THANK FUCKING GOD
"The Supreme Court on Thursday [June 13, 2024] unanimously preserved access to a medication that was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year, in the court’s first abortion decision since conservative justices overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago.
The nine justices ruled that abortion opponents lacked the legal right to sue over the federal Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the medication, mifepristone, and the FDA’s subsequent actions to ease access to it. The case had threatened to restrict access to mifepristone across the country, including in states where abortion remains legal.
Abortion is banned at all stages of pregnancy in 14 states, and after about six weeks of pregnancy in three others, often before women realize they’re pregnant.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was part of the majority to overturn Roe, wrote for the court on Thursday that “federal courts are the wrong forum for addressing the plaintiffs’ concerns about FDA’s actions.”
The opinion underscored the stakes of the 2024 election and the possibility that an FDA commissioner appointed by Republican Donald Trump, if he wins the White House, could consider tightening access to mifepristone, including prohibiting sending it through the mail...
Kavanaugh’s opinion managed to unite a court deeply divided over abortion and many other divisive social issues by employing a minimalist approach that focused solely on the technical legal issue of standing and reached no judgment about the FDA’s actions...
While praising the decision, President Joe Biden signaled Democrats will continue to campaign heavily on abortion ahead of the November elections. “It does not change the fact that the right for a woman to get the treatment she needs is imperiled if not impossible in many states,” Biden said in a statement...
About two-thirds of U.S. adults oppose banning the use of mifepristone, or medication abortion, nationwide, according to a KFF poll conducted in February. About one-third would support a nationwide ban...
More than 6 million people [in the U.S.] have used mifepristone since 2000. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone and primes the uterus to respond to the contraction-causing effect of a second drug, misoprostol. The two-drug regimen has been used to end a pregnancy through 10 weeks gestation...
Biden’s administration and drug manufacturers had warned that siding with abortion opponents in this case could [have] undermined the FDA’s drug approval process beyond the abortion context by inviting judges to second-guess the agency’s scientific judgments. The Democratic administration and New York-based Danco Laboratories, which makes mifepristone, argued that the drug is among the safest the FDA has ever approved."
-via AP, June 13, 2024
--
Note: A massive relief and a genuine victory - this will preserve access to the medication used in 2/3rds of abortions last year, for at least another 2 years. (Probably minimum time it will take Republicans to get their next attempt before the Supreme Court.)
Still, with this, a sword that has been hanging over our heads for the last two years is gone. There will be a new one soon, but we just bought ourselves probably at least 2 years. The fight isn't over, but this is absolutely worth celebrating.

Just to emphasize: Mike Johnson is an antivaxxer, an anti-abortion, forced bither, he believes the job of poor women is to give birth to an infinite supply of low wage jobseekers, he is a climate change denier, he wants to cut Social Security + Medicare + Medicaid, and he’s a “Trump won!” Republican. And House Republicans just unanimously voted for him as Speaker of the House.
Please take note: there are no “moderates” in the Republican Party.

“A House panel advanced the Kids Online Safety Act bill, also known as KOSA, on Wednesday, pushing forward legislation intended to boost online privacy and safety for children.”
1) sign this petition and share it everywhere on social media @Twitter @Tiktok @Reddit https://www.youthagainstkosa.com/
2) call house leadership (see numbers here). This is a VERY important step. Again, use these call scripts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IyBUe6frFGF44rJQU3TahZ5zyG3tC7jai_hPneAKlnM/edit
3) Call the House Energy and Commerce Committee Here
There is a very big possibility this passes. We HAVE to put pressure on leadership and these politicians and show them this is a poision bill that WILL HARM children.

People really hating on Alicent over her getting an abortion (or more likely using the equivalent to plan b) and some going as far to say that the use of moontea is “against her faith” like girlie what happened to a woman’s right to choose?

