Summer 2024 Behind-the-Scenes Reading
This summer was the summer of thesis reading.
There’s a very academic bent to this write-up, because, as I mentioned in last quarter’s write up. This was the summer of thesis reading. The write up you see before you is in no small part an extension of my thesis journaling, which was the half of my summer that wasn’t reading, meaning that even the non academic books here have been read in an academic mindset with an academic…

Pardon me while I geek out on the Production side a bit.
This stuff here. This is the stuff that makes parts of my brain feel like Wheeeeee!
Andrew Lincoln (Rick) has deep-set eyes and sharp, angular facial features, which plays into his acting style, whereas Danai Gurira (Michonne) has shallower-set eyes. She has a very open face but darker skin, so she can take a lot of different tones and textures of light and color. They were an interesting duo to light…. Adrian Peng Correia, DP - The Ones Who Live
After I had been hired to do the middle block [Episodes 3-4], Adrian and I spoke about the look and he updated me about the discussions. I supported 65 mm because I felt the story needed to feel big. It needed to be part of the world of the original “Walking Dead,” but it had to have a clear, distinct vibe – something that belongs specifically to Rick and Michonne, because they are so pivotal to the story. The ALEXA 65 was an obvious choice to give it a very distinct visual break from the original series and the spin-offs. — Wesley Cardino, DP - The Ones Who Live
*****
There were times when I was watching the mothership show (the original The Walking Dead) where I wanted to throw something at the TV, specifically because of the way Danai Gurira was lit. Or not lit. Or care wasn’t taken in lighting her even if the director was going for something of a mood.
Run Adrian Peng-Correia and Wesley Cardino their flowers for the work they did on The Ones Who Live.

Whumptober 2024 Day 24: Equipment Failure
“Kill them,” the technician ordered.
The battle robot looked out at the huddle of shivering civilians. Not military targets. Not threats.
The technician aimed a kick at the robot’s metal leg. “Kill them, you useless tangle of circuits.”
One of the civilians, a small child, started crying. He stared at the robot with terror in his eyes. The robot looked away.
With a grunt of annoyance, the technician pulled out a gun and shot the child between the eyes. “You need maintenance,” he told the robot. “A long session this time.”
“No, please—”
“By the end, you’ll regret disobeying.”

Unpopular opinion time: a 'forgiving abusers' storyline isn't automatically bad.
I say this as someone with Trauma Credentials and as someone with a debut coming out soon which very much celebrates NOT forgiving your abusers.
You can write a story about a character choosing to forgive someone who was abusive but has since put in the time and effort to improve themselves, without making it seem like this is always the 'right' thing to do. Without implying that anyone who doesn't forgive their abusers is wrong. Without implying that abusers in any way deserve forgiveness and reconciliation if they become better people.
The problem is not inherent to the idea of an abusive person being redeemed and forgiven. It's with how that arc is portrayed, and with ensuring that the victim is always centred and that their comfort and choice is prioritised.
If you write a survivor-centric narrative that shows genuine change and contrition from their abuser - and recognition from the abuser that they are not owed jack shit - you can have the survivor react however they please with full autonomy. Whether that is walking away and telling their abuser to never contact them again, or establishing clear boundaries and letting them back into their life.
People do genuinely forgive people who have abused them irl, and they are not saints for doing so. But they're not gullible fools asking to be hurt again either. They're not 'bad representation' of survivors.
Forgiveness and the lack of forgiveness are both equally without moral value. They are a personal choice that each survivor can make individually, whether in fiction or irl. What matters is that this choice is their own, that it is informed, and that they are empowered to decide how much they want the person who abused them to be in their life.
#Obviously we live in a society which#Sadly#Sees forgiveness as a virtue and a necessity#For the most part#But this is specifically talking about complaints I have seen about fic/fanfic#This is not an inherently problematic concept#A thorny one and one thta should be handled with appropriate care? Absolutely#And I do think a lot of writers should think twice about writing this sort of story#Unless they feel equipped to handle it

