like actually and genuinely I do think fried green tomatoes had a deep impact on my queerness as a child. I watched it when I was about 7 and at that age I was OBSESSED with male characters that acted like idgie: devoted, head over heels for a girl, the Big Hero with a little snark, the underdog. and it was the first time I saw a female character acting like that and towards another woman no less. I didn't really understand that they were gay yet, but I knew that I saw myself in idgie and that movie became so so special to me. and now as an adult and a butch... it's just always so comforting to rewatch

seeing non-black people critique rick's portrayal of black characters is interesting sometimes. only like 30% of the critiques I see make any sense to me to be honest
#ā€œrick made carter be an elvis presley fan that's fucked up!ā€ is a real thing I just read#do you think black people can't enjoy elvis even though he appropriated black culture for personal gain#boy you would not like what I have to tell you about eminem. or kpop. or anything else bc black culture has been#appropriated by like everyone forever. are black people not allowed to enjoy iggy or ariana or billie or [the list goes on]#I myself am not biracial but I /mostly/ like carter and sadie (specifically carter who isn't white-passing) as black representation#the part where carter feels indignant that he has to hold himself to a higher standard because the world is harsher on black boys#did genuinely resonate with me when I first read that part as a child and it still does to this day#can we talk about how rick knows nothing about black hair instead#or how hazel is from the jim crow era and seems to not have one single thought about race in the modern era#or hazel's horror over the amazons keeping slaves but ā€œno they're not slaves they just like it that way šŸ„°ā€#my problems with hazel are not at all about stereotypes I just don't buy her as an authentic portrayal of a black girl from the 1930s#don't get me started on beckendorf. does every black character need to die a violent horrible death rick#anyways this isn't intended to make anyone feel bad but we need more meaningful nuance in critiques beyond ā€œhey that's a stereotype! bad!ā€#if you can't discern and communicate WHY it's bad then you're not saying anything of substance#is it a caricature? is it uninformed/underresearched? are all the characters from that group being represented in that way?#is the stereotype itself a degradation of that group? is it being played for laughs? is the character a one-dimensional stereotype?#what can we glean about the biases of the author/narrative and their worldview through their portrayal of certain groups in the text?#a big part of literary analysis and critique is not only pointing out The Thing. you need to also say something about The Thing#like if you have a black character say they like hiphop then sure it's a ā€œstereotypeā€. but lots of black people do like hiphop#it's an important part of black american culture and portraying that in media isn't racist by default#and in fact lots of poc keep parts of themselves quiet for fear of being perceived as a ā€œstereotypeā€ when we shouldn't have to do that#BUT if you're doing it like jonah wizard was written in the 39 clues then that's where we've got a problem bc wtf was that rick#that was so racist oh my god I was like 11 years old reading that šŸ˜ and then he had the white mc poke fun at him for being a gangster#and him being a ā€œgangstaā€ was always played for laughs throughout the story#not being pro-rick here as I'm a big fan of critical riordan reading just being pro-thoughtful critiques because some of you guys actually#sound a wee bit ignorant when saying things like what was mentioned in the first tag#baye.txt#pjo hoo toa#rr crit#<- tagging that just for. well the tags basically

This is a special genre of f1 picture(to ME.)
