FLORIDA is allowing a racist, homophobic, climate change denying, rightwing political group to “teach” whitewashed history to children.

PragerU’s cartoon videos for children downplay our country’s history of slavery, racism, colonialism and police brutality. Other states are following.

The Florida Board of Education recently approved the classroom use of materials from PragerU, an unaccredited right-wing advocacy group. The organization's "edutainment" materials can be used as "supplemental curriculum" in Florida classrooms because it aligns with the state's revised civics and government standards for the upcoming school year.

PragerU CEO Marissa Streit confirmed that the nonprofit organization had been approved as a vendor and that its educational entertainment content could be incorporated into the curriculum by teachers without fear of being fired.

“We have seen that our schools have been hijacked by the left. They have been politicized, they have been used by union bosses, they have been doing everything under the sun not for our children,” Streit said when announcing the vendor status. "And so we have launched PragerU Kids and we started providing great 'edutainment,' educational entertainment for children across America."

PragerU has drawn criticism from economy, history and culture experts on some of the topics, who argue they misrepresent history and contain inaccuracies.

Los Angeles: Mateo Backs the Blue

In PragerU Kids' 2023 video "Los Angeles: Mateo Backs the Blue," viewers follow Mateo, an animated 13-year old student and son of Mexican immigrants to Los Angeles, as he attempts to understand the issues surrounding U.S. police and Black Lives Matter protestors.

According to PragerU, the video will "teach middle and high school kids how the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and anti-police sentiment affected crime, families, and small businesses in American cities," through Mateo's journey to "learn from a local law enforcement officer what he can do to help and make a difference in his community," because he is worried for his family's safety.

Throughout the video, the opinions of Mateo and his school's Resource Officer, Officer Suarez, are often framed as historical or statistical fact while also containing broad generalizations. In the video, Mateo compares Los Angeles' protestors to Mexican cartel members over what he perceives to be a safety threat to his family.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff fed up with a spate of false school shooting threats is taking a new tactic to try get through to students and their parents: he's posting the mugshot of any offender on social media.

Law enforcement officials in Florida and across the country have seen a wave of school shooting hoaxes recently, including in the wake of the deadly attack at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, that killed two students and two teachers.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood on Florida's Atlantic Coast said he's tired of the hoaxes targeting students, disrupting schools and sapping law enforcement resources. In social media posts Monday, Chitwood warned parents that if their kids are arrested for making these threats, he'll make sure the public knows.

“Since parents, you don’t want to raise your kids, I’m going to start raising them," Chitwood said. "Every time we make an arrest, your kid’s photo is going to be put out there. And if I can do it, I’m going to perp walk your kid so that everybody can see what your kid’s up to.”

Chitwood made the announcement in a video highlighting the arrest of an 11-year-boy who was taken into custody for allegedly threatening to carry out a school shooting at Creekside or Silver Sands Middle School in Volusia County. Chitwood posted the boy's full name and mugshot to his Facebook page.

In the video, which had more than 270,000 views on Facebook as of Monday afternoon, the camera pans across a conference table covered in airsoft guns, pistols, fake ammunition, knives and swords that law enforcement officers claim the boy was “showing off" to other students.

Later, the video cuts to officers letting the boy out of a squad car and leading him handcuffed into a secure facility, dressed in a blue flannel button-down shirt, black sweatpants and slip-on sandals. The boy's face is fully visible at multiples points in the video.

“Right this way, young man,” an officer tells the boy, his hands shackled behind his back.

The boy is led into an empty cell, with metal cuffs around his wrists and ankles, before an officer closes the door and locks him inside.

“Do you have any questions?” the officer asks as he bolts the door.

“No sir,” the boy replies.

The video prompted a stream of reactions on social media, with many residents praising Chitwood, calling on him to publicly identify the parents as well — or press charges against them.

Others questioned the sheriff’s decision, saying the 11-year-old is just a child, and that the weight of the responsibility should fall on his parents.

Under Florida law, juvenile court records are generally exempt from public release — but not if the child is charged with a felony, as in this case.

Law enforcement officials across Florida have been tracking a stream of threats in the weeks since the 2024-2025 school year began. In Broward County, home to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, officials said last week they had already arrested nine students, ages 11 to 15, for making threats since August.

"For my parents, to the kids who are getting ready for school, I'm going to say this again," Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said at a press conference, “nothing about this is a laughing or joking matter.”

“Parents, students, it's not a game,” he added.