hi ash how are you doing? :]
hi artie!!!!!! sorry ik i kinda like disappeared but i’ve been competing in a film competition in california for the last couple of days!!!! it was wild and included events such as winning five awards, almost kissing my best friend, getting mass amounts of sunburn, and making some of the best packages i’ve ever made. but i am now back and will continue to be insane abt block men!!!! how did the rest of your trip go? :D
#i genuienly think this trip changed me fundamentally.#there’s just smth abt running around in a city you don’t know making films and news stories and basically living w the people you’re-#-working with and seeing that even as you’re going around the entire city you’re always surrounded by people w that same lanyard as you-#-holding camera equipment and working on the same things as you with the same interests that’s so insanely life changing#like being in studio is not exactly smth that will make you popular in my school. but here everyone loved it the same way you did#it was so fucking cool#anyway it was the best experience of my life and i am never going to be normal again.#ash.txt

I have little hope that crwby will ever address the origins of the faunus (or if they do, it'll be in the show proper instead of shoved off into a side product), but I'm genuinely curious as to what they would go with if they did
They could say it's mutations, a la X-Men, or a radiation accident like Spider-Man, or Salem decided to fuck around with dna for whatever reason and created a new race
So many options yet so little care
#rwde#if you really wanted to make the sdc look terrible then have the previous ceos know that exposure to raw dust is bad for your health#and then have them send truckloads of people w/o safety equipment anyway#then when the exposure starts mutating the workers and their families#activate the smear campaign#boom. faunus origins and evidence of schnee assholery all in one#its what im doing for my story anyway#i like to think the traits the mutated take on are from the same animals as the surrounding environment#you got jungles w big cats and monkeys? then you got folks walking around w panther ears and prehensile tails#live in a snowy tundra? hows that extra hair on ya body treatin ya? keeps ya nice n warm dont it#idk the faunus could be SOMETHING

I don't personally enjoy death in my stories for one because I have no experience with it personally and for two because you can't torture a character anymore once they've died 😇
#and I mean like perma death not talking abt any afterlifes and the afterlife in my story is based on DnD type deals#but even harder to get to like people can't just die and come back like nothing it is a PROCESS and NOT an easy one and also#not commonly practiced because it is rare to get it right (to be more direct it HASN'T been gotten right yet it's just a theory atm)#I never talk about my story or character OCs BUT I guess here's a taste of it#anyway I don't really kill off my characters but if I do experience a death of some sort then I probably will start writing abt it#but for now my characters are relatively safe also this isn't to say I'm unwilling to write abt death I just don't feel equip to handle it#in terms of a story revolving or somewhat revolving around a grieving process of some sort of dealing with all the different feelings#I dunno that stuff so I wouldn't write it as of right now#torture on the other hand#OH a good example for how I view the whole death thing in my story is kinda like Adventure Time#like that episode with Ghost Princess like ghosts and other paranormal stuff exist and are prominent#and they do go and meet with death thru a portal but that's like the surface level afterlife you can't really hit the deeper levels#unless you are dead and no one can see that stuff unless they are dead like when Finn dies we finally see what it's all like#as for like the levels and stuff I dunno abt all that I have like a very vague concept of how that would work but it's kinda like#beyond human comprehension y'know? that's how I view it and like death is PERMANENT and it's not suppose to be messed with#or bad things happen 👻👻👻#there are even more things abt it like little exceptions to the rules but the rules still apply even still it's just like#living on borrowed time or being forced to like#well I don't wanna get too much into that tho that's like super spoilers#but man I enjoy thinking abt it

