So, let me get this straight: disabled people are the ones being punished for the economy not doing well, for inflation, for lack of resources, for poverty rising and whatever other kind of reason you can come up with (I am referring to the Uk situation but this concerns the whole Western society) because they aren’t working, they need benefits, they need money for “free”, they need healthcare and so on.
It’s always them who are sacrificed when there’s a crisis (we have seen it with Covid). Cut the benefits, cut the healthcare, cut accessible spaces. Now, force them to go to work. And if they don’t work then no money because you aren’t contributing to the prosperity of society and if you don’t contribute you don’t deserve to live apparently. As if one has value only through labor and work and how much money they make for the country.
But why I have never heard a politician going after the tax evaders, the billionaires, the corporations? You see? There’s a pattern here.
The fact is — and it’s a tragic and scary reality — that we are governed by people who still think that there are humans who are more worthy and humans who are not. This is slowly and easily becoming the rhetoric of the survival of the fit, the only kind of human who can bring prosperity is the healthy, the able, the skilled…
Moreover, it’s not like disabled people don’t want to work. We want to. But, what about accommodations? What about accessible workplaces? What about the ableism that still persists? And then, yes, there are disabled people who are so unwell, whose mental health is in shambles that it is impossible for them to work (or work for long periods of time). You seriously want to tell me they don’t deserve to live? Because if you cut them the benefits how are they supposed to survive in a World led by money?
This is capitalism at its peak. And it disgusts me. Before thinking in terms of wealth and economy, we should seriously remember that we are human beings first and foremost. And yes, we can flourish without sacrificing anyone.

So! Below are several links to programs and foundations that promote adult literacy! Hundreds of millions of adults world wide were failed by their education system and now must fend for themselves while trying to read contracts and hospital bills and infographics from the CDC. But they don't have to be alone, and it is never too late to learn!
ProLiteracy: A network of educators, researchers, and advocates which provides research reports, learning materials, and other support to adult education programs. They assist with connecting volunteers to local programs and provide guidance and support to community leaders trying to use their programs' findings to advocate for social and political change.
Adult Literacy League: An adult education program in Central Florida, which aims to provide students with one on one attention to foster growth and confidence. It also offers English Second Language courses and job skills training, and each new student receives a comprehensive assessment to determine the best plan for them.
Saint Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center's Foundational Skills Program: A 100% free adult education program aimed at adults reading below a fifth grade level. It operates year round and is either in person or remote, and they now have a GED testing center that is open to students and the public alike.
Washtenaw Literacy: A free network of trained tutors for adults in Washtenaw County, Michigan.
Adult Learning Program (Las Vegas/Clark County): Free education classes to those lacking a high school diploma, those seeking to learn ESL, and adults who read below an eighth grade level. Also assists in students' search for gainful employment. Nevada got so fucked by COVID and the education/literacy numbers in the South West are grim. Please help these guys.
Hawaii Literacy: In addition to helping adult residents of Hawaii Island learn to read and write AND bridging the education gap in Hawaii's underserved children, they offer computer literacy classes, ESL classes, and a bookmobile. 1 in 6 Hawaiian adults struggle to read and write.
#Not Stories#mutual aid#adult literacy#'uuhhhggg its soooo disappointing when i meet a girl who's like 'yeah omg i luv 2 read'#'and then she only reads booktok trash and grocery store thrillers and manga'#'like come on thats such a turn off :/'#'like aren't you bored??? what about reading The Foundation and War & Peace and Grapes of Wrath where's THAT girl haha'#nobody gives a shit what sort of high school reading list gets your dick stiff! NOBODY!#I'm too busy dealing with the fact that most public education systems hate students of color and anyone with a learning disability#from the very bottom of my very dyslexic heart go fuck yourself#'this chick only read 8 books in twelve months lmfao thats so pathetic'#'i read eight books a MONTH some people really give up after high school'#do you think my great grandfather or his father got to fucking finish high school????#or were they busy getting fucking shot at in germany in two different fucking wars????#thank every god you wanna name that my lunatic mother stopped abusing me long enough to put me through FIVE YEARS OF TUTORING#to get ME literate because that's what it fucking took#I watched more than one kid from my underserved semi rural district drop out at 17 or 16 or 15#because their parents needed a third paycheck or they were gonna lose the goddamn house#10% of my majority black school district graduated FUNCTIONALLY ILLITERATE and not an ounce of it was those kids' fault#our racist ass school district failed them and the district did NOT protect my white ass when I was diagnosed dyslexic#the adult literacy crisis is not about you getting a girlfriend who can discuss Ayn Rand with you#the adult literacy crisis is about us being exploited and neglected and made easier to control and manipulate#reading is FUCKING HARD and learning to read after the age of six is SO MUCH HARDER#so from the VERY very bottom of my VERY very dyslexic heart#FUCK. every so often i will see a post from a leftist on this website that is so egregiously ableist that i remember that like. oh yeah the userbase of leftists on this website is violently anti-disabled people and will jump at any chance to demonize any of us for any reason. i just forget that fact because i'm extremely dedicated to curating my space
i'm paraphrasing here but i saw a post that said, "every time i see an American [disabled person] mention being scared about the election because they're afraid of losing their benefits i have to laugh. anybody who wants blood-soaked money from the US government deserves to starve" which. like. goodness that's a lot to unpack. i think we should burn the whole suitcase instead !