#ive talked a lot about helmets lately oops#i guess i just rly have an obsession with how they're an extension of the driver#and a representation of them and their only sense of personality and individuality when theyre all geared up#so theres something to me about the separation of helmet from driver like in these pics#of course theres pics of the helmet on its own for model kinda pics(like all the pics i used for my past project posts)#but this is its own genre. helmet doing its own thing. helmet away from the vicinity of its owner#helmet being protected from the elements. it has its own carrying bag. it gets an umbrella. etc etc#the first pic made me on the lookout for pics w a similar vibe. IDK WHY BUT IM RLY OBSESSED WITH IT#having a severe helmet fucker era </3 i look at these and i feel very weird about them šŸ˜#not included cause its a differnt genre but also thinking abt pics where someone other than the driver themselves is holding their helmet#theres something weirdly intimate to me about it. its too reminiscent of that one painting of the germanic warrior holding the roman helmet#<- DO YOU GET WHAT IM IMPLYING HERE.#anyways. i digress. helmet being taken care of and protected is cute to me#its such an extension of the driver so its kinda funny ig that they get their own photoshoots#also yeah these are all nando helmets bcs i couldn't find pics from other drivers that i thought had the same vibe#and i think its interesting how these correlate with whom the photographer is and the level of popularity of the driver#like are you popular enough that someone will see your helmet apart from you and think its important enough for a pic?#and its so interesting comparing pics from the same time from different teams#bcs you can see how different the motivations of the different photographers are based on what the pics are like#well blah blah blah helmet kink blah blah blah#f1#formula 1#fernando alonso#helmet

Gonna make a list of queer characters that donā€™t outright state their queerness because a certain group of people complaining about the handling of a certain characterā€™s arc from a certain game is pissing me off
ā€œThey didnā€™t make her say she was trans so that means that theyā€™re giving us a ā€˜fuck youā€™/we need confirmation or it isnā€™t valid and transphobes will be transphobic/theyā€™re queerbaiting!ā€
Shut the fuck up
The fact that weā€™re even at this point is a miracle in itself and needing every character to explicitly say their orientation and/or gender identity shows how ignorant you are, not just regarding media literacy, but also on queer history
By your myopic lens youā€™re discrediting a lot of queer characters that didnā€™t and/or couldnā€™t outright say that theyā€™re queer
Characters shouldnā€™t have to outright say their orientation and/or gender identity for you to consider them ā€œgood repā€
That perspective is ridiculously narrow minded and downplays the importance of previous queer characters that helped pave the way to where we are now

I need to stop spamming my moots' dashes with the brothers sun so I will leave u with one last thought for the evening . I jus fuckin LOVE all the little details to asian and asian american life and culture. a lot of it is subtle enough that a viewer who wouldn't get it would completely gloss over it and not even know what they missed, while someone who knows would be like YEAAAAHHH ā€¼ļøā€¼ļø one of my favorite little references is in ep 5 when alexis goes to the store to get food and snacks for charles and what store brand does she have on her bags?? 99 ranch!!! I was like YUPPP YUUUUPPPPP when I saw that and it really wasn't important to the scene at all and never verbally mentioned but it was clearly visible in the shot, even if not the main focus. I'm filipino so I only caught some of the lil references and the overall themes n vibes, I can only imagine what it was like for mandarin and Cantonese speakers and Taiwanese people!

My favorite pastime: roleplaying characters and just making them soso weird and then pulling up the DSM-5 to try to diagnose them
#every time itā€™s like ā€˜did I invent a fake mental disorder or are these symptoms applicable to somethingā€™#unironically itā€™s been pretty helpful over the years in making me more aware of all the different kinds of mental illness and such out there#oftentimes Iā€™ll see someone say they have a disorder and Iā€™ll think ā€˜I remember researching that for my OCā€™ lol#HONESTLY roleplaying characters with certain issues has been SO helpful in keeping me open minded#and reassuring me that Iā€™m not a horrible person once I started to have more issues like intrusive thoughts#when my intrusive thoughts started to get bad I remembered ā€˜my oc has those and nobody blames him for itā€™ then suddenly I was better LOL#itā€™s so stupid I feel like ppl will say ā€˜that is NOT how you should be learning about this stuffā€™ but like idk itā€™s kinda been working#itā€™s like how representation is important except Iā€™m making the representation myselfā€¦? soā€¦ idk. but it inspires me to do research.#anyways Iā€™m currently stumped on one of my characters and how to diagnose him. Iā€™m beginning to think he perhaps experiences delusions.#but Iā€™ll have to do more research.#I havenā€™t even begun my research so Iā€™m sorry if Iā€™m totally wrong.#also Iā€™m aware many sources might be biased against certain illnesses and such. I already faced that problem searching NPD šŸ˜ I always take#the things I see in top results with a grain of salt. I know people will say ā€˜talk to ppl who have these disorders!ā€™ but like. how do I tell#them I want to try to diagnose a fictional character that I play. I mean I guess Iā€™m curious anyways? good to know about all this stuff even#without it being applicable to anything personal. but like. can u rlly just say ā€˜explain ur mental disorder to meā€™ šŸ˜