just finished breaking bad
#spoilers ahead so! tread lightly#breaking bad#bc i binged a lot of this show some episodes do not stick out to me like i cant tell u what happened on which episode or even which season#the naz!s were so left field like i think the story would still be the same without the hooked cross tattoos#it was surprising how the drug cartel or whatever didnt have much involvement in s5. like why did i think for sure theyd relocate to mexico#a follow up wouldve been nice is all im saying#OK. characters! my fav were mike jesse gus skyler and saul. hated walt literally since day 1. didnt change much up until the end#listen i can understand the concept of characters being morally bankrupt egotistical narcissistic abusive and manipulative#but walt was just . not charming enough a character to do it sorry he is what he is. sorry to him but i cannot stand him#i can appreciate some of his monologues though! fly (episode) was great for that the show needed it at least in my opinion#i like that all the characters are fundamentally flawed ! walt is at his core insufferable but he makes a good tragic story👍🏼#hank was so stupid like? 😭 when lab equipment from walt's school were stolen i thought that'd be it lollll#it was well written for the most part i think!!!!! some parts needed suspension of disbelief but whatever yk#what matters to me the most is whether i cried or not and yeah. yeah i did cry!!!!!! so what!!!!!!!!!#THEMES. obv theres change/corruption... power and abuse of power. toxic masculinity? and family. living life to the fullest if ur insane#also!!! just finished el camino and i liked it! simple story but i like the themes in it. this man's been through so much#jesse was point blank a victim of abuse and im glad he gets to leave the past behind and move forward with his life#owned up to the choices that gotten him up to this point. had control over his life again and building a new future for himself#very cool. also the ending of brba? i think it's good enough i mean i cant think of anything more fitting#but man did he do some incredible... maybe irreparable damage to his family huh. midlife crisis things <3#i hope they heal <3 somehow <3#wait about the themes too in brba!! one is reaching ur full potential... again if ur insane#idk maybe sometimes it's ok to flop. just as long as ur enjoying ur life and ur happy... i think that's fine! walt u and i will never agree#izza💭

An OC is like a noun, and can be a person, place, or thing!
an oc doesnt have to be a person or even an animal. the only limit is your definition of "original character" and your imagination. some of my ocs are literally buildings.
#i have multiple characters that fit this sort of thing#i have magic sapient musical instrument characters#I have teenage pipe organ kids with funky homunculi bodies needed to adapt to modern life and they're just... teenagers#i have a character that's an entire building AND the headmaster of a magic school#ask me about the elevator mafia#a guy can be killed and have the evidence of the murder wiped between floors#and the culprit cleanes up nicely when the doors next open#i took a concept from one book i read made a character a literal dual-aspected god and now the construction equipment worships him#there's living weapon characters that are swords and spears and spacecraft from tons of different stories#my bff and i took a concept and then bestowed intelligence into 2 different fictional planetary cores#there's a whole race of statue people but they are all fountains like gorgeous fountains like you'd see in a plaza#every single one will happily answer your inquiries but they also do not answer questions helpfully#GUESS WHO IS AUTISTIC! meee

🙏😔Stop, please 😔🙏
Don't ignore me, listen to our sad story💔🥹🍉
My name is Kariman Dohan, I am 25 years old. I was a committed and diligent teacher, and my husband, Ayman Olwan, 30 years old, is a business administration graduate, but due to unemployment and difficult conditions in Gaza, he was forced to work as a fisherman. We have a wonderful son named Hamoud, who is one and a half years old. We live in Gaza, specifically Khan Yunis, where the fishing boat, fishing equipment and the school where I worked were damaged🥹🫂💔😭😭😭😭
We have been displaced several times, and our tragedy has reached the point that we now live in a tent that is unfit for living. We desperately need your help, I have launched a donation campaign but I cannot get the funds so I can get $50000 to get through this current crisis.
15.000$********75.000$
Before the war and after the war, this is what happened to us😔💔
................
I know that the world is full of people who want to help others, and you are one of them. Please be with us in this ordeal and share your donation to help us get out of these difficult situations🫂🥹🥹🙏🙏🍉

