Favorite fight: The fight in Haven in volume 5 where team rwby get together again. (The fight with curious cat is a close second!)

RWBY Volume 9s soundtrack is the best so far

I don't actually listen to music from an iPod btw, no it's far worse I use a btr7.

But to the point, up until now I have said that V3 and v4/5 (in my mind the same volume) have had the best music. With the exception of the absolute classic that v2's boop, caffeine and A Minor Hiccup.

But now V9 is here and the music is different.

Literally in that Casey has taken over but also in that it's adapted to the new setting of the ever after. The setting that like it's soundtrack constantly changes and confuses.

Take why are you still here, listen to the opener and then skip to the last bars and you could think you've skipped songs. And yet like a rush Garcia orchestration the transition is gorgeous.

But there's something off if you watch the show.

OST doesn't add up. Take my favorite of the volume, checkmate (sorry chatterbox) in scene it makes no sense, hits are off beat the chorus is clunky. But that's not the songs fault. The song is perfect.

And yet so is the scene. The chess fight is peak RWBY after V7/8s rather lackluster performance in choreography. A return to big metal shoe or the old days of pre Maya. It flows it has contrast and it shows unique combos. But with checkmate it just doesn't work.

Now let's look at the opposite. The cat fight and Ruby's return. Red like fucking Roses Part 3 literally pushes the scene forward, the 4 colors moving in incredible ways that blend together so well yet contrast during a combo and melt together for the final note.

Thats It, the final note and the action are synched. That's the difference, the balance of music and action.

George Lucas once jokingly told John knoll that it's not the audience won't be looking at the action, they won't be paying attention to the background, they'll be listening to the music.

George was joking but he's got a point, the music, particularly in RWBY with our over the top, wack you over the head with it, metal fights, is driven by musical action.

I really love the OST for RWBY I wish more shows did their OST like RWBY where you could listen to it on its own and still have the story told to you clearly.

Also Volume 4 and 5 really going ham with the background music where they mix some of the character themes whenever anyone mentions stuff from the previous volumes.

The songs help put some of the things the characters do in perspective before we even meet them fully, like when Salem first appeared at the end of volume 3 and we heard "Divide" at the end. We don't know who she is yet, but the song tells us her plans and thoughts (and it made me feel an utter sense of hopelessness as I clicked on that "next episode" button to volume 4)

Or how "The Triumph" is a direct response to "When it Falls" where the central message is that everyone is ready to get back out there and stop evil.

Chilli Beans managing to get into my Top Artists for wrapped solely due to the fact that I listened to both versions of Raise (a One Piece ED song) an ungodly amount of times is so funny to me lmao

Also fun fact, I took the translated lyrics from Raise and used them as the chapter titles for my fanfic magnum opus, “What’s Your Name?” [PLZ GO READ IT >:D]

• Jeff Williams was the guy behind RWBY’s OST before his daughter Casey (Who provided the vocals for his songs) took over for Volume 9. Complain about RWBY’s flaws all ya want, but the songs fucking SLAPS

• I listened to Run & Sleep Well (both by CG5) a lot this year, so I’m not surprised about CG5 being in my top artists lol

• I checked my top songs for 2024, and both of those songs wounded up as #11 and #7 on this list respectively. There were also 5 Jeff Williams songs in it too (probably would’ve been 7 if THE EDGE & GUIDE MY WAY WOULD COME BACK ONTO SPOTIFY. BOTH OF THOSE SONGS FUCKING SLAPPED-)

• I got more into Good Kid this year, and I don’t feel bad about it. I also listened to Dance Class an ungodly amount of times this year and that song ended up as #37

• I started listening to more Sonic music this year and my god does it slap. I listened to 3 versions of Chemical Plant Zone an ungodly amount of times this year (The OG Version from Sonic 2 and both acts from Generations), both versions of Nega Wisp Armor phase 2, a bunch of the vocal songs from Frontiers, and a bunch of the vocal songs from the anniversary symphony so yknow :p

• Everything in You & Quiet Room were both songs I found through animatics centering around Teaduo/Bagina & Tazercraft respectively. I think they’re both pretty neat :D

Minor update

I managed to find some really awesome stuff and wanted to give huge props to @blakeplusplus they're doing good work over on their server Archive of Pimps and they got a TON of stuff over there like The session, volumes 1 and 2 of the RWBY IQ manga, and the torrent files of RWBY volumes 5-9 japanese dub.

I managed to find season 1 and some of season 2 of RWBY Chibi ost (I will try to get more if possible but I'll have to learn some audio clipping)

But you came back, and I’m just so relieved that I’ll give you one more chance.”

After listening to the Volume 5 ost and more specifically, All That Matters, I've been thinking about Blake and Yang and how their conversation in Volume 6 will pan out so I decided to take the time to write out my little headcannon on how I think their conversation will be like.

Blake is going to notice Yang being distant from her which is obvious because of what happened. She's going to knock on Yang's door and Yang is going to ask: "Who is it?"

Blake will reply with: "It's Blake.."

This will startle Yang a little bit because she's not ready to talk to Blake again and she still kind of wants to avoid her a little longer. However, Yang doesn't want to be mean so she just simply says: "Come in.." in a lower tone to let Blake know that she doesn't really want her to be there.

