Sex Ed.

The day she gets her first period, Sakura Haruno is convinced she is dying. Sasuke Uchiha is convinced he needs to protect her from some invisible enemy. Kakashi Hatake isn't convinced that girls even get periods. And Naruto Uzumaki is the only one actually prepared. genin!team7

“Sakura-chan,” Kakashi was looking at her so kindly with his single eye. “Why are you crying?”

The girl’s face was screwed up, red, cheeks stained with tear tracks. Why was she crying? “I-I…” she didn’t want to say it. It was so stupid. “I was supposed to be the one to catch the fish for dinner tonight.”

The softness of his visible features twisted in apparent confusion. “Sakura-chan, Naruto and Sasuke always-”

“I know they always catch the fish. B-but how am I supposed to get any better at it if no one l-lets me try?”

“I didn’t know you were so passionate about your survival skills.” Kakashi said gently, but the confused quirk to his brow remained. “Well, why don’t we have you cook the fish for us tonight instead?”

“I always cook the fish!” she yelled, she was frowning and breathing hard. “Is it because I’m the girl and girls are supposed to cook? I wanted to catch the fish!”

Kakashi’s single eye widened marginally. “Okay, okay,” he looked around their camp. “Do you want to gather kindling instead?”

She was about to point out to him that finding sticks in the forest was not at all equitable to catching food, but Sasuke and Naruto stepped into their small camp at that moment.

“Kakashi-nii, why is Sakura-chan crying?” Naruto asked before swerving on Sasuke. “What did you do to make Sakura-chan cry you bastard?”

“Idiot,” Sasuke sighed, tossing a bundle of fish towards Kakashi. “I was with you the entire time, it’s not my fault that she’s crying.” He glanced over at his female teammate though, noting the distress painted too obviously on her face. “What’re you crying about now?” he asked, clearly tired with her more open displays of emotion.

“Sasuke-” 

“You bastard!” Kakashi moved to scold him, but Naruto beat him to the literal punch. “Don’t you dare talk to Sakura-chan like that! You have no idea what she’s going through.”

“She’s literally sitting around being useless. At least you and I caught some dinner.”

Kakashi opened his mouth again, but Sakura darted up and stalked over to Kakashi to grab the bundle of fish out of his hands.

“I’ll cook the damn things.” She attempted to say it with venom but the hiccup that interrupted the sentence undermined any vitriol she intended with the statement.

When she bent over to get the fish, she heard Sasuke and Naruto inhale sharply. “Sakura, why is there so much blood on you? Are you hurt, is that why you’re crying?” Sasuke’s bloodline sharpened as he noted the blood on the back of her dress.

“Blood?!” she squeaked, flushing crimson she tried to cover the bloodstain as she twisted away from the boys. Sasuke’s sharingan eyes were wide with concern, but Naruto’s blue eyes were trying to convey something different.

“Sakura-chan-” Kakashi started to speak, but she squeaked again, realizing she had twisted away from the boys and showed the stain to her teacher. Shame flooded over her along with more tears, and before anyone could stop her, she ran off into the woods.

The boys stood silent for a heartbeat before Sasuke moved to go after her. Naruto shifted to grab his wrist and stop him before he could move.

“Let me go idiot.” Sasuke bit out shortly. “Sakura’s hurt, she needs help.”

Naruto shook his head. “She’s not hurt.”

“That was a lot of blood,” Kakashi said gently, but when Naruto’s blue eyes glared at him, he sucked in a breath. “Well shit,” Kakashi said, rubbing at his temples and closing his eyes.

“And you all say I’m the idiot.” Naruto muttered.

“You are the idiot,” Sasuke shot back, trying to tug his hand out of Naruto’s grip. “Now let me go, I need to help her.”

Kakashi didn’t bother to mention Sasuke’s interesting choice of words, instead just shook his head. “No, Naruto is right. She’s not hurt.”

“You saw the blood!” Sasuke insisted, starting to get irritated with how many damn words he had to use to convince his team their teammate needed help.

“I’ll go talk to her.” Naruto stated confidently. He dropped Sasuke’s wrist, grabbed his pack and Sakura’s before stalking off after her. “I’ll shout if anything goes wrong.”

Kakashi grunted an agreement and Sasuke stared after the blond with his jaw hanging open. “You’re just going to let him go?”

“He at least recognized what was going on.” Kakashi shot back, turning his attention to the bundle of fish. Sasuke started to complain but Kakashi shook his head. “Go gather the kindling, from the opposite direction that your teammates went.” Kakashi scolded as Sasuke shifted to follow after his team before scowling at being caught and grudgingly shuffled in the opposite direction.

“You’re a dick.” He muttered after passing his teacher.

“And you’re not as smart as you think you are.”

Even if I don’t like it…” Naruto’s expression fell, but resolution rose strongly in him too. “But there’s people in Konoha I just can’t abandon. That means I can’t abandon Konoha, and I can’t give up on it. Somebody has to stay and make it better. I won’t run away. I’ll give Konoha a second chance, and me and my friends are going to make it into a place as great as Sakuragakure. I’ll make Konoha into a place that Sasuke-teme can come home to.” Naruto nodded firmly, implacable. “Kakashi-sensei feels the same way. Konoha’s our home. You and Sasuke-teme really hate Konoha, but Kakashi-sensei and I are going to make it into a home you can like again! So you guys can come visit us! Okay?”

Naruto doesn't have a huge role in this story. Of course, he's also the most important character. Everything in the story turned on his fulcrum - on the actions that he hadn't taken yet, born from the resolve of a man who was still a boy. He saved the day, not through his own actions, but through the ripple effect that his actions had on the world and the people within it. He also has no idea. He also can't read.