NYC Faces Surge in COVID-19 Cases Amid Largest Summer Wave Yet - Published Aug 14, 2024

New York City, like much of the United States, is grappling with a significant summer surge in COVID-19 cases, driven by the latest variant of the virus. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that the city is experiencing one of its largest seasonal increases since the pandemic began, with “very high” levels of viral activity detected in wastewater across the five boroughs.

Rising COVID-19 Levels in NYC As of August 9, 2024, New York City joins 27 states across the country that are reporting “very high” levels of COVID-19 viral activity in wastewater, according to the CDC’s updated surveillance data. Another 17 states report “high” levels, signaling a widespread uptick in cases nationwide. Wastewater surveillance has become a critical tool for monitoring the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, offering a glimpse into potential spikes in transmission before they are reflected in clinical data.

The surge in New York City, which began to escalate in early June, has shown no signs of slowing down. Data reveals a steady increase in viral activity across all five counties: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. This has raised concerns among public health officials, especially as the city braces for what could be the most substantial summer wave of COVID-19 to date.

A Nationwide Summer Wave Nationally, the “very high” viral activity level reported by the CDC is the highest classification used by the agency to gauge the severity of COVID-19 spread. States like California, Texas, Florida, and Virginia are among those experiencing the most intense increases, with regions like the South and the West seeing particularly sharp spikes. Even states with lower overall viral levels, classified as “moderate,” are on alert as the trend of rising cases continues.

Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and former White House COVID-19 response coordinator, recently commented on the situation, noting that this current surge could become the largest summer wave the country has seen. While it may not reach the peaks of previous winter waves, the rapid increase in cases is concerning and could potentially strain healthcare resources in the coming weeks.

Impact on Hospitalizations and Testing The surge in COVID-19 cases is not only reflected in wastewater data but also in clinical indicators. The CDC has reported a 13-week increase in positive COVID-19 tests, with the current positivity rate exceeding 17%, up from just 0.3% in early May. This rise in cases has also led to an increase in hospitalizations, which have tripled since the lowest point of the 2023-24 COVID season. As of July 20, the hospitalization rate stood at 3.3%, compared to 1.1% on April 20.

Regions such as Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana are reporting some of the highest rates of positive COVID-19 tests, with positivity rates reaching as high as 24% for the week ending August 3. These figures are a stark reminder that, despite the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency declared by the World Health Organization, the virus remains a significant threat.

Preparing for the Fall In response to the ongoing surge, the CDC has reiterated the importance of vaccination as the primary defense against COVID-19. The agency recommends that everyone aged six months and older receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine when they become available this fall. The FDA has advised pharmaceutical companies to develop vaccines targeting the KP.2 strain, also known as the FLiRT variant, which is currently responsible for about 6% of COVID-19 cases nationwide.

Dr. Manisha Patel, chief medical officer for the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, emphasized the importance of maintaining population immunity through vaccination. “Population immunity has moved us out of the pandemic,” Dr. Patel stated. “Now the goal is to ensure that immunity is sustained because it wanes over time. Vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to keep our communities healthy.”

FLiRT Variant Symptoms and Prevention The FLiRT variant, although not as severe as some previous strains, has distinct symptoms that include sore throat, cough, fatigue, congestion, and a runny nose. Some individuals may also experience fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, and a loss of taste or smell. In more severe cases, gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea may occur.

To prevent the spread of the FLiRT variant and other COVID-19 strains, health officials continue to advise the public to avoid crowded indoor spaces, wear masks in high-risk environments, and practice good hygiene. Staying up to date with vaccinations and boosters remains the most effective measure to protect against severe illness.

Oh for fucksake, Time. It's not just wrestling with an awkwardness.

Marlon Williams-Clark, a teacher in the Tallahassee, Florida, area, does not bring up Jan. 6 anymore in his classes after a parent complained about him in 2021 because he sent students a link to information about what an insurrection is. He ended up in the school’s human resources office, he says, and had to send an apology letter to families. He has no plans to try to bring it up again due to “pressure that is coming from the state.”

They're trying to disappear history. The same way they do with anything they consider "woke". In a generation the events of January 6th may not be taught in school at all.

And it's not just Florida. It's happening even in deep blue states that have pockets of red voters.

I think a lot of people forget that in the South what is legal is not always what is enforced. I was just reading this horrible case from around a decade ago where two black men in MI were tortured, one of them non-fatally shot, and then framed for drug and gun possession by local racist cops. Thankfully the cops were charged and jailed for it, but there's still multiple people, mostly black people, they arrested in the past that seemingly did not get their convictions reexamined in light of these openly racist cops being caught planting evidence. The sheriff at the time was not fired either. Cops can arrest you for things that are not illegal, and once you're under arrest they can do whatever the fuck they want to you, and sure they might get in trouble for it later, but it can still happen, the harm is still done, and often more harm is done than can ever be repaired.

