A concept. Wolf and Janet do a stake-out. Not on any crime scene, but on Beetlejuice and Lydia’s first proper date. Wolf helped Beetlejuice rehearse for the date so he’ll act like an actual gentleman (with Janet sitting in for Lydia). Beetlejuice and Lydia are having dinner at a window-side table at a restaurant and Wolf and Janet are watching from a car with binoculars.

Janet: *watching Beetlejuice make wild hand gestures while Lydia nods along* I think he’s bragging about something.

Wolf: No, no, let HER talk, you idiot! Dammit, Janet, hold my binoculars! I’m going in!

Another plothole 

Why does the Afterlife need guards if they already have an Afterlife Crime Unit? Are these guards specifically for the Soul Train? 

They look very similar to Russian 15th century descent, and oddly enough Rasputin, who was known for his resilience towards dying. When people tried to k1ll Rasputin, he was thrown into the freezing Neva River.

The Afterlife is basically purgatory before you board to The Great Beyond, as none of the civil servants are really happy with their jobs, and The Afterlife is CONSTANTLY looking for volunteers. And every time CODE 699 is broken, about 200-300 years is required for more clerical work, according to the Handbook. However, the souls with no issues or unfinished business can pass on freely. Beetlejuice is not getting on that train anytime soon.

And I'm trailing, okay...

My theory is that these guards work similar to the Afterlife Crime Unit, but they're more focused on getting "pure" souls to the Soul Train. They were visibly agitated when Lydia pulled Astrid off the train. We know that a ghost has successfully gotten out before and The Living was most likely sent away on the Soul Train by accident:

Delia has the option to board the train with Charles, but we never see them physically get on and depart. Wouldn't the guards have made sure they both got on? + Even though Delia was joking she'd haunt Lydia and Astrid, does this mean there's some unfinished business with Lydia or in Winter River?

The bureaucracy down in the Afterlife is kinda fucked up, and it seems to be entirely dictated by the Handbook for the Recently Deceased and Afterlife Crime Unit. Everything else is sort of cause-and-effect down there.

^ Bonus: According to the marriage contract, that also means Beetlejuice wants to marry Lydia because he is guaranteed back a spot in the Living and well, because he loves her. He does not want to swap souls with her. The Soul Swap confirms there's more than one way to get out of the Afterlife, and I highly doubt he would try to send Lydia on the train. He might go with her on it though. Beetlejuice has been trying to "get out" forever, but it seems like the Afterlife has laws that are unjust towards The Living, especially with ones that get tricked into entering The Afterlife & those who are recently deceased that have a choice to board the train. Marriage is (so far) the only option that wouldn't have any negative effects to Lydia (that we know of.)