solution nine discourse on the for you page. here's my input: 👎
#yeas yes yes its a dystopia the citizens arent equipped to deal with grief yes yes#however#they did not handle it at all lol#hopefully in the patches they might. try?#that would be nice.#but like it's really hard to feel for the people considering the conditions of their continued survival etc etc. how is it much different f#rom living memory...?#like idk. sucks to be you i guess? damnn. maybe your society is screwing you over. but uh. theres nothing to work with here#the most compelling thing of the entjre area was the lightnjng sickness concept#that was then dropped like a hot potato#frustrating#i just personally cant be made to care for a place so cushioned and sanitized so as to be unaware of reality like that#theres nothing THERE#to feel for...#it needed to be thr central focus of the msq there imo. there needed to be something to force the citizens into a reallt really tough spot#not just. end of entire story. oh noo! our qphene!#and then cut to black#tuliyollal getting the siege scene was fun but i feel like it wouldve gone much farther to see s9 in peril#to further the themes of idk#people are people everywhere! even these people who do not know loss can band together and#spread the liiight of hopeee amongst each other in order to persevere#idk idk idk idk idk IDK#and i GET that the seat of imperial power never suffers the same way their targets do. thats an interesting angle#but i donf know how much i trust them to deliver on this so im just left wondering why they didnt take the easy out to reinforce the themes#edit i literally did forget that there were eeevil soldiers raiding s9 LMFAOOOO Buf also. ghe fact that i forgot. is maybe poignant

Nothing can truly show you the reality of what's happening in Gaza, not a picture, not a video, and not even words. The truth is far worse than anything an image can capture. Families are not just enduring genocide, they’re being erased. Their history, their homes, their existence, wiped away like they were never there.
What’s left behind? Bits and pieces. Fragments. A scrap of fabric here, a shattered memory there. People are still trapped beneath the rubble. Some are alive, their voices weak but desperate, pleading for help that will never come. There’s no rescue equipment. No teams to save them. And anyone brave enough to try is met with drones, striking down anyone who gets close.
Those who’ve managed to survive aren’t just hungry, they’re freezing. Imagine huddling in a makeshift tent, shaking not just from fear but from the biting cold that seeps into your bones. The wind tears through everything, ripping apart whatever tiny bit of warmth you’ve managed to cling to. Inside the tent, there’s no comfort. Only the sound of bodies rustling as they try to stay warm, muffled cries of grief, and the haunting sound of people buried beneath the rubble, their faint cries for help echoing in the dark.
The cold doesn’t care. It doesn’t spare anyone—not children, not parents, not the elderly. It sinks into everyone, leaving them numb, both physically and emotionally. Hunger takes what little strength they have left, and the cold takes their hope. This isn’t some tragic story from the past—it’s happening right now. These are my people. This is my family.
A single line can hold the weight of an entire story, and a single choice can save a life. What if you skipped that extra coffee, brush pack, or subscription and put that money toward rescuing lives in Gaza ? One small sacrifice from you could provide food, warmth, or even survival to my family who’ve lost everything.
You might wonder, “Does it really matter? Can I make a difference?” The answer is yes. Every dollar you give is a line of hope, a stand against the darkness. Don’t let this story fade. Don’t let Gaza disappear into silence.
Please help us and donate now if you can, and reblog this post to spread our story.

