I love High Potential. Really do. But am I the only one who just cannot see Morgan and her ex-husband, Ludo, as a couple?
I love that they're portraying a healthy relationship between exes - and of course the "story" is they were better off as friends - but I cannot imagine them doing the deed and procreating once, never mind twice. Just can't see it.

Ooph. That was rough, Mal. Rough, but beautifully written, and so well-paced. You know I love having my heart ripped out of my chest - for some reason - so this was divine.
I'm going to get my weighted blankie now....
If I Had My Chance Again
Premise: After the events of Miami, there was no coming back to what could’ve been.
Fandom: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Angst Words: 1,410
A/N: I've been too busy to write these last couple of weeks, but I so missed my babies. This is not based on my hc of their relationship. More of a "what if..."
Tumblr media
Kissing him had been heaven. Loving him was hell.
“We… can’t. We can’t go further. We’ve already crossed a line.” … “I shouldn’t have let this happen. And it can’t happen again.”
Cassie Valentine knew Ethan was right. As an intern, she couldn’t get involved with an attending and expect her reputation to survive. For the next three years, she’d be known as Dr. Ramsey’s acolyte—or worse.
The real world wasn’t always kind to women, and medicine was still an old boys’ club. A small one at that. Gossip would follow her everywhere, and her accomplishments would never truly be hers.
They could wait until her residency was over. They’d be equals then. But…
Did Ethan even want that? He’d already broken with his principles enough to give in to temptation tonight. But she knew him well enough now to know he saw the world in black and white, with very few shades of gray.
And she loved colors. They were fundamentally opposites.
Was there enough give in him to open himself to her when all the obstacles were gone?
And was it fair for her to put her life on hold for a man who hadn’t given her any indication that he might hope for more?
Cassie sighed deeply. Did she want Ethan the man—or Dr. Ramsey the mentor?
Because if she could only have one, she knew which she’d choose. And it was something she’d have to live with.
So… could she?
Or would she come to regret it?
Two and a half years later…
Ethan Ramsey knew that lurking in the shadows at the residency graduation party, staring longingly at his almost-former resident, wasn’t exactly becoming of a world-renowned diagnostician. But he wasn’t in the mood for small talk—or anything else.
Despite the initial awkwardness after their kiss in Miami, they had quickly reverted to a strictly collegial, attending-intern relationship once they returned to Boston.
Still, in the darkest hours of the night, Ethan sometimes wondered: if he had the chance to go back to that moonlit night in Miami, would he do things differently? Would there be an us?
It was a moot point. She’d entered a new relationship sometime during her intern year, and whatever had passed between them had become ancient history.
He’d gotten what he asked for: the chance to shape her into the kind of physician he knew she could become.
She’d been there for him when things fell apart with his mother. And over the last two years, their relationship had deepened—into something resembling true friendship, not just professional respect.
So he held himself back. For years, he worked side by side with the woman who, over time, came to complement him in ways he never could have imagined.
And now, he had lost any chance to make her his.
He turned when he heard her laugh.
He’d recognize it anywhere—in the dark, in a crowded room, in his soul.
Ethan’s expression tightened at the sight of Cassie leaning against her boyfriend, her head thrown back, one hand resting intimately on the other man’s arm.
He’d met Nate Hanson a few times. Couldn’t find fault in him. A MedTech hotshot CEO, always on the road, but when Cassie needed him, he showed up. No matter what.
Ethan didn’t believe in long-distance relationships. Cassie had proven him wrong. Almost three years later, the couple was still together.
And that’s why there could be no us, Ethan thought grimly, turning away before the scene cut deeper.
He checked his watch. Might as well finish up some work before heading home.
Work had always been his panacea in moments of disquiet. Tonight, he needed it more than anything.
A short while later, Ethan looked up at the swoosh of the glass doors to the diagnostics office.
Removing his glasses, he smiled as Cassie slid into the visitor’s chair across from him, handing over a paper plate with a slice of chocolate cake and a plastic fork.
