Yes yes... however, this AU would call for either two Drakes interaction: the Drakes are amazing fabulous parents who love all of their new kids or they are absent and either don't care or don't know Tim is adopting every sibling he sees. You couldn't reasonable do abusive Drakes in this AU and have all the kids agree to be adopted (Cass would leave and steal everyone else with her).

I'm all for Tim stealing his siblings from Bruce, but another funny AU would be a reverse batkids age order one. Tim, after his parents die at like 12, just makes up a fake guardian for himself. Then Duke's parents get gassed/Duke starts a gang. Tim instantly adopts him as older brother material.

Damian, after seeing Tim trying to help Duke, gets interested in what they are doing. Tim latches on to *another* older brother material (and this one can teach him cool fight moves!)

Cass, who sees Tim helping some people out, decides to follow him. Tim decides younger sister material.

Tim, when out and about, gets hit by a brick in the face? New friend! (You can decide how their relationship progresses)

Another one of my Batfam fics, also untitled, involves Bruce designing a "teamwork exercise" for the Batkids (Dick, Jason, Tim, Steph, Cass, Damian, and Duke) because they still kinda struggle to work as a cohesive team half the time. So he comes up with a challenge: in two weeks, Catwoman is going to steal something from a museum in the city. Their job is to identify it and steal it before she does.

The catch? Batman is going to try to stop them.

He offers a reward for them: if his kids succeed, Batman will deliver a PowerPoint presentation to the members of the Justice League explaining exactly how they beat Bruce. If they lose, they have to do the same in reverse. Nothing like humiliating Bruce as an incentive to work together!

Of course, beating Batman isn't easy, especially because he's had plenty of time to anticipate what his kids might do and how to defeat them, and also he's Batman. The Batkids are fully aware of this and have to find a way to steal the item before Catwoman does and before Batman stops them.

In the fic, the kids win because it's funny, but I'm not sure how I would actually have them pull it off. A couple of ideas:

Pretend that they're not working together well in order to fool Bruce into thinking they won't be able to beat him (unlikely to work because he would probably anticipate this)

Find and exploit as many loopholes in the rules and end goal Bruce set to minimize damage to the museum (also unlikely to work, since Bruce would carefully craft what he wrote in order to lead them towards certain loopholes he prepared for)

Think up and implement as many plans as possible to overwhelm Batman while hiding the True Plan (potentially viable)

Involve a significant amount of randomization into the plan, since it's very hard to predict randomness (potentially viable)

Work completely independently from each other and hope one person manages to succeed (potentially viable but also violates the spirit of the exercise)

Put Damian in charge and obey everything he says (viable because Bruce doesn't think the others would let Damian be in charge)

Do absolutely no planning whatsoever and hope they can wing it well enough during the actual theft to pull it off (viable, but not as fun for me to plan)

Don't bother trying to defeat Batman and instead spend the two weeks finding other ways to humiliate him (Steph and Jason like this one)

Some combination of the above (what will probably happen if I ever write this)

The fic would be mostly from Bruce's POV as he tries to figure out what his kids are planning, interspersed with scenes from their planning session showing how they came up with their ideas. Gotta keep the suspense up somehow!

I finally fucking got to reading some Duke comics and now I’ve gotta talk about reverse robins because where tf do I fit him in with how I’m structuring my AU

now I am a firm believer in swapping order but keeping their backstories the same with the only things changing being the things that make sure there is a new Robin (so like Dick going to Blud, Jason dying, Tim getting benched/quitting etc but w their counterparts)

this makes Duke difficult though, since he doesn’t fit into the usual Batkids formula (which I love and find to be such a breath of fresh air but makes fitting him in so difficult 😭😭)

but after thinking on it if I were to choose a character to pair him with it’d be Tim so please hear me out:

- Tim and Duke both are very intelligent, figuring out secret identities of the Bats (Tim: Bruce and Dick, Duke: Damian and Alfred).

- their parental situations

- the reasons they became vigilantes not being because Bruce picked them (ok, Duke kinda debatable because Alfred but shh)

- Dick and Tim’s swapped with Damian and Duke would be better than Damian and Jason if you look at their interactions

based on these things their stories are swappable, though it still doesn’t entirely work with how I want to do the others. mostly because I can’t move We Are Robin and make it make sense. as I’ve said I for the most part want their stories to be kept and giving We Are Robin away just makes me itch

the other reason I’m hesitant to do so is bc it would require me to find someone else to pair up with Jason and that that is basically impossible 🧍

anyways if anyone has suggestions please let me know, I’ve been reading RR posts and very little even have Duke so I’m out of inspo

