Tom Riddle Had Lupus: A Headcanon
First, I would like to state this has very little if any canon evidence, which is why it is a headcanon. If you have thoughts on it feel free to leave a note, but you must be respectful, especially if you disagree. I highly doubt anyone will even see this, but what I say still stands.
#1: How I Came Up With This Idea
I, like many people, write fanfiction occasionally whether just for myself or myself and others if I ever post it. I had started a new project that includes Tom Riddle as a teenager and I wanted to incorporate a headcanon I saw. The headcanon stated that Tom Riddle is awfully human, he gets sick often, is always too hot, things like that.
With this thought in mind I started digging around on the internet for something that would cause this. Naturally, I came across autoimmune diseases and immediately rolled with it as someone who has a family history of autoimmune. So, this is where this entire thing started.
#2: Why Lupus?
Lupus, like a large majority of autoimmune diseases, has a genetic component involved in it. This is perfect for someone like Tom Riddle because his family has a long history of inbreeding which is known to heighten the risks of certain diseases.
There is still a lot unknown about lupus, but there is some evidence to back up triggers relating to the disease.
Causes/triggers are:
Genetic factors: there are common genes found in people with lupus that are passed down and heighten the risk of an individual getting lupus. People with parents that have lupus are also more at risk than they would be otherwise.
Hormones: lupus most commonly affects women, so it is believed the hormone estrogen could have something to do with it due to woman having higher levels. Woman also commonly have more lupus symptoms before periods and while pregnant. However, no connection has been found between the two, so researchers have moved onto different hormones.
Environment: people more likely to get lupus through genes and hormones can have it triggered by their environment. Again, scientists aren’t 100% sure what environmental factors could cause lupus, but they do have theory’s. The most backed are: Ultraviolet light, infections, silica dust. Other possible factors: medicines, emotional stress and anything that can damage/tire the body (surgery, injuries, birth).
I will not be going over hormones due to little research and the fact Tom Riddle is a biological male and has lower levels of estrogen. Men are also susceptible to lupus, even if they’re less likely to get it.
Genes:
I’m going to mention how magic seems to work first before I dig into genetics because I will be mentioning Merope Gaunt/Riddle.
We know witches and wizards have a faster healing rate than muggles, and that can easily be drawn back to magic. Especially since healing magic exists, so we know magic is capable of it. This means that a witch and wizards magic naturally will heal them.
Magic also responds to a persons emotions and desires. In the Philosophers Stone Harry mentions his hair growing back when he really wanted it to and apparating onto the school roof when he desperately wanted to get away from Dudley. Theres also spells like the patronus and unforgivables that rely entirely on emotion and intent.
Now, let’s dig into Merope and also the Gaunts in general.
The Gaunts in Meropes time were incredibly inbred and they were described as nearly being squibs. They did still have magic, yes, but they couldn’t wield it like the majority of other witches and wizards. It was there, but not easily accessible.
I think this could be linked back to an autoimmune disease, especially with how Merope, a witch, died from childbirth (I’ll go into this in a bit, so bare with me). If a witch and wizards magic will naturally heal them, then it surely did for the Gaunts as well. That means that when a Gaunt got lupus their magic immediately was put towards repairing the damage their own immune system is wrecking upon their body.
This quickly becomes a problem because the magical reserves for a Gaunt is decreasing the more and more they inbreed. That means a larger and larger percentage of their magic will be put towards healing them. And yes, not every Gaunt will get lupus, however, their magic reserves are dwindling regardless.
Now, I do believe Merope had lupus, mainly based off of her dying after giving birth to Tom. Let me explain.
Lupus is known to put a person at higher risk of pregnancy complications, especially if they have kidney problems, high blood pressure and blood problems (which is common because lupus can cause anemia).
A person with lupus is immediately at higher risk of all these things, especially during lupus flares where the immune system is actively attacking healthy tissue.
Lupus flare triggers are:
Emotional stress
Physical stress to the body
Infections/illness
Exhaustion
Exposure to sunlight
I assume we all know what happened to Merope after she got pregnant, but I’ll recap. After she got pregnant (physical stress) she released Tom Riddle Sr. from the love potions which led to him leaving her (emotional stress), and her being left out on the streets (sunlight/exhaustion) due to being disowned.
This creates a scenario where she is at extreme risk of lupus flares and anemia (she doesn’t have money to eat enough and is already at risk due to lupus). The stress alone will also raise her blood pressure.
Now, these circumstances would typically lead to a miscarriage or still birth, but this is where magic comes in. I believe Merope wanted her child to live so much that her magic (no matter how little) went towards keeping the fetus alive. However, by the time she gave birth she was so magically exhausted that she didn’t have enough magic to heal her, and many of her organs were probably already shut down/shutting down.
I mentioned how if a person has a parent with lupus they’re immediately at risk, this is where the genetic factor comes from.
Environment:
Tom Riddle Jr. now has the proper genes to get lupus, however, they need to be triggered to become lupus. I believe this could have easily happened with Tom living in an orphanage.
