Ethan yelled back. "I begged Harper to let me testify in your hearing. I argued with her for over an hour when she refused."
She shoved him away from her. "I don't believe you."
Ethan released a string of expletives over her stubbornness and that quick temper she possessed.
"She knew I shouldn't testify. As soon as I got up there, everyone would see why I was fighting so hard for you, which is why I can't."
Chris's chest rose and fell with each furious breath. Her cheeks were flushed as her eyes darted over him.
"Everyone would see what?" She demanded.
"You know damn well what they would see." He snapped.
"No. I don't." She hissed, stepping forward once again. "Be a man and say it!"
When he remained silent, she gripped his shirt once more. Before she could stop herself, the words she'd held back for so long came rushing out.
"Say it, Ethan! Say you don't want me! Say that I mean nothing to you!" She ordered, voice cracking with emotion. "Say that you don't think about Miami every single night like I do!"
Her eyes drifted down his body.
"Say that you want me to walk away. Forget everything between us. Find someone new."
She lifted her eyes back to his.
"Say you want me to touch and kiss someone else the way I only touched and kissed you."
She gave him a hard shake.
"Say it so I can move on!"
He grabbed her, mouth slamming down on hers, and backed her against the counter once again.
Her hands slid up his chest, arms winding around his neck as he lifted her up onto the granite surface. She pulled him closer, locking her legs around him as the anger fueled kiss went on.
"I'll never say it." He swore against her lips.
His once cold blue eyes burned with desire. Hope, one that she'd never let die, began to flicker a little more strongly with his harshly spoken words.
"And you know why I won't."
"Then tell me you want me." She pleaded, needing him to finally admit it.
He softly groaned as he kissed her once more. She moved restlessly against him. The intensity of his next kiss made her yearn for what was always out of reach when it concerned him.
"God, I want you, Chris." He said a touch breathlessly. "I've always wanted you."
She cupped his heavily stubbled cheek and brushed the corner of his unforgiving lips with her thumb. A sad smile formed the longer she looked at him.
"Why do you still fight it?" She asked.
"Us?" He shrugged, turning to kiss her palm. "I have no idea."
"Then stop." She pressed her lips to his for a tender kiss then slowly moved them down his throat. "Stop for me."
His head dropped back, eyes closed with the feel of each caress. His hands slid into her silky red hair as she continued the achingly sweet touches his heart had yearned for so long.
"Chris." He moaned under her hands. "I think we should--"
"Unless your next words are to tell me to get into your bedroom, I don't want to hear it." She snapped.
A harsh laugh slipped from his lips. He loved how even that temper of hers could not only set him in his place but also make him want her even more.
"Get in there." He ordered, his tone laced heavy with desire.
Chris smiled through another kiss before sliding off the counter. As she walked into his room, she dropped one piece of clothing after another like a trail of bread crumbs so he'd be sure to follow.
Ethan did so without any hesitation whatsoever, ripping his own clothes off to join hers, eyes never leaving her body.
After all this time fighting against it, he was finally giving in to the inevitability of them.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Landry got the testing kit and the address for Naveen from the hospital and took Casey to Naveen’s residence. They left the city and found themselves at a lake house. Landry was surprised that he lived so far away from the hospital. Casey had also assumed that Naveen lived close by too. They made their way up the driveway and Casey spotted a figure on the small jetty.
“Dr Banerji” Casey calls out several times. Naveeen is startled but was pleasantly surprised to see her. Landry, with the testing equipment in tow, struggled to keep up.
“Lovely to see you, Casey and we are out of the hospital, please call me Naveen.”
Casey was relieved to see Naveen alive and she told him that she thinks she has figured out what is wrong with him. Naveen listens to the reasoning and is impressed with Casey, even more than what he already was. He agreed to the testing and they found that the infection was A Baunamii and they found out which bacteria phage was causing the other issues. The issue was that the A Baunamii is a superbug which Naveen chuckled at. “It seems fitting that the hospital would kill me.”
Casey thought but what if we tip the scales in favour of the bacteriophage?
Landry was beside himself.
