I come here ... To tell you all a little accident that happened lately in my life lol so you can laugh of me or with Me!
It all started a couple of weeks ago. I was at the gym looking at my boy and noticed that I had a bunch of redish little spots all over my arms. I didn't pay it much mind because I have rosacea, sensitive skin and I am paper white so I always get very red all over my body.
But I started to worry when it began to become very red, almost purple and I had tiny teeny bruises all over my arms. They were like freckles but bruised. I took the chance when I had an appointment with my dermatologist and she simply said "it's the rosacea". Which I found weird because I have had rosacea for almost all my life and this was the first time happening.
But it only got worse from it, it appeared on my legs or my chest etc. And I tried to not pay it much mind, until I was getting ready for the gym once again and my mom gasped. I had BRUISES ALL OVER MY BACK, my inner arms they I couldn't easily see, the back of my legs. They didn't hurt but it looked like I had been completely beaten up!
I had an appointment with my doctor, he tried to decipher if it was a fungus, bacteria, parasite, etc. Until he stood up and said "... This looks more like an allergic reaction, have you eaten something out of the ordinary since this started?"
"No,"
"Medication?"
"No."
"Creams, body treatments?"
"No ... Well, I mean yeah but it's impossible,"
Around a month ago! I asked my dermatologist what I could use on my body they could help with the hydration. I have extremely dry skin and where I live is winter. They recommended Johnson & Johnson to me hypoallergenic baby oil, why? Because it's HYPOALLERGENIC.
Allergenic test, dropped the baby oil for a couple of days... GUESS WHO THE FUCK IS ALLERGIC TO BABY OIL?!?!
I mean ... I'm so frustrated and I feel so stupid 😂😂 WHO is allergic to baby oil?! It's used on BABIES!!!
This is insulting.

I literally have had a malar rash for over a week and my doctor blew me off bc I tested negative for my ana last year. Is there anything I can do to help with the burning sensation?
oh my god i’m so sorry, i know that pain is so fucking distressing + impairing and it’s absolutely neglectful of your doctor not to both run your rheum panel again & prescribe you a topical steroid for management in the meantime. jesus christ that’s so fucked, you don’t deserve this.
feel free to just skip this paragraph if this isn’t an option for you but if you’re able to access a different doctor i think it could be worth trying just for symptom management — when i was struggling to get in with a rheum i visited a dermatologist & while she unfortunately just recommended my future rheum put me on hydroxychloroquine without doing it herself, she at least gave me the steroid cream which helps so much with the pain. & that’s something a PCP who was actually interested in treating patients rather than gatekeeping care could prescribe even if they thought you have rosacea not lupus.
gonna divide this into type of strategy just so all my advice is clustered in the same post but some of this might not be relevant to you, feasible, affordable/accessible, etc. as always other folks feel free to add advice if you have any!
basically your goal is to minimize sun (especially UV rays) as much as possible, to your face especially but your whole body as needed.
immediate term:
stay indoors as much as possible + close the blinds/curtains
outdoors: sunscreen + hat + long sleeves/pants (loose/thin material in the heat)
if you drive, bike, or do another activity where your hands are exposed to sunlight, wearing gloves; UV blocking fabric is most effective but anything is better than nothing
for pain relief: i haven’t found anything that helped more than temporarily (other than the steroid cream obv) but an unscented lotion, aloe vera, or cream can help for a little bit. similarly damp soft cloths, baby wipes, or gel bead ice packs just kinda draped gently over your face.
longer term ways to limit sun exposure:
full curtains (possibly blackout curtains)
tinted car windows
UV-blocking fabric
this is really only feasible in my situation because i’m in a car with someone supportive but should i become able to leave the house again my plan is literally just to have a blanket over my head lmao

Please put the beauty industry on blast for often treating chronic incurable skin conditions and even stuff like mild temporary acne as things you can just ~solve~ by buying expensive creams/treatments, “drinking more water,” or “not being fat/dirty.” 🙃
OOOOOOOHHHHH MY GOD I WILL BLAST THEM ALL DAY FOR THIS.
Also Christ, I went through so many drafts of this because I just kept rambling because there is SO MUCH to say about this, way more than what I have here. Kristin and I have talked about this kind of thing S O much. Under a cut because it is LONG.
First and foremost: There are no skin conditions that come to mind that involve being fat or dirty. N O N E. As my instructor likes to say, "Did you rub dirt on your face? Then you're not dirty." I won't even elaborate on the fat thing because that's just ridiculous and honestly boils down to the same thing (because of course "Fat People are Dirty Sweaty Grease-Soaked Slobs"). Y'all wanna know what causes most of the common disorders?
Acne - Genetics/hormones, friction, or skin sensitivities. Congrats, you're really good at producing sebum, a vital component of your skin's protective barrier!
Keratosis Pilaris - Genetics, occasionally made worse by harsh exfoliation. Congrats, you're really good at producing keratin, the building block protein that makes up skin, hair, and nails!
Rosacea - Who the Fuck Knows, but the National Rosacea Society hypothesizes that it's either down to the way your immune and neurovascular systems function, serious systemic diseases (none of which are Obesity), or a species of mite that everyone has on their skin already.
Psoriasis - Immune disorder.
Eczema - Who the Fuck Knows, probably a combo of genetics and environmental factors.
HS - Who the Fuck Knows, but probably genetics/hormones.
All of these things have flare-ups or cyclic behavior, btw. Flareups can have a hundred causes, it just depends on the individual! Stress is common across the board, but it's far from the only one. What doesn't happen? Get breakouts or flare-ups by being Dirty or Fat or Eating Poorly. Your skin just Does Stuff. So many genetic disorders come down to "My skin makes More or Less of something than is ideal for my body" or "My body is Very Protective of me." Literally, every disorder pretty much comes down to genetics, illness, or Who the Fuck Knows (because there is not enough research being done on way too many disorders). And none of this is simply "fixed" or "cured" by throwing money at the problem, regardless of what anyone tells you.
Does a skincare routine make your skin feel good? Sure! Soft skin feels nice and might give your mental health a boost because you're doing something nice for yourself most days. Also you do a lot of blood flow stimulation in the process and that might make you feel a bit more energized. But if you have a disorder and you feel like you've Tried Everything to no avail, it is not your fault, either. Skin, entire functioning organ that it is, is so much more complex than a skincare routine makes it seem.
My biggest takeaway from this education has just been Bodies Do Stuff and Everyone's Skin is Different. If you have a skin disorder, including all the hundreds of disorders I didn't mention, you are not dirty or bad or gross. Your skin just Does Stuff and the Beauty and Wellness industries are really bad at saying, accepting, and teaching this - it doesn't make money, after all.

skincare routine... yes. kinda messy atm because i have new prescription rosacea treatment, but i like a cream cleanser (preceded by a balm in the evenings), a face oil (skin rocks brand), moisturiser mixed with a little niacinamide, and spf. a few times a week, i'll use an AHA + PHA toner to exfoliate, and maybe a sheet mask too

How is your skin so glowy?
I usually had pretty good skin, but I had to go on very strong medication in 2021/2022, gained a ton of weight + severe acne. I went on antibiotic medication to get rid of it (and had to stop the other medication). I also use a cream antibiotic, azelaic acid, cetaphil ar calm and cicaplast b5 and sunscreen. It’s a lot, I know, but it helps with my rosacea acne. I also used soolantra which is the usual treatment but my acne was so harsh that it never really responded to it. I want to make a longer post about it with more details, but this is essentially what happened to my skin and how I treat it.