We’ll start with ultraviolet light (the sun), growing up in an orphanage I’m sure there were times Tom was forced to go outside for prolonged periods of time. Yes, he’s known to be a bookworm and stick to himself, but that doesn’t mean he never went outside.
It’s clear he definitely did from how he took those kids to the cave, meaning he went to the seaside often and found it, or they went on trips to the beach occasionally and he found it. This means he was exposed to ultraviolet light. We also know that at Hogwarts after exams kids are usually forced outside for a while to enjoy the weather (Philosophers Stone).
Infections can also trigger lupus, and while Tom has magic, he is still young and I believe he could’ve gotten one. Orphanages are not the most sanitary, and most don’t have enough money and resources to care for their charges properly. This means that infection/sicknesses are common ground.
Tom could have very well had an immunity to infections while younger without lupus, but I wouldn’t rule the possibility out.
The final trigger that is backed is silica dust. Now, this is a little trickier to look into because I’m lazy and the internet hates me when it comes to looking into Britain. However, I found some stuff.
Silica dust has been used for centuries for construction, and illnesses caused by it only began to be documented around the early 20th century, the time when Tom was a child. That means many of the buildings in London probably were made using silica dust.
This typically wouldn’t be a problem since Tom isn’t the one making the buildings or mining, but WWII definitely brought about a unique situation. Tom may not have been in the muggle world during the Blitz, but the buildings were still demolished and he definitely would have inhaled some silica dust.
Now, let’s go into the other possible reasons that aren’t properly backed.
The types of medications mentioned in my research are things I highly doubt Tom would come in contact with, so that trigger is immediately null.
Emotional stress can be backed by the fact Tom is living in an orphanage of all places. He doesn’t have a proper support system, he’s raising himself and he’s fully responsible for his own wellbeing. That isn’t including the fact he grew up during WWII which is also highly stressful. I don’t think I have to add more to this.
The final possible trigger is things that tire/damage the body. I can’t really think of anything since, y’know, he’s a magical child that doesn’t get sick often until he gets lupus. He’s also not going to be going through any surgeries (hopefully, but the 1920s—1940s are a wild time).
This concludes why I think Tom Marvolo Riddle had the autoimmune disease lupus, thank you for reading.

my random HP family headcanons that i firmly stand by
(not canon compliant)
creature blood was remarkably common in the older family lines that existed before modern-day laws. it is rather rare that these families produce true creatures themselves, even half-blooded creatures, but the blood can often manifest into family gifts. for example, creature blood is how the slytherin line have their ability to speak parseltongue.
the black family are world-renowned in various fields. they’ve produced countless scholars, and some of the finest duellists of each generation. but the family specialty, that everyone learns, is curse-breaking and it’s inverse. there’s a terrible item in the family vault that could kill you if you touch it? contact the blacks. you need an object enchanted to persuade someone into supporting a wizengamot bill? contact the blacks. expensive as their services may be, it’s always worth the money. customer satisfaction guaranteed.
the black family have held their reputation for dabbling in the darkest of arts, even black magic, since their very beginning. their family name comes from their reputation of practicing black magic. this is separate from dark magic, and is a dead art today. whilst books exist in the darkest corners of very few family’s vaults and libraries, the sacrifices required have deterred anyone who picked them up for centuries. a branch of black magic involves the summoning of beings from beyond our world, ‘demons’ as they are often referred to. the summoning of a shape-shifting demon, and subsequent procreation with, is a potential reason why only the black family have metamorphmagi in britain today- though this claim is unproven, and no longer proudly claimed by the family itself.
the malfoys have veela blood, especially these days. it was a rather scandalous affair when abraxas malfoy married a french witch, amelie bonnacord, who had been adopted into a notable pureblood family and happened to be a veela. the malfoys already had distant veela ancestry, making abraxas resistant to the veela allure. their children, lucius and lydia malfoy, were therefore half veela, and her grandchildren, including draco malfoy, a quarter veela. the veela allure seemed to work differently with men, and little was known about it as men born to those with veela blood was rare. the malfoys spend most holiday seasons in france, visiting family, and all speak fluent french.
the potter family never have been, and never should be seen as, a sparkling beacon for light magic. as necromancers by blood, no matter how much time passes since their amalgamation with the peverells, they naturally lean towards darker magic to facilitate practicing the art. not every potter has dabbled in their family gift, it’s not a requirement, but the ancient books in the family vault cannot be destroyed and will always return to the vault after a necromancer passes.
a few centuries into the past, the potter family migrated to india before a couple of branches returned to britain in the early 20th century. fleamont potter and his cousin, charlus potter, were the first potters to be born on british soil for centuries. fleamont potter married euphemia patil, a half-indian british witch, and had james potter. james potter, upon marrying lily evans, had harry potter- who was half indian.
