the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible
#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order#at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers#90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies”#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent#like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries#but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate#and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something#cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare#and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity#and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media#and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons#and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators#instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period#anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value”#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives#so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world#(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin#oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value#and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the#important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

Alex Griffing at Mediaite:
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) sounded the alarm yet again on former President Donald Trump’s fitness to return to the White House after he shared a call for her to be tried for treason. Trump shared a Truth Social post on Sunday that called for Cheney to be tried for treason in televised military tribunals. “ELIZABETH LYNNE CHENEY IS GUILTY OF TREASON, RETRUTH IF YOU WANT TELEVISED MILITARY TRIBUNALS,” read the post that the presumptive Republican nominee “retruthed.” Cheney shared a screenshot of Trump’s post and commented, “Donald – This is the type of thing that demonstrates yet again that you are not a stable adult—and are not fit for office.”
On Sunday, Trump also called for top Democrats and some Republicans including his former Vice President Mike Pence to be jailed. Trump shared a post that read, “THEY SHOULD BE GOING TO JAIL ON MONDAY NOT STEVE BANNON! WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE!” The post then included a large image of various House Jan. 6th Committee members as well as Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Pence, President Joe Biden, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump has long called to jail Cheney, including in March when he posted, “SHE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO OUR COUNTRY! SHE ILLEGALLY DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE. UNREAL!!!”
The claim that Cheney and the January 6th Committee withheld evidence stems from a March 8th “exclusive” and roundly debunked article from The Federalist’s editor-in-chief Mollie Hemingway titled, “Liz Cheney, January 6 Committee Suppressed Exonerating Evidence Of Trump’s Push For National Guard.”
Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney sounds the alarm after Fascist Convicted Felon Donald Trump retruthed a post on Truth Social calling for her to face a “televised military tribunal”.

Extras came in from the library, and setting aside that we should start calling influencers ego-kickers, given that the Committee for Morphological Standards is an international body, has banned black hair, and seems to prefer "olive" skin and straight textured hair, I'm wondering if the nose Aya was born with is really that big or if she just hasn't had it surgically altered to look whiter.

As a frequent "ugh, fanon," person it's not that I don't like non-canonical character designs or interpretations as a concept. I love unique and creative ideas about fictional characters that are informed by canon but diverge from it in interesting ways that build upon the original vision! I almost never see this in fanon.

Senator Bernie Sanders Announces Vote Next Week to Block Weapons to Israel
In the week of Nov 18-22, for the first time in U.S. history, there will be a Senate vote to block weapons sales to Israel. On November 13 2024, Senator Sanders announced a Senate vote to stop $20 billion in U.S. weapon sales to Israel. (Source: Senator Sander's official government website)
If you are a U.S. citizen with representatives in the Senate, then you can spend 3 minutes to tell your state's two senators to cosponsor Senate Joint Resolutions numbers 111 through 116, to Disapprove the Military Sale of Weapons to Israel.
You can find the contact information for your two senators' offices on the official senate.gov website. A phone call takes 3 minutes. Alternatively, you could choose any one of the links below to send scripted messages. Be prepared to give your full name and mailing address to your senators' offices so they can verify you. Phone calls (including voicemails) tend to be more prioritized, and you can call daily. Emails and fax messages also help.
Call Your State's Senators
🍊 Jewish Voice For Peace: Tell the Senate to Block Bombs to Israel
🍊 U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights: Stop Arming Israel
Email Your State's Senators
🍊 IfNotNow: Say No to $20 Billion in Weapons to Israel
🍊 FCNL: No New Weapons to Israel!
🍊 Jewish Voice for Peace: Tell Senate to Block Bombs to Israel
🍊 MPower Action: Support Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Resolutions to Block Arms to Israel