“W-w-what? That would kill him!” Exclaims Landry,
“Phage therapy…” began Casey
“We do not know about that and if we get the math wrong?”
Naveen coughed to gain both Casey’s and Landry’s attention. “We all know someone who is an expert..”
Casey could not grab the keys quick enough. I will return, says Casey.
She makes her way to Ethan’s building. Luck was on her side, getting a car park right out front. She lets herself into the building. She makes her way to his apartment. Ethan is still in bed which is surprising to her but then she remembers the night before. She straddles him and he wakes up. He is dazed, then confused, especially when Casey tells him she figured it out. She explains how she got to her conclusions. He feels like an idiot for not thinking about that possibility and then he is proud of her, for doing what he failed to do in not giving up. He then tries to get up but the alcohol consumption from the day before has caught up with him. Casey said she will make him her hangover cure. She goes to the kitchen, gets the juice, the paprika and the ghost pepper and blends it up. It smells interesting as ever and she gives it to Ethan. He pours a small glass for Casey and she drinks it. Ethan is cured and then he goes to get dressed. Casey kisses him.
“What was that for?”
“Luck”
“Well I am going to need more luck” says Ethan before he kisses her again. She makes him a coffee and then they head to Harvard to make the phage therapy. They do this successfully. They make their way to Naveen’s lake house. Ethan remembers Casey mentioned a Dr Olsen helping her so he asks who he is.
“He was in our group, but not anymore.”
“What happened?”
“Since Miami I have had charts go missing, had medications changed on patients, thankfully no harm was done but there were a few instances where it could have been very different. There was also a period where the nursing staff were rude to me. The final straw was the anonymous tip off to the Martinez Family about Teresa.” Casey took a breath. “ I had no idea who was working against me so much and working a case with Aurora Emery helped me realize that the enemy had to come from within and I confronted him and he did not even deny it.”
Ethan’s hands gripped the steering wheel as Casey told him all that had been happening.
“And you are trusting this son of a bitch?” He said through gritted teeth.
“We had little choice, Jackie, Elijah and Sienna have been watched like hawks since the investigation. We needed testing equipment and we needed to get Naveen’s address. Believe me I wish it was different.”
“Is Naveen in danger?”
“No, Naveen was adamant about wanting to receive the phage therapy.”
Ethan nods and starts to prepare to see Naveen again. He had seen him at a distance since he walked out of the hospital that day but had not spoken to him since. He now felt extra horrible about having given up on Naveen, especially when Casey clearly had not.
“He will understand Ethan, hell if it was not for me helping Landry pack his stuff I would not have had the thought that led to a treatment.”
She quickly squeezed his hand before letting go. They arrived at the lake house. They make their way into the house. Both are relieved to find Naveen still alive, telling Landry about his career.
Ethan apologizes to Naveen for giving up on him.
“Nonsense my dear boy, I know you gave your all.”
Naveen’s eyes go to the cooler that Ethan is carrying.
“Is that the therapy.”
“Yes.” Said Ethan, “It was done in a hurry…”
“I am sure you got everything right my boy.”
Ethan nods and he administers the phage therapy. Naveen slowly drifts into unconsciousness. Landry and Casey looked concerned but Ethan assures them that what is happening is normal. They go to pack up the equipment.
“Dr Olsen, Can I have a word with you alone?” Says Ethan as he stands up. Landry does not know what to think, alone with his medical hero.
Ethan cut right to the chase.
“The sabotage, stealing of Dr Valentine’s files, the smear campaign with the nursing staff, why did you do it?”
Landry is flabbergasted.
“What? How did you know about that?”
“That is none of your concern but what should be of concern is how those actions could have harmed the people that trust us with their care.”
“Casey did not deserve top spot, she had lackluster cases and was lucky, that and she was sleeping with you to gain favour.”
Ethan sees red.
“Dr Valentine had plenty of difficult cases. Some were allocated by me and others from other residents and attendings who saw that she had it in her to work those cases.”
“What so you are going to flat out deny that you were fucking her?”
“The work that Casey did with me in the treatment of the very man in the bedroom was kept separate and out of the rankings.”
“You did not answer my question.”