the lupin family have a long history of naturally born werewolves, hence their family name. as time went on, and laws changed, werewolves born into the family would assimilate into packs instead of living as wizards with a dark secret. with time, fewer and fewer werewolves were born into the family, and the werewolf blood appeared dormant. remus lupin became a werewolf through an attack from fenrir greyback- the first werewolf in the family in several generations. his condition did not pass onto his son, but it is possible that remus being a werewolf may awaken the possibility of future werewolves in the lupin line in generations to come.
the weasleys hail from an old irish clan, one which they no longer practice the traditions and magic of- deeming them outdated in an age where they are deemed ‘blood traitors’ for their love and acceptance of muggleborns. the family magic is largely based around the elements, and is only really practiced by bill and charlie- though fred and george dabble in it from time to time. due to turning their backs on tradition, the weasley manor wards refused to grant entry to those in the family who did not practice their family magics- which is why they live in the burrow instead.
the weasleys fall from grace is infamous in pureblood circles. before the first war, they were actually a rather wealthy family. arthur weasley’s auror wage was enough to live off with two less children, and their vault was plentiful. molly added to their income by authoring books on household charms and tutoring pureblood daughters in etiquette. unfortunately, molly encouraged arthur to funnel money into the order of the phoenix to help with the war- they were not active participants, rather financial backers. by the war’s end, the family vault had been halved, they had two more children, and molly had quit authoring books to raise the children. she soon quit tutoring too, turning her back on other pureblood families due to her paranoia that anyone who hadn’t aided the order in the war were all dark and thus contributed somehow to her brothers deaths. soon after, arthur left the aurors and moved to head the misuse of muggle artifices office at molly’s insistence, due to her persistent paranoia- this time that something horrible would befall him as an auror. this caused another significant drop in the family’s finances, gaining them their reputation of being a poor family with more children than they can clothe.
the nott family are descended from viking clansmen in norway, and the majority of the family are still based there today. they’re very proud of this heritage, and every child born into the family is trained extensively in hand to hand combat from a young age. the nott family additional pre-schooling education also includes the language of old norse, nordic history, ancient runes, and runic magic. the england-based branch of the family add norwegian on to this as well.
the gaunt line, and subsequently the slytherin line, are only extinct in britain (the cursed child is not canon to me idc about delphini). a branch of the family, descended from one ominis gaunt, live on in france and have long abandoned their practices of inbreeding. the branch or branches of the family that remained on british soil rapidly squandered all that remained in their vaults by the turn of the 20th century, leading the family to financial and societal ruin with only their heritage and a few heirlooms remaining intact.
the lovegood family are rather notable as one of the few remaining seer lines in britain. pandora lovegood, upon marrying xenophilius ollivander, found her own seer ability passed down to her daughter luna. many overlook their seer lineage and focus more on the family’s eccentricity, forgetting that true seers rarely speak in plain language- they cannot always just speak the truth of what their visions show them, they must relay what they have seen in a way that makes others search for the answer. it’s not that hard to understand when you actually try it.

What if there were Polaroids in the 1890’s 🤔 You cannot tell me the trio aren’t the type to take obscene amounts of pictures whenever possible (except for ominis duh, he’ll probably be the muse most of the time 😂)
I was listening to Dear Arkansas Daughter by Lady lamb and this particular lyrics reminded me of them 🫶
(who am I kidding it’s because my entire brain can’t think of anything else but HL 🥲)
Ps. I’m into extreme lighting lately I don’t know why, I like the contrast soooo much 🥹

Okay, maybe I'm a little obsessed with the idea of Omnis in love with a muggle girl.
If I write a whole fanfic about this on Wattpad, would you read it? I'm loving writing these oneshots, but I think it would be amazing to give it more depth by creating a whole fanfic. If you say you will read it if I write this fanfic, then I will post it on Wattpad for you.
Or do you prefer a book with oneshots and random headcanons about the Hogwarts Legacy characters?

The birth of envy

Friday, December 31st, 1926.
Last Protocol of the Year.
This evening, a young woman came to us to find shelter from the icy cold winds blowing across London, a snowstorm has been raging for multiple days already, yet today it had been exceptionally bad. The streets were unusable during the morning hours, traffic stuck for hours. Without questioning how the woman even made it to our humble orphanage, miss Cole had ordered us to take in the pregnant lady.
Minutes after arriving, she suddenly began clutching her womb, and miss Cole’s and I‘s gaze met, both knowing exactly what was happening—She was having contractions, but by the look of it, she’s had them for a while already, the young woman not looking surprised by it. I swiftly ushered our children into their respective rooms, not wanting to scare them with a potentially difficult childbirth. Meanwhile, Miss Cole had already helped the young miss to a spare room.
When I joined them, the poor woman was grasping onto anything she could reach, my coworker patting her pale skin with a cool cloth. This was not the New Year’s Eve we had expected, yet we couldn’t just abandon a fellow woman in such a vulnerable position. We both quietly wondered why she would seek medical care in an orphanage and not a hospital, but maybe, we thought, she was unable to continue to the nearest hospital.
The labor was a difficult process for all of us, the babys head simply wouldn’t push through, and the miss grew weaker and weaker on us. Having already been in an unfortunate condition upon arrival, we had expected it.