Thinking abt my salmonid ocs again... I need to design them soooo bad but at the same time I have yet to decide what to do with their clothes as while the traditional battle salmon pant would suffice my need to do needless extra work for the sake of worldbuilding is powerful indeed
#rat rambles#oc posting#splat posting#to be clear the main reason that this is a thing Im considering carefully is because these are historical salmonids#they would have lived about 200 years ago give or take a few decades#so comparably modern history but still old enough that cultral differences should be considered#mainly these guys are mostly salmonids from more wealthy tribes and only two of them regularly engage in combat#the other two are a part of off branches of the main tribe that handle trade and nature preservation respecively#the nature reservation being especially important as they have a recently discovered king salmonid which is already a big deal but said#king is also a goldie so its like a once a thousand year sort of event#now of course this newly found king is set to be cared for and as such will likely not drop for several decades at least#but given the importantce of this event making sure that the deep sea ecosystem is ready for it is vital#now one issue is that usually kings are allowed to continue their work until their health declines too much but usually kings are assumed#to be on the battlefield since statistically thats just the most likely job for them to have#but this goldie king is a part of the trading sect of his tribe so he is quite ill equipped to be on the front lines and survive#so theres been some conflicts within the different sects about how this potential issue should be addressed#and thats where the main cast comes in as the main four characters all try to work together to find a solution to appease all three sects#and by that I mean they fail miserably as this is the origin story of eternity's old tribe and its founder is one of the four mains lol#hey on the bright side only one of them die within the main plot but the downside is that she was indeed murdered by her insel ex gf#oh og eternity how terrible you are but tbf she was heavily manipulated into most of her actions and beliefs

When deciding who to work for there is a sliding scale of employers that goes from lil mom and pop shops up to corporate monoliths. I have worked at both ends of the spectrum and I can pretty definitively say that tiny businesses are hands down the most insane employers.
The sweet spot is a place that has like 10-20 stores; that’s the best possible work environment. They’ll be polished enough to have protocols that make work structured, but not so bogged down with bureaucracy that nothing can ever get done.
This story is not from that sweet spot. This story is from my time working at Oil and Vinegar. Now, like many little franchise stores, the idea was solid. There was on tap imported olive oil and vinegar and it was really delicious. Top shelf. Unfortunately, each location was like the Wild West because owners varied wildly.
My owner was the human embodiment of Mr. Krabbs. His eyes were just constant dollar signs. Throughout my training he informed me of the price of every single piece of equipment I touched and how much it cost to replace it.
He had cameras set up to watch us, and an app on his phone to access the live feed. He’d call us to ask what we were doing when he’d just checked a camera to make sure we were being honest.
Now, the trouble was he had two locations. His location further south did amazing. It was way more centrally located and got three times the foot traffic. The one I worked in was in the snottiest mall possible in Arizona and consequently the rent was through the roof.
It was not going well for my store. We didn’t get as much traffic, so there was only so much I could do in a day. I could dust, sweep, and wait for customers. I read a lot and was frank when he called to interrogate me. I always asked for additional tasks but he never had any. What could I do to prop up a failing business?
But this man was convinced there was some Secret Reason that the store I was in was doing worse. He crunched numbers, looked at staff, and eventually hit upon the most insane possible solution.
We used too much toilet paper.
We were probably stealing toilet paper! Bleeding him dry one single ply square at a time! How dare we need to use the bathroom?! His south location used half as much toilet paper as we did, we must be thieving little monsters!!!!
Friends. The south location was populated entirely by men. My location had three people on staff who had to sit to pee. It was so blindly transparently the source of the discrepancy but this man was convinced we were making off with toilet paper to bankrupt him.
So he implemented what he believed to be an entirely reasonable response to this base treachery. We were allowed to have one roll of toilet paper. At any given time, one roll was permitted to us. This was so transparently unhinged that we protested but he insisted. If we were low on toilet paper we needed to call him to drop off a roll that he brought from his home. Smiling jovially, he assured us he lived so close by that it would be no problem!
When we needed to call him often for more he started tearing his hair out. What were we using toilet paper for?! Why wasn’t his genius plan to stop our scandalous waste working??!
Finally, the manager, the only man on staff had to pull the owner aside and be like, “Look, man, their bladders are smaller. They need to wipe every time they pee. They need to pee even more on their period. Is this really the hill you want to die on?”
Yes. It was. The manager was fired unrelated reasons and denounced as a traitor. The toilet paper ration lasted until I quit and probably until the store closed six months later.