#i inserted [disabled person] because they used a fucking slur instead and i didn't want that in my post#like i feel like there should be room for disabled people like me whose lives literally entirely depend on accessing said >#> extremely limited benefits in conversations about whether voting in this election makes you complicit in genocide#which like! i do understand. i do. it's nauseating to think about what this shit ass country is doing. it's horrific. i do not blame anyone#> for not wanting to be a part of that. *and* i am also terrified for my own life because i remember the first time trump won it suddenly >#> became IMPOSSIBLE for ANYONE to get on benefits. EVER. and so many disabled ppl i know went to renew benefits theyd had for decades >#> just to be denied. one of whom was a below-the-neck paraplegic. he died because he lost those benefits!!! because trump won#i really do understand why people dont feel right voting for harris. or why they don't vote at all. i truly do. but holy shit i am so scare#and yes! i am aware that people in palestine and gaza are suffering so much worse. and i wish i could change that#but every single person in power in the US is pro-israel and eagerly drinking the anti-palestine kool-aid. no matter who wins >#> things will not change in that part of the world. and it is infuriating. when the revolution comes this will change. but it hasnt.#the revolution will not save me as a physically disabled person. it will not save any of us. we do not matter to leftists. i am sorry but >#> this is the one thing i have learned after being in leftist spaces for over 10 years. and posts like the one i mentioned prove it#so i am very sorry. i really am. for being physically disabled. but i cannot survive another 4 years relying on my parents for everything#if trump wins i will be killing myself. this is a promise. i cannot do that again#i know it makes me a bad person to be afraid that harris will lose. but people on the left already think i'm a bad person for being disable#i want the genocide to stop. i absolutely do. i also want to survive. i am terrified that the US leftists will sacrifice disabled people#like me so they can feel good about being put in a real life trolley situation#again. im sorry. im so fucking sorry. i wish i was a better person. i wish i was able to give more. i know that if i was just a good#person i would be able to have a job and give to every palestinian gofundme on my dash. i would be able to do more than my daily clicks >#> and reaching out and calling representatives that don't care. if i was a good person i would be able to convince my parents that z*onism>#is deeply fucking racist. and that israel is wildly racist and killing palestinians for fun. if i was a good person i would be able to make#>them leftists too. im sorry. im sorry. im sorry im not good enough. im sorry that im scared. im so scared and it's not right for me to be#when so much worse is going on because of this countrys bloodlust. im sorry that im benefiting from being born here i dont want to be#im sorry for not having any other options. if i was a good person i know i would have them. im sorry. god im sorry im so fucking sorry

We ought to write more Pokemon fic some time. We want to recreate the Pokemon Manners/Human Manners cheat sheet that we made a few years ago we think that this site would like the Sliding Scale Of Politeness When Greeting A New Pokemon You've Never Met Before.
