Like the previous years, this is going under the read more or its the only thing that would be on anyone's dash ( and really, what else could you want to read?? ) but these two are eternally precious and deserve all the spotlight

Whereas only one year ago Soma had obliviously commemorated Seiroku's birthday while completely unaware of his true identity, he is now consciously celebrating the day regardless of the bloody trail it has left on the bushi world at large. Although his existence may have heralded doom and tragedy for the majority of the bushi; for Soma, and for the Date as well, Seiroku has been nothing short of a blessing.

A low hum leaves Soma at the thought, little consideration spared for his unfortunate childhood friends, and crimson eyes glance down at the sleeping figure in his arms when it begins to stir awake, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as he leans down to kiss the top of Seiroku's head in greeting. ❛ Good morning, ❜ Rather than give him space though, the red soul adjusts his position to gently press his forehead against Seiroku's, taking advantage of his sleepiness to burn this memory into his brain with each of its minuscule details. But even so, no matter how many times he's already had the opportunity to admire his beloved's beauty and no matter how perfect his memory might be; the sight in front of him always finds a way to portray Seiroku as even more beautiful than he can remember; a quite a commendable feat indeed when the one in front of him isn't even trying in this half-awake state.

❛ Slept well? ❜ The words are whispered softly enough to not irritate Seiroku's ears first thing in the morning, and Soma waits patiently, fondly staring at the yellow soul throughout his waking process before giving him a proper kiss. ❛ Any plans for today? ❜ Unlike last year, there is nothing urgent or monumental to attend to this time around, as had been the band-wide birthday cheer back then. Or at least, so should Seiroku be led to think. ❛ If not, do you want to come with me? There's something I haven't had the chance to show you yet. ❜ A carefully picked set of words, ones that don't imply a birthday gift, even though the surprises in question were very much prepared with this exact day in mind.

Once they leave the warmth of the futon and start preparing for the day ahead, Soma begins to linger near Seiroku, waiting for him to reach for his clothes and realize that atop his usual garments lies a brand new outfit, made out of Hi no Moto's finest materials and bearing a striking resemblance to the belt Soma had gifted him long ago. The outfit and its patterns are also in white and black, as the belt had been and as the yellow soul's wardrobe typically tends to be, but with tasteful bits of real gold sewn in here and there as well, meant to prove Seiroku's newfound prestige as a soon-to-be member of royalty. To harmonize with the gold, dozens of different accessories made of pure gold lay above the outfit too, from hairpins, to necklaces, bracelets, anklets and even face veils, for the other to choose from at his heart's content.

❛ Happy birthday, Seiroku. May you continue to have happiness for a long time, ❜ Soma states when he notices his love has laid eyes on the (first) gifts, the smile from before once again finding its way on his face as the general decides to re-enact what he'd done the year prior by stepping closer and reaching for Seiroku's hand in order to kiss it, reverence shown in how he carefully kisses each knuckle before settling on the back of his hand. If seen from any other person's perspective, it might well appear as though Seiroku is the royal between the two of them, and Soma the one vying for his affection. ❛ I love you. ❜ And it would seem the truth isn't too far off if the rare words he spews, alongside the admiring glint in Soma's eyes when he looks up, are of any indication.

Once they are both ready to leave, Soma unexpectedly offers his hand out for Seiroku to hold, much unlike in their previous year together and despite the potential to be perceived by other members of the band, and begins to calmly steer them towards the castle's main hall. There isn't anything out of the ordinary in his subsequent actions, except for when he brings the both of them to a halt next to the series of immense portraits made in his family's likeness and depicting every noteworthy member of the Date (be they past captains or otherwise considered valuable additions to the band thanks to their accomplishments), with the current captain having been the most recent addition... until not long ago. Right next to Soma's portrait now lies a recently painted portrait of Seiroku in the very clothes he was gifted earlier, the portrait's gold frame subtly tied to Soma's own. ❛ Not bad, right? ❜ Soma utters, looking up towards the painting as though Seiroku's presence on that wall is a given. ❛ I'd say the royal painter got everything right this time around. ❜

But it isn't long before Soma decides to continue their walk after only giving Seiroku enough time to take the portrait in, and proceeds to bring them to a part of the castle which had generally hosted industrial buildings... only for there to no longer be any in sight in that corner of the band. Instead, as perhaps one of Soma's most daring endeavors yet, lies a large, man-made swimming pond implemented specifically for Seiroku's leisure. It had been a test of both Soma's patience and the Date's technology, but at last they have managed to create something similar to a smaller artificial lake within the flying castle's grounds, thus sparing Seiroku from either having to postpone his visits to bodies of water, or being forced to leave the castle each time he wished to be near one. ❛ What do you think? I figured it'd be easier for you to relax if we didn't have to be floating around bodies of water for you to be able to take a swim. No fish to pester you here either, unless you want to add some. ❜

Soma glances up towards the sky after a while, and after the novelty wears off he gently pulls Seiroku in the direction of the plateau where their yearly bushi festival takes place; with their presence signaling the start of a fireworks show taking to the sky, alongside the bustle of the band members' loud birthday wishes for Seiroku. Soma squeezes Seiroku's hand then, and it isn't long until the rest of the members let the birthday man in on the secret they all already know. Namely, Seiroku's birthday is no longer to be considered simply a birthday anymore, but it has been officially decreed as a festival for the Date to celebrate for the rest of their history as a band, which becomes evident in the amount of people gathering for the festivities instead of working; and in the stalls scattered throughout the area. And unlike during the last year cheer, the Date members have positioned themselves evenly on two sides of the road, with a path left in between them for Soma and Seiroku to tread on, which blatantly leads up to the entrance of a building mainly used for ceremonies, where those willing have placed their own gifts for Seiroku. Though they may vary from silk clothes, to medical equipment, to homemade meals and so forth thanks to the difference in everyone's respective assets, what is clear is that everyone who has contributed to the pile, has done so from the heart.

