We were ignorant, and we were ignorant of the fact that we were ignorant! This was ignorance squared, and it often led to disaster.

I’m coining a new subgenre of horror which i call Queer Fungus Horror. The basic requirements to be a part of this subgenre are:
1. A main character is queer (or, I guess any character can be queer, but in the examples I've come across, the main character's been queer)
2. There's a motif of fungus/fungus spores spreading as a metaphor for going insane/evil spreading, etc.
Bonus points if there's also a woman in white who terrorizes people with sleep paralysis and if the setting is an old house
My finds in this subgenre are:
She is a Haunting by Trang Thanh Tran (ignore the 3.4 star average on Goodreads; this is a solid 5/5 stars for me)
What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher (if I'm not mistaken, this takes place in the same fictional universe as "Fall of the House of Usher," but this is apparently a sequel and I never read the first book, so I could be mistaken. I'm also a little rusty on my Poe, so I'm not sure if this is a retelling of any of his stories)
Anyway, feel free to add entries into this subgenre! I'm always down to read more about queer characters who are afraid of mushrooms!

Cyberpunk
Cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction, emerged in the late 20th century and is characterized by its focus on advanced technology, cybernetics, and a dystopian society. This genre, often described as a fusion of "high-tech and low-life," juxtaposes the rapid advancements in technology with stark social decay, inequality, and corruption.
The origins of cyberpunk can be traced back to early influential works, with Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (1968) laying some of the groundwork. However, the term "cyberpunk" itself was popularized by Bruce Bethke's 1983 short story of the same name. It was William Gibson's novel "Neuromancer" (1984), though, that truly defined the genre, introducing seminal concepts like cyberspace and artificial intelligence and setting the tone for the cyberpunk aesthetic and narrative style.
At the heart of cyberpunk are several key themes. One prominent theme is the intersection of technology and human augmentation, where characters often possess cybernetic enhancements. This fusion of human and machine raises profound questions about identity, humanity, and the ethical implications of technological progress. Dystopian societies are another central element, typically depicted as futures where corporations hold more power than governments. These settings are dark, gritty, and oppressive, highlighting the dire consequences of unchecked capitalism and technological misuse.
Protagonists in cyberpunk stories are frequently hackers, rebels, or anti-heroes who navigate the seedy underbelly of society. These characters, often fighting against corrupt systems, embody a sense of rebellion and resistance. The concept of virtual reality, or cyberspace, is also central to many cyberpunk narratives, exploring both the possibilities and dangers of immersive digital worlds, where cyberspace becomes a battleground for control and freedom.
Visually, cyberpunk is heavily influenced by film noir, characterized by neon lights, rain-soaked streets, and a blend of futuristic and retro elements. Iconic films like Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" (1982) and anime such as "Akira" (1988) and "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) have been pivotal in shaping the genre's aesthetic, creating a distinct and enduring visual style.
The influence of cyberpunk extends into modern interpretations through video games, fashion, and music. Contemporary works like the game "Cyberpunk 2077" and the series "Altered Carbon" bring cyberpunk themes to today's audiences, delving into issues like surveillance, data privacy, and the impact of AI on society. In fashion and art, cyberpunk inspires a unique style that blends futuristic elements with punk and grunge aesthetics, incorporating leather, metallic fabrics, and tech-infused accessories. Artists often depict sprawling, neon-lit cityscapes and cyborg characters, capturing the essence of cyberpunk's vision of the future.
Cyberpunk remains a relevant and influential genre, offering a critical lens through which to examine the complexities of our relationship with technology. Its exploration of the intersection between humanity and machinery, the implications of a tech-dominated future, and its distinctive style ensure that cyberpunk continues to be a compelling and thought-provoking genre.

Don’t. Murder. The locals.
This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strong’s cardinal rule. After all, there’s a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when you’ve worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm décor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pie…the last thing you want is to disturb the peace.
So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrook’s own meets a grisly, mysterious demise—and you wouldn’t blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree.

People have been asking me what the difference is between tonesem, emo, punk and goth
and it's simple!
emo = fans of emo music
punk = fans of punk music/punk movement
goth = fans of goth music
tonesem = fans of extratone/splittercore music
They all also wear different "styles" of clothing too, yes all mostly in black, but you don't have to wear the clothes to be a part of the subgenre, LOL!
#emo#punk#goth#tonesem#info#rambling lol#ill make a proper list one day since many of you haven't even heard of tonestem lel it's a bit underground#extratone#splittercore#subgenre#aestetic

Mad Ramblings #1: New aesthetic/literature idea. Pseudo-Solarpunk or Faux-Solarpunk.
1: Pseudo Solarpunk: So the idea came from for for designing “eco-friendly living”. But usually they come from corporations or governments. But mostly there made for fixing or making things better. But most of the time they never fully promise or they never get made. Most of the time there just made for looks. Examples include Dubais’s “sustainable” city or Saudia Arabias the Line City. There plenty of more examples. But I recommend looking into Hanzi Freinacht article We Must Reclaim Solarpunk from Authoritarian Regimes it’s really good and its what inspired me to come up with this idea.
So basically imagine a setting for a dystopia where the solarpunk is just aesthetics and no practical use. Or can only be used by a select few, aka the elite while the lower classes suffer. Basically the modern day but worse. Also add some authoritarianism into it and you got pseudo solarpunk or faux solarpunk. I might make another post probably going in much more detail, but no promises.
It’s currently 1:48 am, decided to write this before I forget it, feel free to do what ever with this idea.
#new aesthetic#subgenre#new subgenre idea#idk anymore#can't english#to tired to read a dictionary#faux-solarpunk#pseudo-solarpunk#is probably already a thing#might make a follow up post#latter#mad ramblings

Folk Horror in Literature
Something ancient has been awakened in the woods…. This premise encapsulates the essence of many folk horror stories. I have briefly touched on folk horror before in my review of the YA folk horror anthology The Gathering Dark, but as this deeply rooted subgenre of horror experiences another wave of popularity, I figured it was time to dive into it more deeply and give you a few recommendations…