“I thought I’d find you here,” she said. “I didn’t see you downstairs.”
“I showed my face earlier—just enough to satisfy Naveen,” Ethan shrugged. “You know I’m not one for meaningless socializing.”
Cassie rolled her eyes, a teasing smile hovering on her lips. “I know.”
They stared at each other across the desk, the silence stretching like a taut string. Ethan was the first to look away.
“I’m proud of you, Cassie,” he said gruffly, clearing the tightness from his throat. “You really made your mark. I know that one day, you’ll surpass me completely.”
Her eyes softened. “Thank you for believing in me, Ethan. You know I chose Edenbrook because I wanted to learn from you—even if it felt like a long shot that I’d get to work directly with you. But your mentorship and guidance, from day one, are the reason I’m the doctor I am today.”
“It’s been my honor,” Ethan said. “And I hope you know that you have a spot on the diagnostics team for as long as you want it.”
He paused, thinking of the phone call from a few weeks ago. “Though I suspect you won’t be taking it.”
Laughing, Cassie threw up her hands. “What are you, psychic?”
Ethan smirked, steepling his fingers as he leaned back in his chair. “As I keep reminding you, Valentine, I’m a master of observation. But in this case, I got a call from Dr. Danbury at Hopkins about the open position on his diagnostics team.”
“I gave you a glowing recommendation, of course. The job is yours if you want it,” he added softly.
“I do,” she said, reaching into her jacket pocket. “Oh, hell—you might as well know.”
“Nate proposed last night. And I said yes.” She slid a diamond ring onto her left hand and held it up for him to see.
“My family knows, but not my friends. Not yet. But it feels fitting that you’re the first non-family member to hear the news,” she said, practically vibrating with giddiness.
Ethan stared at the rock adorning her finger, his heart sinking.
He had lost her. For good.
He’d held out hope—a small, stubborn one—that they’d continue as colleagues. Maybe, just maybe, the strain of a long-distance relationship would make the couple reevaluate things.
But he’d been sorely mistaken.
“Congratulations, Cassie,” Ethan said, swallowing the lump in his throat and forcing a smile.
“As you know, Nate’s company is based in Baltimore. We talked about what would happen after residency and felt ready to move forward.
“So when the opportunity came up at Johns Hopkins, I had to seriously consider it. Plus, I want to live closer to my family,” she said.
“Well, you’ll be missed here,” he said. “But I understand. And, I respect your decision. You’ll do amazing things. I have no doubt.”
Cassie nodded her thanks.
“I’ll be texting you often, especially when I’m stuck and need advice. So you’d better text back,” she warned, leveling him with a steely look. “Because I’m leaving Edenbrook, Ethan—not you. You’ll always be my mentor. Just like Naveen is yours.”
Before he could respond, her phone buzzed. She checked the screen. “Oops. Nate’s waiting for me. I gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow?”
Ethan watched her leave, not ready for any of this to end.
He wanted to call her back. Ask if she still thought about that kiss in Miami. If she ever wondered what could’ve been, if only they had let themselves forget who they were.
But it was too late for what ifs.
Instead, he called out—somewhat impulsively, “Take the morning off.”
Cassie whirled around, eyes narrowing. “Okay, who are you? Even if the hospital were closing down tomorrow, you’d still expect me in the office early—if not on time.”
This time, it was Ethan’s turn to roll his eyes. “You know what they say about looking a gift horse in the mouth, Valentine. Take it. Don’t argue.”
“Yes, Dr. Ramsey,” she replied with a mock salute and a chuckle.
And then he was alone.
The quiet settled thick and heavy around him as she disappeared from view. Words rose unbidden, hovering at the edge of his lips:
Come back. Turn around. Be mine.
He’d had his chance—and he’d chosen differently. If he had the chance again…
Well, he was a realist.
They were exactly who they were. And that would have to be enough.

What was it about galas that turned doctors into horny toads?