“My private life is none of your goddamn concern. If I was you I would be more concerned about where you will work next year. The acts of sabotage alone would make anyone question if you would be a good fit, not to mention the feedback I have on you, well let’s just say you will be lucky to get a position.”
Landry stood there stunned.
“What someone who potentially kills a woman could potentially get away with it and me, who told the family and also who works so god damn hard and not recognised fairly for it is exiled?”
“That sense of entitlement right there. That arrogance, the disregard for people’s well being, that is why you have received the feedback you have received. I know all about Mrs Martinez, she resented being in the hospital, she loved the staff who looked after her but she resented her existence. Many of us wished we could have done more…”
Landry interjected, “so you are ok with the fact she stole a drug and killed a woman?”
“Teresa knew the risk, she still said yes of her own volition. Yes she stole the drug but she was denied it through proper channels. If corporate greed was not a factor in the cure being disregarded then this would not have happened”
Landry was stunned. To him, medicine was black and white but he could not believe that the very man he idolized and tried to be like worked in the grey areas.
“B-b-but what Casey did was wrong…” stuttered Landry.
“Welcome to the real world, there is doing wrong for the right reason and what you did, doing right for the wrong reason. Our patients expect us to do what is best for them, for some it is simple but others not so much. What you have failed to grasp is that medical care is not always black and white. Casey understands this and that is why she is on top and that is why you keep progressively slipping. You are not a good fit for Edenbrook. What you did, if it got out it was you would make you difficult to trust and our staff and patients do not deserve that. To be honest I think you have no place in medicine and the only reason I am not physically harming you for what you did to Dr Valentine right now is because you helped her research a case that I could not solve. I want you gone from Edenbrook but your reference will not be the best because the overwhelming feedback about you is bad.” Said Ethan. He takes his leave to the bedroom while Landry is left standing there in stunned silence.
Ethan makes it to the room and Casey is still there. She squeezes Ethan’s hand.
“Do you want me there tomorrow, for the hearing?” He asks quietly, still frustrated that he would be unable to stand up there and testify for her.
“Only if you want too, it would be nice knowing I had someone else in my corner in the audience.”
Ethan smiles ruefully. “Well you better head off and prepare rookie.”
Casey squeezes his hand again, “I hope he pulls through.”
The silence on the car ride back is deafening. Landry contemplating where to from here and Casey hoping they were not too late and also about her career.
As a consequence she was wound tight. A part of her wishes she stayed a bit longer with Ethan, even though he would have been keeping an eagle eye on Naveen, she was certain that Ethan would have found a way to relieve some of her stress. Instead she had to resort to other methods to take the edge off, it helped but it was not the real thing and if she was being honest, nothing would come close.
Meanwhile, back at the lakehouse, Ethan received an email. It was from Dr Santiago, the head of the WHO team working in Brazil. He was accepted and was due to fly out in 10 days. Ethan was excited but there was a pit in his stomach. Two months away from Casey. He knew that he was deluding himself into thinking there were no feelings, just an arrangement but he was wrong, there were feelings, he was not sure what they meant but he was eager to explore them. He took some heart in that she was already aware that this was a possibility though, it still did not make it easier however.
Naveen made it through the night and Ethan was startled that there was a knock at the door. He was even more surprised to see Dr Olsen.
“I know you said that I have no place but I presume you need a break from watching over Dr Banerji. I would like to take over.”
Ethan gestures for him to enter. Ethan goes through what has been happening with Naveen. Ethan took Naveen’s car and drove back to Boston. He had a quick shower and got dressed and made his way to Edenbrook to witness what he hoped would not be a sham of an ethics hearing. He saw Casey and marveled at the cut of her shirt.
“Even though I can not testify for you, all the best of luck” he said, he then stood closer and whispered “I wish I could kiss you right now.”
Casey nodded and headed in. She sat down at the podium and Declan Nash sat behind her, trying to
throw her off. Casey kept her composure and answered all the questions with ease. Ethan felt she chose her patients well also. Then he received a message. He ducked out and was greeted by Louis Martinez.
“Am I too late?”
“No,” says Ethan, “the hearing is still going.”
