Random Plot Points
A little about me as a writer, I love daydreaming about adventure stories. I usually know the general set up and larger plot points but oftentimes struggle with the how, how do characters get from point A to point B.
So, I made a list of random challenges for my characters that I look at when I'm stuck.
Sharing in case helpful to others! (intended for adventure, sci-fi, fantasy stories)
characters are delayed/blocked/experience a natural disaster (storm, fire, flood, avalanche, earthquake, epidemic, etc) (BONUS and forced to take a detour from the original path)
character(s) is trapped (quick sand, fall through ice, in room filling with poison, on sinking ship, in a trash compactor on the Death Star, etc) (BONUS- fall into hidden room and discover something)
characters go to a festival/ball/party/political summit (where inevitably it all goes wrong)
character(s) overhears a secret (at bar, at party, from a whispered conversation below them in a stairway, etc)
characters are attacked by an animal or mysterious force
characters(s) caught in a mob/riot
character wins/loses something in a bet
character is brainwashed or possessed
character is stranded/lost
character is poisoned
character succumbs to injury or illness
characters are chased/ attacked by antagonists
character is captured or arrested (and needs to be rescued)
character is kidnapped and kidnappers make a demand for their release (financial ransom, exchange of information, prisoner exchange, etc)
character(s) go undercover to retrieve information
characters decide to steal something they need for their quest (weapon, magical object, money, information, etc). (BONUS- time for a well-planned heist!)
characters need to protect/ retrieve/ destroy something
characters uncover a network of spies (up to you if they're unexpected allies or antagonists)
characters discover hidden passageway, room, ruins etc that leads to an important clue
characters forced to hide from someone/something
characters need to escape
characters lured into trap set by villain (BONUS if the villain doesn't even care who wins but only goaded them to learn how a magical object works, the extent of heroes powers, emergency response system of a government, etc)
characters set trap for villain (BONUS- use someone or something important as bait) (if in Act 2, they fail)
characters reveal critical information to villain in disguise
a character is mistaken for someone else (and then is wrongfully arrested, receives information not intended for them, etc)
characters receive help (hitch a ride, get help hiding from captors, get help escaping somewhere, etc) from an unlikely new ally
characters forced to team up with an unlikely ally/ morally grey character, etc
characters learn something from simple library research (an oldie but a goodie)
characters just literally just stumble upon or witness something important (secret weapon, secret society etc)
characters uncover a secret map/ coded message on the back of an old unassuming document (time for a classic treasure hunt!)
someone escapes from prison (an old villain or an old ally) that changes the quest
someone is being blackmailed (or otherwise forced to act against the protagonists)
someone is discredited (rumor, disinformation campaign etc)
something stolen from your characters
something (document, magical object, money) turns out to be fake
OR, something unassuming turns out to have special powers or meaning
something is hacked (defense system, infrastructure, bank, private records, etc)
something critical is attacked (important bridge, port, bank/ financial system, safehouse, capitol building, character's familial home, etc.)
a computer virus is unleashed
a biological weapon is unleashed
a piece of information the characters believed was true, is false
an ancient myth turns out to be true
a secret is made public
A law is changed or a vote on a critical piece of legislation loses/wins
a political opponent wins an election/ a political ally loses an election
character(s) help a passerby (from raiders, local tyrant, beast, mystical force, etc)
characters "follow the money" and realize someone who was thought to be their ally is actually working for... (crime syndicate, villain, local tyrant etc)

Take what you can. Give nothing back...pt.2
Part 1
Throughout his time spent on Ramshackle, Rollo got to see how Homura's crew function and how Captain Homura commands them. Of course, he also got to meet the other Seven Sovereigns of the NRSeas and hear their very understandable and harsh words they had about him and the Government.
Captain Rosehearts suggests Captain Homura should keep him in the brig for the time being. Captain Kingscholar voices that they should just put him on a lifeboat with some food and water and let him find his own way back. Captain Ashengrotto asks if they can use him for a trade deal. Captain Al-Asim talks about letting Rollo return home only for Second-Mate Viper to cut him off, stating that it's a bad idea to leave him to his own devices.
Captain Schoenheit agrees and scolded Captain Homura for even rescuing him in the first place. Captain Shroud meekly spoke about how it'll be best to just keep Rollo far away from them. Finally, Captain Draconia speaks calmly about the manner of exploding Government ships in the area, which draws in everyone's attention.
While they refuse to talk about that while in the presence of Rollo, they shoo him out of the room and slam the door. Once the summit ends, Yuu places him back on Ramshackle and they said towards one of the islands where he can return home.
....Over time, Rollo finds himself growing attached to the crew and their antics and they welcome him as a makeshift member. He also sees how Captain Yuu is quick to rush towards the aid of defenseless ships if they're being attacked by another pirate ship. Rollo also finds himself growing closer to the Captain of Ramshackle and soon enough....falls in love.
Now, returning to the home port is tough, but Rollo does it in order to relinquish his title and join Yuu's pirate crew. It's there he learns that he was supposed to die that die in order to lure in Yuu...who is the daughter of Tia Dalma....
"Calypso...."
"Indeed, and due to the fact that you failed to bring her to us..."
Searing pain explodes in Rollo's chest and he looks to see a sword had been plunged into his heart.
"You are no longer of use to us."

On the summit of the East Cliff the new searchlight was ready for experiment, but had not yet been tried. The officers in charge of it got it into working order, and in the pauses of the inrushing mist swept with it the surface of the sea. Once or twice its service was most effective, as when a fishing-boat, with gunwale under water, rushed into the harbour, able, by the guidance of the sheltering light, to avoid the danger of dashing against the piers. As each boat achieved the safety of the port there was a shout of joy from the mass of people on shore, a shout which for a moment seemed to cleave the gale and was then swept away in its rush.
The searchlight is important as a plot device to allow us to 'see' how Dracula brings the ship to land even in the midst of the storm. But in-universe, this is another lovely moment of people being good to one another. They are all invested in saving whoever they can from the storm (Dracula), they cheer at each victory. Loud enough to "cleave the gale" (to halt him) for a moment each time, before their voices are overwhelmed again.
This is also another moment of modernity/technology against ancient magic/nature*. The searchlight is new, operating it is an experiment. And the use of this bright modern light is able to cut through the darkness Dracula has brought, to save people from the death he would have brought them. Of course, none of them are his targets and if they were this wouldn't have worked, but just as background characters saving other background characters helps support the theme of people helping one another, I think Dracula's focus on his own needs leading to plenty of deaths he might not even notice or care about is really consistent with his role in the story. He's the main villain, he's a monster who causes very direct and personal pain, yes. But he's also a vector. Suffering and death travels with him. Sometimes he causes it, almost casually (the mother he killed), sometimes he doesn't even particularly notice it (the people who die in this storm), sometimes it is a ripple effect from something he deliberately did (I shan't say right now). But even before his physical arrival in Whitby, the clouds gather overhead, the ominous tone builds - and now that he is here, things will go wrong. It's just what happens around him. But it can be stopped. At least some of it. At least some people can be saved, and that's reason enough to cheer... even if your voices are lost in the gale again shortly after.