Reverse Robins: Joker Junior series by miyaji_08 i rec’d the second fic in this series over here for the timkon of it all, but the series—two parts, both complete—is also one of my absolute favorite reverse robins stories. it goes the joker junior!tim route, so heads up for A Lot of tim-centric trauma, but gives tim (and everyone else) so much healing, too. it also gets creative with the robin of it all, as in, the call sign for batman’s partner is different from the jump because dick wasn’t around to originate “robin” for it, which i always think is a fun extra detail. the batfam characters are great and the young justice crew is also great, so read for top-tier hurt and comfort and great characters and satisfying plot and tim and damian competing to see who is the most Tired big brother of the bunch.

blood of the covenant by envysparkler robins are angsty in any order, but man does this hit the angst sweet spot, which in turn makes the soft parts feel even softer. i genuinely can’t decide what my favorite dynamic is in this AU, between damian & tim (damian wracked with guilt, tim hurting and still wanting an older brother even if he’d never admit it) and tim & jason (no spoilers but chapter 4 especially lights my brain up like a supernova) and tim & dick (i think about the part where dick grayson [tiny, cheerful] uses tim [undead, annoyed] as a jungle gym like once a week).

Wing Beats in Reverse by firefright a longfic where jason gets kidnapped by the mysterious red hood, who turns out to be jason’s not-so-dead predecessor. the jason pov here is great, and i was so compelled by how this AU explored his place in the bat family, and how it managed the emotional fallout from the kidnapping. tim is also so interesting in this—it does something i love in a reverse robins concept, which is make tim’s motivations (and lazarus pit effects) less about anger/hurt/revenge and more about ice cold logic, about being the villain so the bats don’t have to/whether they want him to or not. plus some league of assassins trauma as a cherry on top. also, kon gets to show up for a bit. (as a fair warning—and spoilers ahead—the fic has a somewhat hopeful ending for tim, but doesn’t reach full reconciliation in the scope of the plot.)

i woke up so worried that the angels let go by circees a short but potent batkids age reversal au that’s also a grisha au, starring duke as the coveted sun summoner that damian is trying to deliver to safety without mentally adopting a new brother (damian fails on the second part). even with my limited memory of grisha lore i could tell a lot of thought was put into this au, and i have a feeling it would be even better if you are able to catch all the details. i also love that even in a fantasy world where some of the bat family have magical abilities, duke is still extra special—a great analogy to being a metahuman among the bats.

The 90s Are Back! by RedWritingHood saving the two silly ones for last to lighten the mood! in this one, red hood!tim gets de-aged to sixteen and meets all his new siblings. it’s like .01% angst and 99.99% shenanigans, and pretty much all the dialogue is super quotable but Dick holds out his hands like he's calming a bunch of wild animals. "Okay, I know everyone's real upsetti spaghetti right now, but I think we all just need to calm down." might take the cake.

Clowns Don’t Kill People by mademoisellePlume very short, very silly reverse robins brother shenanigans, in which tiny dick grayson isn’t scared of recovering joker junior!tim because dick, having been raised in the circus, doesn’t associate clowns with evil yet. the fic is fun (and a great palate cleanser if you need a break from the angst above), and the author’s note at the end made me fully laugh out loud.

I actually really like the idea of a reverse robin/batkids au. i think it could be a really interesting character study to see how their birth order/ the order the were adopted in changes things.

unfortunately i haven't come across a single interesting looking fic, because they all seem to just tell the canon (really the fanon) storyline and just change the names around. like, thats just so boring???

its also usually just an excuse to wombify dick and jason and give tim jasons character arc. which is also boring.

im not going to touch on the weird batcest side of it but that is also just so icky.

I’ve finally decided to post this because I have many thoughts on many things and one (1) person asked about it. Awhile ago, I complained about how boring I found Reverse Robins AUs. In that post, I also made a comment about how much creative liberty there could be in this AU, and this is the result.

“Who is included? Is it just the bats or is it all the generations? If it’s just the bats, what are their relationships with the other heroes? Did their fates swap too or are their destinies written in stone?”

This AU reverses the order in which the Batkids become Robins/Bats. I want to keep their fates relatively close to comics canon, so they’ll join at the same age as they do in OG timeline, meaning their ages aren’t necessarily reversed. The ones who became Bats as adults (Bruce, Luke, Jean-Paul, Helena, Kate, etc) keep their original timelines. I also couldn’t decide if the other kid heroes were reversed, so I keep it intentionally vague… I dunno. It could go either way.

It began when Matt McGinnis became the anonymous detective, Robin Hood, seeking to uncover the damning secrets of Gotham’s corrupt upper class. His work inspired dozens of teenagers across Gotham. The most notable was the We Are Robin movement, which protested against corruption in politics, law enforcement, and corporations.

Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham just as the W.A.R. movement turned into a burgeoning teenage vigilante force. He found himself corralling angry teenagers way out of their depth just as frequently as he spent scaring the shit out of criminals — often simultaneously.

Terry, fresh out of juvie, attempted an assassination of the corporate mogul who had ordered his father’s death. He was stopped by Batman, but Terry found his new calling as a vigilante.

Duke was another teenager Bruce kept running into, and this one, Bruce decided to mentor and foster.

Sometime after Bruce took in Duke, Talia appeared with Damian, and they played happy family. It didn’t last much longer when Ra’s Al Ghul appeared to take back his heir, and Talia gave up her life with Bruce to lead her father away. For a while, it was just Bruce, Alfred, Duke, and Damian.

Because “Robin” was the catch-all title for any teenage vigilante in Gotham, Steph took to the streets as another Robin to stop Cluemaster. Steph endeared herself to Damian like an annoying little sister, and soon enough, she became a beloved member of the Batfamily.

Cass appeared after the Cataclysm. She had been particularly attached to Stephanie, both in and out of costume. After Steph was killed by Black Mask, she switched gears and assigned herself as Bruce’s protector, both in the streets and from himself.

Tim was another child Cass liked to follow around Gotham. It was because of Cass that Tim figured out Batman was Bruce Wayne. Tim hatched a plan to bring Damian back to Gotham as Batman’s Robin but was uno-reversed and ended up taking on that responsibility himself.

Jason stole Batman’s tires. Bruce had been so endeared by him and quickly adopted him. Jason did not become Robin until after Bruce was “killed” by Darkseid. Shortly after Bruce returned, Jason was betrayed by his bio-mother and killed by the Joker.

Toward the latter months of Jason’s time as Robin, Barbara Gordon debuted as Batgirl. Ever since she had been a young child, she had idolized Steph’s iteration of Batgirl. She didn’t really get close to the Batfamily until she was hired as Dick’s babysitter.

Dick Grayson’s parents died midst-performance. Bruce had been drawn to the similarities between their parents’ deaths and directly took him in once it became apparent Haley’s Circus had no legal claim on Dick’s guardianship. It had taken literally the entire collection of vigilante family and friends to keep Dick within an acceptable radius of where he should have been. Dick eventually won in the battle of perseverance and became his own Robin, donned in his family colors instead of the traditional black and red.

I think the difficulty of a Reverse Robins AU for me is that I expect a bunch of things to be true that aren't always. and I do have a lot of leeway because it's more a vibes thing! but it makes it difficult to plan one even in my head. it's like

ages have to be reversed, obv. this is really difficult for Helena since she's simultaneously the second oldest and the youngest. also an issue since I go in introduction order, not in-text age.

adoption order also has to be strictly reversed. this includes other items like Tim becoming Robin, Jason coming back to life, Dick getting formally adopted, etc.; everything has to be switched

their backstory, including tragedies that left them orphaned, abandoned, etc. has to remain attached to the character as in the original story. BUT

their narrative, including their method of adoption, has to follow whichever character they're replacing, which does require a bit of fiddling to stick the pieces together

it also means that whoever gets adopted after Damian (or Mattie, if you're including him) has to wait a LONG time if you're following the timeline strictly

which is why you could like. reverse the vibes? but then you have to really piece apart what each character's vibes are doing as they get added to the family and that's extremely thematically complex. and you can only do one or the other

One of the things that I would most want to explore if I ever get around to writing a Reverse Robins and/or Reverse Batkids AU is how much Bruce has changed over time. Dick era Bruce who makes puns and comes up with silly names just to get his kid to giggle would be matched up with Duke and/or Damian, Jason era Bruce who was maximum doting father would be matched up with Tim and Steph and/or Cass. Tim/Steph era Bruce who was grieving and violent and trying to be more urban legend than man would be paired up with Jason and/or Cass. Modern era Bruce who is so serious and emotionally constipated but trying his hardest and has lost so much and gained so much and honestly seems kinda lost would be paired up with Dick and/or Duke (this doesn’t really take into account all of modern/Damian/Duke era since that Bruce has been all over the place, so I’m going with my read of him in the most current comics).

Anyway, I think about this a lot. As well as how, given the different circumstances, each kid would join the Batfamily and how they would transition from out of Batman’s shadow.

For the record even though no one asked, Reverse Robins order is Damian, Barbara, Tim, Stephanie, Tim, Cassandra, Jason, Dick, Duke. Reverse Batkids order is Duke, Damian, Cassandra, Tim, Stephanie, Tim, Jason, Barbara, Dick. Whether it’s Tim, Stephanie, Tim or just Tim, Stephanie, next person depends on how hard I want to push my Red Hood Stephanie Agenda.