Slowly sleep uncurls its grasp on the slumbering doctor, though it's never a particularly quick process. Certainly not when Soma is still with him and the body heat has him yearning to melt into it and never move again. ( Well, till he inevitable got restless. ) He gives a half-awake hum in response. " Good morning. " He replies, voice soft and a bit slurred with the part of sleep that still clings on. He smiles at the kiss though, and a soft little laugh, sweet and delicate as a small stream leaves him when he feels Soma's forehead against his. He presses back just a fraction, just to show that he is paying attention, that he's aware and the gesture is reciprocated in kind.

He's safe, and he's loved, so he can indulge in this peace he's craved at the root of his soul for so long. Soma seems entranced and Seiroku lifts his hand, fingers gently brushing over his jawline. " You're so handsome. " He murmurs, and he's said it before but he'll never stop saying it. He's always entranced by the other. It makes his chest tighten to think he once thought he'd never get this ever again. Once he would have accepted a sword through his chest and called it love even then. What more can you give to someone than your dying moments, to greet death not with defeat or hatred but a bleeding heart full of love and wishing them nothing but the best? You are my ending, even in violence. But he gets this and it is so much BETTER than what he had once expected.

" I always sleep well when you're here. " Seiroku nuzzles against Soma, tucking his lithe frame against the much broader one to indulge in just a few seconds longer. He grins into their kiss, blue eyes bright and alert to signal he's truly awake. " Mmm...Nothing in particular. " Seiroku answers with a small shrug. Maybe something with the medical team later, enjoy the day off the team had insisted he'd take. Chima had seemed particularly insistent. It might not be anything as big as last year, but Seiroku didn't need that. Never asked or demanded anything. The fact Soma was lazing about with him some was a gift in of itself. Curiosity grows in his chest at Soma's words, intrigued and invested in whatever it might be. " Sure. I'd love to. " He agrees easily, and decides that is enough motivation to encourage him to get up and playfully tug Soma up with him. Mostly only achieved when the red soul goes along with it.

His hair is always the first thing he fixes, brushing out glossy locks and pulling it back into his signature ponytail. It's only then he reaches to go for his usual outfit and STOPS when he sees that there's something new there. Many new things, actually. His fingers linger over the fabric, eyes drifting over the accessories with a smile. The style similarities certainly aren't missed by him and he knows better than to think it was an accident. If it hadn't been for the timeline, he might have otherwise believed it to be an especially long plan. He doesn't really need all this, but he's learned gift-giving seems to be a major love language and he's not inclined to comment otherwise when such care and effort has been made for him.

" You spoil me. " Affection lays heavy in his voice as he smiles and turns to Soma, a gentle shade of pink painting his fair features. " Thank you for this. " He says, voice a soft musical note. He instantly recognizes what Soma is doing, the memory unfurling warm and sweet in his mind as he watches Soma do it again with the same look of awed wonderment. This is his. This isn't a dream. This is his. His eyes widen a fraction at the words; he knows they are true in the depths of his heart even without them being spoken aloud. But it is a joy to hear them every time, rich and sweet. He bows his head with an almost shy giggle as he stands up, up, up onto his tippy toes to properly kiss Soma again. " I love you too. Every piece of my soul. "

It takes a moment to part and get dressed - his hesitation lingering on all the accessories he has to choose from. One of the golden face veils is a given, a bracelet, a hair piece- but his eyes linger on the necklaces for a long time. His scars still linger, when it had bene silver not gold that rested there. A collar of obedience and control, inflicting pain for the stubbornness of another. A reminder that he was a dog on a leash. The scars itch at the thought. There is no demand he wear this - there's far too many accessories for him to even wear all at once. But he wants to do this. Maybe no one else will understand the meaning or weight of it, but Seiroku will. He's not forced to stay, this is his choice. What is love if not a wild animal willingly trusting another? He picks up the lightest looking necklace and hesitates a second before he puts it on... And the itching stops. His scars are soothed under the cool metal and it isn't heavy like silver. He barely feels it and it feels like one more arrow in his side that he's pulled out. He looks at the mirror one more time to ensure he's satisfied before he turns to Soma.

The extended hand is a surprise - one he gladly takes and laces their fingers together. He doesn't know what's changed, he doesn't mind. He's content to follow after Soma as they walk together till they stop alongside the portraits. He remembers the awe the first time he'd seen it all, and he's spent countless hours studying, memorizing, learning. The history of the clan was as important as the future ; something to be valued and respected. He doesn't expect to see his own face. The days of Seiroku having been someone important in the world had died the day the oni and demon metal had arrived. From the very top into the pit of despair. He stares at his portrait in open shock, every paint stroke perfect and flawless. He looks....beautiful. Of course Seiroku knows he's attractive, but that's different. This is beautiful in the way nature is, in something that is felt. And to think he's on the wall with everyone else that's so important. He wants to ask is this how you see me? but swallows instead. " Not bad? I think the painter deserves a little more credit. " He manages to find his voice with a smile. " It's gorgeous. " He should have known outfits and accessories would never be all from Soma. It's still overwhelming how much he is gifted, and everything no matter how small or big always earns the most genuine thanks - never taken for granted nor greed ever present.

