Denim Journal - 07/1992 to 08/1993

I went through all of high school with no journal. At the time I didn’t think it was a big deal. I was trying to be all grown and I didn’t need a diary like some overly emotional young kid.

But high school sucked. There was fun stuff for sure, but I was a weirdo, overweight, and had a difficult time socially and emotionally.

I dropped out of high school, and within two weeks of starting my first college classes, I found out I was pregnant. Looking back, I kind of wish I’d spent more time with a childhood diary and acting silly instead of rushing to be an adult.

The next journal I bought was one I had seen at Tattered Cover, a local bookstore in Colorado where I had done holiday work before I discovered my pregnancy. I had wanted to journal when I worked there, but was working to save money for holiday gifts. A close friend and I were book shopping months after I’d stopped working there, and I saw the exact journal and was super excited to buy it.

I still don’t know why I was so excited, I think it might’ve been the denim texture. I loved the way it felt against my fingers when I would scratch against it. But on the whole it was kind of boring in appearance.

I loved having a journal again. I loved writing down stupid things so I could try to stop blurting out stupid things in conversations.

The first thing I struggled with was the blank pages and thinking what I had to say was stupid. So I started decorating pages in advance so they wouldn’t be blank.

I drew and colored things.

I collected little pieces of ephemera that amused me.

On of my favorite pieces of odd ephemera was a fortune cookie fortune that is kind of weird, but became a favorite because I kept getting the same fortune. This weird little “Every man is a volume if you know how to read him” fortune is in a couple more journals because it amused me so much each time I got it.

I took photographs and spruced up my journal. This is one of my favorites of my son turning one year old and celebrating with his own tiny cake all for himself.

The other thing I did on a regular basis was read the newspaper as often as I could, and clip things out when I had the time. Anything from silly comic strips…

…to the slightly more political comic strips…

…to the overtly political strips.

Up until this point, my political leanings were pretty leftist, but I kind of believed in the system. But throughout this journal I can see myself slowly becoming less and less trusting of the system. In my head I truly believed (and sometimes I still believe today) that enough voices could speak out and make change. But so much happened and I clipped out this Clarence Thomas (fuck that guy) cartoon, and some of my other article clip outs about the Rodney King trial, and other things that made me furious, I can see myself becoming more ad more leftist and my love/hate relationship with civics is very clear through the journal.

It is still one of my favorites journals. I think because I cannot put my hands on my little Hello Kitty journal it has become my physical representation of my beginning thought process and my progress toward some kind of adult behaviors.

always happy about the fact that in 2012, mikey often asked donnie questions if he didn't understand something and donnie always answered no matter what

this can be seen in a bunch of episodes but my favorite example of it it's the one in half shell heroes where mikey is extremely excited to be in the museums and is the one actively asking donnie questions about the exhibits they saw and also actively listening to donnie's explanation (before raph got silly lmao). he was very excited to learn!!!

And while it's true that mikey would lose interest quite fast if the explanation got too lengthy with too many technical terms, it doesn't change the fact that he does retain the info donnie is always rambling on about different things!!! (even if mikey himself doesn't notice he's doing it lol) and also i find it very sweet that no matter if donnie himself got annoyed, donnie would always answer the questions. no matter what. he would always try to explain if he didn't understand something

This is prob because mikey is the one brother who is often seeking out donnie to pass time around him Meaning that donnie might have used mikey as his rubber ducky whenever mikey hangs out with him while he's working (explained him a lot of his experiments and theories while trying to solve them himself and in this way mikey also learnt in the process WHILE spending time with his brother! win win!)

it also helps donnie because accompanies him while not letting him get lonely in his lab 24/7, sometimes explaining things to someone makes it better to understand it yourself AND it's shown in the comics that donnie is quite used to his brothers just Living as background noise and literally cannot function without it lmao

They are literally the two smart kids in the family even if none of them notice it and it's all because mikey looks up to his brother and is like an sponge with donnie around. donnie is actively teaching mikey and mikey is learning! even if they have no idea they are doing it

Back in book 5 when they’re stuck in the wall and they see Quan Yizhen’s head sticking out Xie Lian is like “that was probably Qi Ying!” and Hua Cheng doesn’t immediately know what he’s talking about. Hua Cheng, guy with all knowledge of the known universe (or at least the heavens) at his fingertips, who can recite centuries old poems and teach himself to read dead languages and historical contexts nobody in the past millennia has experienced, has to think for a second before he can remember who the fuck “Qi Ying” is. This is literally The Guy whose existence was the center of his best subordinate’s main trauma, and he knows all the context to their falling out, yet nowhere in his eidetic memory is he “Qi Ying”, nor is he “Quan Yizhen” nor is he even “the martial god of the west”. When Hua Cheng remembers him, it’s “Oh, the one with the curly hair. I guess that was him.” What do you mean “I guess”??? This just shows that Quan Yizhen is such a non-threat, so inconsequential to him or his cause that he didn’t even register a name for the kid, much less a title or role. Everyone else is out here murdering, forging, stealing, backstabbing, while Yizhen is just out here living his best life. Kicking and punching, mid-day napping, no scandals, no need to worry about him. Certified little guy award.

