so i was visiting my aunt a few weeks back and we got on the subject of star trek (as it's one of the few commonalities we share anymore).

i asked her about what it was like when twok came out and *that* ending and the look on her face was sheer devastation. then she said,

“you probably don’t remember this, but your uncle and i got married the day ‘search for spock’ came out. we cut the reception short and took the entire wedding party to the theatre- well, MORE than just the wedding party. it became this big group of people that all bailed on the reception because we had to know if spock was going to be okay.”

💫 My Star Trek Cinema experience🖖

(Okay apologies in advance for a long post but I NEED to tell you all about it!!!)

So with the anniversary of The Search For Spock my local cinema was playing a ONE TIME VIEWING of it, so of course I had to go! I just finished my exams that day like I said before so it was like my lil treat :) I went in closet cosplay as McCoy from Star Trek V since it was what I had and McCoy is my boy and I was having fun lol. I also wore this Spock pin that my best friend got me!

I was genuinely so excited!! I’ve never done anything Star Trek related irl (nerd culture in general over here is kind of delegated towards more modern animes and stuff, which makes sense since that’s what’s popular but it kinda stinks for the more traditional nerdy fandoms. I remember getting SO excited the first time my local nerdy shop had a little Star Trek section full with figurines!!) and conventions are a rare sight too, ESPECIALLY ones for specific niches.

There was only about 6 of us in the theatre and there was nobody in front of us which was cool (this seems to be a pattern with me where every film I want to go and see has like…2 other people lol). I did indeed get to see THE scene. Uhura’s litte smile after Spock talks to Jim! Kirk carrying Spock while he’s unconscious! Sulu’s OUTFIT when they’re rescuing McCoy I want to draw it so bad! Scotty…just Scotty!! AGH this was so cool to experience on the big screen. I did notice it was a bit blurry but I think that’s just because cinema screens are so much bigger now and with the original picture quality it looks kind of funny. Unrelated but I was wondering what an older film like Jason and the Argonauts would look like on a screen like that, with the grain and the goofy effects and sound design. Oh and the taxi driver had the classic rock station on so I was havin a great time

Guys the voyage home is so funny and great and now that I have watched it for the first time, I need to explain my thoughts on how it’s like no other Star Trek movie and that’s why IT WORKS!

The two movies before this were intrinsically within the Star Trek universe between all the conflicts characters and development around the main plot of the two movies. Like, wrath of Kahn brings back an old villain, we see the different dynamic of Spock captaining the ship shortly, the ceiti alpha ear worms are so grossly sci-fi, and of course as many know (spoilers for this old old movie) Spock’s death!! Then, the search for Spock gives us more lore about Vulcan society and stuff: finding out how Spock put his mind into Bones’ brain and that you could reconnect that mind back to its body. Plus, the movie revolves around Klingons being villians (a classic Star Trek trope) and the aftermath of the Genesis planet. Kirk’s son dies! His ship explodes! Spock doesn’t have all his memory!

The voyage home breaks away from these archetypes by setting up a whole new problem: that weird whale signaling space buoy that was making earth. Where did it come from? Why did it go to earth? Ok gang we need to find humpback whales! Fun! Oh no they have been extinct for a long time what are we gonna do? Jump in our stolen Klingon ship with our OG crew and fly around the sun and slingshot ourselves back in time to get some whales. The gang gets to go on wacky adventures!! Spock literally swims with the whales and bonds with it!!!!! Scotty accidentally on purpose gives this corporate guy the means of making transparent aluminum!!! Chekov almost dies!!! Bones, Kirk, and the lady that tags along with them who is a marine biologist, break Chekov out of a hospital with police in tow!!! This lady hops onto Kirk at the last moment while saying goodbye so she would be transported with him and go to the future!! Everyone is so happy to finally have each other safely while the whales are released!! Kirk gets demoted to captain of his own ship because the other 8 charges against the fleet were disregarded because they just saved the world!!!!

Guys it’s so wild and out of nowhere. It’s full of comedy and suspense. There’s so much love between the crew. They get their happy ending in this one! No more trauma put onto them!!

Star Trek III: The Sherwood Syndrome

The second game in the Star Trek III collection of solitaire games. A member of the Federation is messing about with a planet that oddly resembles the Sherwood forest during the tales of Robin Hood. He’s posing as their king, taking advantage of the people. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise need to rescue the population by having them overthrow their king, but without arousing suspicion.

You control the crew of the Enterprise, trying to recruit units to your cause, by either freeing them from prison or convincing them to join you. You need to be careful how you act, as actions such as beaming to and form the Enterprise will cause the “witchcraft” levels to increase, and you’ll lose the game if you interfere with the people too much in ways they don’t understand.

I found this game a bit fiddly, but I thought it was nice that a board game felt like an episode of the show.

THIS MEANS

That spock and kirk should be married canonically because of pon farr