He allows himself to be led again, wondering just what Soma has planned. It's not a part of the castle he recognizes as much. Familiar - but one he's only been to here and there. But the buildings are all gone. Seiroku gasps, the veil doing nothing to his his open-mouthed shock at the glittering light of the pool. " How- You- " Seiroku's rarely caught without a coherent remark, but every though and question stumbles over themselves into nothing particularly coherent. It doesn't matter. His happiness is OBVIOUS, when his bright blue eyes rival the very sun or the most perfect blue diamond. He squeezes Soma's hand with a breathless laugh of admiration and shock. He can't fathom how long this must have taken. He feels like a child again, giddy with joy. " What do I think? " He gives an incredulous noise. " That it's beautiful. And that I am going to be a lot easier to convince to relax and take proper breaks. " He adds with a genuine laugh - he's gotten BETTER but there's still times where he's stubborn. " That is true, it is much easier now. I can't believe you managed this - " He pauses only a fraction of a second before " - actually, i can believe it. " Because it's Soma. He hasn't stopped smiling and his cheeks hurt but it's perfect. No one else is around - so Seiroku tugs Soma down a bit closer to his level and gently lifts the face veil to press another kiss to Soma's lips. " Thank you. We're definitely coming here later. Or tomorrow. " It's a statement he intends to be cemented as fact. He smiles and affectionately bumps their noses together before turning back to soak in the awe of the water a little longer. The joy is still flowing in his veins but it settles, no longer a frantic rapid of emotion but a gentle current weaving through his chest.

Intrigue grows when he sees them heading for the plateau, and then he has his answer. The fireworks catch his eyes for the first few before he lowers his eyes again to greet the birthday congratulations that he answers with a smile. His throat feels tight with emotion and he can feel the tears at the corners of his eyes. Happiness lingers in the air so intense that he can practically taste it like a delicious sugary confection. Everyone had known. Everyone had remembered. There's so many stalls and so many people - and that's what he cares about most. It's not the gifts ( though he treasures them all ) , it's not the fireworks, it's not about it being his day. It's about having so many people around celebrating and enjoying each other's company. THAT'S what is most precious to Seiroku. His free hand lifts to delicately wipe away at the tears in his eyes ( and he spots the medical team with knowing grins on their faces that has him swallow back a laugh. ) " I didn't expect happy tears to be a yearly tradition too. " He whispers to Soma with a trembling laugh - but his voice is rich and warm and happy. It touches his heart to see the heartfelt gifts everyone has given him ; not because of what the gifts ARE so much as what they REPRESENT. Love, acceptance, a place where he finally, finally, belongs. He turns to everyone with a shout of thanks and a beaming smile, his chest so warm and full when everyone cheers that he'd almost fear it would explode. He turns his head just slightly as everything really picks up to try to hide the few more tears that escape, but his smile had never once faltered or faded. No, this is simply perfect.

Dorm Room Dancing (Food Wars)

Heyo! I hadn’t realized it, but I made this dabble for @jumiii and completely forgot about it T-T My apologies friend! I hope you like it, delayed as it is!

When Takuma walked through the door of his and Soma’s shared apartment, he smelled home.

Whiffs of garlic and tomatoes roasting together harmoniously encased him, taking him back to his family’s estate, right in their kitchen back in Italy. His father’s guiding words entwined with laughter as he and Isami learned to make homemade pasta. The sound of their small radio sitting in an open window, a woman singing of an old love to a somber yet beautiful musical track. Memories Takumi could never forget as he walked towards the source of the smell.

He found Soma working away, bandana pulled across his forehead as he stirred what looked to be some sort of red sauce. He was a picture of calm, swaying to a song on the radio. When Takumi walked closer, he could hear Soma singing along under his breath.

“~Track suits and red wine, movies for two. We’ll take off our phones, And we’ll turn off our shoes~”

His voice was low and raspy sounding, clearly lost in memory as he set the sauce to simmer. He moved on to work on what looked to be homemade bread, gathering a bowl of garlic butter and coating the slices delicately. Clumps of fresh pasta sat by on the floured counter, ready to be tossed into boiling water towards the end.

He was making one of the first dishes Takumi ever made for them.

Takumi felt his chest begin to flutter.

“~We’ll play nintendo, though I always lose. ‘Cause you watch the TV, while I’m watching you~”.” He smiled as he sang, placing the bread onto a tray to cook.

Takumi leaned against the doorframe, smiling behind his hand as he watched his boyfriend go about. His heart was pounding a thousand miles a minute as he felt himself fall for the redhead all over. Even after being together for two years, he couldn’t help but be smitten over the smallest of things.

“~There’s not many people, I’d honestly say, I don’t mind losing to.~” Soma turned, stumbling over his words when he saw Takumi. Recovering quickly, he slowly made his way over, taking the blonde’s hand in his and pulling him close, carrying on the song. “But there’s nothing, like doing nothing, with you~”

Before he knew it, they were dancing. Soma’s voice carried them through the lyrics as he gently twirled Takumi about, grinning at the permanent blush staining Takumi’s cheeks. He was surprisingly good at it, guiding them around the room with effortless grace, eyes never breaking away as he sang along with the sweet words filling the room. They held so much warmth and love in them it was almost overwhelming, but Takumi wouldn’t look away.