(Speaking of: Dracula as the storm. The storm silencing people's voices. Themes~)
* Though the caveat here is always of course that Dracula himself is being innovative/modern too, in his own way. He's crossing running water, all by himself! In fact, it's possible the searchlight helps guide him in to shore better as well, and if so that plays into a whole nother thing about people trying their best and Dracula taking advantage to harm others. And then those who know feel guilty about their role as his unintentional/coerced aid...
#dracula daily#count dracula#dracula locals#<- i should probably get a different tag here. right now it's kinda just become all the background characters#dracula meta#my meta

Turkey has discreetly imposed a comprehensive ban on the export of weapons and defence-related items to India, one of the world’s leading arms importers, to show its support for Pakistan, India’s main rival in South Asia.[...]
“India, for example, is one of the world’s top five arms importers, a massive market, importing close to $100 billion. However, due to our political circumstances and our friendship with Pakistan, our Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not give us positive feedback on exporting any products to India, and consequently, we do not grant any permits to our companies in this regard,” he said.[...]
Turkey and India are at odds over a proposed initiative introduced by India, the United States and the European Union at the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi on September 9, 2023. The initiative seeks to establish a substantial economic corridor linking Europe with the Middle East and India via rail and sea routes. It aims to connect India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, Israel and the EU through strategically placed shipping ports and an extensive railway network.
Excluded from this corridor, Turkey openly expressed discomfort with the initiative, which it believes undermines its role as a trade hub and favors Greece and other regional competitors. Instead, Turkey supports China’s expansive Belt and Road projects.
Ankara is also advancing the realization of an alternative route, known as the Development Road, which aims to connect Europe and the Middle East through Turkey. “We say there can be no corridor without Turkey. The most suitable route for traffic from east to west must pass through Turkey,” said Erdogan on his return flight from India last year.
Erdogan said they are discussing a corridor that goes from Iraq, Qatar and Abu Dhabi through Turkey to Europe. The corridor is a 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) transportation route comprising railways, motorways and pipelines. It will stretch from Iraq’s Faw Port in Basra to the Turkish port of Mersin and is estimated to cost $20 billion.
Turkey’s anti-Indian policies have prompted New Delhi to seek alliances with countries where Turkey faces challenges in its neighborhood, such as Greece, Cyprus and Armenia, in order to send a message to Ankara that it is prepared to play hardball. As a result, security, military and intelligence cooperation among India, Greece, Cyprus and Armenia has been significantly enhanced in recent years.

On 26th July 1513 James IV responded to pleas for assistance from France and declared war on England.
While most Scots will know a wee bit about The Battle of Flodden, few will understand the background behind the fateful day for arguably the most succesful of the Stewart Kings, I will fill in a few of the blanks in this longish post.
It wasn’t all Flodden, it only ended up there. The build up to the cataclystic battle began in the years beforehand as James started building his great navy. Yes the Auld Alliance is often used as an excuse to go to war with the English, but other factors also played a hand, not least the that the English Navy had seized two Scottish ships, there was also the case that Scotland was due part of an unpaid dowry for his Queen, Margaret Tudor.
James IV was a flamboyant King, it has been called a Golden age for Scotland by historians, he lavished his wife with gifts, now it might not sound much nowadays, and no disrespect to the town, but he gave her Kilmarnock as a wedding present! They also loved holidays around his Kingdom and in particular James and Margaret enjoyed making music together and listening to professional players.
With that he was also making sure his country was protected and he put together a most impressive navy, two huge ships were at the centre of it, The Great Michael, and the Margaret, the fleet numbered 13 larger ships and they carried an armée de mer (‘army of the sea’) of thousands of troops, about 10 smaller ships sailed with the fleet, and it must have been some sight, about two dozen ships sailing out The Firth of Forth.
James Hamilton, first Earl of Arran, the Kings cousin was admiral of the fleet. James was aboard the Michael as the ships sailed round North Scotland past the Hebrides attacking the English stronghold of Carrickfergus in Ulster. After looting Carrickfergus the Earl of Arran’s fleet returned to Scotland, berthing at the port of Ayr. These events are described by the 16th century Scottish historian George Buchanan in his History of Scotland :
“James, king of Scotland, although he had determined to remain neuter, yet being inclined to favour his ancient ally, resolved to send the fleet, formerly mentioned, as a gift to the French queen, Anne, that it might appear rather as a pledge of friendship, than any assistance for carrying on the war.
…having heard that great preparations were making for a maritime war, James determined to send the fleet, we have mentioned, to Anne immediately, that it might, if possible, arrive there before the war broke out. He appointed James Hamilton, earl of Arran, admiral, and ordered him to sail with the first fair wind ; but Hamilton, a simple kind of man, more acquainted with the arts of peace than of war, either afraid of danger, or through his natural indolence, having delayed to go to France, landed at Carrick-Fergus, a town in Ireland, opposite Galloway, and after pillaging the place, burned it, and set sail for Ayr, a harbour of Kyle in Scotland, as if he had performed a great exploit.”
Less than a month after the royal fleet left the Firth of Forth under the command of the Earl of Arran, King James led a massive invasion of north-east England. The prime military objective of the campaign, the taking of Norham castle, was achieved within a week. In early September the Scottish army moved south, capturing the smaller castles of Etal and Ford before encamping on the summit of Flodden Hill where they faced the army of the Earl of Surrey.
The invasion achieved the wider objective of drawing English forces from northern France. The Earl of Surrey was joined by his son, Lord Thomas Howard, who had returned from France with a force of a thousand men, according to the 16th century Chronicle of Edward Hall. Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie gives a higher figure, narrating how James IV invaded England “for lufe of France” prompting Henry VIII to despatch six thousand of his best men from France to England.
On the 9th of September the Scots moved from the summit of Flodden Hill towards the nearby Branxton Hill in an attempt to deny the English the high ground. The Earl of Surrey had manoeuvred his forces to the foot of Branxton Hill, blocking a northwards retreat back to Scotland and forcing the Scots to fight.
I shall leave it there and pick up the rest in September when we will lament the loss of “The Floo'ers 'o the Forest.

Nina reads Dracula 🦇
August 8th
Starting today off with a newspaper clipping, pasted by Mina in her journal:
One of the greatest and suddenest storms on record has just been experienced here, with results both strange and unique.