Another push from her, yet the child would slip back in. I wanted to help, but it was too dangerous. I felt enormous pity and anxiety throughout the labor, we were scared that neither her nor her unborn child would survive. She was so young, barely 19 it seemed, yet her body had been weakened, her spirit broken down, and her will for life was barely there. A shiver ran down my spine, not only from the howling wind, but also from her condition. Emaciated, a hollow face, and she generally seemed confused and uncomfortable by our presence.
After another hour, the moonlight being our only light source at the time, i could finally see it—the head was now fully out, and with another push, a surprisingly healthy baby boy had been born. He immediately began to cry, feeling cold and disoriented, much like his mother. I swaddled the sweet child in my apron, as we didn’t have anything else to shield the boy from the cold, and handed him over to his awaiting mother. I began crying, not out of relief, but pity for both the child and the young girl. She was bleeding heavily, and I knew she wouldn’t pull through. Had we had a doctor, maybe, she would have survived. Yet the baring labor was too much for her brittle body, the color fading from her thin face by the second. She rubbed the boys cheek, continuing to look at him as it it was a farewell. I think that she, too, knew that her life would end soon.
“Tom Marvolo Riddle”—she whispered quietly, speaking up for the first time during her short lived visit.
That’s the name she chose for the newborn—named after the boys father and maternal grandfather. Yet before we could ask her about the father’s whereabouts, her brown eyes closed for the last time, a tear rolling down her cheek. It seemed like the deceased mother had nobody in her life to support her. Maybe that’s why she came here, to ensure her child had a home.
She died, yet the boy lived. What a tragedy, something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives.
As if he sensed her last breath, the boy grew restless seconds after her passing. Not me or miss Cole were able to console little Tom. He cried for hours, trying to reach out for someone that was no longer there, his face visibly stressed. It broke our hearts, so we have decided to take him in, despite the shortage of food and supplies we have left.
I wonder how he will live with such knowledge of his mother’s passing.

Gaunt Family Headcanons
Hi I have thought way too much about Ominis and his immediate family, and have come up with entire personalities and lives for each of them and how they interact with Ominis, so please enjoy this info dump.
Warnings: Abuse, cruelty, murder, suicide...
Cassius Gaunt - The Father
The name in Latin means "hollow" or "vain". Born in 1836. He was an intimidating man. When both of his parents died, he was left with the family fortune---or what was left of it. He forbade his sister Noctua from touching a single knut of the squandered wealth, and it was only because she didn't argue she ever stayed in good graces. He took a young bride, one of his second cousins, the moment her parents deemed her old enough to marry. A blood purist to the core, he wanted to make sure his children all knew the importance of the blood in their veins---the blood of Salazar Slytherin.
He had a desperate need for control, one that overtook him completely. As he children grew, he was quick to anger and 'correct' them in their mistakes. Magic was often used as punishment, and he was an expert of bending his children to his will. He encouraged competition between them, challenging them who could learn dark spells the fastest, preform them the best---but always favored his eldest. It was his worst kept secret.
His youngest, on the other hand... He had no love for. Whatever short supply he'd been born with had been used on the others already, and when Ominis was born, born blind, he had no sympathy. Of course, he tried to control him, just like the others. But he hardly mattered, in the long run. As long as he stayed in line, bowed down to his unyielding hand, there wouldn't be a problem.
Aurora Gaunt - The Mother
The name Aurora is the Roman goddess of daybreak. Why this name? It's so in contrast with Noctua. Born in 1847, Aurora was a young wife. Merely 16 when Cassius laid claim on her. She was an unfit mother. Manipulative to the highest degree. She could do no wrong---she was sure to make that clear. Any wrong movement could lead to an outburst of yelling or tears.
Ominis had not been expected. She wasn't planning on another child. But she adored the attention of being pregnant again, so she played the part of an happily expecting mother. When he was born, all hell broke loose. She screamed and fretted, and she was sure they tried everything---everything to cure his blindness. It was to no avail. When she realized that would be how it was, no matter what, she once again played a part---this time of the overly worried mother of the small pitiful blind boy.
She would tell Ominis how lucky he was to have her as a mother, how any other woman would have thrown him out, left him for dead. He was so dreadfully difficult to raise, she'd tell him. She loved him, she said, even if no one else ever would.
Marvolo Gaunt - The Eldest
The name "Marvolo" implies something "marvelous." "Volo" can also be taken as "I want", and in combination, may be read "I want to be marvelous." Born in 1865, he was the oldest of the Gaunts, and therefore, the promised heir of all their wealth. This led to him taunting and belittling his siblings constantly. In his eagerness to please his father, he quickly mastered dark spells and wasn't shy about using them---even on his kin. He was biding his time, a spoiled and cruel child, just waiting for the wealth to be his.
If only there was any wealth to be had.
By the time he came of age, it had all been spent. They had to start selling things, letting go of servants, just to keep the manor. His whole life he had been trained and told to be the perfect heir of the Gaunts, that he would live a life in luxury from his name alone. The cruelty and anger that had always been within him grew stronger and stronger.