Blake slowly opens the door and sees Yang laying down on her back with both hands behind her head using them as a pillow support. Yang tries to act a little casual about this as to not make it seem like she's not bothered by anything. Blake closes the door behind her, walks over to Yang's bedside, and sits at the corner of the bed near Yang's feet.

Blake says: "I want to talk with you." Yang tells Blake to get what she has out of her mind and to get on with it as if she has anything better to do. Blake struggles to get the words out since she doesn't know where to start from. She turns her head away from Yang and looks in the opposite direction so she doesn't see her face.

Blake in a sad tone says: "I hope you hate me for what I did." She also says: "I know what I did was wrong and that I should've checked up on you to see how you were doing with your recovery.. but.. but I was scared Yang. I'm a coward. I knew it was my fault that you lost your arm in the first place so I couldn't bear seeing you like that so I decided to leave so you didn't have to see my face after what I did to you."

Yang replies: "But you didn't do anything to me. I was just trying to protect you.." Blake then says: "But I didn't want you to get involved because I knew only bad things were going to happen if you did."

Yang replies: "Well that's the cost I have to pay for putting others before myself. It's my job to protect people so I was just doing you a favor. Yeah I might have gotten hurt in the process but protecting you was all that was important to me at that moment so I didn't care if I got hurt.. as long as you were safe. In return I was left alone to suffer without you by my side aiding me back to recovery. I wanted you here for me Blake. That was the only thing I wanted all along. Guess I wasn't important enough, and so that was the thanks I got for trying to save your life."

Blake feels guilty but she felt guilty even before she saw Yang back at Haven. She feels that she deserves being hated for leaving Yang like that. She wants her to hate her.

Blake replies: "I may have left you but that didn't stop me from saving your life too." Yang sat up straight on the bed so she can pay attention to what Blake was going to say next.

Blake continues: "When Adam cut your arm off, he walked toward you and almost finished you off but then I jumped in front of your body so he wouldn't touch you again. Just before he tried to slice me with his sword, I grabbed you in my arms and bolted out the door. I never ran so fast in my life. I felt like collapsing because of the strain I was putting on my wound from where I was stabbed, but I still pressed on because getting you to safety was all that mattered. I finally met back with Nora, Sun, and Ren at the front of the school where Atlas ships were docking to pick up the remaining students and take them to a safezone. I placed you on the floor and collapsed right next to you, clutching my stomach in pain while sobbing. I took your left hand and held it in mine and cried, apologizing to you like if you heard me. Seeing you like that made me want to run away because I didn't want anyone else to get hurt because of me. Realizing that I left, I hurt you anyway because I wasn't there for you. Everyone saw us on the floor in pain and witnessed everything that I said to you, but they didn't tell you because I wanted to be the one to tell you myself. I guess this is the part where I apologize if that even means anything to you. Whether you accept it or not, I don't deserve to be your friend. I've put you through so much pain for you to even want to consider me your friend because I don't know what kind of friend leaves someone behind after their life has been saved by them. If you end up giving me another chance, I promise that I won't leave you again Yang. I want to be here for you and give you the love and care that you deserve. After all you've been through, I know that you need someone to be by your side to cheer you up and give you the motivation you need to get back on your feet and to become a determined, and confident woman once again. I can do that for you Yang. It's the least that I can do to make it up to you. I just want us to be together again like the good old days where none of this nonsense was ever imaginable of happening. I know you think that I don't care about you at all considering that I left, but it's the complete opposite. I love you Yang. If I didn't care then I wouldn't have wasted my time trying to make things up with you and fix this issue between us."

Yang wipes her eyes and says: "I'll be willing to give you another chance because I want to trust you. Back in the Vytal Festival when I fought Mercury and everyone saw me attack him after the battle had finished, you said how you wanted to trust me because you knew that I wouldn't intentionally try to hurt someone, and you did. So I want you give you another chance like when you gave me one because I believe that you'll stay. I don't even care that you left anymore. I'm just happy you're here with me now because that's all that matters."

Blake turns her head to face Yang again and lets out a faint smile while tears drip down her cheeks. Without a moments hesitation, Yang wraps her arms around Blake and gives her a heartwarming hug. Under her breath Yang says: "I'm happy that you're back." Blake responds with: "Me too."

There's so many different ways that I thought this conversation could happen but I liked this possibility the most. It'd be cool to see how everyone else would think they'll talk things out. I'd definitely wanna read some possible conversations that can happen. This took me about an hour and a half to write cause I wanted to make sure that it would make sense but still show a lot of emotional value to it. Can't wait until volume 6! 💛🖤

Casey Lee Williams Confirming Things about the V5 OST

First off, Weiss Schnee does NOT cut herself!

She hates herself and constantly inflicts mental wounds to her psyche by thinking that she isn’t good enough. She isn’t proud of herself, and is rather insecure. (I’m crying for my Queen™)

Secondly, All Things Must Die is NOT about RAVEN, OR CINDER, but BOTH!

She said that it is lyrically and musically about both of them, and that you can’t really argue one or the other. (I shan’t be shunned for thinking it was about Raven!)

Finally, All That Matters IS From Yang to Blake! 

However, while this has been confirmed, it is still unknown as to the real implications of this song. She said that what is being sung about doesn’t always match up perfectly with the show, which we know is true because how else could Red Like Roses 2 exist? Ruby can’t actually talk to Summer, but it’s just an idea brought to life. She ended by saying that the song could, or could not be romantic. We’re pretty much just going to have to wait and see.