Playing together as real friends

imagining Charlie having an Oh moment when she finds Vaggie napping in a chair one day, early on, with Razzle and Dazzle sprawled out over Vaggie like they're trying to cover as much of her small body as they can with their own even smaller ones-

Charlie pulls out her phone and stealthily inches closer for a picture (she's doesn't' wanna wake them she swears) (she's just never seen something so cuuuuute-)

but a floor board squeaks and Razzle cracks an eye open to glower while Dazzle shushes her

and Charlie stops

There's another Oh... moment, because they've never shushed her before. They were brought to life to keep her safe and they've always only cared about that one thing- it took months for them to stop following Vaggie around the house suspiciously, like they always did with anyone Charlie tried having a relationship with, like a pair of silent, plush guard dogs-

(glaring at Vaggie from shadows, from across the table at breakfast and dinner, from the pillows directly over her head when Charlie finally convinced her maybe sharing a bed would help with the night terrors)

-but that'd all changed, at some point. Only, Charlie hadn't noticed until now

now she does. Now suddenly, she wonders

Charlie creeping over on silent, careful hooves, to gently stroke between the tiny wings of her childhood friends, looking from them to Vaggie's relaxed and sleeping face (getting a little lost watching her, for moment) (reaching out to tuck back a strand of the hair Vaggie is growing out long, accidently stroking Vaggie's cheek, forgetting to take her hand away afterwards) (the longer hair is hard not to play with, she excuses)

Charlie leaning in and asking Razzle and Dazzle, in the softest whisper-

"....are you keeping her safe for me?"

a pair of soft little churrs rising up in answer. Two little plush demons, snuggling closer to Vaggie as Vaggie frowns in her sleep, shifting restlessly, stirring-

Charlie freezing bc she has NO idea what to say if Vaggie wakes up and finds her- well. looming kinda?? while Vaggie SLEEPS???

it feels different than just already being there when Vaggie wakes up in the night, different in how waking up like that was normal when they'd gone to bed together, but crouching down to STARE at someone like this, with your hand still on her cheek, scared to move it in case that REALLY wakes her up when she DIDN'T get much sleep last night and DIDN'T wake you up that time for some reason so you couldn't snuggle her or make her feel better and now you might startle her instead or make her feel awkward which you hate- you don't want her to ever feel awkward around you-

it doesn't matter though

because Vaggie settles down again, as Dazzle croons quietly and Razzle reaches out a little paw to gently press her arm

she used to jump and flinch a little every time she saw them

when did that change?

these days she flicks little snacks at them from off her plate, no matter how many times Charlie reminds her they have their OWN plates and their OWN donuts and are just begging to get ATTENTION, the little show-stealers-

(not like Charlie's doing that too by complaining) (noooooo) (not like she grins like an idiot when Vaggie smiles and says cute things deserve a little extra attention, while looking over at Charlie instead)

these days any annoying demon who comes looking to curry favor with Lucifer (or trying pulling one over Morningstar's "naïve" daughter) gets pinned by THREE dangerous glares while waiting at the door for Charlie to hurry downstairs and meet them

(or rather shoo them away before they say something too not nice and Vaggie grabs her spear while Razzle and Dazzle get within ankle biting range)

when she thinks about it, things have been different for a while now

better. They've been better, and Charlie still doesn't know when or how it happened, and maybe that part doesn't matter so much anyway

in the present, Charlie takes the chance to retrieve her hand (reluctantly..) so she can slip off her jacket and tuck it around the three of them- Razzle, Dazzle. Vaggie- her two old friends and one new but very important one-

important enough to be considered part of her, by them as were created to protect her

and that's a new idea too. but she likes it a lot, she thinks

she likes being part of a family again

Vaggie wakes up a good solid two hours of nap time later with Razzle and Dazzle draped over her like furry boas and Charlie's head in her lap, a former Exorcist absolutely COVERED in cuddly demons-

she stays completely still for another hour more afterwards, stiff neck be damned, watching the three of them sleep. Smiling.