It was a relief for Ominis when Marvolo found a cousin to take to wife and left the house, as he had been experiencing the brunt of his anger. His wife died after the birth of his second child, Merope, a fact he held against his daughter for the rest of his life.
Calidus Gaunt - The Second
The word "Callidus" in Latin means clever---a trait that the second son had plenty of. Born in 1867, he grew and discovered he was second in everything. Nothing he did was ever enough to please their father, and he grew to resent everyone in his house.
His cruelty wasn't as outward and bold as Marvolo's. Instead, it was carefully plotted. He'd sow seeds to arguments, spreading lies and rumors and watching from afar as the others came crumbling down. He grew to love the chaos he started, and it became his specialty.
He especially loved making Ominis's life harder in any way he could. It was easy to take frustrations out on him---he was so helpless when he was young.
Soon, Calidus moved out, determined to start life on his own. Like his brother, he took another cousin to wife. He used his skills in cheating and lying to start a shady business, and found success. The money he earned fueled his drinking, a habit he had picked up after marriage. He was the first of the Gaunt siblings to die. No one had heard from him in a while, nor his wife. A few short years after their marriage they were found dead in their bed. It was chalked up to a shady deal gone wrong. No one was ever charged for their murders.
Vidia Gaunt - The Dearest
The name Vidia stemmed from the word "Invidia", meaning "envy" in latin. Born in 1868. As the only daughter, she was treated differently. She wasn't pushed as hard to become anything, to be anyone. But she took after her brothers nonetheless.
Like her mother, she quickly learned that her emotions were the key to getting what she wanted. She threw tantrums like no other, feeling a constant need for attention. She was the youngest for quite some time---and she reveled in it. It wasn't a surprise that she hated Ominis from the moment he was born.
He took her attention from their mother. While she wasn't cruel with her actions, she used her words, belittling him and blaming him for everything that went wrong.
When she was whisked away and married off to a pureblood family, she was desperate for children. But that never happened. She was never able to conceive. Her husband was killed in a duel about 10 years after their marriage, and she was suddenly utterly alone. The small house she called home burned down in a bright blaze late one night, and judging from the way her burnt corpse was sat comfortably in her armchair, it was ruled as a suicide.
Ominis Gaunt - The Unwanted
"Ominis" is Latin for "Omen." Born in 1875, seven years after the next youngest, it was made clear from a very young age that he was a mistake. This, in combination with his blindness, made it feel as if the whole world was against him. In most ways, it was.
There was only one small bit of hope in his life---his Aunt Noctua.
He allowed her to change him. To steer him off the dark path his siblings had walked down. He had decided from a young age that he didn't want to be anything like them---Noctua's help was all he needed to follow through with that. She taught him the difference between wrong and right, and he forever regretting the wrong he had inflicted on others when he felt powerless.
He refused to be cruel. Refused to lead with hate, or envy, or pride. He wanted to be good. So he was.
He disowned his family name, taking the name Sallow because that was the only family he had ever known.
Bonus - Aunt Noctua - The Savior
The word "Noctua" means "Night Owl" in Latin. Everything that Aurora, the day, was, she was the opposite. The days that Aurora declared she's had enough, she was done trying to raise such a difficult child, Noctua would take Ominis into her home and remind him that he was worth more than he could ever know.
She taught him to read braille. To use that spell with his wand. To live. To love.
She tried to help each of the Gaunt children---but none of them would listen. None besides Ominis. She poured her soul out to him, determined not to let this child slip away like the others had.
Noctua never married. She disappeared, and her brother couldn't be bothered to look for her. But she'd left her mark on Ominis, a mark that would live with him always.
ANYWAYS there's my info dump, thanks for reading. This is the version of the Gaunt family I have for my Ominis fic Safety, and while I'm only touching on bits and pieces of it in the fic itself, I wanted all the thoughts and plans I'd made to go somewhere so here you go lol.

Soooo, according to the play, Delphi grew up with death eaters, right? She probably wasn't allowed to learn anything about the muggle world. And children love the forbidden...
What if Delphini, in some (for the snakeman) cruel twist of fate, became absolutely obsessed with her muggle lineage instead.
I mean, just imagine:
Little Delphi at the dinner table: Who cares if I am a descendant of Slytherin and the house of Black? My great-grandparents fought in and survived world war one! And I am also a descendant of several kings! Isn't that the really impressive thing? Did you know that one of Mary Riddle's nieces was a famous film star? I want to be a filmstar too, when I grow up!
Rodolphus: *Just starts crying*
I just had to draw this version of her lol

Gaunt Family Headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr. and Mrs. Gaunt were cousins. Due to the dwindling Gaunt line, they consolidated the family tree by marrying, leaving Noctua as their only eligible bride. Mr. Gaunt, her older brother, wanted to marry her off to a great pureblood house.