This is a very very unfinished thought but I've been thinking a lot as I reread the books about how the women of House of the Dragon don't really get catharsis and how that'll likely be worse in S2. Say what you want about asoiaf but a number of named women there experience catharsis.
They kill their abusers (Lysa, Cersei, Dany). They regain some agency after a violation (Lysa, Cersei, Lady Stoneheart, Dany), and they refuse to forgive the people complicit in their subjugation (Lysa, Cersei, Dany, Lady Stoneheart, Jeyne Westerling).
Obviously, three or four isn't enough in such an expansive cast of characters but the point remains that they claw back their autonomy however they have to. They're allowed to be angry, bitter, unforgiving and cruel to their abusers in a way women in House of the Dragon just aren't allowed. They're allowed grief, grief that is violent and destructive.
The women of House of the Dragon don't get angry. They stand around and stare plaintively at the camera, they cry prettily, and they plead for peace and non-violence. They suffer and suffer and suffer and there's no relief.

tbh i can't stop thinking about our election next year. it's the first one im going to be voting in and a big part of me is scared that the conservative party will win due to the fact everyone's sick of trudeau. i don't like him either. jagmeet singh is clearly the best choice for this country but voting for the ndp is essentially throwing away your vote. next october vote for trudeau. he's the lesser of the two evils. i know a lot of canadians who think that we'll be fine because we aren't in the us but pierre poliviere (along with the other 119 conservative members of parliament) is openly anti-choice. i know we have a ways to go before the election is held but please keep the tragedy that has happened in the us in the back of your mind when voting. even if it seems like the most morally correct way to go, voting third party/not voting at all is going to fuck us over in the end.

Good morning lovelies
I’m going to be blunt and straight to the point - the election results are horrifying. As a woman who has personally needed an abortion. As a woman who identifies as queer. As a WOMAN this is horrifying.
I’m lucky enough to say I’m in a hetero- appearing relationship so my love life isn’t directly impacted AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME.
MANY of my friends and family will not be able to say the same thing.
I have a transgender sister receiving gender affirming care. This will soon be removed by project 2025
I cannot even begin to imagine how much this is going to change our country. All I can say is I’m scared. I’m sure a lot of other people are scared too. We must remember to stay alive and keep fighting. We must be strong and we must have a voice.
Be kind to yourself today 🤍

[staring wistfully at my google docs] i once had a divine highness ball au where gideon is whisked away to the first before harrow opens the tomb therefore harrows parents are still alive to insist harrow have children and continue the tombkeeper's line. they give harrow an ultimatum: if she cant find a spouse at the first house ball, she will be forced to return home and have a child with ortus. and if she cant make a deal with one of the other houses for vat wombs or other reproductive equipment, she will have to carry a child to term the old-fashioned way, even if it kills her. and then of course, suprise! the heir to the first is long lost gideon nav. lots of political machinations and interpersonal schemes. harrow at one point tries to baby trap gideon. ianthe is also there.

it also once again makes me painfully aware of the woes of being a dragon age dwarf enjoyer (<- being starved for proper lore) 😔
#cant believe they will just say yeah they have all these very strict rules and structures that dictates pretty much all life in orzammar#(and even outside of orzammar!)#and then didnt even think through how that would affect society and life and everything let alone give us more info on it#lay rambles#literally even the 'children take on the caste of their same sex parent' which comparatively comes up very early and very frequently#and is a pretty damn significant part of how orzammar is structured!#is very obviously not thought through#because that would have a huge impact on the balance of sexes in different houses and on caste and family relations#among other things#or how orzammar is desperate for children and yet if a child is born casteless the casteless status is still more important#the combination of how important social standing is but also they cant let casteless die out because they are integral to how orzammar func#*functions#in general the role of the casteless is so juicy and interesting honestly#or say. how does a society that puts so much value in reproduction treat those who cannot reproduce#and how does all of that affect gender#is there a separate role/gender/whatever for people who cant have children?#would they be ostracised because of it or maybe even held in high regard bc they are the ones who can do The Dangerous Jobs#like joining the forces who protect the thaig against darkspawn or mine lyrium without having to risk loss of fertility?#(but would then ofc be *expected* to take on those jobs)#would it make women be held in higher regard and men more expendable?#imagine if houses had matriarchs who have a lot of social influence and power regardless of their actual rank within the house#because they successfully produced and raised a lot of children#but yeah idk i'm just rambling now lol#dragon age dwarves are cool i wish bioware wouldn't forget them all the time. is what i'm saying