🎶 STOOOoooOOOOOoooOOOOORRRM 🎶
The approach of sunset was so very beautiful, so grand in its masses of splendidly-coloured clouds, that there was quite an assemblage on the walk along the cliff in the old churchyard to enjoy the beauty. Before the sun dipped below the black mass of Kettleness, standing boldly athwart the western sky, its downward way was marked by myriad clouds of every sunset-colour—flame, purple, pink, green, violet, and all the tints of gold; with here and there masses not large, but of seemingly absolute blackness, in all sorts of shapes, as well outlined as colossal silhouettes.
Don’t you love some subtle imagery about the end of a world and the beginning of another.
The only sail noticeable was a foreign schooner with all sails set, which was seemingly going westwards. The foolhardiness or ignorance of her officers was a prolific theme for comment whilst she remained in sight, and efforts were made to signal her to reduce sail in face of her danger.
People continue to try and help each other 🥺
Then without warning the tempest broke. With a rapidity which, at the time, seemed incredible, and even afterwards is impossible to realize, the whole aspect of nature at once became convulsed. The waves rose in growing fury, each overtopping its fellow, till in a very few minutes the lately glassy sea was like a roaring and devouring monster. White-crested waves beat madly on the level sands and rushed up the shelving cliffs; others broke over the piers, and with their spume swept the lanthorns of the lighthouses which rise from the end of either pier of Whitby Harbour. The wind roared like thunder, and blew with such force that it was with difficulty that even strong men kept their feet, or clung with grim clasp to the iron stanchions. […] To add to the difficulties and dangers of the time, masses of sea-fog came drifting inland—white, wet clouds, which swept by in ghostly fashion, so dank and damp and cold that it needed but little effort of imagination to think that the spirits of those lost at sea were touching their living brethren with the clammy hands of death, and many a one shuddered as the wreaths of sea-mist swept by. At times the mist cleared, and the sea for some distance could be seen in the glare of the lightning, which now came thick and fast, followed by such sudden peals of thunder that the whole sky overhead seemed trembling under the shock of the footsteps of the storm.
I love depictions of the sea as a monster… 🌊🔱
PEOPLE!!!!! CAN BE GOOD!!!!!
The wind suddenly shifted to the north-east, and the remnant of the sea-fog melted in the blast; and then, mirabile dictu, between the piers, leaping from wave to wave as it rushed at headlong speed, swept the strange schooner before the blast, with all sail set, and gained the safety of the harbour. The searchlight followed her, and a shudder ran through all who saw her, for lashed to the helm was a corpse, with drooping head, which swung horribly to and fro at each motion of the ship.
Wonderful.
But, strangest of all, the very instant the shore was touched, an immense dog sprang up on deck from below, as if shot up by the concussion, and running forward, jumped from the bow on the sand. Making straight for the steep cliff, where the churchyard hangs over the laneway to the East Pier so steeply that some of the flat tombstones—"thruff-steans" or "through-stones," as they call them in the Whitby vernacular—actually project over where the sustaining cliff has fallen away, it disappeared in the darkness, which seemed intensified just beyond the focus of the searchlight.
Wonderfuler.
The man was simply fastened by his hands, tied one over the other, to a spoke of the wheel. Between the inner hand and the wood was a crucifix, the set of beads on which it was fastened being around both wrists and wheel, and all kept fast by the binding cords. The poor fellow may have been seated at one time, but the flapping and buffeting of the sails had worked through the rudder of the wheel and dragged him to and fro, so that the cords with which he was tied had cut the flesh to the bone.
Wonderfulest.
It is needless to say that the dead steersman has been reverently removed from the place where he held his honourable watch and ward till death—a steadfastness as noble as that of the young Casabianca—and placed in the mortuary to await inquest.
NO NO NO BURN HIM CUT HIS HEAD SLAM A STAKE IN HIS HEART
Now back to the girls:
Lucy was very restless all night, and I, too, could not sleep. The storm was fearful, and as it boomed loudly among the chimney-pots, it made me shudder. When a sharp puff came it seemed to be like a distant gun. Strangely enough, Lucy did not wake; but she got up twice and dressed herself. Fortunately, each time I awoke in time and managed to undress her without waking her, and got her back to bed. It is a very strange thing, this sleep-walking, for as soon as her will is thwarted in any physical way, her intention, if there be any, disappears, and she yields herself almost exactly to the routine of her life.
Everything is A-OK!
Somehow I felt glad that Jonathan was not on the sea last night, but on land. But, oh, is he on land or sea? Where is he, and how? I am getting fearfully anxious about him. If I only knew what to do, and could do anything!
WHERE ARE YOU JONATHAN
And did the old man, in fact, die?

Creature (Both Haunted & Holy)
Vinsmoke Sanji/Reader - Chapter 12 - 4.2k
The crew realizes you have an irrational fear of whales, and Sanji tries his best to help.
ao3 | series masterlist | masterlist | next part
Reverse Mountain towers above you, taller than anything you had ever seen before. Your home island, one of the hundreds that made up the archipelago of the Selken Isles, had been mountainous, with your own childhood village being nestled on a cliff above the sea, just one of the 23 ports on your island alone. But this– this is a new level of height, and the waters are choppy underneath you. The currents almost seem uneasy, or nervous, as you stretch on the deck, wearing a swimsuit and your pelt, before diving, checking out the hull of the boat before you summit the mountain. The rest of the crew is either in the galley, waiting for you to come back, or standing on the deck, watching you from the safety of their ponchos.
Your hands and feet melt away easily, your body reshaping into your seal form, and the harsh light of day gives way to the calm of the sea. The blue void below you makes you sigh, a stream of bubbles falling from your mouth as you swim under the boat, examining the wood as a few curious fish swim around you as you do your job.
You stop, when a song echoes through the water, high-pitched and eerie. It shakes the water around you, and in the distance, you can see the shape of a gigantic sea-king, ten times the size of the Merry and letting out another loud call, this one lower, and more resonant, only audible to you, and whatever creatures are around you.
It’s oddly beautiful, as you watch the serpent twist, before disappearing into the blue void, swimming deeper and out of your sight. You finish, spending another fifteen minutes under the water before you surface, leaping from the water and landing on the deck, where Nami has a towel waiting, wrapping you up as you both make it back into the common room, dripping water all the way.
“We’re right along the calm line, straddling the border,” You towel your hair off, before dropping it to wipe up the puddles you’ve created, shaking out the water on your skin as you slip a pair of sweatpants over your swimsuit, your pelt, mysteriously dry, sliding off one of your shoulders. “Sea-Kings run rampant, I saw one when I was down there, and only the Sea Mother knows what may lay in the depths. We should try to move away from there.”
“Are they strong?” Luffy sits a bit straighter as you finish talking, eyes shining with mischief.