That's why, to a certain extent, anti-trans laws haven't actually changed too much for me, because in my part of Florida, functionally I could already have a doctor refuse to treat me or a cop arrest me for looking weird. In public school in particular, schools can absolutely enforce illegal policies with respect to gender, and discriminate against students. They don't get in trouble for it until a student can take it to court, and by the time they win the damage has been done. These laws all came into effect my senior year, and I already couldn't change my name or gender in the school system, had friends be outed by teachers to their homophobic parents, couldn't use the bathrooms or locker rooms, had teachers refuse to use a different name, had teachers that were known to target LGBT students, had an administrator call a friend a tranny and not get fired for it, got called slurs by other students directly in front of the 'school resource officer'...

It's still bad that there's now not even the theoretical ability to go to court, but my friends and I couldn't do it before anyway, you know? The scary prospect is losing the ability to ever go stealth due to gender change bans and losing access to hormones, but being openly transgender in the job market was never really a viable prospect either. Best we could hope for before was the closet, and all they can do is try to take even that away from us.

Witness:yes because the hallways were very empty I saw maybe……20 people? on my way to class rather then the usual amount where I’m almost trampled. but why would the school resource officer send you footage from his body-cam?

Soldier: he deemed it appropriate and necessary. Now what symptoms did the sick people you see have?

Witness: maybe bloodshot eyes……someone had something that looked like a bulging vain slithering under his skin…….several people were drooling everywhere and coughing while drinking everything they could find but why is that important?

Soldier:because we don’t know what we’re fighting some are easily brought down with shots to the chest others need to be completely burned and destroyed now you and the others are getting evacuated to New York and Florida if we can’t clear up the caves in Branson now all that we need you to do is stay calm and cooperate with our investigation.

Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For more than 40 years, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians, teachers, booksellers, publishers, writers, journalists, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. In a time of intense political polarization, library staff in every state are facing an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books. ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom ALA documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The unparalleled number of reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the 729 book challenges reported in 2021. Of the record 2,571 unique titles targeted for censorship, most were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color. The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is "Let Freedom Read." When we ban books, we're closing off readers to people, places, and perspectives. Enter our new antagonist: Hazel Agon

As the Director of the MAA (Metahuman Affairs Agency) Dr. Hazel Agon had many responsibilities; she oversaw the SSP, she had to be well briefed on the supervillains running amok in her city, and she was intimately involved with the R&D department (she used to head the department before taking over the Agency, and  she still stopped by at the end of stressful days in order to blow off steam). In short, she was a very busy and very powerful woman with a very low tolerance for unrulies who added undue amounts of pressure to her job.  

Unrulies like the fugitive Knightcaster — real name: Virgil Sanders, age: 26 — who had robbed the government of millions of dollars' worth of assets, and the vigilante Sandman — real name: unknown, age: unknown — who was a public menace.  

Sandman would be easy. As far as anyone at the Agency could tell, she worked alone and had limited access to resources that even low-ranking supervillains possessed. After months of her continued interference, and despite how careful her movements were, MAA agents were close to tracking down her real identity.  

Knightcaster on the other hand… 

Knightcaster had all but dropped off the face of the earth. He hadn’t gone home to his fathers’ house in Gainesville Florida — she had Thomas and Nico Flores-Sanders under constant surveillance — and no one had managed to find any credible sighting of him anywhere else either. It was like he’d just dropped off the face of the earth! 

And even more annoying, there hadn’t been any sign of his son, Patton Sanders. Knightcaster was spoiled goods, and if he were to be recovered, he likely would not be good for anything other than enacting the Martyr Protocol, but Patton was young, and had quite a bit of meta-potential — Agent Sophia DuPont had reported some promising results to preliminary meta-testing. If he were to be recovered soon, he might be easily transplanted into a more structured and constructive household without too much fuss.  

Perhaps Hazel would even take in the small child herself, after all, she’d always had a soft spot for children. It really was too bad most of them didn’t make it out of R&D fully intact.  

“Director Agon!” Agent Smolet burst suddenly into Hazel’s office, snapping the Director out of her thoughts.  

Hazel sent him her most withering stare, instantly cowing him.  

“My apologies, ma’am,” he said, bowing his head respectfully as he held out a manila folder for her to take. “But we’ve found Sandman.” 

“Really?” Hazel purred, snatching the folder from him and pursuing it quickly.  

