Those in italics have five or more pieces of usable visual, written, or audio propaganda already. If you have any visuals like photos or videos, or if you have something to say in words, submit it to this blog before round one begins on June 25th!
If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.
#long post#miss billboard tourney#i wasn't originally going to list them all but i decided to do so because there are so many without propaganda

Originally, The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton were given dialogue in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978). However, since Frampton had a British accent and The Bee Gees were Australian, their accents were not in line with a movie taking place in middle America, it was decided that they would do away with all dialogue, and use George Burns' role as narrator to supply the dialogue for all the characters.
Frampton wanted to get on the trampoline during "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." It wasn't allowed because he wasn't insured.
During the filming of Strawberry Fields' funeral, Frampton forced himself to cry by thinking of the then-recent Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash that claimed the lives of several friends and associates.
The shooting script called for Frampton's character to kill Steven Tyler's. When it came time to film this scene, Aerosmith threatened to walk out. "There's no f*cking way that Steven is gonna get directly offed by Frampton," commented Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. "It's gotta be an accident, the way it was in the original script we f*cking agreed to." They finally agreed to a compromise, with Sandy Farina's character Strawberry Fields accidentally pushing Tyler's character to his death. (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Peter Frampton!

An Album That Helped Me: April Fools
Basically since 2019-2020, when anyone asked me my favorite band, I'd say The Scary Jokes. Sure, they're not as mainstream as some of my other favs like My Chemical Romance or The Beatles, but oh well. And if someone asked my fav album (either from TSJ or in general) I'd say this one; April Fools. The balance of happy sounding vocals and instrumentals with deeper messages like drug use, heartbreak, liminality, and erm... icicles, drew me in the first time I heard it. But even not talking about the vocals or messages, the songs are just catchy. I commonly find myself going back to this album, whether the OG from 2019 or the 2021 remaster. When the remaster came out, I spent the whole day listening to it and marveling over how beautiful it sounded, how crisp it was. I tend to binge the 2019 version, sit in silence for a few minutes, and then binge the remaster just to experience that joy and awe I felt the first time I ever heard it. I've even showed this album to my aunties, mum, and friends. It really is my favorite album, and my favorite songs are Catabolic Seed, Pink Smoke, A Mannequin Adrift, and Toynbee Tiles. But, unfortunately, the story of my affection for this album takes a turn for the melancholy here. I always thought my life wasn't harsh enough for me to have a comfort album. Sure, I had songs that calmed me down, like Sandy Farina's version of Strawberry Fields Forever, but never a whole album that I could use to cope. Until now. My Nani passed away today. My first instinct is to say I wasn't that close to her, so I can push away that sadness and move on, but I can't do that. I literally started learning Spanish to make her proud, since she was Panamanian. I kinda don't wanna keep learning Spanish, since it reminds me of her. But, I can't stop now. Just a few days ago, my parents went to visit her in the hospital, and even though my brother and I were left in my grandparent's house, Nani told my parents to tell me that she was so proud of me for continuing to learn Spanish. I always hoped I could have a conversation with her in Spanish one day, but now I can't. Sure, I can talk with my godfather/her husband, but it just isn't the same. He's proud of me too, but it feels different, you know? I can only end this post off with a lyric from the album; "My world has turned so cold, but I won't cry... because icicles don't soften when they die, so why should I? Why should I...?"

Sandy Saturday's #4:
Fairport Convention's Suzanne
There was nothing wrong with Fairport Convention in the Spring of 1968. They had the best lead guitar player in England, plus two skillful singers, an oddball but talented bass player and a rock steady rhythm guitarist and drummer. They weren't The Beatles or The Stones, but they knew what they were doing and they did it well.
Only two ingredients were missing: songwriting chops and a lead singer who could truly front the band.
The first problem was a significant one; Richard Thompson, who would soon become transcendent in the songwriting department, was still about 14 years old (okay, he was actually 18, but you get the idea) and he leaned on random roommates to write his lyrics. And no one else in the band showed any real songwriting promise.
But in 1968 you did not need to write your own songs. You just followed Judy Collins lead and let Dylan write your songs for you, along with Richard Farina and a very precocious Leonard Cohen. Witness the band's version of Suzanne:
youtube
There's plenty to be said for this version: the band's female vocalist, Judy Dyble, sits it out and lets the strident and angelic Ian Matthews carry the lyric (Dyble would bring her knitting on stage at this point and darn away whenever she wasn't needed). And Richard Thompson's brooding, harsh solos, whenever the choked off electric rhythm gives him room, are something to behold. You want to take him with you, and you want to take him blind...
But the track is not yet timeless. Something is missing. And that something is Sandy Denny.
Go ahead on this Sandy Saturday; lean into the band's version of Suzanne just a few months later when Dyble had been given the knitted boot and Denny had stepped up to claim the band as her own.
Matthews still carries the opening verse, yes, and the original arrangement remains in place. But now, the moment Ian's novelties begin to wear thin, we've got Denny gliding in for the second verse, and there she is alongside Matthews in the final verse as well. Sandy quavers with power and understatement throughout, commanding Matthews to raise his game a giant step. She glows within the track and turns it into big deal art. I trust her perfection with my mind.
youtube
Note the constraint Thompson brings to this later take; he knows he no longer needs to solo under the vocals; he knows he now had a peer in the band, someone to write songs alongside; someone to try and live up to. Like any other sensible male (paging Stephen Stills; Stephen Stills please get a clue), he knows he's stronger when deferring to a true peer.