.... (it's only the three of them, later)

(when vaggie flutters up and finds razzle curled up on dazzle's memorial, the night after the battle. when she tucks him into her shoulder and heads back to her and charlie's rebuilt room. as a relieved and teary eyed charlie scoops him up and the three up them huddle together under vaggie's reformed wings)

(it's only three of them... but part of why charlie cries that night is knowing dazzle did his job- vaggie is still here)

(dazzle did his best. and for everything charlie lost, the old hotel, too many of the cannibals who followed her, almost all the egg bois, sir pentious, dazzle himself, the faith that she could solve all this without anyone getting hurt...)

(she didn't lose the part of herself that'd held her together the night before the battle, held so many other times, through family calls and failed meetings with heaven) (she didn't lose vaggie-)

(and some of charlie's tears that night, for dazzle, are grateful)

(he died trying to keep charlie safe. and he did. he did)

The thing that gets me about history and humanity is that you never know what is immortalized, and the things that will be immortalized are things you would never think.

I saw a person sharing a new tattoo, and it was one of Onfim's drawings. A boy who lived so long ago he is barely a blip now, but his drawings meant so much to people that somebody is now permanently marked in their skin with one of those drawings. Do you ever look at the things you make and just sit there and wonder if this is the thing that future people look at? Do you ever look at your art, your writing, your schoolwork, or anything that is yours and just wonder who will find it, who will fall in love with a piece of your humanity and become overwhelmed with emotion over? It's not unlikely. It's not totally unlikely that somebody will find a piece of you in the distant future and devoid of any other context of who you were will still love you because you were here. You were here, and you are still here, even hundreds or thousands of years later. Treat yourself with the same love that so many have for dear Onfim.

the issue with discussions of "lore" is that people are thinking about/defining "lore" completely wrong. people beg for lore thinking that there must be universe-altering events constantly happening, and without that the story is not progressing. but large events like q!cellbit's kidnapping or q!roier and everyone going to rescue bobby are only one aspect of "lore" right?

to me, "lore" is anything that tells us something about the way the universe works or who the characters are that was not already known. q!foolish being batman? LORE!!! richarlyson hating baths? LORE!!!

people refuse to take these silly one-off events/comments and dismiss them in favor of major lore events, but that small stuff is necessary for the big stuff to pan out. I mean, without small things like richarlyson telling q!roier that q!cellbit easily falls for flirting, would we have built up to the wedding? without Tallulah/everyone on the server teasing q!quackity about his crush on q!wilbur, would we have had the "wilbur party" explosion?

at the end of the day, 99% of what the creators are doing is contributing to the lore (of at least their character if not the whole server) because they are roleplaying characters and the things they say are part of their character and become their lore. stop hating on creators for "not doing lore" when they are actively taking care of their egg or creating builds or doing silly schemes. because that is still lore that can and often will culminate in these larger narratively satisfying events!

And, because I am normal and don't think about these guys for hours every day, here's some backstory:

When Cross first joined, Killer actually took to him pretty quickly (Dust and Horror did not get warm welcomes). Which is to say he immediately started flocking to Cross to annoy him and compete with him on missions. Cross didn't have the benefit of knowing Killer already to see these were affectionate annoyances, so to him Killer was just some guy who had a problem and wouldn't leave him alone.

During that mission, Nightmare was calling a retreat when he put a hand to his chest and realised the heart locket was gone. Killer saw him looking all around frantically and had a good idea what was lost, since it was the one thing Cross would absolutely not part with since he joined. So, Killer ran back out towards the stars to look for it, because why learn self preservation now. It was the first thing to convince Cross that Killer actually was being (relatively) friendly, despite all the annoyances.

because it's probably the only time he's managed to get Killer to shut up lol

James smiles, all pretty and innocent, as if he isn't the devil incarnate. Regulus takes a step back and feels the backs of his knees hit the sofa. Fear grips his body and he raises his arms to protect himself against the coming onslaught.

It's too late though, and all he can do is squeal as James' cake smeared hands grip his face. There's chocolate everywhere, from his chin to his bloody curls. He hears the click of Barty's camera somewhere in the background, knows that this moment has been immortalised forever, but the only thing he can pay attention to is the way James is looking at him. Like he's something precious.

"Happy birthday Love," James says, voice soft and adoring and just for them.

Later, when the party's over and Regulus has scrubbed his face raw trying to get the cake off, the two of them lay in bed together. James is nearly asleep, head resting on top of Regulus' stomach as he runs his fingers through his hair.

"Hey James," he whispers, fingers stilling where they are. "You know I love you right?" James only hums in response, too tired to form the proper words.

"Good. Because if you ever pull something like that again I will be divorcing you."