“~You could be dancing on tabletops, wearing high heels. Drinking until the world spins like a wheel. But tonight our apartment has so much appeal, who needs stars? We’ve got a roof~” Soma pulled him into his chest as the song reached its ending, resting his forehead against Takumi’s, arms coming around his waist, rocking him gently as he finished the song. “~There is nothing, like doing nothing, with you~”

As the song finished, he leaned in gently, capturing the other’s lips with his own. Warmth radiated through Takumi’s entire being, curling his toes and leaving him feeling breathless. He returned the kiss just as gently, wrapping his arms loosely around the taller boy’s neck as he melted within his arms.

When they pulled away, both flushed and smiling, Soma gently reached up, brushing his thumb against the other’s cheek. 

“Welcome home, love.”

so, thinking about this, i wanted fluff, but my brain hit me with character death and grief and shit (but not agni. never agni.) with like. so little sebagni here. so. if i wrote a short fic about this it'd be fairly simple:

(one rambly semi-narrated idea with bad dialogue, coming right up!)

Imagine one of those "everything goes smoothly contrary to the intense and unbearable pain of canon" AUs. Sebastian still ends up eating our favourite blue boy's soul, but their relationship was just overall better because this version of Seb is not as much of a dick. The secret twin drama resolves itself WITH NO DEATHS and everyone lives a nice little life, vengeance is achieved, contracts are fulfilled, souls are consumed, all that good stuff.

Even years later, Sebastian keeps his current name and appearance ("Just for a moment," he probably says, "I liked that one, so there's no need to leave it behind, yet.") and settles down with the greatest man and softest husband, Agni, in the cliché little house everyone imagines when they think of calm, happy days, away from the troubles of a conflicted life. They're the grossly smitten couple that never moves past the honeymoon phase, even though their version of it is not endless passion, but more of a consistent, certain and reliable kind of love. Overall adorable, as these two are.

Their daily life is all the nice shit you could ever imagine. Soma visits on (most) weekends, they get to be annoying parents with him, and it's great. Really. Even though it does, sometimes, remind Sebastian of another young boy he had gotten used to caring for, and of how empty the house can feel, and of how much he misses days that were less peaceful, less pleasant, and other things he can't find the words for because he never bothered to think about it when the brat was still alive. Because yes, all of this is nice, but grief isn't something that ever goes away when you're not even used to loving things enough to miss them when they're gone.

(also i love making characters suffer in ways they cannot ever fix. i'm mean like that.)

So the routine has one more step. Regular visits to the Phantomhive manor, and to the neat little stone in what i assume would be a backyard-turned-graveyard (or is it cemetary... i do not know), become a thing.

(and this is where we get ridiculously dramatic and mostly one-sided dialogue! agni is my fave but i never let him say a word istg, my man's a dearly beloved plot device)

During one particular visit, Agni notices that his trash demon's eyes simply won't leave the building, rather than the gravestone, which is unusual. (or as unusual as it can be, considering that there's no real habit here, since the only thing these visits have in common is that they're definitely not fun! like, not fun at all. agni's out there being a supportive husband but this is depressing as fuck)

(anyway basically he's like, "what's up" and seb is like *dramatic pause* bc he's just Like That and eventually he actually opens his damn mouth)

"Human life is so ridiculously fragile," he starts, and his tone is so casual it makes it sound like a boring scientific fact that has no incidence on actual people's lives, "I should know better than to let it affect me. Yet so many of them have. And most of them belong, or belonged in that manor."

"Most of them?"

"Not all of them, obviously. Don't you know?"

(and here we would have some comment about seb's completely ridiculous tendency to be the sassiest little bitch at the worst possible times, and about how that cheeky little "don't you know?" is not as ckeey as it should be, actually, and agni thinks he kind of looks like he's about to turn into a sobbing mess right then and there, even though he knows demons can't cry, but before he gets to voice any of that concern, seb decides to hit him with more dramatic dialogue.)

"You're my favourite. And I think you will always hold that title, as a boring old man, or as worthlessly precious ashes on a shelf," he rushes through some of the words, taken by an uncharacteristic agitation, hands held out in front of him in some meaningless gesture, "and even just as you, right now, listening to me like you always do, because for some odd reason you still love me."

"And I'll love you forever."

It's all Agni says, because sometimes people only need someone to listen and to remind them of simple things to soothe complex pains.

This man is a literal sweetheart. He wouldn't even think of teasing you for being shy, if anything, he gives you some space if you need it.

He is definitely attracted to your kindness, it is something that he values, along with loaylty.

The domestic vibes I'm getting right now, omg.

He would love you even more if you got along with Soma, even though he can act more spoiled than Ciel and Alois combined sometimes.

Even if he had a hard day, he finds the energy to take care of you. Agni would love to do stuff for you, like cooking or washing your hair.

But he loves it even more when you do those things together. Basically anything that you like doing, cooking, tending to the garden, he'd love it if you could do it together.

Although he owes Soma his life, you give him something that he had never had in his life, warmth. And not just any kind of warmth, the kind that only true love can give.

He doesn't want to lose that and so you quickly become his number one, along with Soma.

The young prince is so supportive of you two, just saying. He loves to hear Agni talk about what you two do, because he loves seeing Agni happy. He also may or may not scold him to be good to you from time to time (only jokingly though, because it's clear as day that that man is smitten with you).

It is most likely that Agni has never been ice or roller skating, but he wouldn't be opposed to trying. He'd fall down a few times before getting used to it. Once he does it comes surprisingly easy to him.

He would love watching you ice skate, he thinks you look so graceful, like a ballerina.

If you fall down or get hurt, he gets really worried, please reassure him that you're fine.