“We’re not going to stay to find out,” Nami smacks the back of his head, knocking his hat into his eyes. “Let’s get–”
Something rams against the ship, making everything shake. The same song from earlier fills your ears as you hit the floor, hair covering your face as you let out an angry, low grumble, clicking as Luffy whoops, making a break for the door, wanting to fight whatever rammed the Merry, Sanji and Zoro on his heels.
The rain has stopped, and you bolt after your captain, intent on stopping him from getting the ship destroyed by picking a fight with one of the goliaths below. Coming onto the deck, you find the ship hovering, oddly peaceful, except for the smell of fish and bone choking you as you look at the sky. The roar deafens you, making your ears ring as you struggle to gain a sense of which way you’re going, and the ship trembles around you, making Luffy whoop again.
You let out a growl, while Luffy looks disappointed that he can’t find a serpent to fight, whining, while you stalk forward, pushing past a confused Sanji and Zoro.
“Shut up,” You grab his collar, baring your teeth. “This is bad. Very bad.” You look out past the railing, and let out a louder groan, dropping your captain as the beast’s gigantic forehead in front of you. “We’re stuck on top of a Neptunian–”
“We’re what?!” Luffy cries, just as the boat drops, another confused roar shaking everything that you currently exist on. You smack your hands over your ears, screaming in pain. Sanji and Zoro fly past your vision as they slam into the deck, with Usopp holding onto the door of the galley. Nami, wherever she is, screams, and you hear a loud snap.
“We need to get out of here!” Nami howls, pulling you up, and staring into your dazed eyes. “We can panic later!”
You let out a roar, slamming your fists into the deck, and the ship rockets forward, the wake behind the Going Merry causing giant waves to crest up on the sides of the ship until you’ve been pushed out of the calm belt, the beasts roaring as you’ve made it out of their range. You stand up slowly, watching as they sink back into the ocean, just as you let out another, furious roar, turning to look at the crew.
“Never,” you loom over Luffy, breathing hard with teeth bared at your captain, who looks up at you in shock, “.... do that again, you idiot.”
You look at the form of the Red Line above you, holding your forehead as you slowly calm yourself, and Zoro follows your gaze, frowning at the gigantic mountain while Luffy whines about getting lectured. You only shoot him another glare.
“We can’t just fight everything,” Usopp manages to stand, wobbling as he does so, looking a bit green.
“We could have taken it,” Luffy pouts, and you fight the urge to punch him, podmate or not.
“Absolutely not!” Zoro holds him up by his armpits, looking him in the eyes like he's a misbehaving cat. Luffy only frowned, glaring at both yourself and Zoro. Sanji steps forward, taking Luffy from Zoro’s hands, and setting him on the ground, butting heads with the swordsman as he does.
“Let's focus on getting up the mountain,” Sanji looks at you, pushing Zoro’s face away from his own, playing towards the neutral ground. “We can argue later, and then I’ll kick your ass, mosshead.”
You fold your arms and eventually sigh, looking over at the galley, the door still hanging open with Usopp gripping the railing in front of it, holding up the rudder’s steering rod. Silence envelops the deck as you look at the snapped rudder, open-mouthed. He looks just as shocked as you, both staring at it as you approach him.
“I… I’ll fix that, first,” You blink, and Usopp nods, and Nami takes that as a sign to start barking orders at the rest of the crew to ready the ship for the journey up the the canal. It almost looks like a waterfall in the distance, with a mist rising at the foot of the mountain. All you know is that it’s flowing upwards, you can feel the way the water pulls and tugs for you to follow it.
Carefully, you set the broken piece back on, using sticky resin-based glue to hold it, as Usopp hammers nails and metal brackets to keep it together, even after the glue dries. By the time you’re done, you already know you’re going to need to check out the actual rudder itself whenever you find time to anchor somewhere, wiping sweat from your brow as Nami enters the common space again, watching as Usopp and yourself take stock of what building and repair supplies you may need.
“We ready to set off?”
“As we’ll ever be.”
“Mind giving us a push in the right direction?”
“Not at all,” you groan as you stretch, feeling stiff from your swimsuit drying to your skin, and the fact you had moved the boat away from the calm belt without any preparation. You’re exhausted, honestly. “Let's see what’ll happen.”
The entire crew stands on the deck, anxiously watching as you push the ship forward, left arm outstretched with the palm towards the Red Line as your right mimics the breaststroke, steadily moving the ship forward as you breathe deeply. The moment you come to the mist, you pause, unsure of what to do. The Going Merry shudders underneath you, moving forward and going up the mountain, caught in the currents of the river flowing upwards. You gasp, hands dropping to your sides as you do, running to the side to peek over the railing. Fish jump from the water alongside the boat, and you catch Luffy doing the same thing as you, grinning when he turns to look at you.
“This is— this must be magic,” you whisper, walking to the center of the deck, and holding Nami’s shoulders. “We’re going higher, and higher— we’ll be at the summit within ten minutes, at this rate!”
“It’s amazing,” Sanji is still looking at the fish, eyes sparkling. “To think— all the seas, meeting here— this proves there must be an All Blue!”
When you reach the summit, the sun is high in the sky, and Sanji watches as you look around, gasping at the clouds, and how you can see the Red Line, wrapping around to the very end of the horizon. It’s… adorable, he admits, taking a long drag as you bend down over the railing as if to get closer to the water, Usopp immediately pulling you back by your collar, screeching about you falling and never being able to find you again, to which you pout, arms folded as you were lectured.
Nami also said a few terse words, pinching one of your ears which you visibly deflated at, letting out a few protests Sanji couldn’t quite make out as you trudged after them. Nami gives in, after a few dejected steps, and you let out a loud trill, hugging her over her back.
“You’re so obvious.”
Sanji turned, choking a little at how he was startled, snubbing out his cigarette on the side of his arm. He had faced worse burns in the kitchen, anyway. Zoro leaned up against the wall, watching him evenly.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re just an idiot,” Zoro walked over, standing beside him, leaning on the railing just as Sanji was. If he noticed how he extinguished the cigarette, he didn’t mention it. “We’ve spent over a month together as a crew now and you’re still isolating yourself, stupid.”
“Please! I’ll be good! I’m sorry I was born weak!” The bars are cold against his hands, and his voice is useless in the depths of the castle, where water occasionally leaks in from the ocean, adding a dampness that chills the air. Sanji sobs, hating how the iron helmet traps the wetness of his snot and tears against his skin, how he cannot open his mouth to even attempt to bargain with his father. Isolation, an exile to the bottom of the floating kingdom. That is to be the rest of his life.
“Ah, like you’re one to talk, with how consistently you get lost.” Sanji plays off how unsettled he is by Zoro’s reading of him. Though it’s impossible that no one knows who he is, or even what Germa is, the only outlier being yourself from the North Blue, the first mate has an uncanny ability to sense things within people. But, it works. Zoro scowls at him, focused on the insult rather than the deflection, bickering ensuing.
