also i think harry potter is a more interesting character when you allow james to be extremely morally grey. imo this is more reflective of canon: he was a bully. he was blindly privileged. he harassed lily and treated it like a joke. and no matter what, he's still a man who wanted to marry "the brightest witch of her age" and saw absolutely nothing wrong with making her his jobless prospectless pregnant housewife at 19 years old! that's entitlement!
like in doing this, james technically carried on centuries of misogynist conservative pureblood tradition (marrying women off to be teenaged childbrides) without another thought. this is the environment in which he was raised. and he told himself it was ok and progressive because he, like, wasn't racist to her for being muggleborn and genuinely loved her as a person, or whatever. but that's the bare minimum! and it shows that he had no qualms with participating in pureblood culture & tradition when it suited him, because he literally materially did. a better james potter would never have been comfortable with letting her take on that role.
and the series themes are more resonant when harry's parents aren't both just, like, nebulously ontologically good. it's really poignant when harry spends his entire life being taught to idolize a man who was, in actuality, kind of a piece of shit— and grapples with this as he grows up, ultimately choosing to be different. the lesson is that both good (and cruelty) can come from anyone, regardless of birth circumstances or house placement, because goodness is a choice.

i’m really interested in y’all’s takes (and if this is popular /yall are are interested i might make polls for more characters)
below is propaganda for what i think/what im tied between (very long)
^this is mainly the inspo for everything i wrote
so a decade ago when I made my original Hogwarts au i felt so sure of my placements. but then as the characters became so complex and more was revealed, it’s obviously more nuanced.
lion was clearly my choice at the beginning. he’s an impulsive, reckless, strong willed, bold, determined, passionate and selfless person. because he was fighting for a cause we agreed with, he was heroic. he exemplified the good parts of gryffindor; following his morals and what he believed was right and driven towards his goals for freedom. he had such intense personal justice and morality to the point that he believed that those that took freedom from others deserved to died.
but without a doubt, that was twisted when we realized the traits he had were not necessarily for humanity but for his own selfish desires. which showed his true snake nature. he only cared to protect himself and his loved ones. he didn’t care about anything or anyone else in the end, and maybe he never did. all he cared about was his own personal freedom being taken from him and he would do anything to get it and punish those that stole it from him.
he didn’t know why but he wanted to destroy everything. is that more lion or snake? he’s such a simple minded character. sees everything in such black and white, me vs them, extreme to extreme, killing himself for humanity or genociding the world. and he was prepared to and did do extremely unethical and manipulative things to get what he wanted. he cares about his people and will destroy everyone else. that’s so key to being a snake. but being single-minded is also like key lion trait.
i’ve noticed that the line between lion and snake is very thin. and so is badger and snake surprisingly.
-
also to those who are curious how he might fit into the other houses:
with badger, his loyalty was and is a key component of his character. he wanted freedom, he didn’t want to die, but he could not kill his friends. he could not escape his main ties to his friends. a badger’s entire basis is about care for all people, however a badger can decide who counts as a ‘person’. he has no problem killing titans at the beginning but then decides to spare the one on the floor. he dehumanizes those who take freedom from others and makes it in his head that they don’t count as ‘people’. which culminates in him wiping out everyone who is not ‘people’ to him.
but i think this exemplifies snake traits more
with bird, it’s hard to explain bc im seeing it in the sorting hat chats pov (the link i put above) but they say that bird’s main driving force is systems and the system they have crafted must be followed. most birds change the system and make it more complex as the learn more. but stagnant birds are those that refuse to change. when his need for freedom conflicts with his knowledge that everything is predetermined and he has no real choice, his system breaks and he becomes depressed and is consigned to suicide.
tho …i don’t know. he’s like the least bird person ever. he is impulsive and reckless. he only starts to be calculating in the end of his life in an extremely snake way. he doesn’t systemize his morals or views of the world or is in pursuit for knowledge and truth. rather he is very dead set on one goal and commits even when he knows it’s wrong (which a bird would never think) also bro is not wise or creative or any other characteristics—
-
So now with all the propaganda out of the way, I’d love for you to write your explanations for your choice! (long or short)
also i wanna do a poll for armin, mikasa reiner and jean bc those are alsao characters who i feel like have such nuances to them that id love to hear input:))