I don't think he'd be too into dates since you're spending so much time together as it is, but apart from the skating, he would also like trips to nature, picnics in fields, mushroom picking, making flower crowns (he'd definitely blush if you put a flower crown on his head out of the blue, bby)

He is in awe of your choice of profession. It's one thing to be kind to humans, but a whole other to do the same for animals. Agni thinks it is much harder, since you can't easily articulate to them that you want to help and that makes him admire you even more.

Others I can see you with: Finnian - I think that he is very much like Agni in many ways, so I'm not gonna repeat myself and tell you some other things that I think would apply for Finny. You could actually teach him how to tend to the garden so it doesn't die. The poor boy is always afraid of hurting you with his inhuman strength and would train in secret with the other servants to learn to control it better. He would be more into taking you out on dates, if the young master gave him permission, he'd love ice skating, but would be terrified of roller skating, because whoa, there are wheels on his feet and omg what does he do now?? But his favourite would definitely be trips to nature, it makes him feel even more free than in the Phantomhive mansion.

okay so i’m cheating right off the bat and decided to group these two in one category bc they’re like conceptually the same CG lmao. i made a post before about loving instructors getting furious at people trying to hurt you in the sunset. and the fact that two of my absolute fave LIs of all time get these gorgeous fury CGs makes me infinitely happy alskdfls. the sad thing is that there’s an error in soma’s route so the CG doesn’t actually appear in-game...  anyway you know i love seeing cool love interests get mad so these two CGs are a perfect depiction of that.

who doesn’t love this scene and CG!! and the in-game version as well where his eyes are open bc he was surprised. i love it so much. that entire ending was so good, with the mc being the Best Senpai Ever? and she tries to blow his socks off with a kiss but then he just grabs her butt and goes in deeper? we stan a tie-grabbing mc. i only wish there was a CG for that elevator kiss too in the sequel(?).

honestly i love all of goto’s s3 CGs bc they are all just so pretty and i love the one as well where tsugaru is joking about him and usa being a couple and goto gets pissed. but this one is just so... pure and soft???? it’s so rare to see goto all relaxed and smiley and i just love it soooo much. also does anyone else find that his smile in this CG is so similar to chiba’s smiling sprite? ughhh this is so freaking cute i physically can’t look at it for too long otherwise i get overwhelmed with feelings. oh and also that cat is so weird looking lmao

2. please... let me be with you

one of my favourite moments of all time. look how stunned kaga looks (but also... how pretty is he here... and how pretty is she.... season 3 CGs are so top quality). the fact that she’s hopped up on painkillers but they’re just fading off so she’s already starting to feel pain again and kaga is already kind of angsting over everything that happened on the case and then tsugaru is taking her home while kaga can’t even speak to her bc of office rules. and she just runs back to the office by herself even tho she’s already starting to feel the pain in her gunshot wound and just bursts into the office and yanks his cigarette out of his mouth and kisses him? and says even if you don’t want me, i want to be with you. honestly this whole moment is like freaking kdrama level dramatic and romantic and i love it so much. it’s like... the perfect moment combined with the prettiest CG. kaga’s pov of this scene makes it EVEN BETTER because he’s literally smitten with her, like he wants her so badly and then she just magically appears in front of him and kisses the life out of him, just as he was thinking about how much he needs her. right at the moment when he’s feeling the most empty, the most hollow, like his entire career in public safety amounted to nothing, she comes back to him. and then there’s that line of his, where he talks about love so fierce that he can’t breathe around it filling his chest and honestly it gets me every single time (also bc i can relate to that feeling lmao) but basically kaga/mc is my favourite couple and this moment and CG are just like... exactly what i love the most about them as a pair. ALSO i love her hair and that gold pin hahaha i want it. 

1.5 did i or did i not say you were forbidden from acting rashly?

how could i not include this one as a bonus? i’ve been in love with this CG from the very first time i laid eyes on it back in 2018. no context (at the time i think soma’s graduation hadn’t even come out in l365 so we hadn’t even seen his short hair sprite in the intl app), no idea what was even happening in this scene, and yet i was immediately struck by the dangerous look in his eye and that little smile, and also just like... getting to see him in a tshirt and hoodie is so rare? i’m p certain that outfit is just recycled ayumu sprite’s casual clothes. anyway, knowing the context behind this CG makes it 10000x better for me. i wrote this in my unpublished review of soma’s battlefield route but i genuinely believe we’re seeing this CG from his mc’s eyes and that’s what tokito really looked like in that moment - with soma’s face, his hair, his expressions, his hands, his voice. our poor, sweet mc had been suffering for so long to the point where even toru and ayumu noticed that she hadn’t smiled in forever and were trying to cheer her up (and momose too later!!). for me, this CG represents the absolutely heartbreaking sense of delusion that soma’s mc feels in this route, and the way that she keeps trying so hard to project soma onto tokito because of her grief. i genuinely felt like in that moment, she physically saw soma coming to her rescue, like her desires manifest into a delusion. also, this CG comes at an absolutely amazing time bc we had been deprived of seeing soma for like 60% of the route and then we get this CG and suddenly everything is better for a short moment, and then everything goes back to normal and you really get a sense of how upsetting life has been for his mc.