The boat lurches forward, speeding down the mountain, and both men hear your joyful whoop as it does so, just able to make out your form beside the figurehead, pointing forward before you let out another whoop. Sanji can’t help but smile, leaning into his palm as he watches you throw your hands in the air as the ship breaks through the cloud cover.
A loud, echoing horn-like noise fills the air, and you let out a screech, tumbling away from the railing. Sanji and Zoro exchange a glance, just as the noise sounds again. You look near feral, looking back over your shoulder, into the fog, and let out a high-pitched wail. Sanji swears he’s heard the horn before, too. It’s just so familiar.
“It’s just the wind!” Nami attempts to soothe you, but her voice is lost in the wind, and you sprint towards the galley as the noise sounds a final time, a dark shape in the distance, almost like a mountain in the middle of the canal.
“ There’s a big, fuck-off whale!” You’re screaming, swinging behind Zoro and Sanji and keeping crouched low, shaking. Your eyes are wide, and even as Sanji blushes at how you’re gripping onto him, he’s aware enough to know that you are sinking your claws into his shoulders, instincts for survival seemingly winning.
“And that’s an issue…?” Zoro looks down at you, arms folded, as the giant whale comes into focus.
“Whales eat seals!”
“But you’re human-ish, right now.”
If looks could kill, Zoro would be massacred with how you glare at him, hiding behind Sanji who is very desperately trying not to think about how tightly you’re holding him, gripping his coat as if it’s a life float. You let out a loud whine, burying your face in his back as the swordsman still doesn’t seem to get it while Sanji is dying at how you’re whimpering into his back. She’s scared. She’s scared. She’s scared. Do not think this is anything else she is just scared and wait why is that whale so big—
The creature lets out a roar that makes you somehow grip Sanji tighter, climbing him like a tree as you hold onto him, arms around the top of his head and legs looped around his chest, making him wobble, much more top heavy than he’s used to as he grips your forearms, attempting to stabilize himself. Nami screams for you to get it together enough to send the ship through the gap on the left of the creature and you are shaking your head no and screaming about how it was a natural predator to seals.
Zoro just stares. You, someone who had defied your abuser’s orders directly in front of him, who had snuck away at the first chance of freedom with him, who had been brave enough to ask for help when you needed it…. were insanely afraid of whales. He can’t even comment on it before Usopp and Nami start screaming as well. Luffy’s disappeared, and just as Zoro thinks he’s about to receive a one-way ticket to hell, a cannon goes off, and the backward force manages to slow the ship enough so that it only just (still rather aggressively) taps the whale, still enough for the figurehead to get sent flying backward, nearly crushing a traumatized Nami in the process.
It’s comical, really, how quickly the crew can go from competency to chaos, as you, one of the more competent people on the boat when it came to sailing, wail about, well, the whale.
All seems calm then, though the urgency is still there, with Zoro forcibly peeling you off the cook so he can help to row away. The whale roars again, and this time it’s close enough to physically shake the ship. Your ears pound and you worry you’ve gone deaf because you can’t hear yourself scream in pain as you hold your head from the position you’re curled in on the floor. Luffy has emerged from the gun deck, screaming about the figurehead, seemingly unaffected, before reeling back, and slamming his fist into the eye of the giant whale.
And then it all goes silent, the entire crew staring up at the eye as it looks down at them. You’re shaking, because the scent is overwhelming. This is a monster from your bedtime stories. Whispered about in hushed tones from your older sister, trying her best to scare you. Telling stories of the selken folk who were gobbled up, torn apart. And you are an ant to this being, not even a tasty morsel to be gobbled up. You aren’t even considered prey, with the entire ship there. You’re nothing to this gigantic creature and you sob quietly, holding your hands over your mouth, warbling high and terrified, instincts telling you to get even smaller.
It lets out another roar, and you scream, feeling the way the water is pulled into its gaping maw as you pass out, a prayer to the Sea Mother hanging off your tongue as you plead for mercy.
Sanji gets to your side after you scream, sighing in relief when he sees your heart is still beating. Your hands are clammy, and it’s unnerving to feel how cold you are, somehow still alive. They were all still alive, though the cook isn’t too sure about Luffy at the moment, as he glances around, taking in the oddly serene interior he finds himself in. Blue skies, a few clouds, and a calm ocean, with a tiny island sitting before him. Your eyes flutter open with a warble as you look up at him, gripping your head.
“Where…?” You trail off as you push yourself up further, eyes wide as you take in your surroundings.
“Not sure,” Sanji helps you stand, keeping a hand on the small of your back. You can’t help but let out a worried warble again. The smell hurts your nose, and you find yourself struggling not to gag. “What’s wrong?”
“It smells… so bad in here.” You groan, head butting his shoulder gently, causing pink to dust his cheeks. “Can’t you smell it? It’s like the inside of the stomach?”
“No, though I suppose I’m lucky for that.” He ruffles your hair as you groan, holding a hand to your nose. “Hm… though if we did get swallowed… that would mean this is stomach acid.”
“Which means our ship will be dissolved in a few days.” Nami approaches from behind, arms crossed. “We need to find a way out.” Usopp and Zoro are on the lower deck, looking over the railings. You groan, suddenly realizing where this is going.
“I called it,” you glare at Zoro as he joins you on the upper deck. “I fucking called it and you said I was being irrational.”
“Technically, I didn’t say anything. I just looked at you.”
“You stare at people in essays, Roronoa.” Sanji deadpans.
“I don’t recall asking for your opinion, waiter.”
“I’ll never miss an opportunity to insult you.”
The boat rocks from something, and you let out a scream, watching as a squid rears over the boat. Sanji leans over you, almost on instinct, and just as Zoro readies a sword— a harpoon pierces it from behind, killing it on impact. You’re trembling underneath Sanji, who is glaring down the direction of the harpoon, an old man staring back at him. It almost feels like Sanji is growling as he stands above you.
Safe. Protected. Strong. Good choice for a mate. A part of your mind rumbles, and you bite your tongue to stop the trill that rises in your throat when Sanji looks down at you, concern etched across his face.
“I— thank you,” you manage to choke out, holding a hand to your forehead, as if that could stop your hindbrain. The cook only nods, looking back up at the old man. There is thick, terrifying anger in the air, and the old man just sits back in his lawn chair, gets out the newspaper, and reads it like it’s nothing. You let out a loud warble, sinking deeper into the deck as your anxiety grips your mind. You are in the belly of a whale, on a sea of stomach acid, with some insane old man. And you couldn’t even protect your pod.
This only seems to drive Sanji to get angrier on your behalf.
“Say something, dammit!”
The old man looks up.
“Forget it, somebody’s going to die.”
“Oh yeah? Who?”