Naruto Uzumaki is not particularly interested in a utopia. He's not interested in much beyond ramen and becoming the Hokage and Sasuke. He's not interested in the weight of someone's sins and their potential for redemption, despite being ninja Jesus. I think Naruto only cares about if you want to be a good dude - and if you don't want to be a good dude today, if you'll want to be a good dude tomorrow.

Both Naruto and Sasuke were hurt badly by Konoha. It was important that Sasuke leave Konoha - that he be able to leave the world that hurt him, and find a happier new home. But it was important that Naruto stay too - that there was somebody who was willing to take his crap world by the horns and fix what already exists, to make his world a better place. I think both types of people are necessary, and that the ability to make the choice is necessary too. You can't create a better world by playing by the rules of a broken system, but you can't create a better world by giving up on it either.

I think while reading Naruto you have to kinda go, 'damn bitch stop trying to over perform just to earn the right to exist, their acceptance will always be conditional'. You can't Hokage people into loving you. But you can't create a better world by sticking a bunch of orphans in a tree, either. To me, Naruto is the necessary person who wants to fix what he has.

Obito does not understand that. He's convinced that he understands the gospel of Naruto very well. He does not. At all. He willfully misinterprets it, because it doesn't reinforce what Obito needs to believe. It doesn't let him feel what he wants to feel.

If he did understand it, he would realize something extremely obvious: that Naruto had been able to save Obito because of Naruto's own suffering, not despite it. Obito hypothesizes that suffering creates bad people, but Naruto utilized his own suffering as a tool for empathy and compassion. By Obito's own reasoning, Naruto is a 'dirty person' who wouldn't belong in the own utopia that he inspired. He's trying to build a heaven that Ninja Jesus wouldn't be welcome in. It's a massive logical flaw that Obito knows exists and blatantly ignores.

Why does Obito ignore this? Because it undermines his whole nihlistic, absolutist, deterimistic worldview, mostly. But also because that would imply that people with narrative parallels to Naruto might, hypothetically, deserve to be saved, and would have a place in Utopia. And, like, ya know, can't have that.

The way Itachi watched Shisui kill himself in front of him and went "hm that's a shitty thing to do" and then immediately decided that the solution was to have Sasuke kill him instead. And that's why Itachi is one of the funniest characters in the series to me

imo pretending kishimoto is an awful writer is as wrong as saying he’s a mastermind at it. i think he can write very rich and nuanced characters and relationships and messy but enjoyable plots and denying either of those is just being blatantly dismissive. there’s a reason why naruto still holds up till this day after all. there’s many things in his story that feel like “one in a million” and many others that just feels like they are too big for what he could handle but overall when people say nothing in naruto is worthy and the entire thing is bad so there’s no point in taking the time to analyze the manga, i have to disagree because well No, that’s not entirely true. yes, there’s plenty of works that are better and also plenty of works that are far worse like with any other thing out there doesn’t mean the entire manga should be discarded

I'm kinda curious about the period of time when Minato was Hokage, because there's so much you could say about Konoha depending on it. It could be that I don't remember what the manga says about it too, but anyway.

We know that before Minato was Hokage, the discrimination towards jinchuurikis was high. We know it from Kushina's story. After Minato, the jinchuurikis discrimination was not exactly as bad as it could have been (and the bar is soooo low) in physical terms, but the level of sheer isolation was ridiculous. Sure, Kushina had guards and she lived in a tower with a perimeter drawn around it, one that she couldn't surpass. The difference is that Kushina knew why she was being isolated, there was someone willing to teach her about it right from the start, a family member even if distant, someone with the same experience.

All Naruto knew is that he was unwanted. He had no family, no one was willing to guide him. No, not even Iruka. I'm talking about before in the manga, before Iruka realized how much Naruto needed him and did something about it.

If that was before and after, how was it during the time Minato was Hokage?

Did Minato push for Kushina to become Hokage? Was the idea rejected? Did he get angry? It was her dream after all. Or did they realize it would be impossible so they pushed Minato to go for it? Were they sad about the idea of Kushina having to live her dream through Minato, because they wouldn't let her go for it? When did Kushina give up and change her goal in life?

Did Minato tell anyone about his plan on how to get rid of the jinchuuriki discrimination? Did he talk about it with Kushina? We know that they planned Naruto's birth and tried to make it as safe as possible. When the time to seal Kurama within Naruto came, they both knew how Konoha would treat Naruto. Minato wanted Naruto to be viewed as the son of a hero, but his wishes were thrown aside as soon as his body was cold enough.

With no law to protect the jinchuuriki of the kyubi, I wonder how bold the people of Konoha were in their discrimination against Kushina while Minato was Hokage. Times were different, Minato was highly respected and feared, but how many times did he have to tell someone to mind their words? How many times did he catch Kushina avoiding a certain restaurant or a street? Did he ever feel a slight of resentment against his home for the way they treated his wife? His pregnant wife?

Were there rumors of the child being a monster for being the son of a jinchuuriki? It could be that some Konoha parents telling their kids to not play with the little Uzumaki/Namikaze was a thing before Naruto was even born?

From what I've seen, Konoha has no gentleness for kids of prestigious lineages. Being a child of a powerful shinobi makes your life worse, in fact. A million times over: it happened to Sasuke, to Neji, it happened to Kakashi in the generation before them, it happened to Itachi in the in-between.

I don't think that being the son of the hokage would have saved Naruto for being mistreated by the village. Not when his mother was a jinchuuriki.

It just makes me wonder, you know?

In the time he had, how did Minato try to change things to protect his family?

Was it a matter of needing more time? Or there wasn't a plan at all?