1. come now, love. tell me what you desire

i love this CG. i love it so so so so so much. firstly, i love the look of it. both soma and his mc just look so attractive?? soma’s muscles?? in his shoulders and back especially?! his mc has commented on his shoulderblades and back muscles before which have been honed through kendo practice so i’m very happy to get to see them. the actual text says that the mc is naked but here she’s still wearing a sundress, but she just looks so pretty and like she’s feeling unbelievably good? anyway i scream bc even soma’s hands look good and they still kept that one piece of hair that he has that sticks up lmao what’s gravity anyway? anyway, beyond the sensuality of the image (and also his tongue... and his sweat...), there’s just so much meaning behind it? like yes, it’s very hot and sensual and the dialogue that goes with this scene is unbelievably sexy, but this scene is just super meaningful bc it’s part of their recovery as a couple. they’re on this secret holiday in okinawa and they’re reconnecting after their trauma and idk it’s just so intimate. we really get to see the mc from soma’s eyes and we get to see how he is the only one who can see her weakness behind that strong face of hers, but also how he sees her strength in recovery? the way he describes that scene where she’s in this gorgeous white swimsuit with a sheer coverup and then picks a brown swim float so she can sit atop it on the waves and say “don’t i look like a doughnut?” despite having a literal near-death experience in the sea not too long before honestly had me falling head over heels in love with her, and it really made me understand exactly what he loves about her, and how much he just adores her. anyway this is me gushing over that special story, but what i mean is that the ending of his battlefield in combination with this special story sets up the beginning of soma and his mc’s healing as a couple, and it culminates in this scene. soma is kind of similar to kaga in the sense that they both actually demonstrate their feelings the most honestly through physical means, and here you can just see how palpable the desperation is. they desire each other so intensely and intimately and having this moment for the two of them to share is so significant for their recovery. you can just see how much soma needs to show her that he’s here, he’s really, physically here with her, and he’ll never leave her alone ever again, and he’s so sorry for all the pain she’s had to go through. you can see the way he’s telling her that with his body and with the way he talks to her and is just so himself in bed. there are really parallels between their first night together and this scene (mostly like... him asking her to tell him what she wants lol) and it just makes me so EMOTIONAL.

i said it was in no particular order but i just need to say that this one is my actual favourite bc it has EVERYONE. and look at how gorgeous they all look.... every single one of them with their hair pushed back ;alskdjfalsk WHO??? LOOK AT THEIR SUFFERING FACES JUST LOOK. and you just KNOW that soma is going to suffer the same fate oh sweet mercy this is like “famous last pictures” level of good. also they’re all wearing new clothes which i love sooooo much. i wanna see ayumu in that orange sweater more often and also army green shirt kaga with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms with that look on his face. have i ever been more in love? no.

So now she’s trying to get strength back to take his castle over. Doesn’t know that her adoptive brother and his 2 idiots are trying to do the same but hey, she has to wait another 300 years, and a possessed best friend later to finally take him out for now. Straight up she gets wasted in 1999 when Julius finally kills the bastard. Does she know of Soma? Yes. But she’s sure her brother’s got him covered. 

Skull: It’s a 50/50 chance she was either born with it or as an infant she was turned and doesn’t remember it. Doesn’t stop her from eating garlic. 

Wilted Rose: Most of her relationships at that point are platonic but when she finds a tired as hell grim reaper, she’s smitten. 

Wine: She’s drank blood from his own brother, eyes not moving from dead eye stare. But to be fair, he was wanting to hurt himself and Koi was hungry so you can see where that went. Or she just eats the rawest of meats and everyone is concerned bc she isn’t like super super pale and one of her fangs are ingrown (She still has it, but it’s not aligned properly with her other fang) so she just looks like she has a moe snaggletooth

Blood: He would except he has no fucking blood. So she feeds off of whoever consents, sometimes not consenting but they were assholes who deserved it.

Further proving that I’m into more than just sports anime with this rec even though i used to say say that this show is a sports anime and the sport is cooking however it doesn’t have the same cliches that i like in a sports anime¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So even though i said it doesn’t have the same sports anime feel that i like it’s still good cause it’s not a sports anime. And this is supposed to be a description of the show, but can i just say i love the girls in this show( not fond of megumi but she grows on me). And usually i do not like anime girls they are a bit annoying to me. That being said I’m in love with the girls in this show ughhh(´ཀ`). Their personalities are so in your face, bitchy and ‘I’m better than you’ I’ve never been more smitten(⁎⁍̴̛ᴗ⁍̴̛⁎). Wow I’m realizing i just hate seeing girls be weak and pushovers and that why i don’t like megumi anyways back to the show our main character boy is ray of annoying sunshine and i love him for it i love positive characters who make people feel better by being themselves and that’s what he is. And the show is about cooking got a lotta ecchi scenes it’s very built into the nature of the show so if you mind anime titties and borderline ahegao faces this may not be your speed buuuuut i really think it can be looked past as just being an extreme representation of the feeling they get as they eat which is what it is.

Fall Anime 2019 Part 4: also, he has a gun for a head

Beastars

So here’s the CG anime that everyone for some reason decided way in advance would be the best show of the season, more or less by default. I was very skeptical of this for a multitude of reasons. First of all, that is a bad name for a show and you can’t convince me otherwise. It’s actually even worse because you’re supposed to write it in all caps, but I refuse. Second, it has a terribly on the nose conceit in which all sorts of animals live together in a high school setting and it’s all metaphorical ‘n shit. The main character is a wolf but get this, he’s actually all sensitive and quiet! Yeah, this is definitely rated D for Deep. And finally it’s by Orange, the CG studio that got an inordinate amount of acclaim for making Houseki no Kuni, the show that everyone thinks looks great and finally made CG anime worthwhile (actual real fact: HnK does not look great most of the time and CG anime was worthwhile well before it). 