All of the major houses within the Sacred 28 submitted sons to court Noctua, but she turned down each offer. Noctua decided to become a governess, which deeply insulted all of the families (an offense not forgotten by the time the Gaunt children started seeking out their own matches).
The Gaunts have five children: Marvolo, Cedrella, Dorcas, Apolline, and Ominis. Mr. Gaunt urged his wife to continue having children until he had both an heir and a spare to the Gaunt legacy. Marvolo was fifteen by the time Ominis was born.
Desperate after having three girls, Mrs. Gaunt turned to dark magic to ensure her next baby was a boy. She was relieved when the midwife showed her the beautiful blond baby boy, and was not surprised to find out he was blind (there is always an exchange when dealing with dark magic).
Marvolo and Cedrella never cared for Ominis; they were already at Hogwarts by the time he was born. Ominis got along quite well with his other sisters, Dorcas and Apolline, until they started playing with the unforgivable curses for fun.
Mr. Gaunt picked up a gambling habit after Ominis was born. The other pureblood families, eager to put the Gaunts in their place after Noctua's denial of their sons, start colluding with one another to swindle their fortune. Only the Blacks remained loyal to the Gaunts.
Noctua disappeared when Ominis was ten. It was quickly spread within the pureblood social circle that she had run off with a muggleborn lover; despite vehemently denying the accusations, Mr. Gaunt had no proof to back it up.
Noctua knew her mission to find the scriptorium would be dangerous, and made arrangements for her belongings just in case. She left her precious Slytherin locket to Ominis, her favorite nephew. Mrs. Gaunt read this in her will and decided to pocket the heirloom, believing it was better suited for one of the older children.
Due to their relationship with Headmaster Black, all of the older Gaunt children were granted permission to bring snake companions with them to Hogwarts. Ominis was the only one to not have a pet snake.
Mr. Gaunt faced immense pressure to get his daughters out of the house once they graduated from Hogwarts. Mrs. Gaunt just thought he was being picky with their matches, but truthfully he and Marvolo had to scrounge up galleons for their dowries.
A/N: I love thinking about the downfall of the Gaunt family and how they can go from the height of society to destitute by the time voldy is born. Also the idea of Noctua being an independent lady who refused to get married

In Bellatrix Voldemort saw his father again: handsome and rich. In Bellatrix Voldemort saw his mother again: a noble pure-blood witch. From her he had the love he never had from them, but he was too afraid of ending up like his mother and for this reason he never admitted his feelings: he could not bear to be rejected again.

Summer of 6th Year
Ominis x MC Rewrite
Summary - I hate, hate hate, thinking about Ominis with his family. I don’t like to think about what the summer between 5th and 6th year would have been like for him. Too upsetting. The boi deserves better. But I’m taking my own head canon of 5th year into account (part 5 of Blindsided shh) and suddenly it’s not as sad?
Warnings - Mostly just sad thinking about what could have happened during the summer but none of it is mentioned specifically
Word Count - 2393
~
The chug of the steam trains pistons started to fade into the distance as it continued on its journey. With the last train now gone that would mean all attending students to Hogwarts were on the grounds.
However, Ominis was yet to find Evelyn.
He swept his wand broadly across the platform at the remaining students idly chatting or waiting for their friends. With the crowd thinning further, he had hoped she had seen him and he would soon be sent hurtling to the ground in her embrace.
Perhaps she had decided not to return. After the 5th year they both shared, he couldn’t blame her. But his heart sank at the idea. Or maybe she had seen him, and ignored him entirely.
He couldn’t work out which was worse.
Garreth remained patrolling the bottom of the stairs leading out of Hogsmeade station, counting how many Weasleys were arriving and squinting at every new ginger kid that bounced towards the castle. As Ominis approached him, he eyed him cautiously. The Blonde Slytherin didn’t look like someone returning to Hogwarts but rather someone who had been sentenced to life in Azkaban. His features were heavy with fatigue and his deep set eyes blinked unenthusiastically in Garreth’s direction.
He looked, truly…
…Gaunt.
“Hello Garreth, you haven’t seen Evelyn have you?”
“Yeah, she’s just asked me the exact same question, she’sMerlin where has she gone?” Garreth peered over the sea of first years being ushered up to the castle to be sorted. “I swear I just saw her, she-“
“Ominis!”
And there it was.
The voice that calmed him like no other. The voice that could call to him even in the darkest of places. The voice he had heard rattling around his head for six long weeks, each time it would change and morph. Like he was slowly forgetting who she was.
But oh was it sweet now…
His Evelyn…
Garreth watched as Ominiss’ shoulders visibly relaxed and he immediately turned in the direction of her voice. He laughed at the twitch of Ominis’ lips threatening to break into a smile at the mere mention of his name.
Wand in hand he strode towards her, hearing the loud patter of her feet as she ran towards him. Before long, her arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him down to her height.
So small. He had forgot that too…
“I missed you so much” Evelyn muffled into his neck. Pocketing his wand quickly, his arms snaked around her. One along her waist, pulling her ever closer till there was no gap between them. The other soon joined cushioned behind her thighs as he scooped her clean off the ground. The elated scream that erupted from her lips vibrated through her chest where Ominis pressed his ear. He sighed contently.