“Me,” he jabs his thumb at himself and Zoro has to hold Sanji back before he does something. The swordsman no-so-discreetly points to you, with your head in your hands, eyes wide, with a dead-eyed stare.
“Help her,” Zoro hisses, as he steps up to talk, “Then threaten him.”
Sanji carefully helps you up, and you protest, warbling when he finally has to pick you up. You’re shaking, and he can see how your claws have pressed into your palms, cutting little divots into the skin. You’re entirely out of it.
“Hey, hey, what’s happening?” Sanji sets you down on the couch in the galley, and you shake even harder.
“I’m useless.” You mumble, curling in on yourself.
Silence overtakes the room, and he swears his heart freezes. You remind him too much of himself right now. And it hurts. You refuse to meet his eyes, fingers sinking into your hair. It looks painful, especially when you warble into your legs, muffling yourself as Sanji stands there, baffled.
“How are you useless?” He kneels, doing his best to be at your eye level. “You, not even an hour ago, saved up from a bunch of sea beasts.” You shake your head, hair falling so it covers half of your face, meeting his gaze. You look utterly devastated and broken. It makes him feel terrible.
“I couldn’t— the whale,” you hiccup, covering your mouth with one of your hands, “It scared me so badly, Sanji, It was so loud— I thought I was stuck back— back—”
Arlong’s roar fills your ears as you press your back against the wall. He’s in a fit of rage— some smaller naval ship had attacked him on the waters, and he had responded by sinking it nearly instantly. You shrink into the corner of the room, hoping to be invisible for just a moment as he passes by. Unfortunately, you’re not.
The fishman charges into the room, eyes alight with fury as he grabs you by your arm. You only mutter ‘no’ repeatedly as he drags you to the front of the ship.
“Do you see this?!” He points at the damage done by a few lucky cannon balls, “Why couldn’t you move us away in time?”
You keep muttering, shaking your head at him. The deck has gone silent as Arlong tosses you to the side. You yelp as you slide across the deck, some of the wood causing splinters to stab into your arm.
“I asked you a question!” Arlong roars. “You’re useless! All you’re good for is to make me an heir, and you can’t even do that!”
“—Hey, it’s okay—”
You shake your head. You can smell Arlong and can feel the weight of your shackles on your wrist.
“Can you tell me something you can feel right now? Or hear?”
What can you hear? You hear the voice. The same voice that had been singing when you had entered your cycle. Your breathing, yes, it’s loud and heavy, and the boat creaking around you.
“There you go, you’re doing so good for me,” the voice warps in your mind, familiar. You can feel two warm arms around you, gentle pressure holding you close. “Follow my breathing, you’re gonna be just fine.”
Your chest rises and falls in sync with the man you’re being held by, and his smell is calming. Tobacco and sugar, with a hint of cinnamon. Sanji your mind provides. Good choice. Caring. Strong.
“You with me now?” Sanji asks, and you rumble. Arlong’s scent has faded, and you realize that it was never there to begin with. Your shackles are much the same, but instead of cold iron, it’s the gentle hold Sanji had on them, stopping you from sinking your claws into your scalp, and from pulling out your hair. “Hey, you’re safe here. We– well, we got this whole thing figured out.”
Nami’s scent fills your nose, and you whine when she walks into the galley, along with an unfamiliar smell.
“Who–?”
“It’s… these insane people.” Nami looks at how you’ve curled into Sanji. It looks almost natural, the two of you like that, and it makes her smirk a little bit. This is something she can tease you about later. “But– there’s a doctor here, I’d appreciate it if you’d let yourself get properly looked at.”
And with that, she leaves, and you only flop harder into Sanji, who just rubs down your back in a soothing manner.
“I don’t think you’re useless, for the record.” Sanji finally speaks, and you look up at him as he says your name. “You’re probably one of the better sailors on the crew, you’re practically the one keeping this whole thing going.”
“I couldn’t keep my cool–” you protest, and he hushes you, squeezing your nose.
“Around something that is a natural predator to selkies,” Sanji raises an eyebrow. “I don’t know, but you acted naturally, and warned us about why you were so uneasy. That’s more than admirable.”
“I guess…”
“It is,” Sanji makes you stand, and helps you to the deck. You squint in the sunlight and shade your eyes with your hand. You’re out of the whale now, and it’s now just… sitting next to the Going Merry, which is docked beside a lighthouse. “C’mon, we’ll get on land. It’ll be okay, I promise.”
You ignore the way your hindbrain keens about the praise he had just given you, and how you are fighting the urge to present to him and do whatever he wants, so long as he praises you again. But, you still hold his hand, as he leads the way.

WASHINGTON ― President Joe Biden is hiking tariffs on electric vehicles, semiconductors and several other goods imported from China, escalating a trade war between the two world's largest economies as the U.S. accuses Chinese competitors of unfair practices in industries the U.S. is trying to grow.
The moves, which come amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China, are designed to protect American industries in clean energy that the administration has targeted with major investments to try to catch up with China.
Other goods from China slapped with higher tariffs include solar cells, batteries, battery materials, cranes used at ports, and certain medical supplies, as well as steel and aluminum imported from China.
The Biden administration has for months accused China of unfair trade practices by flooding the global markets with goods at artificially low prices, putting U.S. manufacturing of electric vehicles, microchips and other goods at a steep disadvantage.
Lael Brainard, director of the National Economic Council in the White House, said the objective of the higher tariffs is to "make sure that historic investments in jobs spurred by President Biden's actions are not undercut by a flood of unfairly underpriced exports from China."
Biden, whose administration reviewed the tariff rates over the past year, is keeping intact more than $300 billion in tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. Biden will announce the new increases during a White House speech Tuesday.
Some of the tariff hikes include:
Electric vehicles from China: from 25% to 100% beginning this year.
Semiconductors from China: from 25% to 50% by 2025.
Lithium-ion batteries from China used in electric vehicles: from 7.5% to 25% this year.
Solar cells imported from China: from 25% to 50% this year.
Steel and aluminum products: form 0%-7.5% to 25% this year.
Ship-to-shore container cranes imported from China: from zero to 25% this year
Hospital syringes and needles made in China: from zero to 50% this year.
China pushed back strongly against the higher tariffs.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called the moves "self-defeating" and against the consensus reached last November by Biden and Chinese President Jinping Xi during a summit in San Francisco.
"More importantly, it will harm the world’s green economic transition and climate action," Wenbin said. "We urge the U.S. to stop repairing and digging up the road at the same time, so to speak, and create enabling conditions for China-U.S. climate cooperation and global green transition."
Another ministry spokesman last Friday said, "China will take all necessary measures to defend its rights and interests."
The moves come as Biden is courting the support of working-class voters in Midwest battleground states including Michigan, the center of the U.S. auto industry, for the November election.
Biden is borrowing from the trade playbook of Trump, the Republican presumptive nominee, who routinely raised tariffs on Chinese goods during his four years in office.