#we speak#writing#we grew up with pmd games and we feel like the way that pmd pokemon's dialogue tends to be excessively... direct?#should be a feature and not a bug when any pokemon that you meet might be totally unfamiliar with your species and biology#it's probably very polite to start up front with some basic facts about yourself so they know how to act going forward#the very upfront feel to dialogue also very much helps with keeping the dialogue feel more... pokemon#people mock the series for weird npc dialogue a lot but we think that taking these things literally makes for more fun society building#it doesn't all have to fit with socially acceptable for our world we think. polite in our world isn't even consistent by household.#sometimes a polite interaction sounds like “hello! i'm poochyena! i like to chase people and bite!”#name and immediately socially useful information. now you know about the chasing people and biting so you don't assume it's rude#of course poochyena bites and chases people. it likes to do that. you can say you don't like that and it might stop doing that to You#but it will not stop biting and chasing people because that's what it likes to do and it will probably only befriend people okay with that#it makes a very specific dialogue feel that's very fun to do. we like how the pokemon world tends to treat any sort of like#disability or “weird” things as something that you just say out the gate and everyones like “oh okay”#and then treat that as Part Of Interactions going forwards. there are a surprising amount of parts of the pokemon manga#that are dedicated to working around a character's disability after one or all of their means of dealing with it get taken out#admittedly we aren't that caught up on newer content but we find the way that it tends to be just Accepted as very refreshing#making the dialogue this direct does also tend to make it read as more “childish” in english and particular because a lot of Maturity's jus#learning how to dance around what you're saying or phrase it in different ways to get your idea across differently#whereas here everything is just as direct as possible. “i don't like charmander”. “i like roasting berries”. “i want to dig things up”.#all pokemon dialogue tends to go towards being exceedingly simple and it makes for some very distinct writing#especially when you have to tackle complex situations with characters who probably dont employ that sort of vocabulary#though we personally enjoy doing this sort of stuff your mileage may vary ofc#we are biased towards this sort of thins because we find it MUCH more fun to build up what we're talking about from blocks#than to like. try and use more indirect wording that may lose things in translation#unfortunately this is not fun in irl conversation. everyone has to be on the same page and you need to use the same playbook to communicate#we REALLY wish people said what they meant though. we're really tired of being asked shit like “is this accessible”#when what they mean is “can you climb these stairs” a question which depends on the day our energy level and how things have been going#there are a lot of things we could say that would make us feel like some sort of anti sjw type guy and a lot of em boil down to just#"for the love of god dont dance around a Sensitive Topic just get to the point and ask us about it this just makes things harder for everyo

that thread i rbed like ages ago about men's urge to disagree/object to/obstruct women for no reason has seriously reset my brain its so crazy but i think actually one of the rare things that actually might represent a way forward for how men engage with women. like there's always going to be the rightwing ardent misogynists who don't care that they're doing this but for all the men in the middle that do on some level want to be better it represents 1. fairly confronting evidence that your position in the patriarchy actually affects how you relate to women much more than you realise it does even if you think of yourself as self-aware and 2. a genuine example of something that makes us all suffer because the fact you niggle on every single issue like what flavour of ice cream to buy is unhealthy for relationships (of any kind) AND introduces unnecessary amount of background strain to your life for no real gain. maybe im being an idealist but i love the idea of a man experiencing a certain amount of horror upon recognition of this as a catalyst to other more meaningful recognitions and changes both in how he evaluates the competence of women but also in recognition of the subjectivity of he perceives things i.e i think one of the biggest barriers to confronting the housework gap is often that men don't SEE how much women are doing and also don't SEE things that need to be done, to the extent that ive seen men argue that the solution is just for women to not care about being surrounded by mess. anyway no conclusion but i cant stop thinking about that thread both super horrifyingand also kind of hopeful
#i absolutely think it applies to other forms of marginalisation as well#but can take different forms e.g a man assuming he will make better choices than his wife even about something really minor and stupid#vs an abled person assuming they have more insight on a disabled persons' experienes/condition#but i think its the same fundamental urge going on#but yeah like personally i find disagreeing with ppl really unpleasant when it builds up that its like you need to pick your battles for#when it matters. of course you can go to far and avoid conflict but like as a perfectionist autist i have to constantly address my tendency#to like. get annoyed about someone pouring milk wrong or something. like even when they are actually wrong. sometimes it doesnt matter.#and i think the fact that this is how you treat people you LOVE and in many cases would probably say you respect#should make it liek especially wounding to realise#i also dont think women are immune to this behaviour as i said above and after all we pick up communication habits from the people we#communicate with. but i think it stems from patriarchy in pretty much all its iterations#and theres also an answering affect women can develop where you just shut down and learn to give in on every issue/devote your energy to#avoidit coming up in the first place#like you stop saying what flavour of ice cream you want at all. which i think is the end goal of this behaviour whether thats actually what#the person doing it desires or not thats what it seeks to achieve

Give me some awesome Joe facts!!! I love Joe I think about Joe a lot.