I try to stay out of discourse but i have to say something controversial. If youre genuinely upset because good omens 2 ruined your personal headcanons and feel the need to send neil gaiman asks to confirm or deny said headcanons, maybe log off idk. thats not a healthy way to interact with media or creators. And honestly no show is going to be your perfect ideal queer representation and complaining about perfectly fine representation because its not what you personally want is just awful

celebrity energyā‹†.ą³ƒąæ”*:ļ½„šŸ’…šŸ½
Tumblr media
so i got an ask about this a while ago and i wanted to make a post about it but i went on hiatus šŸ˜ so im making the post now. thank you to the anonie who asked the question that inspired this post and i hope you see this cuz it answers ur ask...šŸ’¬šŸŽ€
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE TRIPLE C'S ;
while making the notes for celebrity energy (the big C) and i was able to umbrella it to three main points. those points being confidence, cuntiness, and charisma.
confidence ; celebrities need to have undeniable confidence in themselves and their abilities. they're famous for a reason and they know that. work on ur self concept and watch ur confidence sky rocket.
cuntiness ; to be cunty is to be feminine and aware of urself. be cunty in the things that u do and the way that u handle urself. to be cunty is to find the perfect balance of inner strength and delicateness. cunt = refined.
charisma ; authenticity is the heart of charisma. be authentic and dont be afraid to take up space.
ALL ABOUT IMAGE ;
to have celebrity you need an image to put forward. this is where the power of social media comes in. your social media is like your brand. in this day and age social media is such a powerful tool not only for networking but also for getting u into places that u wanna get to.
in order to do that though u need to learn how to formulate ur own distinct image and advertise it expertly on social media.
PERSONAL BRAND AND REPUTATION ;
to further touch on those points ur social media IS your brand. this section kind of ties in with the next but im trying to distinguish between the two. so ur personal brand is what u do. so lets say ur rly SUPER smart and ur known for getting A's on like everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that is ur personal brand and that comes with a reputation that u may or may not feel obligated to uphold. but its important to uphold a reputation of some sort. with that being said be careful of what u post on ur social media because DIGITAL FOOTPRINT IS REAL. and when people look at ur social media they're seeing a representation of what ur putting out to the world so always be mindful.
WHATS UR SIGNATURE ;
you need something about yourself thatā€™s gonna set you apart. the way that you walk the way that you dress the way that you do ur makeup etc. decide what kind of energy u wanna serve, and SERVE IT. i choose to serve princess energy and i could write a whole separate post on that but find someone who serves that same energy so that u can learn from them.
remember, dont introduce urself as a vibe that u cannot maintain
but back to what we were talking about what is your SIGNATURE. what makes u or people think "yea thats so (insert ur name)" is the way that u talk or the way that u carry yourself. make sure to refine urself and be ur own distinct individual.
and dont be afraid to play around with signatures, ur allowed to have a few or one singular one, dont limit urself and keep trying until u can create the perfect one for youā€¦šŸ’¬šŸŽ€
while on the topic of signatures i wanna touch on STAR QUALITY. learn how to market urself not only as a person but as ur own brand. star quality is the perfect blend of (talent + training + confidence)
POLISH YOURSELF ;
refinement refinement refinement. u need to be studying yourself and you need to be able to see urself from other point of views. seeing urself from other point of views can be so refreshing and useful and it rly helps when ur trying to polish urself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
take impeccable care for urself and constantly show urself that u love urself. polish the way that u talk and the way that u carry yourself so that u can be exuding so much you-energy. its basically taking ur signature and the energy that u exude -> and refining it.
you have to create the energy before fame comes. if u wanna have celebrity energy u have to start getting comfortable with putting urself out there which leads me to my next point...šŸ’¬šŸŽ€
KILL CRINGE ;
when people call u cringe thats like them exposing their fear of being seen and analyzed by the world. they're upset because ur putting urself out there and they're insecure, but thats for them to fix within themselves. so dont take it personally when someone calls u cringe.
furthermore ur fear of being cringe is holding u back because ur always overthinking everything and u won't let urself do anything even if it'll help you because ur worried it might be cringe or ur worried what other people think so nip that in the bud and let urself live! u might have haters but dont let urself be ur own hater.