Sample: very short phone call script
Hi, my name is [MY FULL NAME], from [MY MAILING ADDRESS].
I'm calling to ask Senator [SENATOR NAME] to support Senate Joint Resolutions numbers 111 through 116, to block 20 billion dollars in weapons to the Israeli military.
This issue is important to me as your constituent. I want our country to support peace and rebuilding. Thank you for listening to what I have to say.
Sample: email script
Dear Senator [SENATOR NAME],
My name is [MY FULL NAME], from [MY MAILING ADDRESS]. As your constituent, I am one of the vast majority of Americans who support safety, equality, and human rights for all Palestinians and Israelis. Today I'm asking you to support the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and call for an immediate arms embargo with Israel.
As the Netanyahu government bombs civilians in Gaza, as hostages remain in captivity, and as Israel escalates its attacks on Lebanon, a majority of Americans — including American Jews — support a permanent ceasefire and hostage exchange, and an arms embargo to get us there.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians are facing malnutrition and starvation. The volume of aid reaching Gazans is lower than at any time in the last year. Blocking humanitarian aid violates the Foreign Assistance Act, as well as the Geneva Convention.
Our country cannot continue to be complicit in this war by supplying more weapons. Calling for an arms embargo is both the moral and politically popular thing to do.
We cannot wait for thousands more to be killed to take action. Please add your name in support of the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval, including Senate Joint Resolutions 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, and 116, to block $20 billion in weapons to the Israeli military. I would greatly appreciate a response stating your official position on the resolutions.
Thank you.

WaPo: Trump proposals could drain Social Security in 6 years, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget
Julie Zauzmer Weil at WaPo:
A new report projects that the Social Security Trust Fund might run out of money within six years under a Donald Trump presidency, while Vice President Kamala Harris’s proposed policies would not meaningfully change the current trajectory.
Social Security faces a looming funding crisis in an aging country, with trustees most recently predicting that the retirement and disability program’s trust fund will become insolvent in 2035. Many of Trump’s campaign proposals would accelerate that timeline, potentially by years, said the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan group that opposes large federal deficits. In a report released Monday, the organization concluded that many of Trump’s proposed second-term agenda items all work in the same direction when it comes to the Social Security Trust Fund. The budget group did not produce a similar report on Harris’s policies because they would have a negligible effect measured only in weeks or months rather than years, said Marc Goldwein, CRFB’s senior policy director. Compared to prior presidential campaigns, Goldwein said, “I can’t think of anything that would be this order of magnitude” in its detrimental effect on Social Security’s bottom line compared to the policies Trump has proposed.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt dismissed the report in an email to The Washington Post: “The so-called experts at CRFB have been consistently wrong throughout the years.” She said Trump’s energy and trade policies would improve the economy to “put Social Security on a stronger footing for generations to come,” and alleged that Harris would damage the program by allowing millions of undocumented immigrants to stay in the country. The campaign promise made by Trump that would most directly affect Social Security collections is his promise that no Social Security recipients should have to pay federal income taxes on their benefits. Under current law, 40 percent of beneficiaries pay taxes on some portion of their Social Security. The tax they pay on their benefits goes directly back to the trust fund, and getting rid of it could cost the program almost $1 trillion over 10 years, the report forecast. Other Trump policies might have indirect effects. Trump’s pledge to deport millions of undocumented workers could cost the trust fund hundreds of millions of dollars, the CRFB said. Many undocumented immigrants have payroll taxes taken out of their paychecks for the Social Security Trust Fund, but never become eligible to claim benefits, so they are a net positive for the program.
Trump’s proposed high tariffs on all imports could affect the economy in several ways detrimental to Social Security’s financial health, CRFB said. If the tariffs drive high inflation as projected by Wall Street experts, Social Security will have to pay out more in benefits because of automatic cost-of-living adjustments based on inflation. The report also pointed to Trump’s promises not to tax tip income or income earned during overtime hours. Trump has not clarified whether he means to exempt them from federal income taxes only or also from taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare. If he means the latter, that could cost Social Security $150 million to more than $1 trillion over a decade, with the likely outcome on the very high end of that range, CRFB said.
[...] Both Trump and Harris have said they aim to protect Social Security to prevent cuts if elected, but neither candidate has offered a comprehensive plan to plug the current projected gap. Stabilizing the trust fund will require either raising more money or spending less money in some way, or a combination of the two.
Donald Trump’s proposals to Social Security, despite claiming to be a champion of Social Security, could hasten the depletion of Social Security funding, per a report from Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