“Remelda Casper, seventeen-year-old junior at Madison High School,” Agent Smolet recited redundantly as Director Agon read the exact same thing in the file. “Her parents are Robert Casper and Julieta Sanchez, divorced. Neither have ever shown up on our radar being meta-potential, nor had Ms. Sanchez’s current husband, Michael Tucker.” 

“Robert and Michael?” Hazel mused, mostly to herself. “What will her third husband’s name be? John?” 

“Fourth, ma’am,” Smolet interrupted. He flinched slightly when Hazel turned her gaze on him but continued in a small voice. “Mr. Casper was her second husband, and Mr. Tucker is her third… so John would be her-her fourth…” 

By the time Smolet finally petered off, he was shaking like a leaf. Internally, Hazel smirked at the blatant fear; externally, however, she remained coldly neutral.  

“Have Harper send a recruiter to Madison High School,” Director Agon ordered, causing Smolet to snap to attention. “If she’s willing to come above board and register with us, then I see no reason why we can’t welcome Miss Casper into the fold. And if she isn’t… Well, it’s about time we remind the public about the dangers of vigilantism, don’t you think, Smolet?” 

“Yes ma’am,” Smolet agreed before scuttling out of her office as quickly as he could.  

As soon as he was gone, Hazel picked up her phone and called her secretary.  

“Yes ma’am?” Rodgers answered. Hazel could see him straighten up through the one-way mirror that made up the far wall of her office.  

“Have someone administer Kipper-Wang meta-potential tests to Julieta Sanchez and Robert Casper as soon as possible,” she ordered. “And make sure it’s inconspicuous, we don’t need the general public feeling uneasy about Big Brother.” 

“Yes ma’am.” 

Hazel hung up without another word and watched as Rodgers shifted his attention to his computer monitor before turning her own attention to Remelda's file.  

Remelda was a smart girl — straight A’s, perfect attendance, member of her school’s chemistry club. She would make a very valuable asset to the Agency if she registered — not quite as valuable as Patton Sanders in terms of loyalty and potential, but equal at least to Knightcaster, and much more valuable than Atlas, reckless hothead that he was. 

In a way, it was almost a relief for Knightcaster to have put him down. The experimental serum that had given Atlas his powers in the first place was proving to be growing more and more unstable over time, and it was only a matter of time before the combination of his already aggressive and volatile personality, and the degenerating effects of the serum turned him into an uncontrollable weapon of pure destruction. This, of course, would have meant an awful lot of paperwork and late nights for Hazel, and potentially a huge blow to the Agency if his rampage had been public. 

But Remelda’s powers, as far as Hazel knew, were genetic, and therefore infinitely more stable than any lab-grown powers the R&D department had ever produced. 

Yes, Remelda would be quite an asset if she registered, and quite a headache if she didn’t.

I’m surprised I was able to get this out in January considering my brain decided to take the first half of the month off, but here it is, the start of section 3

My current outline has section 3 being 10 chapters long, but considering it was 9 a few days ago and then I added a chapter between this one and what was supposed to be the next one, I’m guessing it’ll be about 12-15 chapters when all is said and done (we’ve got a lot of cover in this section and I’m really excited about it)

This chapter btw takes place around 5 months after the last one, so Remy’s built a name for herself as a hero, but she’s still on that same school year.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WKRC) - A teen was arrested and charged after allegedly making hundreds of bomb threats and swatting calls across the nation.

According to CNN, citing the Seminole County State Attorney's Office, 17-year-old Alan Filion was arrested and extradited to Florida on January 30 in connection with a swatting incident directed at a mosque. Per the network, Filion allegedly placed a phone call in May of 2023 and threatened a mass shooting at the Masjid Al Hayy Mosque in Sanford, Florida.

Filion claimed to have both a handgun and explosives, CNN reported, citing a news release from the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. Per CNN, the caller can be heard saying he is going to "commit a mass shooting in the name of Satan." The sound of gunshots can also be heard, per CNN.

Filion's alleged call resulted in approximately 30 police officers responding to the Masjid Al Hayy Mosque, per CNN. Filion also allegedly targeted FBI agents, FBI offices, historically Black colleges, mosques, high schools, and also made bomb threats to military bases and the Pentagon, according to the network.

Law enforcement worked alongside the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) and were eventually able to trace the mosque 911 call to Filion's home in Lancaster, California, according to CNN, which reported that Filion created multiple accounts on websites that offered swatting services and "various IP addresses connected to these accounts" led authorities to the suspect's address.

Authorities executed a search warrant at the address in July of 2023 and Filion was arrested on January 18, per CNN. The teen was tried as an adult and faces the following charges:

Three felony charges of false reporting

One felony charge of unlawful use of a two-way communicating device

The charges also accuse Filion of committing the acts while facilitating or further an act of terrorism and while showing prejudice, according to CNN. Per the network, Filion remains in custody. An attorney representing the teen refused to comment to CNN's reporters.