Louis nods and makes his way into the auditorium. He makes his way down to where Casey is.
“Are you the doctor who gave my mother the drug?”
“Yes it was me…” Casey wanted to continue but Luis hugged her tightly.
“Thank you. We were angry at first, we were apprehensive about her traveling but I received a photo of her standing outside Sacre Du Couer and the smile… I had not seen that smile since I was a boy and I realized that Teresa would not want this. As much as she resented being here, she saw you as her adoptive family. Thank you for making her dreams a reality and the law suit is dropped.”
Ethan starts to feel quietly confident. The doctors that Casey had recruited spoke on her behalf. Harper went to call for a vote but there was one more surprise that Ethan had not even seen coming. The door opens and in with a walking stick enters Naveen.
Everyone in the auditorium is shocked to see him.
“Glad to see that my spot is there. And be quiet Dr Cyrus, it is not filled so therefore I will take the spot as it is still technically mine. Now, yes I quit but in reality I was quite literally dying. This young lady here, knew of my predicament but had a thought which lead to a diagnosis and treatment. Thanks to Dr Valentine and Dr Ramsey, I am still here. This young lady did not give up, from what I understand and know of her has always thought for what is right and for getting the best outcomes for our patients so since I vote is called for, I vote that we retain Dr Valentine with full privileges. One by one the panel votes. Unanimous in keeping Casey on. Casey was gracious in thanking the panel. Ethan was in shock but then was proud. He saw the fruits of what he had taught her about making a path and never giving up. He finally saw Naveen talking to Harper.
“Don’t worry Ethan, there will be no consequences for you treating Naveen in secret, at his request.”
Ethan nodded before saying, “About my exit paperwork Harper?”
“Since it has not been started it will be very easy to reinstate you, if that is what you would like.”
“I would but I fly out in 10 days to Brazil for two months to work with the pandemic efforts in the Amazon.” Said Ethan.
“We can sort that out,” said Harper. “Now let’s get the ball rolling.”
Finally Ethan makes his way to Donahue’s. He is greeted by Casey and they suggest going back to her place for a private celebration. They catch a cab to her place. Ethan says he can not stay but after several rounds he can not bring himself to leave. They had discussed that he would be working at Edenbrook but with no word on the competition he could not even begin that discussion. After a few hours sleep Casey stirs in his arms.
“I thought you could not stay?” She says groggily.
“I could not bring myself to leave.”
Casey kisses him softly. He runs a hand down the curve of her waist, hoping for another round before he leaves.
“I want too, and my housemates know but you do need to get home.”
Ethan lets out a small groan of frustration. He begrudgingly gets dressed and Casey and Ethan walk out. Elijah and Sienna are in the kitchen. Both of them greet Dr Ramsey. He greeted them back and took his leave.
A few hours later Ethan and Casey’s paths cross. She welcomed him back and they made their way to the atrium for morning announcements. Harper stood with Naveen. Harper announced that she was stepping down as chief of medicine and she instilled Naveen as the new chief. Naveen then spoke.
“It is a great honour to be named Chief. My first act as Chief is to end the competition and award the Junior Fellow on the Diagnostics Team to Dr Casey Valentine. If not for her I would not be alive today.”
Ethan was proud of Casey, saving Naveen aside he knew she worked hard, cared, asked the questions that needed asking and as such deserved to be number one but then he was furious. Her being on the team meant that she was his subordinate and he knew a relationship of any type would tarnish the work she did to get there. He could see that Casey was just as shocked as he was.
“What do we do now?”
“I do not know.” He said, not wanting to start a conversation he did not want to have.
Casey went about her work in a daze. She had never anticipated Naveen coming back as chief and awarding the position. She certainly did not want to take for granted that she would have won the ethics trial. She knew that they had been an arrangement but she got the the distinct impression that Ethan wanted more and if Casey was being honest, so did she. She was shaken from her daze by an alert on her phone. It was a message from Ethan asking her to come over after her shift. She said yes.
End of shift came and she made the familiar journey to Ethan’s apartment. She made her way up to the apartment and they had dinner together.
“So this morning was unexpected,” said Casey hesitantly, “I knew you had your job back but I had not anticipated the rest.”
