awesome song. i love how the smurfs dance party has it but the main line just dance games don't. only way this map could be improved is by changing it to a smurf parody named "i wanna smurf with somebody", where what "smurf" means in this context is left entirely ambiguous

Relatable or not relatable?

Some (many) months ago, somebody complained that Japanese characters shouldn't be necessarily relatable and even talked about Sonic getting retatable as a bad thing. And that's a weird statement to me. The first character i found relatable was a japanese character. I was 12 at that time.

As a child I watched lots of cartoons. Western (such as Disney, Hanna&Barbera... even cartoons from the '30s that were still around, and most were in their original language, English) and Japanese. Italy has a long tradition with the Japanese cartoons, it goes as back as the 60's. And they were translated directly from the Japanese language.

Western characters, overall were all somewhat perfect. Not Mary Sues but almost. The good boys were all nice, smiling, outgoing, humble and talented. The bad guys were all clumsy, sadistic, psychopath, uncivilized.

I think the character I could related most were the smurf. There were grey areas there, because the smurfs, though overall all kind hearted, didn't always act wisely and used to mess up, even badly. And the evil Gargamel and Azrael saved and took care of a wild cat.

Now, at 12 I found a character I could relate with. And she was a Japanese character:

She loved cats, she was likeable (uh, maybe as annoying as prime Sonic, and probably for this I love them both) and she failed at school. well, not all things were like me, I mean, at school for some reason I was some times just slightly less than the top student, and other times I failed bad. My strong point was science. Also she had the worst boyfriend she could ever had, a punchbag with a lame personality. But a character should not be identical to you to be relatable.

In general, most Japanese character are relatable, they're flawed. Few might be too perfect or too over the top (Goku for example became more and more dumb. In Super he was flanderized to be suddenly turned later in a straight up antihero, but between the end of the first serie/early Dragon Ball Z his IQ started to suffer in favour of his ever growing muscles mass)

About Sonic, I've found X Sonic very relatable. In Sonic X he is very elusive and way less friendly than in other series, yet he was interesting to follow, not too perfect with his bad social skills, his crippling fear of water, yet always cheerful (Some of his behaviours didn't make sense here and there though, but I don't talk about them there, is not important for the topic).

Some claim autistic people in particular love Sonic. I don't think Sonic is especially loved by autistic people. The myth is born under unfortunate circumstance. A certain Chris Chan, who was a massive Sonic fan and who happened to be autistic. Though is not his fault that the fandom has a bad name, there are some Sonic fans that tainted the Sonic fandom reputation by their own taliban-like behaviour. This is the reason I noticed people fear to talk with any Sonic fan, as this comment on DA shows (VEI-6-Vesuvius is me)

The comment is not rude in any way, yet it was needed to point out 'I respect your opinion' and I perceived as this person was intimidated by me being a Sonic fan.

Is not a nice feeling seeing decent people afraid of you because of the bad Sonic fans.

"I don't know who you are," Raven drew Omen from her sheath, "but you're not my Jaune."

"Probably not mine, either." Dr. Quinn cupped her chin and squinted her eyes at him. "Though I wouldn't say this couldn't happen to my Jaune."

"Because of you, or because of his world?" The let the torn hoodie on his back slide to his elbows as he spread his arms with open palms. He then shut them into fists as a wide grin spread across his face. "Or maybe it's because of ol' daddy dearest?"

Harley's face almost immediately twisted into one of rage. "Watch it, bub. You may not be my Jaune-"

"But you'll give me a spanking, right?" Jaune chuckled as the woman balked. "Yeah, I've heard that one before. Or at least I think I did. One of the two."

"What the hell are you?" Raven growled.

"Me?" Jaune pointed to himself. "I thought we already went over this." He smiled wide and spread his arms again. "I'm Jaune!"

"No, you're not."

"Sure I am!"

"Not our Jaune." Harley said.

"Exactly!"

"So, what, is this some kind of... clone story or something?" Raven asked as she lowered her sword for a moment in her confusion.

"STRIKE ONE!" A broken sword aimed for her head was narrowly deflected as the duplicate of her son charged faster than she expected. She swung at him only to completely miss as he jumped away. "No clones. Clones are so pass-ay."

"No kiddin'!" Harley swung her bat at him, catching him off-guard. Or, well, mostly off-guard except for his hand that caught the cudgel. "So, is this a multiverse story, or is it something more stupid?" Harley was no stranger to multiverses, especially since Bats was practically an expert on them.

"It's pretty stupid, but yeah, multiverse sounds about right." Shoving her away, he gave a short applaud to her. "Not bad. Clearly you're the brains of the two." Ducking, he avoided being skewered by Raven, who jumped for him using her portal. "Not bad! Way to take a gamble on me being connected to your semblance!"

