Biting off a bit more than I can chew today. I doubt I’ll be able to read them all, but checking them out is good for the library and it’s good for me. Plus I’m being optimistic, maybe something here can fix the burnout. (Neil Gaiman please save me) If not, I shall simply absorb the book magic via the osmosis of keeping them on my bedside table for the next two weeks. Library books are cool like that.

We as a society should talk more about the rougarou. Catholic guilt werewolves.... you feast instead of fast and thus your hunger becomes your fault. *You’ve* done this to your appetite, let it bloat with unclean food, let your eucharistic go from the Son’s body and blood to your brother’s. Your stomach is full but you’ll never be fulfilled again.
There is no word for ‘man’ in rougarou— not like in werewolf. The latter implies that its a transformation into a beast. The former says that you’ve been a dog from the start. Inner skin becoming outer skin. I think I’m dehydrated

one thing that did stand out to me while i was going back through cry for blood is how often we don't get to see helena's face.
it's a little thing, but there are so many panels -- especially when she's just received news of something, or is in emotional turmoil -- where she hides herself. she turns away, she bows her head. it's interesting, particularly because comics do so often show us those big dramatic facial expressions. but helena curls inward when upset. i think about these two panels a lot:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's a note from stephanie hans in the backmatter of an issue of die that i think of -- about how in comics, how much space something takes up indicates how important it is -- and yet, somehow, whenever some new information comes up, helena makes herself small, minimizes her own emotional displays.
now, given, she does hold herself in a very particular way as a default state. head tilted down, no eye contact, etc:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but that's exaggerated when she's upset. often, she even takes the pose of a prayer. like the specific thing i'm referring to is either sitting with her head bent toward her clasped hands as if she's praying, or turned away toward a window or mirror that frames her like an altar. like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there is, in fact, an entire page where we don't see her face. while she's recuperating after all of the drama of the first half of the arc, she won't look anyone in the eye at all. instead, the framing moves around her and shows her, bent forward and hidden, from different angles:
Tumblr media
i just think it's a nice little touch. a good display of who she is and how she responds to troubling situations, which makes perfect sense given what we learn about her during this arc. like, you know, if you're always at least somewhat at someone else's mercy -- be it batman, the other families, the people training her -- you'll want to minimize the outbursts and hide vulnerabilities, and she has a specific way of doing that. it often resembles prayer, because of course it does. she doesn't compare herself to a nun for nothing.
also, for a fun (?) bonus. this doesn't happen as often in the huntress costume… unless she's confronted with family. and then it creeps right back in:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway. helena bertinelli i care you.

I just got a bit more time in my schedule and I'm hoping to get started on a Sayers-and-Jews reading list, if anyone has any suggestions! I just really feel like I've never seen anyone talk about how WEIRD the apparent received wisdom is of "Sayers was in a relationship with a completely secular Jew who tried to convince her to have premarital sex she was religiously uncomfortable with, which NATURALLY made her start writing about Jews, but a totally different kind of basically fetishized ultra-conservative type than Cournos was." There are clearly missing links there- not an obvious or intuitive connection at all- and I have my own ideas of what they are and am so curious if it's already been written about.
#dorothy l sayers#lord peter wimsey#whose body#i think the main connecting factor is religious conservatism#and sayers displaying a kind of christian philosemitism that is genuinely fascinating#an idealization of jews as an almost purer throwback#backward and benighted (bc no jesus) but also in some ways uncorrupted by “modernity” for some reason#in terms of how she'd get it from cournos#he DID have some interesting ideas about jews and christians#(wrote an article about how jews should be more into jesus)#but my guess is that the christian philosemitism came first#and the connective tissue is her encountering a jew who didn't fit that kind of odd religious ideal of them#and then deciding to construct a bunch that do#idk#it's the only thing that makes sense to me#that scene in busman's honeymoon where peter asks the repo man what he thinks of christian home life and the repo man says “not much”...#imo that says a LOT#i should say that it can't be overstated how almost fetishistic and full of artistic license her portrayal of jews is#the jews she knew irl were largely secular so where did she get this nonsense#she has to have known that jews didn't do ARRANGED MARRIAGES FROM BIRTH like she depicts in piscatorial face of the stolen stomach#so like something is going on#to be clear#and this is part of what's weird#i don't mean “conservative” or “traditional” in a religious sense in the way that old fashioned caricatures often use#but instead conservative morally#which is if anything weirder and just makes it feel even more like sayers is juxtaposing some idealized morality and conservatism onto jews

by and large a lot of discourse can boil down to the fact that many of you simply don't like that other people who mildly annoy or inconvenience you exist in public.

7th Age Valinor Concept: devaluation of the Silmaril. Some brilliant baby or simply the combined effort of years of knowledge cracks the code on Silmaril technology and suddenly they can be made en masse. Because the Two Trees are dead and Varda isn’t handing out blessings anymore, the new Silmarils aren’t quite as stunning as the ogs, the same way mass produced tech is never as fancy as the prototypes. Less psychically devastating hope beam and more sexy SAD lamp. Those bright white beams they put on new cars. Every elf under 3000 has a hi wattage ultra diamond or three on them and their elders can’t decide if it’s horrifically disrespectful or so voiddamned funny.