“I knew there was a chance the competition would end, I think that Naveen would be chief. To be honest I thought he would come back as team leader and be an attending…”
“There is going to be no us, is there?”
Ethan nods. He then takes a deep breath,
“With the rumours of you and me, it would tarnish you. I know you earnt that spot fair and square, and saving Naveen would have been hard to top, Ethics hearing aside and I understand Naveen wanting to reward you…”
“An out in the open relationship would give them plenty to target me with…”
“I hate how misogynistic the medical profession can be, I would have some blow back but nowhere near the amount you would.”
“How are we going to go back to a pre Miami footing?”
“Whilst keeping an eye on Naveen after the phage therapy I received an email stating that I was accepted to go down to Brazil. I did state this to Harper when I was offered my job back and I will still be going down. The time apart will hurt but I feel that will help us.”
“I know deep down we should not but do we want to keep the arrangement going until you leave?”
Ethan walks towards her and kisses her hungrily.
“Thank God you want to as well” he whispers in her ear as she picks her up and takes her on the kitchen bench. It was quick and intense. They cleaned up their dishes and continued their evening in the bath and eventually the bed. A majority of those nights Casey spent at Ethan’s, soaking up the last of an arrangement that both wished could be more. The day came for Ethan to leave. It was bittersweet. It was the end of the arrangement but the work Ethan would be doing is something he loved doing and Casey was eager to start her fellowship. She knew it would be hard being apart but she knew they needed it to get back onto a professional mentor/mentee footing. Ethan had already warned her that keeping in touch would be difficult so she knew any contact would be difficult. They said goodbye at the departure lounge and Casey left. She made her way to the hospital and commenced her shift while Ethan boarded a plane, a tumult of emotion.

the best mistake he never had [drake x Camille AU] [part three]
Tumblr media
Drake was awake at dawn to start working the ranch. He liked being up at this time when the world felt like it was empty and only he existed.
He worked as the sun came up. Working on the ranch, he felt like he had purpose. He had something that was important.
Too bad he didn't feel this way when he was younger.
At 11am, he took his horse Lone Star out of the stable so he could brush her coat and mane then let her run wild around the field.
She was a beautiful chestnut brown mare who had been Drake's horse for years.
Looking after Lone Star gave him purpose. A reminder that there was something in his life that belonged to him and him alone.
*************
‘Mommy, can I go out and ride my bike?’ Lily asked over breakfast.
Gisele had bought a bicycle for Lily in case she ever visited Texas and wanted something to feel like hers. The bike was pink with multicoloured tassels hanging from the handlebars and a white plastic basket sitting on top of it. It was the perfect Lily bike.
‘Of course you can,’ Camille said. ‘But only around this road, any further and you'll get lost.’
Lily grinned and quickly ate up her cereal, desperate to get outside.
She was about to fly out the door when Camille pulled her back. ‘Hey, not so fast Speedy Gonzalez!’ she teased. ‘Don’t forget your helmet.’
Camille passed Lily her pink glittery helmet. Lily clamped it onto her head and kissed her mom quickly on the cheek.
‘Byeeee!’ she crowed, clambering onto the bike so she could explore.
**************
As Drake spoke to Lone Star quietly, he heard footsteps behind him and a gasp.
Turning, he jumped when he saw it was Lily standing on the dirt road behind him. She was holding onto a pink bicycle with tassels on the handle bars but her eyes were fixed on Lone Star in wonder.
Drake cleared his throat, unsure of how to act. ‘Uhhh..’
‘Is that your horse?’ Lily asked, her eyes wide.
‘Yeah she is..’ Drake answered, feeling his heart hammering inside his chest.
This was his daughter.
He couldn't get his head around this fact. He had a daughter, a little girl who was alive and breathing in this world. Part of him.
And yet she wasn't his.
Because of his stupid decision five years ago. He couldn't help but feel bitterness at his past self. The shame that constantly lived in the pit of his stomach whenever he thought of Lily and Camille.
Looking at her, he could see that she was pure Camille. The same brown eyes. The pixie nose. The upturned mouth that looked like she was smiling, even when she wasn't.