JOE TRIVIA POWER HOUR
joe was going for an art history major before he dropped out of college. even tho he has managed to repress the adhd for a very long time, if people were to show him a painting and ask for more info about it he would basically become a wikipedia article for it. its the one thing he cant resist infodumping about
joe and lily became friends when they were 4 years old and were just inseperable ever since then, so now they see each other as siblings c:
joe could probably kill god if he wanted to. but only once
joe is associated with chrysanthemums in a way where it was just a fun fact and then it. spiraled. and now has actual symbolism in the comic. i just decided it was his favorite flower cause they could be pink and i liked the word chrysanthemum how did it come to this
there are 1 billion joe focused aus in my brain that vary his characterization wildly but the thing is, they are all still in character. in the mermaid au he is perfectly sweet and innocent and kind, in the horror game au his primary personality trait is Loves Killing And Violence. joe is just. like that. if you give him a role to play he will shift to fit it and this is all in character. ask me about all my aus if you want me to disappear for 50 hours and come back with a thesis of info
he's the worlds most specialest boy
this is not a good thing for him

#i wanted 2 post this on twt but word limit + fear of being Jumped so here we are! DSKJFHKSDJHF anyways#thinking abt the plague that is Individualism and how so many people agree it's harmful on certain axes but neglect to acknowledge how they#still have this mindset on other axes#saw a post where disabled leftists were (rightfully) criticizing self-centered “leftists”. but i'd seen this post after narrowly avoiding#the same Bullshit Queer Discourse#and witnessing these two things side by side made me think like. Huh.#in both instances you have a group of people who consider themselves to be “just” and “progressive” but neglect members of their communitie#and fail to acknowledge their own narrow-mindedness. despite attempted corrections from said neglected members of these communities.#and it's FUNNIER when you have people who claim to be all about love when they hold 0 love for their communities. that's the thing i think#there are sooooooooooooo SO many people online who are only interested in talking about Themselves. and not in the 'people like me are#are often overlooked and others need to be aware of this' type of way. no. i mean like people engaging with meaningless discourse online#trying to prove that They are going through something UNIMAGINABLY hard and that their word is absolute (it is usually just white#folks in their twitter echo chambers in all honesty. i'm sure there are other instances but i cannot speak on those.)#so you have people who are so self absorbed. people who cannot grow until they stop making shit about Them Only#these are the same people who will talk about being “lovers” like you are a hateful ass person do NOT lie#where is the genuine care and love for your community?? Everyone involved in that? do you listen? do you hold yourself accountable for your#mistakes? are you okay with being wrong? do people feel safe around you?#are you okay with trying because you care and not because other people are watching? would you do it if people weren't?#i dunno. i hope this makes some sort of sense#sap says#i could talk abt this for HOURS so i'll stop here. for now

the person who helped today when I fell out of my wheelchair actually did a really great job, so I want to share in case other people wonder what to do. [Note: this is not universal, this is merely a suggestion from one person, every wheelchair user's needs are different! I am a person who uses a manual chair usually pushed by someone else who is also disabled.]
Scenario: you see someone in a wheelchair fall out of their chair, and you have the ability to help.
1. Approach and ask "are you okay?"*
2. Next question if they say no, are vague, or open to continuing conversation** is, "is there anything I can do to help?" Or "what can I do?"
If they say no to help, then that's the end, just leave and go do whatever you were doing!
If they ask for help or say they are mildly injured, ask "what would you like me to do?" And wait for an answer before doing anything! If they seem dazed or confused, they might have hit their head or had another medical event*, or they might just be like that due to regular disability. Be patient.
Do not touch the person unless they say to, or they are like, unconcious in the middle of the road, ya know?? Wheelchair users usually have conditions that mean being handled improperly can severely injure us, you could cause much more damage than the fall.