“Swatting is a perilous and senseless crime, which puts innocent lives in dangerous situations and drains valuable resources. The substantial law enforcement response in this swatting case underscores our unwavering dedication to community safety and holding offenders accountable, regardless of where they are located,” Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said, per CNN. “Make no mistake, we will continue to work tirelessly in collaboration with our policing partners and the judiciary to apprehend swatting perpetrators.”

A former school security officer was found not guilty Thursday over a failure to confront the gunman who massacred 17 people at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. Scot Peterson, who was a Broward County sheriff's deputy and worked as a resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, was charged in 2019 with seven counts of neglect of a child and three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury. He broke down in tears as the unanimous decision was read Thursday. The charges carried a maximum potential sentence of 96½ years in state prison, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office said. Seventeen students, teachers and staff were killed in the shooting Feb. 14, 2018, and another 17 were injured. Peterson, 60, was the only other person at the school with a gun when the shooter opened fire. He was forced to retire following the school shooting.

Who are today's Migrants?

Introduction:

My name is Janae Vincent and in this fieldwork, we are getting perspectives of migrants. I've decided to interview my mentor and former teacher, Charissa Pretto-Huie. I have received full consent to conduct this interview.

Interview information:

Childhood Life

Charissa was born in San Fransisco to Rogelio Pretto and Judy Von Tress when they were 19 years old. Charissa's father is from Colon, Panama. Her mother is from Her parents temporarily stayed in the United States after she was born for about a year or two until her father's father passed away and left his business to his son to run it in Panama. She was raised in Colon, Panama. Seeing that the United States had territory in Panama, she attended American schools there. Charissa there learned how to speak English. She had to have a divide between her American school life and her Panamanian home life. Charissa described the Panamanian life as beautiful at times but she knew that she couldn’t stay there forever because there wasn’t much resources to further your education after high school in Panama. Charissa knew that this was not somewhere she could stay long.

Push and Pull Factors: Leaving Panama

Charissa had to make the decision to leave Panama after high school was over. There were no colleges in Panama. She knew people who left Panama but then came back but she said that if she were to come back to Panama with a degree, she wouldn’t be able to obtain an efficient job. She had always had the dream of attending college. She did not want to live in the same place that she grew up in so she also dreamed of living in the US. When she graduated, her graduating class was approximately 50 students. After high school, she went to a community college in Panama. She then went to the University of South Florida and entered there as a sophomore. Charissa there met her future husband. Charissa's mother was forced to move to the states as that is where her job in Panama was moving to. So, seeing that Charissa wanted a much better future than she knew what she could be given to her in Panama, she knew she had no choice but to move back to the U.S.

Bridges and Barriers:

Since Charissa was technically a U.S. citizen, she didn’t have to encounter the same conflicts as other immigrants with obtaining a visa and more. She also deems herself “privileged” in away because she luckily knew the American culture and language because of the American schools that she went to in Panama.

Charissa's Words:

"I came to America like any other immigrant. The only reason is because of opportunity. Like for example, imagine if you were living in Baltimore, you went to high school in Baltimore, but there were no universities, there were no community colleges, there was nothing for you to pursue a life after your high school years. That's how living in a country, let alone Panama, anywhere, any kind of immigrant sees it. Like I could have gone to the University of Panama City but that would have gotten me a job in Panama and it's not a great education. I knew that it wouldn't be a great education and I knew that it wouldn't get me a great job so I knew that I had to get out. So the bottom line is that an immigrant's attitude of why they come to America, it might sound cliche but it is for the opportunity. You know you have the opportunity to do anything you want here in the United States."

Charissa's Impact:

When I began my senior year of high school, I was completely lost and had no clue where I wanted to go with my life. That was until I walked into the office of Charissa Pretto-Huie and my whole perspective was changed. I used to not have the intention to go to college because I thought school was not for me. But, I was looked into and guided by this woman by who I was first intimidated. As time passed, I began learning more about Charissa and was introduced to her culture. She would tell me and my peers about her experiences and bring foods of her culture for our class. Charissa would give consistent words of advice to me especially when I was going through my darkest times. I can tell at times that there are still certain aspects of our culture that Charissa doesn’t understand. But, being around her has forced me to learn a new culture and the languages of that culture which is something I have always wanted. Charissa wanted to give students the opportunity at an amazing head start in life which was something that she didn’t see in Panama. That’s what she gave to me and my peers and I wouldn’t change that experience for the world.