Tom Riddle Had Lupus: A Headcanon
First, I would like to state this has very little if any canon evidence, which is why it is a headcanon. If you have thoughts on it feel free to leave a note, but you must be respectful, especially if you disagree. I highly doubt anyone will even see this, but what I say still stands.
#1: How I Came Up With This Idea
I, like many people, write fanfiction occasionally whether just for myself or myself and others if I ever post it. I had started a new project that includes Tom Riddle as a teenager and I wanted to incorporate a headcanon I saw. The headcanon stated that Tom Riddle is awfully human, he gets sick often, is always too hot, things like that.
With this thought in mind I started digging around on the internet for something that would cause this. Naturally, I came across autoimmune diseases and immediately rolled with it as someone who has a family history of autoimmune. So, this is where this entire thing started.
#2: Why Lupus?
Lupus, like a large majority of autoimmune diseases, has a genetic component involved in it. This is perfect for someone like Tom Riddle because his family has a long history of inbreeding which is known to heighten the risks of certain diseases.
There is still a lot unknown about lupus, but there is some evidence to back up triggers relating to the disease.
Causes/triggers are:
Genetic factors: there are common genes found in people with lupus that are passed down and heighten the risk of an individual getting lupus. People with parents that have lupus are also more at risk than they would be otherwise.
Hormones: lupus most commonly affects women, so it is believed the hormone estrogen could have something to do with it due to woman having higher levels. Woman also commonly have more lupus symptoms before periods and while pregnant. However, no connection has been found between the two, so researchers have moved onto different hormones.
Environment: people more likely to get lupus through genes and hormones can have it triggered by their environment. Again, scientists aren’t 100% sure what environmental factors could cause lupus, but they do have theory’s. The most backed are: Ultraviolet light, infections, silica dust. Other possible factors: medicines, emotional stress and anything that can damage/tire the body (surgery, injuries, birth).
I will not be going over hormones due to little research and the fact Tom Riddle is a biological male and has lower levels of estrogen. Men are also susceptible to lupus, even if they’re less likely to get it.
Genes:
I’m going to mention how magic seems to work first before I dig into genetics because I will be mentioning Merope Gaunt/Riddle.
We know witches and wizards have a faster healing rate than muggles, and that can easily be drawn back to magic. Especially since healing magic exists, so we know magic is capable of it. This means that a witch and wizards magic naturally will heal them.
Magic also responds to a persons emotions and desires. In the Philosophers Stone Harry mentions his hair growing back when he really wanted it to and apparating onto the school roof when he desperately wanted to get away from Dudley. Theres also spells like the patronus and unforgivables that rely entirely on emotion and intent.
Now, let’s dig into Merope and also the Gaunts in general.
The Gaunts in Meropes time were incredibly inbred and they were described as nearly being squibs. They did still have magic, yes, but they couldn’t wield it like the majority of other witches and wizards. It was there, but not easily accessible.
I think this could be linked back to an autoimmune disease, especially with how Merope, a witch, died from childbirth (I’ll go into this in a bit, so bare with me). If a witch and wizards magic will naturally heal them, then it surely did for the Gaunts as well. That means that when a Gaunt got lupus their magic immediately was put towards repairing the damage their own immune system is wrecking upon their body.
This quickly becomes a problem because the magical reserves for a Gaunt is decreasing the more and more they inbreed. That means a larger and larger percentage of their magic will be put towards healing them. And yes, not every Gaunt will get lupus, however, their magic reserves are dwindling regardless.
Now, I do believe Merope had lupus, mainly based off of her dying after giving birth to Tom. Let me explain.
Lupus is known to put a person at higher risk of pregnancy complications, especially if they have kidney problems, high blood pressure and blood problems (which is common because lupus can cause anemia).
A person with lupus is immediately at higher risk of all these things, especially during lupus flares where the immune system is actively attacking healthy tissue.
Lupus flare triggers are:
Emotional stress
Physical stress to the body
Infections/illness
Exhaustion
Exposure to sunlight
I assume we all know what happened to Merope after she got pregnant, but I’ll recap. After she got pregnant (physical stress) she released Tom Riddle Sr. from the love potions which led to him leaving her (emotional stress), and her being left out on the streets (sunlight/exhaustion) due to being disowned.
This creates a scenario where she is at extreme risk of lupus flares and anemia (she doesn’t have money to eat enough and is already at risk due to lupus). The stress alone will also raise her blood pressure.
Now, these circumstances would typically lead to a miscarriage or still birth, but this is where magic comes in. I believe Merope wanted her child to live so much that her magic (no matter how little) went towards keeping the fetus alive. However, by the time she gave birth she was so magically exhausted that she didn’t have enough magic to heal her, and many of her organs were probably already shut down/shutting down.
I mentioned how if a person has a parent with lupus they’re immediately at risk, this is where the genetic factor comes from.
Environment:
Tom Riddle Jr. now has the proper genes to get lupus, however, they need to be triggered to become lupus. I believe this could have easily happened with Tom living in an orphanage.
We’ll start with ultraviolet light (the sun), growing up in an orphanage I’m sure there were times Tom was forced to go outside for prolonged periods of time. Yes, he’s known to be a bookworm and stick to himself, but that doesn’t mean he never went outside.
It’s clear he definitely did from how he took those kids to the cave, meaning he went to the seaside often and found it, or they went on trips to the beach occasionally and he found it. This means he was exposed to ultraviolet light. We also know that at Hogwarts after exams kids are usually forced outside for a while to enjoy the weather (Philosophers Stone).
Infections can also trigger lupus, and while Tom has magic, he is still young and I believe he could’ve gotten one. Orphanages are not the most sanitary, and most don’t have enough money and resources to care for their charges properly. This means that infection/sicknesses are common ground.
Tom could have very well had an immunity to infections while younger without lupus, but I wouldn’t rule the possibility out.
The final trigger that is backed is silica dust. Now, this is a little trickier to look into because I’m lazy and the internet hates me when it comes to looking into Britain. However, I found some stuff.
Silica dust has been used for centuries for construction, and illnesses caused by it only began to be documented around the early 20th century, the time when Tom was a child. That means many of the buildings in London probably were made using silica dust.
This typically wouldn’t be a problem since Tom isn’t the one making the buildings or mining, but WWII definitely brought about a unique situation. Tom may not have been in the muggle world during the Blitz, but the buildings were still demolished and he definitely would have inhaled some silica dust.
Now, let’s go into the other possible reasons that aren’t properly backed.
The types of medications mentioned in my research are things I highly doubt Tom would come in contact with, so that trigger is immediately null.
Emotional stress can be backed by the fact Tom is living in an orphanage of all places. He doesn’t have a proper support system, he’s raising himself and he’s fully responsible for his own wellbeing. That isn’t including the fact he grew up during WWII which is also highly stressful. I don’t think I have to add more to this.
The final possible trigger is things that tire/damage the body. I can’t really think of anything since, y’know, he’s a magical child that doesn’t get sick often until he gets lupus. He’s also not going to be going through any surgeries (hopefully, but the 1920s—1940s are a wild time).
This concludes why I think Tom Marvolo Riddle had the autoimmune disease lupus, thank you for reading.