Do you need more proof that Republicans are becoming even more homophobic by the week?
Whenever you hear somebody thinking of sitting out the election or ruminating about wasting a vote on some automatic loser third party, remind them of the insidious evil which the Republican Party has become.
MAGA Mike Johnson is now the highest ranking Republican in the US. He received every single vote of GOP House members, including the alleged moderates, to become House Speaker.
15 Not-Fun Facts About Speaker Mike Johnson
1. He masterminded Trump’s election coup. 2. He's the least-experienced House Speaker in 140 years. 3. He worked for the conservative legal group behind the case that ended Roe v. Wade. 4. He wants to ban abortion nationwide. 5. He blamed abortion for school shootings. 6. He also blamed abortion for Social Security and Medicare cuts. 7. He blamed mass shootings on the teaching of evolution. 8. He fought to make taxpayers fund a Noah’s Ark theme park. 9. He fought to ban same-sex marriage in Louisiana. 10. He led an anti-gay campus movement. 11. He wrote a lot of homophobic op-eds. 12. He introduced a national version of Florida's "Don’t Say Gay" bill. 13. He was an advocate for "covenant marriage," which makes it harder to divorce. 14. He blamed post-Katrina looting on America turning away from God. 15. He doesn't believe in the separation of church and state.
^^^ click the link to New York Magazine just above the list for details.
The 2024 election pits the 17th century against the 21st century. Republicans don't accept any of that newfangled thinking from The Enlightenment.

This is now a anti-Project 2025 account exclusively (i will edit this post with more stuff later probably)
Tumblr media
Project 2025 is Trump’s plan, written by the Heritage Foundation for him, that he will enact should he win the 2024 election in November. If you have heard the name floating around but don’t know what it is, you need to read this post right now, because America is in real danger of a democratic collapse
Project 2025 is a 900-page document (Read it here) that goes over all the plans to kickstart a fascist takeover (they already attempted it once on Jan 6) of America by force. It is not hyperbole, it is not a joke, it can become our reality. In fact. It’s already the reality for many red states such as Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, etc. These states have enacted anti-LGBTQIA+, anti-abortion, anti-freedom of religion policies already, which completely tracks with what P2025 wants to do. These states are being used as lab rats, P2025 is just the plan to take these draconian policies nationwide.
Tumblr media
Some of P2025’s policies include:
*Centralizing power to the Executive Branch, whilst weakening the independence of federal agencies. This will give Trump, in conjunction with the completely un-constitutional presidential immunity granted to him by a corrupt Supreme Court, more power than any President has ever had. It would effectively make him the first American dictator.
*Criminalize trans existence, imprisoning librarians who have books that contain LGBTQIA+ content.
*Eliminate the Department of Education
*Remove anti-discrimination protection laws for racial minorities, LGBTQIA+ people, disabled people, women, etc.
*Pull us out of initiatives that takes action against climate change (bye-bye earth).
*Enact the “biggest mass deportation of immigrants in American history”, which Trump has said will be a “bloody story”. I’m sure this can only end well for anyone who isn’t white.
*Weaponize the department of Justice against dissent (such as protestors).
*Promote anti-abortion and pro-family (the cishet and married with children family model) values globally.
*Remove the teaching of Critical Race Theory (systematic racism) and Gender Studies from all public schools.
*Give major tax cuts to the rich while giving tax raises on the poor and middle class.
*Destroy the separation between church & state.
And many more horrifying and completely out of touch plans…
The end goal of all this is to transform America into a christian theocracy that prioritizes white christian nationalists over all other groups.
Tumblr media
Read more about the long history behind the dangerous pro-authoritarian movement and far-right machinery that birthed P2025 here.
From education, to women’s rights, MAGA is coming for all of us. And if we don’t pay attention to what they are saying and doing, we will pay a heavy price. We need to be doing all we can in this pivotal moment in history, or else we will not only fail future generations, but also our predecessors who fought, bled, and died for their rights.
The best way to fight P2025 is to vote blue, in all races. This means not just voting for Harris-Walz, but also for the local, state, senate, house, and other races. Make no mistake, our work is far from over if we win this election, but preventing Trump from getting into power, and voting out as many corrupt maga republicans from office as possible is the best action to take right now.
Please do not end up regretting that you didn’t do more. Get involved: Door canvassing, phonebanking, textbanking, donating, and of course, register to vote if you haven’t. Deadlines for state voter registrations are coming up. It’s never too late to get involved, but the best time to do it is now.
Go to iwillvote.com, register to vote if you haven’t, make a plan (will you vote early, by mail, or in person on Nov. 5th?), and make sure to frequently check that you STAY registered. Maga is pulling all kinds of dirty tricks right now to try and steal your vote when you aren’t looking. Your vote matters, and that terrifies Maga.
When historians who specialize in fascist history are sounding the alarm about what might happen in the immediate future, I think it’s about time to take these dangerous extremists very seriously, and then do something about it.
Tumblr media
Fascism is not inevitable. It is only so when you choose to give up.
With fear for our democracy, I dissent.
