People criticizing Nosferatu for 'romanticizing abuse' don’t seem to understand the essence of Gothic romance and literature. These stories aren't meant to make you feel comfortable or align with conventional morality. Gothic romance thrives in the tension between beauty and horror, weaving together the sublime and the grotesque to evoke emotions that are complex, raw, and hauntingly human. It’s not about endorsing behavior—it’s about exploring the darker corners of desire, fear, and the human condition. 🖤💀🪻

Bravo also to Robert Eggers for probably the least bad depiction of Transylvania in Western vampire cinematic history:

1. Having actual Romanian actors doing the dialogue in Romanian. You'd think this is a low bar to clear but nope.

2. High quality costume design that looks pretty accurate to 19th century Romanian and Roma peasantry, even down to specific braided hairstyles from the Transylvanian region.

3. Depiction of Roma people but refrains from having them as some typical Hollywood exoticizing role like a magical fortune teller etc. They're in like half a scene, just chilling and playing music in front of an inn.

4. Use of the word "strigoi" which are actual spirits in Romanian folklore, unlike the term "vampire" which didn't exist in Romania.

5. Sorry to the Nosferatu moustache haters, but a Romanian nobleman would have had that exact facial hair.

6. Depiction of religion (nuns, churches) that actually looks like Eastern Orthodoxy and not some vaguely spooky goth Christianity.

I just read the beautiful and heartfelt tribute Kyle MacLachlan wrote to the late great David Lynch. God, it’s David Bowie’s passing all over again. I did not expect to be sobbing into my cereal today, but here we are. 

The impression and influence that he had on film and the creative process was phenomenal and the absurd, colorful, and fantastical world of his own making will remain near and dear to my heart. 

David understood the human experience in a way that floors me no matter how many times I rewatch his works. Just bursting at the seams with beauty and varying perspectives.

He stood by the notion that creativity, like life, doesn’t have to make complete sense and meaning doesn’t have to be definitive. Which is something I will always site in my own creative pursuits. 

RIP to a true artist, cryptic, and human being. What a man.

Ok, this has been on my mind a fair bit. I’m sick to death of cookie cutter, plastic, too pretty to be real, dudes in my media. Squeaky clean, stereotypical, and EXTREMELY socially acceptable isn’t attractive. Nor is ‘adorkable’. It’s just not. 

I need more genuinely weird, funny, morally chaotic/ambiguous man creatures in my media. Pronto. Actually weird but sweet men are the shit. More please.

I saw a post about an alleged excerpt in a letter Napoleon Bonaparte wrote to his wife, Josephine, asking her not to bathe before his arrival home in three days. And…dude…that hit me like a bolt of lightning. Sexuality and romance away from the sterile, refined, high maintenance, easily consumable representation is world-shaking and devastatingly beautiful. Thus, it became the thought that birthed this post. Perfect isn't hot or attractive.

I need more gritty, inelegant and sometimes gross imperfections in my romantic interests. And I need equality. More ‘freak matches freak’, please. Women can be genuinely weird, gross and chaotic too. More embracing that from men please. More silly ass, absurd, over-the-top romantic shit, please. More ‘oh I guess we’re doing this now’ stuff, please. More weird love.

Is he clueless sometimes but catches on eventually? YES. 

Stupid, cornball jokes? YES. 

Is he dumb sometimes? YES.

Is he dramatic and theatrical? YES.

Talking at the speed of a bullet from a gun or talks in short, slow bursts? YES. 

Does he communicate non-verbally and is mostly clueless but happy to be there regardless? YES.

Standing there while a literal goddess does what she wants to do and follows her lead sometimes? YES.

Dresses himself in weird/colorful/unusual/jingly jangly stuff like a deranged peacock? YES. 

Is he silly and really good at one very specific thing/a few things? YES.

Is he basically an old, stained, stitched-up teddy bear that you found? YES. 

None of this normal, socially appropriate crap. I need WEIRD. Give me WEIRD. Weird and funny is SEXY. 

I want him to just…do stuff and be there. But it’s chaotic, lovely and fun. A little unnerving? Sure. But it’s FUN. IT’s. FUN. 

More ‘hey, remember that thing you said you needed/wanted? Here. here it is but I put my own spin on it’ 

None of this effortless ‘chosen one’ crap where he’s just a plain, run-of-the-mill t-shirt, rice cake of man, or a ‘I said all the right things’ dialogue tree crap. Or, ‘duh he’s the main character so everything works out for him and good stuff just happens to him for that reason’ stuff. No. None of that shit. No more Everyman shit, 'quirky' but easily consumable, or Mr. Perfect stuff. Fuck off. Give me a freak with a sweet side. More zany freaks, please. More insanity.

Give me something to chew on like a dog toy. Come on. Grow up.

Last song: Type O Negative's Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All). Favourite colour: I love black but I also am partial to smokey light blue and red. Makes for a killer makeup colour combo too. Last book: 'Blue of Noon' by Georges Bataille. It's bleak, razor-sharp, sick, and depraved. Highly recommend. Last movie: Rewatched the H.P Lovecraft inspired 'Bride of Re-Animator' (1990). Such an awesome movie. The perfect mix of amazing sfx, fake blood, and actual terror.

Last show: Rewatched 'Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre' episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. never ceases to slay me.

Sweet/Spicy/Savory: Probably sweet. I have an addiction to sour worms and sugar in general. However, I do love putting hot sauce on everything.

Relationship status: Single lady of the Haunted Victorian estate. However, constantly, eternally thirsting and yearning. Last thing I googled: "black death wikipedia" Very interesting. The bacteria 'Yersinia Pestis' on the fleas on the rats was responsible. Wiped out 30-60% of the European population.

Current obsession: Still on the Beetlejuice hyperfixation train. it's been like 5 months. *choking and spluttering*

Looking forward to: Watching the new Nosferatu movie. guaranteed I am showing up to the theatre in my Sunday best. and, my birthday.