REVIEW: Tipps and Obermiller “MacGuffin” @tippsandobermiller #johnapice @americanahighways #americanamusic #newmusic2024 #macguffin #americanahighways
Tipps and Obermiller – MacGuffin This is a brightly recorded album with some folky pop elements ala Lowen & Navarro. The songs have a balanced contrast between gender vocals keeping it interesting throughout. But what I found most attractive is Hilary Tipps’s lead vocal with its clarity & depth like the best female folk singers of the past from Joan Baez & Mimi Farina to Sandy Denny with the…

The praise is somewhat unexpected — and though she automatically has the urge to refute his kind words, she releases her breath and accepts it for the moment. “Thank you,” is all she has time to say, really, evenly, before he is addressing their new friend.
Within moments, the two of them burst into a beautiful melody. Their voices dance, play with one another, a symphony fitting for the beautiful greenery, for their new companionship. Fiora is entirely entranced at first — staring at the music that surrounds them. But hearing Rafiel’s voice... seeing him sway... something slightly melancholy comes to her. She wonders what this experience is like, for them. What that sort of joy feels like. She’s hummed before — into Florina and Farina’s hair, as the three of them huddled together for warmth, to attempt to lull them to sleep. She’s half-shouted, half-sung battle songs with her companies. But... she’s never sung like this. Unrestrained, unafraid... free.
When the song ends, and Rafiel tells her to release Museon, she does so wordlessly.
“That was beautiful,” she compliments — ah, her voice was a little hard there. How cruel of her. How selfish. “Really,” she assures, and her voice is pitched warmer now. Her smile is soft (even if her eyes are a bit too sad).
Whatever he is about to say is interrupted by a fluttering above them, in the trees. Fiora glances up... to see a box... using the drag of a small sheet of fabric, tied to it on a few points, to slow its descent.
She grabs her lance, and motions for the other two to get behind her. It may seem harmless, but after all, an arrow is only a stick, a feather, and some flint, and she’s known many to fall to them.
Fiora lets the box touch the ground of the forest floor before prodding it open with her lance, careful. There’s a piece of paper inside...
LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, WE HAVE A WINNER! it declares. She pushes it out of the way, and...
...
... ...
There’s nothing else in it. Just a box with a slip of paper.
As if this whole affair hasn’t been disquieting enough...
Team Four encountered a treasure chest! 1d32 -> 9 +10 to next D100!
“Let’s keep moving.” The anxiety in her chest and throat has only grown, an uncomfortable, constricting thing. The sooner they get out of here, the sooner they can be back at the monastery, safe, and with her sisters again...
Determined, she turns again westward, towards the sound of the water.
1d100 -> 68 + 10 -> 78!
For hours, the three of them walk. Museon and Rafiel sing, following, as Fiora leads and watches the lines of the forest for aggressive movement. She’s careful with her footing on the treacherous, bowing floor, and keeps the pace slow for Rafiel. It’s a long, taxing trek but, eventually, the trees thin, just so, and—
There they stand, free from the forest, blinking in the sudden sunlight. Fiora raises her hand to block it out, scans the horizon. There, indeed, is the water she’s been following, a somewhat sandy bank with light reeds. But it’s the movement of a creature that truly catches her eyes...
It is, again, an unfamiliar one. One part of this ‘game’, perhaps. It’s round, and gray, and small. Charm would be the best strategy to use here, she thinks... Surely Rafiel thinks the same?