‘Do you like animals?’ he finally asked, stumbling on his words.
Lily nodded enthusiastically. ‘I love animals!’ she said. ‘I want to be a vet when I grow up. I have a pet frog called Steve though mommy says we can't have proper pets because of the apartment we live in. I keep him in a box in my room.’
She spoke quickly, as if she needed to get to the next sentence or she would disappear. She had this frenetic, gorgeous energy about her.
Drake smiled softly. ‘How does your mommy feel about Steve?’
Lily scuffed her shoe on the dirt road. ‘She thinks he's slimy.’
Drake laughed and nodded his head. ‘Frogs usually are slimy, yes.’
Lily giggled and looked up at him, suddenly shy. Her eyes darted to Lone Star.
Drake looked back at the horse then back to Lily. ‘You wanna brush her mane?’
Lily blinked. ‘Really?’
Drake held out the brush. ‘Sure. She likes being groomed.’
Lily grinned and took the brush out of Drake's hand. She stepped hestitantly, towards Lone Star who loomed tall above her.
‘She’s very friendly,’ Drake said quietly. ‘Promise.’
Lily bit her lip nervously then reached out to brush part of Lone Star’s mane. The horse wickered and looked down at Lily, waiting patiently for her to continue.
Encouraged, Lily gently took a handful of Lone Star's mane and slowly brushed the hair, careful not to tug. She treated Lone Star’s mane like fine china.
‘She likes you,’ Drake said gently. ‘You’re doing great.’
Lily beamed and continued to brush Lone Star’s mane.
‘What’s your name?’ she asked Drake.
‘My name’s Drake.’ He paused for a moment. He obviously knew the answer to his next question but he had to keep up this pretence. ‘What’s your name?’
‘Lily.’
‘That’s a pretty name.’
‘Thank you. It's my mommy's favourite flower.’
Drake watched Lily, unable to take his eyes off her. How could this girl be his daughter?
‘Lone Star,’ Lily said, addressing the horse. ‘I have a joke for you. Well, the start of a joke. So my grandma lives down the road there. Do you think we could be… neighhhh-bours?’
Drake let out a good-natured groan. Lily let out a giggle and then turned to Drake. ‘Funny right?!’
She smirked.
Drake's heart nearly stopped.
Oh fuck, she really is my daughter.
*******************
Camille glanced at the clock. Lily had been out cycling for forty five minutes and Camille was getting worried.
She was an overprotective parent, yes she knew that. But could you blame her? It was only her and Lily, their little team of two. Lily was Camille's entire life.
Camille checked on Gisele who was more tired today. She was snuggled up in bed with her newspaper and a cup of coffee, content to spend the day here and not exert herself.
‘Grandma, I'm just going out to see if I can find Lily,’ Camille told her.
‘Don’t worry too much, Mon petit chou,’ Gisele chided her. ‘You’ll get early wrinkles.’
Camille rolled her eyes at her grandma's priorities and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving.
Camille left the house and looked around the road until her eyes caught three figures near the top of the hill. As she started to walk towards them, she realised it was Drake, a horse and Lily.
*********************
‘Lily!’
Lily and Drake jumped at the sound of Camille's shout. Drake swallowed when he saw the look of thunder on Camille's face. She looked ready to rip him a new one.
‘Hi mommy!’ Lily called. ‘This is Lone Star! And her owner is Drake!’
Camille stormed up the road and grabbed Lily's hand, pulling her away from Lone Star. Lily dropped the brush and stared up at her mother with wide eyes.
‘I told you not to talk to strangers!’ Camille said, her voice high and trembling.
Drake took a step back. A stranger. She was right, he was a stranger to Lily, but it still stung.
‘I’m sorry mommy. I just wanted to meet Lone Star…’ Lily trailed off and cast her eyes down at the ground. Drake's heart broke for her.
‘I know you love animals but you don't know Drake- I mean, this man- as he is a stranger to you. Do you talk to strangers back home?’
‘No…’
‘The same applies here.’
Drake opened his mouth to say something, anything to help Lily, but one thunderous look from Camille in his direction made him change his mind.