Batting her blade away as she swung again, he then weaved out of the way of Harley's bat. Bobbing and dodging out of harm's way, the smile on his face grew wider and wider. Then a thought came to him. He stopped and the two women stopped just inches from hitting him.

"Oh. Oh, now this is interesting."

"What?" Raven asked.

"Someone's watching us." He looked away from the two, into the empty space. Colors of every shade swirled around the barren world, like the sky was in a poorly organized washing machine. "Somebody a lot stronger than us. Probably wants me to say they're more attractive than us, too." He then clicked his tongue. "Eh, probably not. Either they're too modest or they don't think too good of themselves."

"What the hell is he talking about?" Raven looked to Harley.

"I got an idea, but..." She shrugged. "Best to just let him ramble."

"Hm... Hm hm... MHMMM~!" He spun around. "Alright! Let's team up!"

"What?" Raven was getting tired of asking these questions.

"To get home!" He turned his head. "That's what you want, right? For us to go home?"

"Please, Mr. or Mrs. Disembodied Entity!" Harley cried. "I'd like to go home to my Jauney~!"

"Who-" Raven groaned. "Whatever. So we're teaming up? Is that what's going on?"

"Yup!" Jaune beamed ear-to-ear. Suddenly, he had an arm around both Raven and Harley. "Just a kid and his two moms, off to get back to their realities! Onward!"

"Road trip~!" Harley cheered, keeping in step with the strange man who looked like her son if he was a smurf.

Raven had already slipped away and let the two walk ahead of her. Looking behind her, she saw nothing but empty wastelands for miles to the horizon. Her only other option was to follow the blue weirdo claiming to be her son. Rolling her eyes with a sigh, she began following.

Summary: You meet Lando but you’re a part of Williams.

“Y/n please don’t get lost,” your aunt tells you, “if you do, ask Alex and he will help you find me.”

You giggle at your aunts words. It’s the first time in 2 years that you’re with her at a race. Together you’re walking on the gird to the Williams pit box. As an important part of the Williams racing family your aunt Claire is always busy talking with somebody of Williams engineers. Meaning you will be left alone and bored. Claire knows you like to walk around a bit to discover things in new places. You've never been to any other race than Silverstone. Meaning that being at the Brazilian Grand Prix is very exciting for you. You always wanted to visit Brazil. There’s just something about that place.

Today’s the first race weekend of hopefully many, that you will attend. You plan to work as a pr manager at williams. With the support of your aunt and your friend Alex Albon it would be a dream come true.

You leave your aunt behind who was talking to some engineers. As you walk around the paddock you explore the place a bit more. You noticing that the cars are already prepared to get ready for the testing. Maybe you should head back to the Williams garage, you thought. As you spin around to walk to the garage you bump into someone. Almost falling you try to keep your balance. As you look up, ready to ask why that person didn’t dodged, you stop and are stunned to speak. In front of you is standing a handsome boy with brown curly hair who gives you an apologizing smile.

He’s wearing an orange race overall, meaning you just bumped in to a McLaren driver. You try to remember who the drivers from McLaren are this season. Before you can identify him he breaks your thoughts.

“I’m so sorry” he tells you. “It’s okay, nobody was hurt” you give him a small smile.

You look at him for a few seconds. He looks pretty, you think. Without thinking you stick out your hand, trying to introduce yourself to him. He quickly grabs your hand, “I’m Y/N,” you tell him. “Lando,” he says back. Now you remember that he is the popular driver of McLaren.

“You drive for McLaren right?” instant regret spreads throughout your body. Of course he’s driving for McLaren look at his overall stupid, you think. “You are a smart smurf. I didn’t know that Williams fans were smart and cute” he laughs and looks at your Williams shirt. Before you can respond you see someone also in an orange shirt saying that he has to get ready. Lando shoots you an apologetic look. “I need to get in my car,” Lando tells you “I figured, that’s fine I also have to go,” you tell him, “Good luck with your race.”

”Wait wait,” Lando says quickly when you start to walk to the Williams garage. You turn back around, looking confused at Lando. “Meet me after the race so that I can get to know you better. You know I never met a cute and smart smurf.” You laugh at his statement. “Hmmmmmm,” you say with a small smile, you’re flattered that he wants to get to know you better. “Please” Lando says with a smile. “Ok, but only if you finish podium” you giggle. “Deal” he quickly tells you and with that he start to walk to his car. You look after him for a moment before you go back too…maybe with a smile that's way too big.

SOMEbody finally told us... SHREK 5's release date.

Universal unleashes the long-awaited sequel on July 1, 2026...

The year the first SHREK movie turns 25, and also in a slot Universal typically reserved for Illumination movies... But that studio has MARIO 2 coming out in April of that year, so DreamWorks taking that prime slot for SHREK Freakin' 5 makes all the sense.