SOME MORE SOURCES ;
THE IMPORTANCE OF BRANDING

alright so re: my greg/pearl ā€œdiscourseā€ post, i need to say another thing. calling out biphobia is important, yes... but apparently, i really should have stressed more how non-canon this is. like. i keep seeing people on twitter being like ā€œwow, i had no idea pearl was canonically bi the whole timeā€ or similar sentiments, and iā€™m likeā€¦ no? sheā€™s not? not as far as we know?
guys. random crew doodles are notā€¦ canonā€¦ šŸ˜ thereā€™s crew art of young greg, rose and 13-year-old STEVEN hanging out. which is impossible for several reasons.
i have yet to see anyone react to those whatever doodles with this response of ā€œwowā€¦ this made me reconsider their relationshipā€¦ it really Makes You Think.ā€
if a new SU spinoff/sequel came out, and pearl was openly like ā€œi am bisexual and also in love with gregā€, sure. i would get why people would have feelings about that. THEN we could discourse about biphobia vs lesbian representation.
but thatā€¦ hasnā€™t happened. literally nothing canon-altering has occurred. at MOST, this was an earlier idea that got scrapped. that appears to be the story. but thatā€™s about it.
calling out biphobia is important... but facts also matter? this is a non-story. yet people are out here writing essays about how this is Reframing All of Canon. šŸ˜
Tumblr media
this is crew art! by hilary florido!
so again, i ask you: where are my discourse essays about how greg is secretly still in his 20s, his balding is a lie, rose is alive AND they're both hanging out with steven? in alone at sea, of all episodes?

Found out about you and your chaggie art on twt and decided to check out more of it on here! Iā€™ve heard about hazbins hotel before and have seen the pair and fanart of them but havenā€™t made the decision to watch the show.
Wanted to ask from your perspective, what is it about chaggie that you like? Could be anything about their relationship dynamics, wtv representation that they portray, anything! Should I watch hazbins hotel for them šŸ¤”
Gosh! What do I love about them??
Oh man, welll... On a surface level? The dynamics they display are just so delicious to me, and I especially love that it's always a little subverted with them, yunno? It's angelXdemon, but the demon is the precious sunshine while the angel is the grump with a body count. The princessXknight dynamic they display is subverted too because although Charlie is the one born in the worst realm in Creation, she's still the privileged princess, meanwhile even though Vaggie is the one who came from literal paradise, she's the one who lived a life that wasn't exactly luxurious. They just present dynamics I've already always loved but with a fun little twist.
But on a deeper level, I think I love Chaggie because they're already so far along in their relationship, and you can see it in how comfortable they are with each other, which was such a surprise for me. You see, I'm not very good at fixating on ships when they're already canon. Like, I'd think it's cute, but I wouldn't be itching to find fics about them. And if a ship I've liked finally gets together, I actually... usually... Kinda sorta love the ship a little less... I'd still like them! I just wont be as giddy about them.
But omg Chaggie still manages to give me butterflies, and I think it's because they're way past the honeymoon phase, something that I barely see represented for sapphic couples who are such important characters in a story. Lotsa people didnt like how it wasn't initially obvious that they were a couple, but I actually really loved how the writers and animators showed how deep their bond is without having them making out ang grope each other all the time. God if they were like that, it'd probably give me the ick.
