Wanting to ban problematic media is a dangerous and slippery slope because everyone has varying definitions of what constitutes such. In school districts in the USA, they are banning books about queer identities and history under the pretense of “protecting” children. They prohibit teachers from discussing and educating children about anything related to LGBTQ+ because they consider it a “problematic” subject.

“Actually, we’ll only ban media that are genuinely problematic!” Well, here’s the thing: problematic media have the right to exist and be available to us, the public, who can individually decide whether we want to engage with them. If a piece of media makes you uncomfortable, you hate it or a mixture of both, then you’re free to quit interacting with it. No one is forcing you to continue, and you can search for media you enjoy instead of advocating for censorship of ones you dislike.

You’ve got the freedom to decide what media you consume for yourself but not for others.