It's also, funnily enough, opening within a few weeks after TOY STORY 5... It'll be a repeat of 2010, when SHREK FOREVER AFTER proceeded TOY STORY 3 by about a few weeks...

DreamWorks currently refers to the movie as "SHREK 5", no fancy titling like 3 & 4. I wonder if that will change. Most of the post-Comcast acquisition DreamWorks movies swapped numerals for subtitles... Like HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD, THE BOSS BABY: FAMILY BUSINESS, etc. Only KUNG FU PANDA 4 kept in line with using numerals.

We even have our directors... Walt Dohrn, who played big roles in all the SHREK sequels (even voicing the 4th movie's villain, Rumplestiltskin) and directed on all three TROLLS movies, headlines with MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU co-director Brad Ableson (who also a history with THE SIMPSONS). Good pairing, I'd say, for it's sure to be fun and wacky at the very least. A new spin on an old favorite.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are confirmed to be back. Maybe Antonio Banderas as well, as Puss In Boots has been part of the core Shrek line-up since 2 and was seen sailing to Far, Far Away at the end of PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH. If not, this either takes place before the end of THE LAST WISH or the trio have left Far, Far Away for some reason. Maybe that sets up a grand union PUSS IN BOOTS 3/SHREK 6 thing? I dunno!

But all I know this, this thing is gonna make a SHIT TON of money. Might even make a play for the highest-earning animated movie record, currently held by CGI LION KING remake. It has virtually the whoooooole summer to itself. Like I know PAW PATROL 3 opens at the end of July 2026, but that's for preschoolers. SHREK 5 has all of that, and currently August and most of September... That's when Universal drops an undetermined animated movie...

(Edit: A little after the fact, I remembered that Disney's opening their live-action MOANA in mid-July of that year... I forgot for a reason, lol.)

I still suspect that that September '26 Universal animated movie will be the other DreamWorks movie for that year, a non-sequel. RONAN BOYLE, still? (Thing's probably toast at this point) Something hitherto unannounced? Or if it isn't DreamWorks, maybe that third LEGO MOVIE? Another Illumination? Christmas 2026 is currently open, maybe a 2nd Illumination movie for 2026 goes there. Could be anything... SING 3, BIG TREE, etc.

Anyways, SHREK 5 is gonna be a biggie either way. The last mainline SHREK movie, FOREVER AFTER, made $700m+ worldwide... And that was when the franchise's popularity was waning.

So... 2026... Looks pretty stacked...

Animation strikes could play a part, too, maybe 2025 is a little scarce in anticipation of that? I couldn't tell ya, but it's unusually a little dry. A good chunk of movies are going straight to streaming that year, like K-POP: DEMON HUNTERS, IN YOUR DREAMS, and THE TWITS.

2026 looks to really make up for that.

Other movies in the works without dates could also round out 2026, like BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE, WBPA's MEET THE FLINTSTONES, the aforementioned third SING and LEGO movies, etc.

Vishnu was the one who first approached to Tez to ask if he wants to befriend him and see where this leads them. Tez, the reserved guy he is, was reluctant at first but then he decided to give it a try. Who knew only a few weeks after the "tryout" they'd be almost inseparable.

Different fighting games handle rank/ELO/LP differently.

In some games, you only have one score, one rank, and that's just attached to your account and not any particular character. So if you want to take an alternate character into ranked battles, you risk the ranks/ELO that you collected with your main -- and you may be matchmade against opponents stronger than you're ready to fight! SF4 and SFV are like this, and the Guilty Gear Strive "floor" system is basically like this.

In other games, you have ranks that are completely independent for each character. When you pick up a new character, you start out somewhere (either at the bottom rank, or maybe the game has a placement match system) and then each character fluctuates completely independently. You could be the greatest Ken player in the world, but that doesn't automatically give your Ryu any particular rank. Or in an extreme case, like Tekken Tag 2, you might have ranked up Lee to True Tekken God... but Violet (the same in-lore person with an almost identical moveset) is still at Beginner. In the case of starting new players at the bottom, this has the obvious downside that when a strong player tries out a new character, they'll be unintentionally smurfing, matched with players not nearly at their level.

A middle ground, is the Tekken 7 system, where your ranks between characters are correlated but not unified. In Tekken 7, when you reach certain points, it ranks up all your alternative characters to a lower point, too. If you reach the top ranks in Tekken 7, all of your other characters start at 24 Dan. This prevents the issues that one might have about the other two systems, but I think there are legit complaints that one might have about tuning this; I think in Tekken, if somebody is capable of reaching the top ranks, their fundamental skills and defense are going to be so strong that they'll just stomp everybody at 24th dan, so I'd argue that the ranks should be a bit more correlated and maybe it'd be more fair to rank up top-player characters another few dans.

I don't know of any other games that have this arrangement for ranks. Do you?