I was cleaning out one of my rooms today where I also keep fandom stuff in boxes (I have multiple boxes for The Beatles and also The X-Files) so I went through them. The nostalgia.
Then I discovered Mulder/Scully fanfic I had written in the late 90s, handwritten and in my mother tongue.
Me: *cringes*
Also me: These are museum pieces! These should be conserved! I should translate them and put them on ao3. Maybe I should just put them up without translating. 😂

« If we’re putting out something positive about Democrats, it’s both more interesting and more persuasive to voters if we remember to say, ‘and Republicans stand for the opposite’. It’s so obvious but it really requires intentionality and that ball is often dropped. Those are the two low-hanging fruit things that if we get some attention, let’s not waste our attention by misfiring. »
— Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), quoted at The Guardian.
It's not enough to tell voters that inflation has fallen and that unemployment is close to historical lows. We need to get the message out that Trump would derail the recovery.
Trump's horribly botched handling of the outbreak of COVID-19 not only cost hundreds of thousands of lives sent the economy into recession in 2020.
That Guardian article by David Smith points out..
The PCCC’s research shows that Democrats can drive a contrast over taxing the wealthy to boost social security. The statement “Billionaires and other wealthy Americans should have to pay social security taxes at the same rate as other Americans” has support from 79% of independent voters. Furthermore, the assertion that “Democrats support increasing taxes on billionaires and support increasing funding for programs like social security” gives the party an 11-percentage point lead. While adding a second sentence – “Republicans are pushing to cut taxes on billionaires and are pushing to cut funding for programs like social security” – doubles the advantage to 22 percentage points.
Don't wait for ads or speeches to describe the gap in Social Security taxes to people who are unaware of it. If filthy rich billionaires paid their fair share we wouldn't be hearing talk about Social Security going bankrupt.
Over Thanksgiving, don't let your blowhard MAGA uncle spew crap about the economy.
The truth is that all US recessions except one since the Korean War began under Republican administrations. That includes the Great Recession started under George W. Bush (it was his second recession).

Alright I am on the way to uni. The first "hey let's try writing there instead of at home" spot I decided on.
It's an hour drive with public transport. Which I hope will add to my motivation to actually work. Plus I think I might need some more academics texts to reference for some parts of my paper, and there's gonna be something fitting in the library at uni. Another plus is the food sharing cupboard in the student cafe, fingers crossed there is something there for me to make myself lunch.

Sorority girl rushtok rant
#I'm so irrationally angry about the bamamorgan situation#as an active sister (i also hold relevant director positions and have been on recruitment member selection and director/exec selection#committees) in a much smaller and more relax led chapter than any of bamas we would have still be cautious about extending a bid to her#her fanbase is so emotionally involved in her sorority success (like a bunch of 35-50 year olds went to walk around the old row houses in#the summer these are literally just fancy dorms which is so creepy) like you don't want to be living with and partying with and doing phil#with someone who is giving reports to the tiktok moms#like as sisters we are constantly told to be careful about what we post that is related to the org and in these big chapters EVERYTHING you#post is considered a reflection so you shouldn't be calling certain houses top tier (because zta and phi mu wouldn't have been kind to her)#and It's really frustrating to see her continue to milk the situation by posting what she would have worn each day#like it's encouraging her fans to go harrass sisters in all orgs!!#also she rushed last year and turned down the bid she got from a “bottom tier” org#she's not going to get a COB bid because everyone knows her and there's a very limited number of non-first years allowed in#like i feel bad for her but this process works the way it does so you aren't desperately trying to find a place in a chapter that didn't#want you it's called running home for a reason#also the tiktok sorority moms/aunts need to stop constantly talking about greek life#it makes it so much more awkward for our social media teams knowing their ideas are now discussion pieces for women still angry about being#rejected as young adults

I never thought I would despise Barack Obama… but every-time he pops up on my screen to panhandle for the Democrats ( knowing they gave 26Billion dollars to IsNotReal to orchestrate a modern holocaust - instead of resolving homelessness or some other crisis in America )
I am enraged.
I hate Republicans but they have always been t rash. I now despise Democrats because on top of being malicious… they are fake.