Her heartbeat.
He didn’t need to be this close to hear it, of course. But why not when she was so willing? It hammered strong and erratic against his head, rattling his brain.
A reminder she was alive.
“Oh you have no idea how much I’ve missed you” he muffled into her arm, wrapped around his head. She cradled him as much for stability as for comfort.
When the pair broke away, minutes after, the platform was almost empty. Garreth bid them both a quick farewell before his departure. No doubt off to watch the horde of Weasleys get sorted into Gryffindor.
Both Ominis and Eve decided to take the longer, more scenic route back to the castle, catching up on their summer in a more private and beautiful setting.
“So how is Anne?” He asked earnestly.
“She’s doing really well” Eve beamed “Her fits are down to 2 or 3 times a day, depending on what we’ve been doing, if she’s feeling well. There’s a lot of factors but…she’s getting there”
“And Sebastian?” Her stride slowed somewhat at his follow up question
“I haven’t heard from him” she linked her arm with his giving it a little squeeze. The closest thing they could get to a hug whilst they slowly ascended to Hogwarts. “Have you?”
“Not even one owl” Ominis replied blankly, finding it easier to lie about his summer than offload his own problems onto the already fretting Evelyn.
“We did the right thing. Yes? Yes.” She fiddled with her fingers around his arm, picking at her nails as she was known to do. He placed his hand over hers to stop her anxious habit.
“He probably just needs some time” Ominis said convincing himself as much as he was convincing her.
An uncomfortable silence crept up on the pair.
So it was going to be like this again
“I thought you would have visited…” Evelyn’s voice was quiet, barely there as she effortlessly broke his heart in two.
“I…was busy” Ominis lied
“I went to Feldcroft to see you. See if Sebastian had returned and how you were faring…You were never there”
Anne spoke of Ominis often. It seemed they were close. Annoyingly close if Evelyn was being honest. The rancid taste of jealousy rose on her throat whenever the sick Sallow said his name with a tone of affection. Despite that though she had proved to be a valuable resource of information about him. About how they’d spend summers together. How they often slept under the stars whilst the Sallow twins described different constellations for their blind counter part.
And how vile and twisted his family were.
Surely he would rather return to an empty homestead than his family
Evelyn’s stomach remained constantly in flux over her summer. Anne: Cursed. Sebastian: missing. Ominis: unaccounted for.
“I was out rather a lot. Holidays. Day trips. The like…” He lied once more. Easily.
If he were to tell anyone it would be Evelyn. She got the Scriptorium location from him. He trusted her. Right?
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. He would tell her in his own time but it was killing her, this unknown.
So they simply walked back in silence.
~
The sorting ceremony happened with no major catastrophes or drama. As everyone filed out to go about their nightly routine, find their common room or just get reacquainted with one another, Ominis could hear a gossipy bunch of younger students just ahead. The topic of their conversation piqued his interest away from the infamous student still clinging to his arm.
“Who is that? They weren’t in the hall?” The young Ravenclaw said
“Nope not at our table either. That is green isn’t it? Slytherin?” The Slytherin girl sneered
“Oh that’s just Sebastian Sallow” The eldest student replied.
Ominis froze.
No mistaking it. The habitual tapping of his foot. The impatient huff of air on every second breath. The smell of smoke, embers and coffee.
There, stood leaning against the wall in the foyer between the parted sea of students, was his oldest friend. Ominis remained stationary. Stuck in place by a mixture of emotions none quite strong enough to rise to the surface.
One thing rattled around his head more than anything though…
How dare he?
“What’s wrong?” The tiny voice of Evelyn rang hollow in his ears as Sebastian pushed himself off the wall and made his way over.
Eve followed Ominis’ sightless gaze and her eyes met with Sebastian. She stared at him, unknowing of what she wanted to do. She missed her friend. She wanted to embrace the boy whose sister she now cared for. The boy who showed her that secret place deep in the belly of Hogwarts. The boy who showed her spells and mysteries and new places across the region. The boy whose smile, that was currently plastered across his face, had manipulated her into doing stupid and unforgivable things.
She blinked away images of Anne. She saw her in Sebastian face more clearly now she was almost free of that curse. The nights she stayed up with her over those six weeks, well into the early hours, crying over the loss of her brother.
Now she wanted to hit him.
Make him feel a fraction of the pain he had caused his sister in his absence. Anne’s voice sang in her ear;
‘Us Sallows are thick-brained stubborn mules. He just needs time as much as I need time. I don’t want to see him right now, but I miss him. Does that make sense?’
Eve’s hand fell from Ominis as she hugged herself tightly. Fighting every fibre in her being from doing…something.
“Hello you two. Long time no see” His voice was thick with a confidence only he could muster.
“‘Long time no see’?” Ominiss’ signature sharp tone returned, his voice rising in volume causing Sebastian to flinch somewhat and a plethora of nosy student to turn their way.
