One squeeze, and he could crush her. She stared into his keen blue eyes. Her heart flickered. He wouldn’t hurt her; she was certain of it, though she couldn’t say why. Silence cloaked the forest. Even the birds had stopped singing, and the trees themselves seemed to be listening. She swallowed hard, but the dryness in her throat didn’t ease. “Speak your vow to me,” Adar murmured, leaning close enough that the ghost of his breath grazed the side of her forehead, leaving her skin tingling. “And I will speak mine to you.” His fingers flexed, not forcing, not threatening. Just holding. “If either of us breaks it…” His gaze burned with icy fire. “…may the gods steal our last breath before the next moon rises.”