At any other function, Cassie Valentine would’ve been annoyed at a loose garter. Tonight, she was grateful for the excuse it gave her to slip away.
The ladies’ room was on the far side of the ballroom, which meant dodging any number of intoxicated doctors attending the black-tie event she was hosting as part of the National Medical Symposium’s festivities.
Tonight was a labor of love—her first time organizing a major charity gala on behalf of the Valentine Foundation.
The family business might be hotels, but the foundation focused on humanitarian work across several sectors. When she’d pitched healthcare as a cause worth championing, her parents and the board had trusted her.
The special humanitarian award for Dr. Banerji was the result of months of planning, negotiation and tireless work.
Tonight had to go smoothly. Failure wasn’t an option.
She spotted the French doors leading to the moonlit terrace and made a hasty beeline before someone else managed to corner her. The spring evening was chilly, and she doubted anyone else would be outside.
Cassie supposed it was old-fashioned of her to wear a garter with her stockings, but there was something so sensual about that little band of lace around her thigh. Of course, she was the only one who knew it was there.
Her last relationship had fizzled before it had truly begun.
Still, she dressed for herself—always had, always would. But a part of her, the romantic who’d grown up on fairytales and handsome princes on white horses, wished she had someone who would see the garter for what it was: an invitation to make her his.
Leaning lightly against the wall, just out of sight of the partygoers, Cassie hiked up the skirt of her ballgown. The fabric fell away from the thigh-high slit, revealing a silk stocking that had slipped down to her knee.
She quickly loosened the garter to adjust the top of the stocking, smoothing the silk with practiced fingers before fastening it again.
Suddenly, the doors to the terrace swung open. A tall man in an impeccably tailored suit stepped out.
Cassie froze, caught mid-adjustment. Her breath hitched as she watched him.
He didn’t seem to notice her. Instead, he let out a long sigh, rolled his shoulders, and braced his hands against the balustrade.
Tilting his head back, he stared at the inky sky above, his posture slowly easing as if whatever burden he’d been carrying was finally letting go.
There was something mesmerizing about him. The way the lamplight cast shifting shadows across his face. The tousled waves of dark hair, as if a lover had just run their fingers through them.
It felt voyeuristic, but she couldn’t help noticing the way the cut of his pants hugged his hips, or how his jacket skimmed the strong lines of his frame.
If he was a doctor, he certainly didn’t look like any of the ones she’d met tonight. And she wouldn’t be in a hurry to escape his company.
She must’ve made a sound, because his head snapped up—narrow-eyed and sharp, his gaze pinned her where she stood. Skirt hiked, fingers tangled in lacy ribbons, one nearly bare thigh on display.
The distance was too far and the light too dim to catch the color of his eyes. But the way they glittered—cold fire, sudden and intense—made her suspect blue. Or gray.
Hunger flashed there, raw and fleeting, before he blinked and it vanished.
Cassie wasn’t vain. She knew she looked good tonight—classic, elegant, a little dangerous. If he hadn’t noticed, she might’ve been disappointed.
But she hadn’t expected that look.
That kind of look.
And it shook her.
“A gentleman would look away. Or lend a hand,” she said, a wry smile tugging at her lips—masking the way her pulse thundered.
His gaze dropped to her thigh, and heat bloomed across her skin, sending every nerve ending spiraling with desire—quick and electric.
The night was still young, and hostess duties awaited her inside. She hadn’t planned for this… handsome distraction. But that’s exactly what he was.
He stepped forward, hands outstretched—reaching, it seemed, for the lacy ribbons of her garter.
He froze when she arched a single brow, a warning written plainly across her face.
“That was a rhetorical statement, wasn’t it?” he said—just a touch too conceited for her liking—as he held up his hands in mock surrender.
Cassie scoffed, equal parts amused and annoyed by his audacity. And arrogance.
Perhaps he was a doctor, after all.
But really, who was this man? And what was he doing turning her perfectly managed night into a slow-burning mess?