It was just lowkey, because they've been together for years. Charlie would casually rest her arm on Vaggie's thigh and Vaggie isn't flustered because it's probably a habit of Charlie's by now. Vaggie would tuck Charlie's hair out of her face while she's worried about something and it isn't framed as a special thing, but you can tell by how Vaggie looks at Charlie that it wasn't done with any less love than it did over the years. And when Charlie's stressed about a phone call, Vaggie wordlessly offers her hand and Charlie takes it with a quick appreciative smile before holding on tight and bouncing their joined hands up and down like it's a stress reliever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their interactions weren't uber sweet with heated physicality, but the show had them display familiarity and comfort instead. And idk i just love that. I love that you can clearly tell they're best friends. Like, the very first scene they appear in for the Pilot, Vaggie is tying Charlie's bowtie for her while Charlie stares at her with a smile on her face. So cute...
Tumblr media
Also. I just think both of them are hot lmao
So. Do I think you should watch the show for Chaggie? Idrk. I personally watched for them, but I came into the show expecting not to get much shipping fuel bcuz they were already in a relationship in a show that has a whole dang lot more going on in it. So some people who wanted to get into the ship expecting maybe a lotta smooching felt unsatisfied. But honestly, what did they expect from a 8 ep season that only had a run time of 22 mins per episode, in a show that wasn't even a romance? šŸ˜ I personally thought we got a decent amount without taking away from the actual plot.
I think you should try to watch with the mindset of just having plain ol fun. Try the first 2 episodes, which is only 40 mins of your day. If it doesn't jive with you, that's totally fine. But pls do check out the songs if you dont like the show. The songs are so good. My favorite song from the season has plot stuff, but this one is my second favorite
youtube
And since we're talking about Chaggie, here's the reprise of that song sung by them. It's short, but they promised more chaggie songs will be in season 2 so im not too sad about it. Charlie and Vaggie's VA harmonizing is just beautiful.
youtube
Edit: for those who saw this post when i accidentally prematurely posted it before adding the links and photos, no you didn't šŸ˜

Can I ask why you hate Tim šŸ˜ Iā€™m genuinely curious im just getting into batfam lore and I see so many ppl hating on him
I donā€™t hate Tim as a characterā€”I used to love him. He was one of my favorite Robins for years because of how well-written and unique he was. But over the past 6-7 years, the writing has completely ruined him.
Tim started as the smartest Robin, someone who stood out because of his brains and determination. He wasnā€™t chosen to be Robin because of tragedy or by accidentā€”he earned it. He figured out Batman and Robinā€™s identities on his own, proving how intelligent and capable he was. He became Robin not because he needed Batman, but because Batman needed him. That dynamic made him special.
But now? Heā€™s gone from being the 'smartest Robin' to what DC themselves called the 'always-online bisexual.' Thatā€™s literally how they described him in their marketing, and it shows how little respect they have for his character. Instead of focusing on his intelligence, his strategic mind, or his growth as a hero, theyā€™ve reduced him to a walking label. His sexuality is the only thing they emphasize now, and thatā€™s not representationā€”thatā€™s lazy writing. Not to mention the arts sucks. The artists who make comics for him are coming straight out of Wattpad. Look at this shit:
Tumblr media
The art sucks. Now compare this trash to these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fucking beautiful. I can just look at it and be happy. Idk about others but it's obvious which one I'm going to buy.
And the change wasnā€™t organic. Tim was written as straight for 40 years. He had deep, meaningful relationships with female characters, especially Stephanie Brown. Their relationship was one of the healthiest and most developed in the Batfam. They supported each other, they had chemistry, and it felt natural. But then the writers threw it all away. His new relationship feels hollow and forced, like it only exists to make him a bisexual character.
Donā€™t get me wrongā€”representation is important. But when itā€™s done this way, it feels like a checkbox, not real development. A characterā€™s sexuality isnā€™t a personality trait or an arc. Tim was more than his sexuality before, but now it feels like thatā€™s all DC cares about.
Compare this to other Robins:
Dick Grayson (the first Robin):
Dick is the OG, but when he debuted, people didnā€™t take him seriously. Back then, he was seen as a sidekickā€”a kid in bright tights following Batman around. When DC aged him up and transitioned him into Nightwing, he became a leader, a symbol of independence, and the heart of the Batfamily. Now heā€™s beloved, but it took years for fans to respect him.
