I still think that this is the funniest thing I've ever made
So, as a Jewish Club board member at my college , I was tasked with making a sukkot meal flyer but the details kept on changing.
At first we were getting bagels catered, then it was pizza, and now it’s completely unknown. Then the dates kept changing - from the 19th to the 20th to the 18th ETC .
So this is what I have so far.

I really don’t know how we made it out of the desert.

thinking about keeping kosher (or any religious dietary restrictions, but im kosher so thats whats relevant) in the modern world and how it being "outdated" is kindof, in fact, the point. its the preservation of how people have lived for thousands of years. its an unbroken chain back through time of recipes and ingredients and ritual. the fact that we "know" that pork isnt "unclean" or that cooking no longer requires gathering firewood (for most people) doesnt actually change the fact that abstaining from pork and not cooking on the sabbath are both integral parts of Living for literally millions of people worldwide.
im proud to keep kosher BECAUSE it isnt intuitive, its not easy and its not always the most convenient or pleasant option, but i dont engage with religion for conveniences sake. i dont avoid pork because pigs are Categorically unclean, but rather because they are unclean for Me. religion carries the stories and art of peoples, it carries their ideals and histories and yes, foods. these foods add context and deeper connection to the experiences of people long dead. in order to grasp those experiences, the entire puzzle must be taken into account, including the 'annoying' restrictions.

“Mary Wallace was the first woman bus driver with the Chicago Transit Authority in 1974. Her job applications were rejected for three years, but her persistence paid off. She was eventually hired under an affirmative action program. Wallace became one of the city’s most popular drivers over her thirty-three year career.”

another stupid-early morning, and between our respective course loads- him organic chemistry and me pathophysiology- I asked for the full story in how he got all of Ramadan off.
He sighed, and let me know that he did indeed try to explain to our manager that all he needed was to get shifts not around sunrise or sunset. But that in him explaining what Ramadan was, the plot very quickly got lost into this unhinged confusion where our boss was trying to google how people could survive an entire month without food or water.
So halfway through, he decided to pivot and go along with it, expecting less shifts in March because that's a difficult academic time anyway. Then, he had to keep a straight face when the end-product was the entire time off with paid leave.
So, now, he's in a hell partially of his own making where his boss genuinely believes he doesn't eat for a month and is trying to offer all non-Christian workers March off. I offered him time off for Hanukkah. He hit his head against the desk, and groaned.
I recently got an on-campus job. During the interview process, I requested that I not be scheduled on Friday nights or Saturdays as I am a Jewish student.
My boss immeadiately brightened and rushed to explain - "Of course ! Of course! We want to accomodate you! We have another worker who takes off for Ramadan. Do you need to take off for Ramadan?"
I shook my head, incredibly confused. "Uh. That's. Not my jurisdiction. I'm good." Boss nodded but was sure to add "Let me know if that ever changes. We can help you with Ramadan."
#he knows he's tumblr famous#and is entirely apathetic to it#I'd also never snitch on him#we sit in silence most of the time

#what's the bet Ahmed was just asking for certain shifts during Ramadan and Boss got excited and was like “just take the whole ramadan off!”#“don't even worry about it! we support you! take the time you need!” I'm scheduled to work with him tomorrow morning so will find out then 🫡 .We're both STEM majors who use the early empty hours to study so I will report if I get more than a grunt out of him about it.

@vangoggles THAT WHAT I WAS SAYING .
And I was finally on a shift with this guy. We were both sitting in silence because we had the ass-crack-of-dawn slot.
Over my coffee and twirling my Magen David necklace around my finger, I say "So. Ahmed. Ramadan.
And Ahmed over his energy drink, sighs - "don't you say shit about that."

Me, at our torah book club- I really love this passage where Esau and Jacob make tentative peace. It's my favorite, maybe after Isaac and Ishmael burying their father together. Ah, that's such a toss-up.
Rav David, off the cuff- Hmm. Into all the parts about familial dysfunction, aren't you?
Me, who's just been read for filth in front of 10 other people- Listen-

Hey
Hey Americans.
The federal government is about to get useless for at least a bit. This is a GREAT time to get involved in state level environmental orgs. That's where you're gonna be able to do the most for the next few years. Even a bit of casual volunteering can make a big difference.
I've done this off and on for years and when we go local we WIN. And friends winning feels good. This is how a lot of progressive agendas have won in this country. The whole US isn't out of this. People ARE still fighting climate change all around you.
You could be one of those people, in community with other people who are doing something.
doom and gloom "oooh everything is pointless oooh I'm so deep and edgy because I love trying to be the death of hope" people will just get blocked. I'm not talking to your crab-bucket ass.

if you are trying to invent a version of nazism that doesn't include antisemitism then that is no longer nazism. it is something else. a component of nazism, maybe, but at the core of nazism is a seething hatred for and desire to eradicate all jews, and if you catch yourself going "this is nazism but not targeted towards jews-" then you are no longer talking about nazism.
racial- and ethno-nationalism. racial- and ethno-supremacy. fascism. ultranationalism. these are all words that already exist and they are free to use! there is no nazism without antisemitism. if you're trying to separate nazism from antisemitism in order to make a point, put on your thinking cap for five seconds, figure out what it is you are actually talking about, and use that word instead.

People: The Jews aren't talking about Musk!
The Jews: Are in fact talking about it.
The Jews: No one is talking about rising and rampant antisemitism.
People: Are not in fact talking about it.

do you know how unsettling it is to see constant posts and tiktoks of "this is just like 1933" from non-jews who leave antisemitism out of the equation completely? it's blasting the message "hey you're in danger!!!! here's a reference to your intergenerational trauma that's probably pretty triggering! but i don't give a shit about you and won't protect you"

Oh, to be a dragon from a 15th century German Jewish manuscript wearing a long, silly hat.