But enough about my preconceptions since Beastars is... pretty good, actually. If you ignore the setting, which is indeed terribly on the nose. And there’s not much else to say about the story so far besides it. However, it looks significantly better than Houseki no Kuni because it actually has really good character animation throughout instead of a one-minute action scene with flashy spinny camera tricks every other episode. The directing’s strong too, even if the show conspicuously mainly consists of obvious manga panels. I’m still not too hot on the animal stuff but the general writing seems to be sufficiently competent it would work simply on a character level. So I don’t love it, but it seems solid enough to see if it goes somewhere with its “Zootopia but also Beverly Hills 90210 but also they eat each other sometimes″ plot.

Rifle is Beautiful

Remember the whole “anime about some assorted anime girls joining a club doing an oddly specific activity” thing? This is another one of those, and now it’s about air rifle sports shooting. Except it’s not about air rifle sports shooting because that’s apparently way too violent, so they use rifles that look like exactly like air rifles but are actually based on lasers or really bright flashlights (they can’t keep their bullshit straight between scenes, sorry) instead. I just don’t think “girls doing activities” anime should blatantly misrepresent their subject matter like that, you know? With the possible exception of idol anime that is, ain’t nobody who wants to hear about that shit. Apart from that it’s nothing special, so if you are really into air rifles and wish to watch an anime that’s not about those, knock yourself out. It goes through a whole “club needs 5 members” arc in the first half of the first episode, so I really can’t say where it goes next. Nowhere much, I would guess.

Oh right, there’s one more thing: They frequently render the bodies in CG and the heads in traditional drawings, and they do it every time when they’d actually have to draw a rifle otherwise. It’s a weird effect that I think I haven’t seen anywhere else before, and it’s not great but also not terrible. And it’s the most interesting thing about the entire show.

Kabukicho Sherlock

“Let’s take a bunch of public domain characters and put them into a hip modern setting” seems to be its own genre at the moment, and not only because the BBC did that with S. Holmes, Esq. already. Obviously this show is influenced by that (besides other public domain namedroppers like Bungou Stray Dogs), mostly in Watson and his relationship with Sherlock, but Sherlock-san is rather different here; he’s neither the classic Victorian bohemian nor the abrasive sociopath of the BBC version, and tends more towards a bumbling 90s pop culture version of autism and/or general wackiness here. These two are surrounded by a bunch of campy transvestites for some reason, and I’m not quite sure whether I’m supposed to find this particular stereotype offensive or empowering this week, but it sure is annoying. And it has the same character designer as Joker Game, so if you like chiseled, angular anime men, you’re in for a treat here - even if they tend to wear a lot of makeup and dresses sometimes. I don’t know man, it seems sort of okay-ish for the most part but it’s neither as funny as they think, nor as weird as they think, nor is the murder of the week intriguing at all. Oh yeah, he’s hunting noted public domain character Jack the Ripper. Because of course he is.

 Shin Chuuka Ichiban!

I am told this is the sequel to episode 19 of a 52-episode anime TV show from 1997. Okay. I am also told to not dare watch this without the important setup therein, which makes me think I should pay less attention to what I’m told because understanding Shin Chuuka Ichiban and its backstory is not hard at all. Kid is superawesome cooking champion in ancient China and goes around clowning on lesser cooks, got it. It’s not a complicated setup and it’s not a complicated genre either: This seems to be mostly about sick shounen cooking duels. Besides the setting, the main difference between this and Shokugeki no Soma seems to be that SnS goes for ridiculous and Chuuka Ichiban goes for epic - which is to say that it fancies itself emotional as well. Apart from that it’s what you’d expect from a cooking shounen, big moves, big reactions, huge twists and so on. One notable thing is that this show looks really, really nice. Production I.G seems to be establishing a sideline in taking stuff from the 90s and updating it with smoother animation and shinier lighting, while keeping the overall look intact; They did it for Mahoujin Guru Guru, and this looks much the same. Still, I’m just fundamentally not really interested in what appears to be a very straightforward cooking shounen from the 90s.

Assassins Pride

Straight from the Department of Chuuni, we have this light novel masterpiece about a cool as fuck teenage assassin who teleports behind u and nothin personells fools all day. He then meets a princess he’s supposed to off but just kinda decides not to, probably because she seems to be smitten by his m’lady act. Now he has to use his sick skillz to keep them both alive. It’s awful and terrible and no good and also kind of adorable. This truly is the most 13 AND A HALF MOM years old anime in a while, and it’s not even isekai! The writing’s just so amateurish and corny you can’t help but smile when princesses exposit their backstory for no reason while being accosted by pumpkin monsters (without knowing that Awessassin McCooldude happens to be listening in, which is certainly convenient). Or when the episode ends with the man just reading the synopsis of the show out again, in case you were too fascinated by this plot to pay attention to what it’s about. Yeah I’m not going to watch this in a thousand years, but it sure made me chuckle. Your mileage may vary.

Mugen no Juunin - Immortal

Speaking of 𝔱𝔥𝔞𝔱 𝔫𝔦𝔫𝔢𝔱𝔦𝔢𝔰 𝔢𝔡𝔤𝔢, another anime adaptation of Blade of the Immortal appeared! You know, the manga for the cultured and historically minded guro fan. The first episode of Blade of the Immortal runs with this and is an arthouse production that someone most definitely directed the shit out of. I don’t think I’ve seen this much directing since, well, Sarazanmai, but “Ikuhara amounts of directing” is pretty much the idea here. And most of the time it even works! The quickly edited, disorienting style gives episode 1 a feeling closer to horror than to a cool swordmen action show, and that really brings out the best in the material, which is grotesque splatter bordering on the comical - It’s somehow a better Junji Ito anime than the actual Junji Ito anime. I think it tries too hard in a few places, but at least it does try.