Jason Todd (the second Robin):
Jason was hated when he first replaced Dick. Fans thought he was just a cheap copyā€”another circus kid in a Robin costume. His personality rubbed people the wrong way, and the backlash was so bad that DC actually let fans vote to kill him off. But when Jason was brought back as Red Hood, his character was transformed. Heā€™s now a fan-favorite because of his anger, his moral complexity, and his strained relationship with Bruce. Fans went from hating him to loving him, but it took a lot of work to get there.
Damian Wayne (the current Robin):
Damian started as an arrogant, entitled brat. Fans found him unlikable, and many hated that he replaced Tim as Robin. But DC invested in his growth. Over time, Damian became more humble, learned to work with others, and developed his own unique dynamic with Bruce. Now, heā€™s seen as one of the most compelling Robins.
Tim, however, had the opposite journey. When he debuted, he was instantly loved. He wasnā€™t a tragic orphan or a rebellious anti-hero. He was just a smart, determined kid who figured out Batmanā€™s identity and stepped up because he believed Batman needed Robin. Fans loved that. His comics as Robin sold for yearsā€”something Dick and Jason never achieved when they were Robin.
But now? Tim has gone from being one of the most beloved Robins to a joke. DC doesnā€™t know what to do with him, so theyā€™ve reduced him to being the 'always-online bisexual' (their own words). His entire character now revolves around his sexuality. A characterā€™s sexuality isnā€™t character development. I only care about sexuality when it's comes to watching porn. Tim was so much more than that. He was the smartest Robin, the strategic genius who could outthink even Bruce. But now, that part of him is gone.
Heā€™s not Robin anymore, but he doesnā€™t have a clear role or identity. While Dick is Nightwing, Jason is Red Hood, and Damian is Robin, Tim is stuck in this weird limbo. DC hasnā€™t given him a meaningful arcā€”theyā€™re just writing him for the sake of saying, 'Look, we have a bisexual character.' And I as a bisexual person found it very offensive.
What makes this even worse is that Timā€™s been overshadowed by Damian. DC created Damian partly because they hated Tim, and now Damian has taken over everything that made Tim special. Heā€™s a tactical genius, a skilled fighter, and even looks like Tim now. I mean look:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If it wasn't for his girlfriend in these pictures and the art style I couldn't tell if it's Tim or Damian.
Tim deserved better. He lost most of his real fans and these days his fans are people who are into yaoi. He used to be one of the smartest, most relatable characters in the Batfam. But instead of building on that, DC has turned him into a caricature. Thatā€™s why Iā€™ve lost respect for how theyā€™ve handled himā€”not because of his sexuality, but because theyā€™ve erased everything that made him great and replaced it with shallow writing. He's just an extra now that is better dead. And if DC itself don't care about it's characters then why should I? We have enough good comics with good art for Dick, Jason and Damian that I don't even think about Tim anymore.

Finished my art book project for a class! Not the usual thing I knit, Iā€™ll admit, but Iā€™m so proud of how it turned out.
Tumblr media
First, the charting was fine but the actual duplicate stitching was a NIGHTMARE to get right. I had to rip out ל so many times šŸ˜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Making the scroll poles was a Learning Experience involving wood stain and super glue. Sewing on the canvas back was somehow the easiest part! Anyway, Iā€™m super pleased with the result and Iā€™m excited to present it to my class.
Skip the read more if youā€™re not interested in hearing about my artistic decisions :)
Part of this final assignment was to create something based on items in the library collection at my workplace. Thereā€™s a beautiful, giant 19th century Torah that Iā€™ve viewed several times and havenā€™t been able to forget the sheer comfort and awe of being able to sit down for an hour or two and just read the Torah.
But there are rules to interacting with a Torah (both Jewish and archival rules): do not touch the text. Do not touch the parchment. Do not unroll without assistance. No, we canā€™t repair the holes and whatnot in this manuscript because 1) sheā€™s super old and 2) we have no idea how to do it (which makes me sad!! She needs a good cleaning)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also got to view a teeny miniature Torah from the libraryā€™s EXTENSIVE miniature collection.