"Where have you been for the last three and a half years? They should have done it a long time ago," Trump said Biden's tariffs, speaking outside a New York courtroom, where is attending day 17 of his hush-money trial. "But they've also got to do it on other vehicles, and they have to do it on a lot of other products. Because China's eating our lunch right now."
Biden has sought to differentiate his tariff approach with his predecessor's plan for new tariffs. Biden last month slammed Trump's campaign proposals as "across-the-board tariffs on all imports from all countries that could badly hurt American consumers." Trump has proposed a 60% or more tariff on all Chinese imports and warned the U.S. auto industry will face a "bloodbath" if he loses his election in November.
Biden has staked his economic agenda on reigniting a U.S. manufacturing boom centered on electric vehicles and clean energy.
The Biden administration says it has helped spur more than $860 billion in private investment through legislation passed during Biden's first two years in office that incentivized the manufacturing of electric vehicles, clean-energy products, microchips and other investments.
Brainard said the tariff hikes will "ensure that American businesses and workers have the opportunity to compete on a level playing field in industries that are vital to our future such as clean energy and semiconductors."
Biden called for the tripling of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from China during a campaign speech last month before the United Steelworkers union in Pittsburgh.
Each of the tariff increases reflect the recommendations of Biden's United States Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, who evaluated the rates as part of a mandatory four-year review.

The use of a covert “shadow fleet” by Moscow to transport oil in defiance of western sanctions will be a primary focus during discussions between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy in London this week. The talks are set to take place ahead of US President Joe Biden’s meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Washington.
According to The Guardian, Russia has been using older, uninsured tankers to move oil and liquefied natural gas outside the framework of western sanctions. These vessels operate without western insurance and have been involved in risky ship-to-ship oil transfers near international waters, including off the eastern coast of Sweden. This activity is part of an effort to bypass a $60-a-barrel price cap imposed by the West on Russian oil exports, a measure designed to limit Moscow’s revenues without causing a spike in global oil prices.
Despite the sanctions, a recent study by the Kyiv School of Economics revealed that Russia’s oil revenues reached $17.1 billion in July due to rising oil prices and insufficient enforcement of the price cap. The report also highlighted that while 307 tankers transported Russian crude from January 2023 to June 2024, only a small fraction of these ships have been sanctioned by the US, EU, or UK.
Efforts to disrupt this shadow fleet have been slow. In July, Starmer led an international call at the European Political Community summit in Blenheim to increase pressure on countries allowing these tankers to operate under their flags. However, the number of tankers evading sanctions has not significantly decreased.
The US and UK are expected to discuss further strategies to strengthen enforcement and pressure flag states, ports, and maritime industries to limit the fleet’s activities. One recent success saw Eswatini, a landlocked African state, dismantle its ship registry used for flagging tankers linked to this shadow fleet, following action from the International Maritime Organization.
Earlier reports indicated that Russia’s efforts to use the shadow fleet to bypass sanctions have led to a rise in illegal oil shipments. Studies showed that a significant portion of these tankers are registered in countries such as Panama, Liberia, and the Marshall Islands, with key destinations being India, China, and Turkey, reflecting a shift from traditional EU markets.

I'm not even sure which October Make Stuff thing I'm doing (possibly I'm doing like five of them, just, badly?) but I had three prompts at the top of this document while I was writing:
7KPP Promptober: Obfuscate | Inktober: Dream | Fictober: "It's not too late [...]"
Here's Calanthia, in my possibly-an-AU where she goes home after the Summit and pines for Jasper for 7 years while Fixing The World for a distraction from her pining.
–
Seven years ago, she fought for a spot as a member of the delegation; competition was ferocious for those seven spots. Particularly given only five were really up for grabs. An eligible prince and princess, after all, would hardly be allowed to remain in Revaire during a Summit year.
Eligibility as a chaperone is, thankfully, a less fraught affair, for all there is only one spot available. When the younger generation have begun jockying for the seven delegate spots, she makes it known that she wishes to go. The queen nods to her and says, with the ghost of a smile turning up the corners of her mouth,
“That can, I think, be arranged.”
There might be other candidates; if there are, they never truly contend with her for the position. After seven years being spoken of as Katyia’s successor, she has many friends, more allies, and all manor of favors she could call in. She hears a whisper that she has requested the place, and no other whispers materialize to counter it.
Most people seem pleased at the prospect, even if as a chaperone she will be tasked more with watching over the delegates rather than truly taking part. The consensus seems to be that her mere presence will encourage this Summit in a similar direction to her own. All but the most strident war hawks optimistically look forward to increased trade and stronger diplomatic ties, a rising tide that raises all ships.
Revaire’s position is worlds away from what it was when she attended her Summit; the disposition of her people, too, is wholly different.
She looks over the children, amazed at how young they all seem. It is not only in years; they seem less weighed-down, less weary, less wary than her own cohort. They’re largely respectful of her, but not intimidated.
When she was in their shoes, she was at least a little afraid of almost everyone with power. But then, the Revaire that saw her to adulthood was a very different place. In her homeland, caution was a prerequisite to continued existence. Care is still wise, but carelessness is no longer liable to get one killed.
Some of Revaire’s young delegates, in fact, could do with a little cowing; one boy, who does not have half Zarad’s charm with it, tries to flirt with her when the ship is scarcely out of port. She gives him her most unamused look, borne of being the second-eldest daughter of a large family, further honed by years of making a career of diplomacy and overseeing a sea of nieces and nephews.
He looks less abashed than he ought. Well; at least he has the nerve to try to brazen it out. Courage won’t be enough on its own, and alone it’s no advantage at all, but it’s not a terrible beginning.
“You will,” she informs him, “need significantly more charm to be able to carry off that level of shamelessness with any degree of success.”
The other younglings have all gone still in a way that suggests listening for possible advantage, so she projects well enough to be heard rather than keeping her rebuke quiet and continues,
“Corvali would largely condemn you on the grounds of gracelessness, the Arlish and Wellish on lack of discretion and manners, Jiyelians on the breech of well-known and generally accepted social mores. The Hiseans often appreciate a little playful effrontery, but no one else is likely to be amused.”
“What about Skalt?” one girl asks, with a grin and a glint in her eye that says she, for one, would very much appreciate tips on how to flirt with a lady who could heft her over one shoulder.
“Don’t flirt with anyone from Skalt unless you mean it and you don’t mind being up to your elbows in snow for three months. The ladies are not inclined to marry out and they seldom send male delegates.”
She considers the group and then addresses the girl and the other young ladies.
“Do consider making friends, though; they’re generally very happy to teach other young ladies how to use knives.”
Several more look intrigued at that. The original young man looks nervous, now.