‘Lily, go back to grandma's,’ Camille sighed. ‘She’d like her Lily cuddles.’
Lily nodded mutely and gave Lone Star a weak wave. She looked up at Drake and gave him a nod before mounting her bicycle.
Drake and Camille watched Lily cycle down the road until she reached Gisele's house. As soon as she was inside, Drake broke the silence.
‘Camille, I'm sorry.’
She turned to face him. Wrapping her arms around herself, she closed her eyes and swallowed. ‘I rarely shout at her,’ she told him. ‘Just know that I'm not a bad mom who shouts at her kid all the time. I don't do that.’
Drake raised his hands. ‘Hey, no judgement here.’
Camille pressed her fingers on either side of her nose and exhaled. ‘I’ve been nervous to come here in case we bumped into you. I'd hoped we wouldn't see you because seeing you with my daughter is probably the worst thing I can think of. I know that sounds dramatic but you were the one who chose not to have her in your life and now here you are, talking to her and letting her groom your horse!’
Drake looked away, his jaw tense. He knew Camille was right. But he hadn't ASKED Lily to talk to him. He hadn't sought her out.
‘What was I supposed to do, Camille? Ignore her? I couldn't win in this situation!’
Camille swallowed. She hated to admit it but he was right, he couldn't have just ignored Lily.
Drake watched her for a long moment, studying her.
She looked so stressed. He hated that he brought out this side of her. The Camille he had known years ago had been carefree.
But that had been years ago. She was a mom now. She had responsibilities.
‘You know..’ he said quietly, ‘this is not just any horse.’
Camille blinked. ‘What?’
Drake gestured to Lone Star. ‘She’s gonna be offended that you just referred to her as a horse. She has a name. You know it.’
He smiled to show he wasn't being serious.
Camille’s eyes widened. ‘Lone Star?’
Lone Star wickered in response.
Camille couldn't help it. She stepped forward with a gasp and reached out to stroke Lone Star’s neck. ‘Oh my gosh, girl, you're still around..’
Drake shuffled on his feet and watched Camille coo over Lone Star. Watching her with Lone Star brought it all back.
They had never been together, not properly.
Drake didn't want to admit it but he had always harboured a crush on Camille. It was hard not to- she had been his neighbour for years and she was gorgeous. She was also so incredibly unique to everyone else he knew.
Most people tended to judge Drake rather than spend time getting to know him. He wasn't the most confident of people and he tended to keep to himself. A wall was built around him which made it hard for people to scale.
He was sarcastic, had no tolerance for bullshit and avoided anyone he deemed to be an asshole. That happened to be most people.
But Camille was different. She had always made an effort with him when they grew up. She would invite him to hang out at her grandma's but Drake always declined.
Nerves. He got nervous around her too much.
She had met Lone Star when they were teenagers and like Lily, had wanted to get to know the horse.
Drake let her feed Lone Star an apple which meant Lone Star was now Camille's friend for life.
While Camille had chatted away about how beautiful Lone Star was and asked Drake questions about the ranch, Drake had simply watched her mutely, unable to form sentences.
Camille was used to him being like this. She hadn't been offended or weirded out by him. She simply just put it down to Drake not being much of a talker.
They had known each other for years, always at a safe distance. Until one night five years ago when that distance closed.
Camille stepped away from Lone Star and regarded Drake seriously.
‘I know that I'm coming across like a bitch,’ she said, ‘but I have to look out for my daughter. She doesn't know about you and I think if she found out, she would only be confused. Lily.. she wears her heart on her sleeve. I can't have her getting attached to you when you have no intention of being in her life.’
Drake felt a pang in his chest. ‘I’m sorry..’ he said quietly.
Camille shrugged. ‘You made your choice. I can't judge you for it as everyone is different. But please respect my choice in that I don't want her getting to know you. She's my baby and I won't have her getting hurt.’
She gave Drake a curt nod and stepped back from him, maintaining distance.
‘I’ll stay away from her,’ Drake told her, his voice cracking. ‘I get where you're coming from.’
Camille smiled sadly. ‘This is the way it has to be.’