Tumblr media
So I decided I wanted to make a representation of the Torah that encouraged touch, and interacting with a text through another sense. This one only has the Shema stitched in it (funny, because no one is going to be reading this aloud to a congregation so no one is technically going to hear it). I made the first word blue in the Jewish manuscript illumination tradition, which wouldnā€™t illuminate just one letter, but rather the whole word, so as not to place one letter above another in importance. The blue is also reminiscent of tekhelet, a probably-blue dye mentioned in the Torah.
I also did not write out G-dā€™s name because Obviously Not. Iā€™m not an official scribe and I also donā€™t want smartass or ignorant goyim viewing my art book and going ā€œtehe I know how to pronounce thatā€ when they see the tetragrammaton and just. Saying the Name.
All this to say, Iā€™m so happy with my final project and I hope I get an A.

Why Spiderman-India/Pavitr Prabhakar is one of the best examples of Indian representation I've seen in a long time
Mumbattan
Lets talk about Earth-50101, Mumbattan, Pavitr's home dimension. Mumbattan is displayed as a beautiful, colorful dimension with lots of traffic, lots of people, and lots of culture. When we see Gwen, Miles and Pav swinging through Mumbattan, we see people wearing saris, people driving scootys, Indian-style billboards and even temples in the surroundings. This is an extremely accurate depiction of large Indian cities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mumbattan on the left, Mumbai on the right
See how similar these look?
Now compare this to how Hollywood's Slumdog Millionaire movie depicts India.
Tumblr media
Every single movie depicting India made by Hollywood portrays India as a country full of slums and dirty people. I have never seen Hollywood portray India as the beautiful, culture-filled country it is, and I have never seen one of the many beautiful temples, or the advanced cities represented in western media until now. Slumdog Millionaire is a fantastic movie, but India isn't only made up of slums.
Hollywood tends to romanticize struggle and when depicting India, makes it seem like a very depressing country. Yes, there are slums in India. Yes, there are people struggling in India. But that doesn't mean that India isn't beautiful. It doesn't mean India is behind. Mumbattan is the first depiction of India I've seen that I feel portrays the beauty and culture of India well. It is a fantastic representation.
2. Pavitr's personality
One of the most recent and most popular Indian representation series right now is the show, Never Have I Ever. In my opinion, this show is terrible. The main character, Devi Vishwakumar, is the stereotype of all stereotypes and doesn't accurately portray most Desi girls. She is rude, selfish, and extremely narcissistic. Her entire personality is being Indian and I find that extremely hard to watch. They make fun of her by addressing stereotypes like an excess of body hair, fashion, and even accents but instead of shutting down these stereotypes, they amplified them by making fun of them.
In western media, Indians are either portrayed as IT workers, scammers, grocery store owners, or nerdy, try-hard teenagers. Every show with an Indian teenager in it portrays them as cheap, unhygienic or unattractive which I, as an Indian, find extremely offensive.
Pavitr is portrayed as an optimistic Indian teenager who's smart and strong, without bragging about it, proud of being Indian without making it his whole personality and genuinely funny. He isn't portrayed as some skinny, nerdy guy with glasses. In fact, he's literally shown flexing his muscles, and performing well in class without going overboard about it. He's so full of culture, I can't even begin to explain it because I'll never stop. His suit, his mask, his webs, the way he moves, the way he fights, its all beautiful and I could watch for days on end without getting bored.
We were finally served an attractive, funny Indian character who isn't a walking stereotype, who loves and embraces his culture and just seems like an awesome guy to be around. Seeing him on screen made me feel so proud, of my religion and my culture. I hope Hollywood takes notes on this and continues providing the media with proper Indian representation and strong Indian role models for characters!
This article explains everything I said a little better, because I know my writing style can be confusing sometimes. It really goes into depth on how impactful it is on Indians to see this kind of representation for the first time in western media and how important this is.