Some things they might need you to do:
Bring their wheelchair closer (mine went about 5 feet away after it dumped me)
engage the brakes of the wheelchair
hold wheelchair steady if it's an unsteady surface (mud, hill, ramp, wet, etc)
offer an arm for them to hold onto to get up (them grabbing you, not you grabbing them) or move another solid item closer for them to use (i.e. a chair) [only do this if you physically have the ability to!]
If the terrain is rough (i.e. a parking lot), they *might* ask you to push their chair to a more stable area once they are back in their chair
nothing
Something else
Do what they ask, NOT what you think would be helpful. If for some reason you have to do something (i.e. you can't stop oncoming traffic and need to get them out) ASAP, tell them what you plan to do
Keep in mind they might also be D/deaf, have a communication disability, be stunned after the fall, have a head injury, not trust other people, etc. Be patient and treat them as a person with autonomy and agency! They might need to just sit on the ground for a few minutes to recover before trying to get back in their chair. They might want everyone to leave them alone. They might ask you to call someone specific. Their chair might have broken and that can be extremely distressing. All of this is like if your legs spontaneously stop working when you're out and about!
A lot of wheelchair users (NOT ALL) have ways to get into their chair on their own once the chair is close enough and brakes engaged (but it's hard from the ground!). Here's what brakes look like on a lot of manual wheelchairs, in case they ask you to lock the brakes. They're levers on each side and pushing the lever pushes a bar against the wheel to hold it still.
Tumblr media
ID: A manual wheelchair with the brake levels circled in red and labeled "user brake levers"
*There is also the possibility of course that a person fell out of their chair due to a seizure or other medical event, so that is why it is important to ask if they are okay. If you saw them hit their head, tell them so. If they had a medical event, follow protocol for that, I'm not gonna get into it here (thought I could).
**sometimes a person will be clear after the first question i.e. "I'm all good thanks" clearly means they do not need you to ask another question, you can just leave them alone. Keep walking and don't stare. A lot of the time people will be a bit banged up but be totally fine and able to manage on their own.
TLDR: Ask the wheelchair user if they're okay, then what they need, and then do exactly that, including leaving them alone. Thanks!

"Cinderpelt should've been a warrior, cats can function perfectly fine with 3 legs" "Jayfeather could've been a warrior, blind cats navigate well with their other senses" "Briarlight could've gone on patrols, have you seen how well cats with paralyzed legs get around?" OK but that's not the point at all. Let's stop talking about that. It doesn't matter if it's technically true. The books present us with these situations where we, as readers, are meant to understand that these characters are unable to fulfill the same duties that their able bodied Clanmates can, regardless of the accuracy to real cat biology. The lens we need to use to examine disability in Warriors isn't "can they function like abled cats?" It's "If they can't function like abled cats, what are their choices and what does their quality of life look like? How are they treated?" Because that's where the real issues are.
#this is genuinely a very good point#like yes Jayfeather could have been a warrior he could have learned but because of his dream sight they weren't willing to accommodate#for him in that way. Additionally Brightheart only GOT that accommodation because Cloudtail put in the time and effort to accommodate for#her in a way the rest of the clan was not nearly as willing to do. This comes back to the very real question that disabled people face and#that is the question of how are we accommodated for? It's not like WC has the fucking ADA or anything there is no law telling them to#accommodate for their clanmates so instead it is up to the cats who genuinely care to help because it is the right thing to do it's how we#continue to survive is we help eachother and we do see snippets of this with the care elders are shown but often disabled characters are#not given that same kindness OR are shoved in the elders den. Longtail is an interesting example because he both chose to retire and#is accommodated for by Mousefur who guides him along and helps him get a better picture of what's going on#And I remember seeing this post that Longtail retiring is not really a show of the continuous ableism in the series but rather that Longtai#no longer felt fit to be a warrior while he is adjusting to his blindness. And that post resonated with me as someone who suddenly#became somewhat significantly disabled out of the blue after getting COVID and how it was a struggle for me to do my regular activities#anymore. I even had to stop sitting at my desk and started laying on my bed due to the levels of exhaustion.#this then wraps back around to OP's point of what are the choices they have what is the quality of life they will now face and when we look#at how being accommodated is not entirely the norm we understand that question more and more. I find that reading the disabilities#in this book series under this lens very much lends more to my experiences as a disabled person because I find that there ARE things#I either can't do or genuinely struggle to accomplish and would not want to be continuously doing as my day job or something not if I had#literally any other option.#wc