“I just mean-“
“Ominis please-“ Evelyn begged seeing the last few students leaving, turn to look at the scene. She glared at them until they realised the drama, wasn’t worth their life. She was the new fifth year after all.
“She wrote you. She went to Feldcroft. Where were you? She put herself in danger for you! Again!” Ominis took a step toward Sebastian, his wand blinking faster giving him a better layout of the situation he found himself in.
“I didn’t ask you too” Sebastian followed suite, both boys leaning forward as though a physically fight was only moments away. Then Evelyn realised...the last time they saw one another, Ominis had his hand wrapped around Sebastian’s throat, and his wand buried harshly in his temple.
“Don’t rope me into this. I’ve had to silently worry for six weeks, Sebastian. I couldn’t write. I couldn’t visit. I couldn’t leave because I had to spend my summer with family” Sebastian retreated slightly mouth going slack as he processed what he said
“You didn’t stay with Eve?”
“Why would I do that to her? She’s already tending to your sister. And you didn’t exactly extend me an invitation like you have every other year” Ominis’ anger slipped a fraction, betraying the hurt behind his words, his brows pulled upwards.
“You didn’t stay at Feldcroft?” Eve yanked at Ominis’ arm forcing him to face her.
“No I…”
“Ominis…” Sebastian reached out to Ominiss’ shoulder, placing a comforting hand upon the taller Slytherin.
“Are you okay?” Eve said taking his cheek in her hand. Ominis didn’t answer.
His head filled with those six dreaded weeks. Waking to screaming as they tortured yet another muggle. Being denied meals for refusing to participate. And of course the immediate punishment. Crucio. That word had been uttered more over those six weeks than he cared to remember.
Though he couldn’t really.
Whether it was his minds self preservation or had chosen to forget, he didn’t know. Those weeks were a blur. All he could remember was pain, the fetid smell of that old Manor House and incessant questioning of ‘The Hero of Hogwarts’.
Of course they had heard about her power. and of course, they wanted it for themselves. Thankfully, from what he could gather, they had no clue who she was. Neither witch or wizard, muggleborn or pureblood. They didn’t know. And Ominis would keep it that way.
Whilst Ominis’ mind was reeling, the anguished expression on his face evidence of that, Sebastian was pacing, muttering to himself over and over.
What he always did when he was thinking.
Dangerous.
“So I wasn’t at Feldcroft because I went to look for Solomon” Sebastian spoke with a determination that didn’t suit the topic he had randomly brought up. “I couldn’t find him. His friends, those that he had left, old Aurors, I even asked Sharp for some contacts. Nothing. I assume he’s took another name and fled. Anyway, that means Feldcroft is mine now…”
Sebastian turned to his friend, all determination and stubbornness leaving him. All that was left was compassion and love for a boy he failed to protect. Like he always had.
“You live with me now.” He grabbed Ominis by the shoulders giving him a singular light shake.
“Sebastian-“
“No! Even if you don’t want to, I-I-I can make myself scarce…or at least it’s an option. You don’t have to go back there. You can’t…I can’t protect you there. I can’t…” Sebastian searched Ominis’ eyes for any resistance. Worse. There was none. He’d given up.
“It’s not that simple” Ominis spoke quietly, heavy with despair
“Or me. You can stay with me.” Eve smiled up at him before pulling herself into his chest, wrapping her arms around his waist “You’ve spoken very little about your family, I know it’s bad but... I’m so sorry. I should’ve known. I should’ve offered to-”
“Shhh” Ominis hushed softly, his arm wrapping limply around her shoulders and smoothing her soft hair against her head. Sebastian followed suit and wrapped his arms around them both and squeezing.
After a moment, Ominis relented his shaky arms wrapped around the two of them, resting his chin on Evelyns head.
“I’ve missed you both so much” Ominis finally spoke, his voice quiet and not quite carrying the normal gravitas that it did. It was broken. And soft.
Sebastian was the first to pull away, though kept his hands upon his two best friends. His smile was charming, as it always was.
“I give it till the middle of first term. Then you’ll be sick of us again” Sebastian grinned pulling away from them.
“Please, tomorrow afternoon and he’ll ban us from the Undercroft” Eve smirked, giving Ominis one last squeeze before releasing him.
“Now” Sebastian rubbed his hands together “Is there any of that food left? Unlike some people when I’m late I don’t like drawing attention to it and I’m hungry!”
Ominis sighed and for once allowed the twitch of his lips to take over.
It felt good to be back.
~
Bonus:
“She wrote me six times over summer” Sebastian burst through the door of the boys dorm, a huge knapsack in one hand and a small stack of letters in the other.
“You sound mad about that” Ominis put his book down, knowing no more reading would be done if Sebastian was in a mood
“I am! Look at this” He began to shovel the contents of the bag onto Ominiss’ bed. “These are all for you! There’s at least thirty!”
“Oh!” He felt his cheeks start to burn, feeling the parchment between his fingers
“Honestly it’s as though we didn’t commit multiple crimes together”
