Yesterday I kinda overheard some coworkers talking about the holiday coming up and one of them said "I just don't understand why people get so wild about it" And so of course my dumbass butted in to say, "Well historically it was a pretty wild event, what with all the stabbing".

They were talking about people going out and partying on St. Patrick's day.

My entirely Jewish friend group had a St Patrick’s day party. We went all out- balloons, banners, accessories, and even my favorite thing ever and despised by everyone else- Guinness.

I, the one Irish-American Jew, was greatly amused by this event. No one quite understood why until I remarked offhandedly “Pretty funny that we’re celebrating Ireland becoming Catholic.”

The room went silent. The pro IRA playlist (again, only I comprehended the political messaging) whirled to a stop.

“What?” My friend Josh finally managed, like this was a great shock to him.

“Uh, yeah?” I waved my hands. “It’s Saint Patrick. Saint.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.” My roommate Meg defended. “Don’t hold Patrick’s first name against him.”

“Do you even know what the shamrock represents ?” I was nursing Guinness and considering how exactly I’d become the priest of the group. “The three leaves. Three in one- Father, Son , and Holy Spirit. In ainm an Athar agus an Mhic agus an Spioraid Naoimh

The minyan worth of Jews recoiled, like this was information I’d cursed them with and that they’d never be able to recover.

“At least,” Josh took soda bread and tore a piece off of it. “We get good food out of this.”

“Also- no one eats that raisin speckled monstrosity.” I added helpfully. “Complete American Invention.”

“Joy, haven’t you done enough?”

EDIT- my friend Meg’s remark about the Saint was a joke. I am sorry if it wasn’t clear. My friends did indeed not know that it was specifically about Catholicism, and thought he was a figure who chased the snakes out of Ireland. They are not idiots, it was just a humorous interaction where I was the only person from the culture being celebrated.