How the sorting system that JKR created works:
Everyone is sorted based on the primary trait that they value
How she actually used it:
Are they “evil”? Yes -> Slytherin
Are they an important character that has done something at some point in their lives that could be considered brave? Yes -> Gryffindor
If neither of these things apply to them, then they don’t really matter, so just roll a dice for their house. 1-3 is Hufflepuff, 4-6 is Ravenclaw

Przekichana noc.

Hey Everyone!
Once again I came across a random thought. As a Harry Potter fan, I was wondering how the Moon Knight system amongst the four Hogwarts house: Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, and Slytherin. Using the MCU’s version of the character(s), here’s how I would see them:
Steven Grant=Ravenclaw
Tumblr media
While some people may say Steven is Hufflepuff due to his honest and loyal nature, I would say he aligns more closely with the traits of Ravenclaw: intelligence and creativity. This can be seen in Steven’s studious nature in his interest in Egyptian history as well as the fact that he was able to help Marc and Layla figure out the constellations 🌌 by simply making their map into a star. Something that was outside the box thinking.
Marc Spector= Gryffindor
Tumblr media
Though this one is kind of a given, let me explain this one. Marc aligns closely with House Gryffindor due to his brave, daring and adventurous nature. Like all Gryffindors, Marc can also be pretty stubborn and reckless as he feels that he needs to handle everything alone and be able to meet the hero expectation and not let anyone down.
Jake Lockley= Slytherin
Tumblr media
Just because I put Jake in Slytherin for this scenario doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a bad guy. In fact, the few seconds that we had seen Jake show him to be very resourceful and shrewd as he adaptive to the situation of being the third alter by staying hidden from the rest of the system and only coming out when necessary. However, since Jake is the aggressive parts of Marc’s nature, this has led him to be manipulative and vindictive. This can be seen throughout the two times in three show where Marc thought Steven had killed those they were fighting against.
Do you agree or disagree with these thoughts? Please feel free to leave your opinions.

MXTX world building is the best I've seen so far (I haven't watched Dune yet, we'll see). YA novels and Mo dao Zu Shi may have wildly different connotations, but MDZS sects are closer to real community arrangement because it is according to culture, terrain, aesthetics and values, yet members of each sect can deviate from their sect's personalities because people living within classified communities still vary. There are strong sects, there are weak sects, you can create your own sect for fanfics. They have complexities within them that are rooted from the dramas and shallowness of human nature, yet are long running because they make sense socially, to the point that y'all forget that this novel has the young adult novel class division trope of assigning people to differently colored groups. Nonetheless, you can't tell to my face that Yiling Wei is slythetin and Gusu Lan is ravenclaw.
Although the houses in HP are under a school mandate, and the things in Divergent are rooted from a dystopian world, these tropes are limiting, as they force one-dimensional characteristics to the majority of your characters. I guess you could do that if you want, can't tell you how to make your OC. I guess where they went wrong is that they introduced the social system first before creating the characters. MXTX created the characters first (falling down the cliff, maybe, haha) then decided that there is social system within it that inevitably makes the characters suffer.
I also guess what I'm saying is that MXTX world building is well-thought of, complex, realistic yet magical, dramatic and political, and the world is sleeping on it.