But then I watched the second episode and that one’s a fairly conventional splatter-comedy swordin’ anime. I am not at all pleased with this development. The third episode was better again and seemed to split the difference between 1 and 2, even if it mostly uses the tricky editing to save on effort in the action –  I would much prefer actually readable fights and the wacky mannerisms in the more psychological stuff, thank you very much. Based on episode 1 I thought we might have something special here, but as of episode 3 I’d already merely call it pretty decent. I guess I’ll still stick with it but man, that’s a real bummer.

No Guns Life

No Guns Life is a neo-noir thriller about a guy who has a gun for a head. That’s fuckin rad and exactly the kind of silliness I am totally down for. He also has a gun for a hand, and there’s also some battle nun’s who carry revolvers with two cylinders, so in short I think the title is false advertising. This sounds very wacky (and it is), but it also takes its noir very seriously, down to details more wannabe neo-noirs tend to neglect (like being set right after a big war). The look and feel is pretty excellent, with sharp design and high-contrast artwork, and the music goes all in on the moody saxophone as you’d expect. And there’s some really adorable “look mom, I’m writing” stuff about how Man With Gun For A Head really “needs someone to pull his trigger” and so on (which is, as the astute reader might remember, at the back of his head). It feels like a throwback but then I can’t really think of many 80s/90s shows like this, so it’s actually more like the sort of faux-retro idea Trigger/Imaishi would come up with on a lark. Trigger/Imaishi would, of course, make a far worse anime out of it, so it’s all good. Well, it has some pacing problems and as always it’s a fine line between amusingly camp and not so amusingly camp anymore, but No Guns Life seems to have enough real qualities that it can probably stand on its own even when its conceptual gimmick eventually doesn’t suffice anymore. I give it a two gun’s up.

Hoshiai no Sora / Stars Align

And finally, here’s an anime about middle schooler softboys playing a tennis just as soft as themselves, while being henpecked by the elites on the girl’s team. This is not an “actual” sports anime though: for starters, it’s not based on some shounen manga and is an anime original with quite some staff pedigree instead. It’s also more of a character drama that already goes to some surprisingly real places by the end of episode 1, reminiscent of the recent and quite good Run with the Wind. Furthermore, it looks delicious, with minimalist but distinctive and varied character designs and animation that’s both extremely detailed for a TV anime and also not trying to shove that fact into your face with flashy stunt cuts. In short, this show seems very simple at first glance but every aspect of it just oozes quality. If nothing else, it’s already worth watching just for the excellent ending sequence where the characters show off their “best” dance moves and the chunky student council president dunks on everyone. This one caught me by surprise and it’s an easy pick for most promising show of the season.

About a year and a half ago, I graduated university and went through a very hard period of doing nothing (*coughdepressioncough*). So my good friend sat me down and forced me to watch the Soul Eater anime. I then became CONSUMED and I devoured the manga, then all the fics, then secretly but not so secretly stalked all the good people that I now have the privilege of talking to on Discord. 

Now, I didn’t read or write AT ALL after I finished the Trial of Hell that is thesis, and I felt really out of sorts of myself after graduation. he’s so smitten. what can i say? every time he tells her to stop being so adorable my heart just melts a little more. goto is so sincere and adorable and wholesome like a puppy. sometimes he is just so honest about this kind of thing and i’m like ?!?!?!? GOTO STOPPPPPP IT’S TOO CUTE. he may be known as public safety’s ace but the reality is that he is public safety’s sweetheart. 

2. soma

he calls her cute all the time because he’s also smitten. and also has a lot of physical reactions to her if you know what i mean. sometimes i just think of the sexual tension between them when they face off in the dojo. i’m getting off track but the point is that he calls her cute and pretty and beautiful and adorable and lovely all the time but ranks second after goto because most of the time he’ll tell her she’s cute not just bc he sincerely thinks so but rather to tease a reaction out of her. 

3. kurosawa

toru calls her cute all the time but he’s insincere. he would call a brick with blush on cute. he ranks third because while the quantity of his compliments and calling her cute might be high, the quality is mostly low value. the only time his comments have worth is when he’s actually serious but then he rarely comments on trivial things when he’s being serious anyway. 

bonus 3.5 tsugaru

likely to call her cute all the time but most likely (1) sarcastically (2) to mess with her. his compliments are both backhanded and as low value as kurosawa’s. 

4. ishigami

ishigami is the opposite of toru in that the quantity of him calling her cute may be lower but the quality is top notch. every time ishigami calls her cute, it’s so deserving and precious that my heart races. it’s like a rare treasure that i have to keep close to my heart. 

5. namba

namba ranks below ishigami because while he may comment on her cuteness slightly more often, the meaning is often ambiguous. does he mean cute as in genuinely cute? or cute in a childish way? sometimes i wonder if namba himself knows. 

6. shinonome

okay let’s be real, he spends so much brain energy thinking about it but the issue here is that he never says it out loud and sometimes can’t even find it in him to admit it to himself honestly. you might find 0 compliments (maybe 1 or 2 coded positive comments) in a regular route and then read his pov and find him being head over heels at least 7 times. 

7. kaga

don’t know if he’s ever called her cute ever. i mean he is very obviously extremely attracted to her and loves her So Much but the most you’ll ever get out of him is “not bad” or “your only redeeming feature is your softness” or “looks like this mutt has finally learned to be obedient” and that’s as close as he’ll ever get to verbally expressing any sort of compliment towards her. if i ever did a ranking hlitf love interests by physical expressions of attraction tho...
