(sub)Genres: Disaster
We were ignorant, and we were ignorant of the fact that we were ignorant! This was ignorance squared, and it often led to disaster.

Is it the standard for Black writers to make Black sci-fi and fantasy films with an always triggering lesson? Do Black writers in these genres have to always present their work with trauma…do we have to always make the art of escapism so traumatically racialized?
Tumblr media
And there are many more to list and name.
Escapism isn’t supposed to be reality. Police brutality and time travel shouldn’t go hand-in-hand. Magic and being the “token” Black shouldn’t be what makes supernatural (I watched the trailer for The American Society of Magical Negroes …😒— and the word Negroes in a film with zero historical context is so cringe).
Why we can’t just make a film with an all Black cast in these genres with potions, leprechauns, other realms, giants, dragons, creatures, magical powers, wizards, witches, goddesses, princesses and princes, queens, kings, castles and it be just that?

People are mostly describing Saltburn as a Black Comedy or a Psychological Thriller, but I’m not hearing anyone describe it first and formerly as a ROMANCE, which is the most fitting genre term for it by far.
Is Psychological Romance a genre? Romantic Horror? Psychosexual Thriller? Give me more really unhinged Romances!!!

"What's Your Favorite Kind of Movie?"
Is The Wizard of Oz a Fantasy or a Musical? Is Jaws Horror or a Thriller? And what the hell is The Killing of a Sacred Deer? (This post is going up the second I turn 35. Happy birthday to me.) It’s a question you tend to get when you tell people you’re into movies. Some have a ready answer, usually a favorite genre (in my experience, usually horror); some can readily name a favorite film or…

What is Post-Production? — The Final Steps in the Process
In the filmmaking process, post-production is the stage where raw footage is meticulously refined into a polished final product. This phase is where the magic happens, transforming a collection of scenes into a cohesive, engaging film or video. In this blog post, we’ll explore what post-production entails, its key components, and why it’s vital for creating high-quality content.
What is Post-Production? Post-production is the phase that follows the completion of filming or shooting. It involves a series of tasks aimed at editing and enhancing the footage to produce the final version of a film, video, or other media projects. This stage is critical for ensuring that the content is visually appealing, audibly clear, and narratively compelling.
The Key Components of Post-Production
Editing
What It Is: Editing is the process of selecting, arranging, and refining footage to create a coherent and engaging narrative. It involves cutting unnecessary scenes, arranging shots in the desired order, and ensuring smooth transitions between scenes.
Why It’s Important: Effective editing shapes the story and pacing of the film. It helps maintain continuity, eliminate errors, and enhance the overall flow of the narrative. The editor’s goal is to create a seamless viewing experience that aligns with the director’s vision.
Sound Design
What It Is: Sound design involves adding, adjusting, and mixing audio elements, including dialogue, sound effects, and music. It ensures that the audio enhances the visuals and contributes to the overall mood and atmosphere.
Why It’s Important: High-quality sound design is essential for immersing the audience in the story. Clear dialogue, appropriate sound effects, and well-chosen music can significantly enhance the emotional impact and realism of the film.
Color Correction and Grading
What It Is: Color correction adjusts the colors in the footage to ensure consistency and accuracy. Color grading goes a step further by applying stylistic color effects to achieve a specific look or mood.
Why It’s Important: Proper color correction ensures that the footage looks natural and consistent across different scenes. Color grading adds a stylistic touch that can enhance the visual storytelling and evoke particular emotions.
Visual Effects (VFX)
What It Is: Visual effects involve creating and integrating digital elements into the footage to enhance or alter the visual experience. This can include CGI, special effects, or compositing.
Why It’s Important: VFX can bring fantastical elements to life, create immersive environments, and correct issues that can’t be fixed in-camera. They are essential for genres such as sci-fi and fantasy, where imagination and visual creativity play a significant role.
Soundtrack and Music
What It Is: The soundtrack includes all the musical elements used in the film, from background scores to theme songs. This involves selecting, composing, and integrating music to complement the visuals.
Why It’s Important: Music sets the tone, enhances emotions, and supports the narrative. A well-chosen soundtrack can elevate the viewing experience and leave a lasting impression on the audience.
ADR and Voiceovers
What It Is: Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR) involves re-recording dialogue in a studio to improve audio quality or correct mistakes. Voiceovers are additional spoken elements used to convey information or provide commentary.
Why It’s Important: ADR ensures that dialogue is clear and intelligible, especially if there were issues during the initial recording. Voiceovers can add depth to the story or provide important context.
The Post-Production Workflow
Import and Organize Footage
Start by importing all raw footage into an editing system and organizing it into bins or folders. Proper organization helps streamline the editing process and ensures that all necessary elements are easily accessible.
Rough Cut
Create a rough cut by assembling the footage in a preliminary sequence. This version focuses on the basic structure and flow of the film, allowing for initial feedback and adjustments.
Fine Cut
Refine the rough cut into a fine cut by making detailed edits, adjusting pacing, and incorporating feedback. This version should closely resemble the final product, with a focus on achieving a polished narrative.
Audio Post-Production
Enhance the audio elements, including dialogue, sound effects, and music. This involves mixing and mastering to ensure clarity and balance across different audio tracks.
Color Grading
Apply color correction and grading to enhance the visual aesthetics and achieve the desired look. This step involves adjusting colors, contrasts, and brightness to create a cohesive visual style.
Final Review and Export
Conduct a final review to ensure that all elements are correctly integrated and the film meets quality standards. Once satisfied, export the final version in the required formats for distribution and screening.
Why Post-Production Matters Post-production is crucial because it transforms raw footage into a finished product that can effectively communicate the intended message and captivate the audience. It ensures that every element, from visuals to audio, works harmoniously to deliver a compelling and professional end result.
Attention to Detail: The post-production phase is where meticulous attention to detail is essential. Every cut, sound effect, and color adjustment contributes to the overall quality of the final product.
Creative Enhancement: It’s an opportunity to enhance the creative vision of the project. Post-production allows for adjustments and refinements that elevate the storytelling and visual appeal.
Professionalism: High-quality post-production is a hallmark of professionalism. It ensures that the final product meets industry standards and stands out in a competitive market.
Conclusion Post-production is the final, transformative stage in filmmaking that brings together all elements to create a polished and engaging film or video. From editing and sound design to color grading and visual effects, each component plays a vital role in shaping the final product. By understanding and appreciating the post-production process, you can better appreciate the effort and artistry that goes into creating memorable and impactful content.