“They are not permitted weapons on the Isle any more than the rest of us are, but in my own year a Wellish Lord did have to be rescued from stabbing by fork after causing offense. Best avoid being in his shoes, mm?”
–
It’s a short voyage - only two days. Enough time for introductions amongst themselves, but not enough for anyone to really begin forming cliques that might hamper the Summit’s overall aims.
A few of the children - and they are children - apply to her for bits of advice. Some of them want advice on deportment or conduct, and here she can only tell them what she told herself during her own year;
Be yourself, but be the best possible version. Be polite. Look for things to like in the people around you, because the point of this is to make connections. Express gratitude. Extend grace. Know your goals, and bear them in mind.
They do not ask what her goals were. All the world believes it knows; believes that she went to make a name for herself, the way ladies of middling birth are seldom permitted to do.
And they are not wholly wrong; she did want that, as far as it goes.
But she’d intended to do it in part with a marriage. A duke or a prince seemed achievable, if she could reach the Summit itself. Among the best of all seven nations, she felt confident she could find a partner to help her change the world for the better, or at least a friend to stand beside her and lend weight to her voice.
She tried to keep that goal in mind.
But she found a different dream, on the isle.
Everyone knows, now, that she, like Katyia, did not marry.
They generally assume this is because she, like Katyia, did not lose her heart.
It is the easiest lie she has ever told, because she never had to say a word.

Isle of Man: A Historical Odyssey from Celts to Vikings
The Isle of Man, a small island situated in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, is renowned for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. With its unique blend of Celtic, Viking, and Norse heritage, the island offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, alongside a plethora of attractions for modern explorers. From ancient monuments to picturesque coastal paths, the Isle of Man is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.
Historical Significance
The history of the Isle of Man is a tapestry woven from the influences of various civilizations over thousands of years. Evidence of human habitation dates back to the Mesolithic period, around 8,000 years ago, with Neolithic and Bronze Age sites scattered across the island, such as the Meayll Hill Stone Circle and the Balladoole Viking Burial.
During the Iron Age, the Celts established their presence on the island, leaving behind a legacy of hill forts and roundhouses. The Celtic influence is still evident today in the island's language, Manx Gaelic, which has seen a revival in recent years.
The arrival of the Vikings in the 9th century marked a significant chapter in the island's history. The Isle of Man became a vital part of the Norse kingdom of Mann and the Isles, with Viking rulers exerting control over the island for several centuries. This period left an indelible mark on the island's culture and heritage, with remnants such as the Viking ship burial at Balladoole and the ancient Tynwald Hill, where the island's parliament, Tynwald, has met for over a thousand years, making it the oldest continuous parliamentary body in the world.
The medieval era saw the construction of impressive castles, such as Castle Rushen in Castletown and Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle. These fortifications played crucial roles in the island's defense and governance. The island eventually came under the control of the Scottish and then the English crowns, yet it maintained a significant degree of autonomy, which continues today as a self-governing British Crown Dependency.

Navigation and Observation Tower in the Port of Yokohama
Location: Honmoku Pier, Naka Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 15:52 on Sept. 6, 2023
The Yokohama Port Symbol Tower is a lesser-known landmark in Yokohama, built primarily for ship navigation, while also offering a green space for the public, complete with a viewing deck and gardens.
Constructed in July 1986, the tower stands at a height of 58.5 meters (191.92 ft) and is situated on Jetty D of Honmoku Pier. It serves as a ship traffic signal station, ensuring the safe navigation of passenger and cargo vessels from around the world as they enter and exit the Port of Yokohama.
The tower features an observation deck near its summit, providing panoramic views of the port. Visitors should take note that this tower serves a more utilitarian purpose than being a typical tourist attraction, as it lacks an elevator. To reach the observation deck, you need to ascend 16 short flights of stairs, totaling 140 steps up to the 4th floor.
For convenient navigation and additional information, you can refer to the Pix4Japan blog post, which includes Google Maps links to the tower, parking facilities, and the nearest bus stop. A cool Atlantic breeze blew across the dusty port in Praia, Cape Verde’s capital, as Mr. Blinken noted that the facility there had been expanded and modernized with nearly $55 million in U.S. aid[...] That project was completed more than a decade ago, but more U.S. development funds were on the way, he said.[...]
After Cape Verde, Mr. Blinken will travel to Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Angola. U.S. officials said he would address a range of issues on his stops, including conflict prevention and political stability after military coups in several countries in recent years.[...]
Mr. Blinken is making his fourth visit to sub-Saharan Africa as secretary of state. A parade of other top administration officials have also visited the continent over the past year, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III and the first lady, Jill Biden. But President Biden has yet to follow through on a pledge he made in 2022 to visit the continent, raising doubts about the depth of his commitment — even though Mr. Biden said at a U.S.-Africa leaders summit in Washington in December 2022 that America was “all in” on Africa’s future.[...]
Frustrated by several downbeat questions about security threats and Chinese influence, [Molly Phee, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs,] added, “You guys are bumming me out because you’re not talking about any of the really fun and positive, forward-looking things we’ll be doing.”[...]
One reason [for US interest in Angola] is that the United States is investing $250 million in a rail corridor that would allow the transport of minerals from landlocked areas of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to Lobito, Angola’s Atlantic port, from which they can be shipped to Europe and the United States. During Mr. Lourenço’s visit, Mr. Biden called the project “the biggest U.S. rail investment in Africa ever.” The corridor helps the United States keep pace with China, which has invested tens of billions of dollars in Angola.
China’s reach extends as far as Cape Verde, where Mr. Blinken’s motorcade drove to a government palace past signage in Chinese reflecting that the compound had been constructed by Beijing.
Oge Onubogu, the director of the Africa program at the Wilson Center in Washington, said that on recent trips to the continent she found confusion about the U.S. agenda there. Africans, she said, clearly understood Russia’s “at times sneaky” security interests, which often take the form of mercenary military partnerships with governments. And China’s economic development projects, she said, created “visible infrastructure that people can actually see and feel.” “But they’re not very clear on what the U.S. is doing,” she said. Biden officials have sought to promote African democracy and condemned military coups in places like Niger and Gabon, she said, while working with authoritarian rulers in other places. “The U.S. talks about democracy strengthening,” Ms. Onubogu added. “But at the same time, we maintain relationships with individuals Africans see as not being democratic leaders. So I think we have a struggle with messaging.” Despite public alarms raised by security analysts, Biden officials bristle at persistent questions about how the United States is countering China’s enormous investments in a continent that increasingly supplies it with oil, minerals and other natural resources. Mr. Blinken will be arriving in Ivory Coast days after a visit by China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi. “It’s you guys [sic], frankly, who frame this as a U.S.-China soccer match,” Ms. Phee told reporters last week. She added: “If China didn’t exist, we would be fully engaged in Africa [sic]. Africa is important for its own sake, and it’s important for American interests.”
