SMASH COMICS #14 (September, 1940). Cover by Gill Fox.

This issue presented the origin and first appearance of The Ray, one of Quality Comics' powerhouse superheroes.

The Ray first appears, albeit without pants. He would have those in the next issue, but then mysteriously be missing his distinct head fin. Art by Lou Fine, who signed his work on The Ray "E. Lectron."

The Ray would later become more well known as a member of the Freedom Fighters in Justice League of America (vol. 1) #107 (October, 1973), almost two decades after DC Comics had acquired all of Quality's characters when that company went out of business in 1956.

whenever i see people defend having ai in everything because they believe we are on the cusp of the great singularity blah blah sci-fi magic future that does not (& most likely will not ever) exist:

#humanoid robotics do exist & are in their infancy but they will never be anything more than sex dolls filled w REMs mined by child slaves #hot take maybe but literal objectification of peoples (& lets be real mostly womens) bodies is fucked up bad not cyberpunk cool!#god and the whole character ai chat bots where people 'talk to' their fave blorbos is so anti-social and sad #'its the future accept it!' current trends arent natural phenomenon like rain. theyre pushes by women hating tech bro capitalists. thats al #theres a world that could have these technologies (advanced ai not the sex dolls part) & be fine but we dont live there!!#maybe one day scifi magic 'ai that is actually sentient' question could be real but you are delulu to think its not lifetimes away #i just watched measure of a man last night (probably why this is on my mind) & it was great. data is a machine but also is indeed a person!#i hate to break it to everyone though (especially as a baby trekkie myself) that star trek is unfortunately not a documentary #im not getting into it rn but it drives me crazy that so many popular MLs on this site turn into sniveling But My Treats liberals over ai 🙄

#the mechanisms #the mechanisms fanart #drumbot brian #art #digitial art #spent waaay too long trying to figure out how a robot body would move #bc humans are squishy! so much of how our movement works is based on the fact that our body parts can squish on top of each other #limb trying to move but the edge of the torso in the way? don't worry it'll just squish out of the way!#but brass doesn't squish!! i based him mostly off of ball jointed dolls #most obvious on his joints #but how his torso bends? man idk #also i had some ideas but god forbid i knew how to *draw* it #so his torso is in 3 sections (again: ball jointed doll) and then his rib section #has a back and front piece connected internally with hinges (which allows his sides to bend inwards for foward arm movement)#his shoulder blades as you can see are squares attached with hinges attached externally with hinges which allows his torso to bend back #which allows his arm a greater range of movement backwards without having 360 movable shoulder joints #1) bc carmilla probably tried to recreate human range of movements and idk who needs to hear this #but humans do not have 360 shoulder movement #2) relying on the ball joint for movement only is weak. for the strength of the attachment #2a) you have to pick between flexibility and strength when it comes to attaching 1 thing to another thing bc the more something moves-#-the less points of anchorage you have #2b) the brass of his upper arm and shoulder would constantly be rubbing against each other slowly wearing both away #which for an immortal brass maybe isn't the BIGGEST concern but i can't imagine it's very comfortable. so mitigate it #i might actually draw out a diagram of how i think Brian works. and it will be different from this drawing #bc tbh i did not put a ton of thought into it for this drawing. i would of torn my hair out #speaking of hair: brian's is made of copper wire. you ever part the hair on a doll and see bald head? yeah same situation with brian

oh yeah, FYI every residents’ appearances are altered because of them giving up their soul up to Blizzie/to the hotel + losing their grip of reality, instead giving in to the despair they believe in (a.k.a. “going insane”, air quotes)

similar to the latter half, sometimes their appearances are altered due to them losing grip of reality and instead living in their own little reality that they believe in instead that was created by a strong positive moment in their life that they desperately want to go back to again.

then we got odd cases like Jibanyan’s… Yeah so basically any of the hotel owners (Blizzie, Whisper, Junior) any alter anybody’s appearances to their likings, thanks to the remaining powers Blizzie has. Why? Why not.

#☆ (it’s time to make history!)#☆ (yo-kai horror show AU)#the whole altering their appearance based after a positive moment in their life was so strongly based after #the koma siblings being in the roles of the cactus siblings (cactus gunman + cactus girl) PLUS komami being in the role of lost doll #also manjimutt is kinda an odd case?? although he went mad while in the hotel it also caused dandoodle to pop into the hotel and #now suddenly they’re both robot-like things with scales attached to them passing out judgements as they go around.#and they both hate it. dandoodle doesn’t mind it that much since he has gold plating and has high respect compared to any other residents i #the hotel but manjimutt? oh man does he hate it.

I think if I let my heart win and money wasn't an issue I'd have way more decorative book boxes than I could come up with things to put in them.

For this one, I decided to use a limited color palette of just one marker per color (Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Green, and Purple).