Fallen
I saw an angel today
Ribcage splayed to the sky
Like a prayer borne of bone
Vestments of red velvet
Raiments of blissful decay
Its eyes stared unblinking
At the vaulted world above
While its kin gathered quietly
Taking parts of it with them
To return it to the blue
(This is about a bird carcass I saw on the sidewalk)

Night of the Demons 2 (Night of the Demons: Angela's Revenge, 1994)
"What's the problem here?"
"Oh, the old sexorcist here thinks I stole his precious little ghoulie book."
"Yeah, so?"
"So what would I want with a book?"
"Good point. Perry, Kurt doesn't have your book. He can barely read a clock."
#night of the demons 2#night of the demons: angela's revenge#horror imagery#gore tw#1994#brian trenchard smith#joe augustyn#james penzi#cristi harris#darin heames#bobby jacoby#merle kennedy#amelia kinkade#jennifer rhodes#johnny moran#rod mccary#rick peters#christine taylor#zoe trilling#ladd york#mark neely#slightly underwhelming sequel to a lightning in a bottle original. don't get me wrong‚ for a dtv cash in this is surprisingly well made and#i gotta give them props for bringing back Kinkade‚ far and away the best thing about the first film. but director Trenchard Smith (who#showed such inventiveness and commitment to fucked uppery in Turkey Shoot and Dead End Drive In) is really just going through the motions#and it all feels a little... hollow. there's some decent sequences and the fx are pretty ingenious for the most part but a film that#features an undead dude playing basketball with his own severed head should definitely be like.. 25% more fun than this is at least#i did like that they managed to shoehorn in another dance sequence for Angela but alas it simply isn't the zeitgeist moment that the first#one was (im serious‚ Angela's dance in NotD1 is like.. a Moment in 80s horror cinema). also this has a curious approach to the religious#element of the plot‚ staying largely critical and aloof until a third act swerve into reinforcing dogmatic superstition over the more#enlightened rationality displayed by a few characters (who naturally meet sticky ends). the hero is literally an abusive nun.. weird choice

DOES NO ELSE KNOW THAT VICTOR AND JEROME WERE ON GAME OF THRONES?!
That’s right, folks, Francis Magee aka Victor Rodenmaar Jr. was on Game of Thrones, he played Yoren in S1-S2, a brother of the Night’s Watch and a recruiter for them as well. He made easy friends with Tyrion Lannister, Robb and Ned Stark, and eventually Arya Stark. He got along with Tyrion due to the fact that unlike his comrades, Yoren had a sense of humor. Imagine Victor but cool. And later on *spoilers if you haven’t seen the show*
when Ned’s put in public for execution and Arya managed to escape the Lannister guards, he sees her in the crowd and nods his head to Yoren to try to get her to safety. He does. And he holds her close and shields her ears when her father is executed.
Tumblr media
Immediately after he cuts off Arya’s hair and instructs her to pretend to be a boy called Arry for her own safety whilst they travel back to the North. He planned on taking her to her brother Robb who became the current Lord of Winterfell following their father’s death.
Tumblr media
Yoren is also the one to give Arya the idea for her infamous ‘list’. Her own hit list of people she’s planning on killing which she recites every night before going to sleep. It becomes so important to her ritual that she can’t even sleep before reciting it completely.
and as for Eugene Simon aka Jerome Clarke? He played Lancel Lannister, a cousin of Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion Lannister for S1-2, and S5-6.
Tumblr media
He originally was just King Robert’s cup bearer and I think he was his squire? Can’t remember fully but I do know that whilst Jaime was out of King’s Landint, Lancel was the one keeping Cersei satisfied if you know what I mean. And yes, they’re cousins, and Cersei fucks her brother Jaime, this isn’t brand new or quite shocking, it’s pretty standard GoT. He’s even involved for killing the king as he kept supplying him with wine and alcohol during a hunt, a boar got to him and he couldn’t drunkenly defend himself.
Then he gets blackmailed by Tyrion for a bit S2 for fucking Cersei. Gets kicked back home too by the end I’m pretty sure. though we get to see him in armor for a bit:
Tumblr media
Then comes back on S5 looking like this:
Tumblr media
He becomes a very religious zealot as he believes he is ‘redeemed’ in the eyes of their gods, the Seven and he just gets very faith involved, even trying to ask Cersei, the Queen Mother, to absolve her sins by being honest about her incest with him (and her brother). She laughs him off very easily and even tries to use the other followers that the new Septon, the High Sparrow, has accumulated to her own gains by getting rid of her sons new wife, Margaery Tyrell, by having her brother Loras arrested for sleeping with men.
By S6 it gets progressively worse, not only did Cersei get what she wanted, her son’s wife, Margaery, gets taken away as well because she knew her brother was involved with men and ‘did not inform the church of these indiscretions’ so she has also sinned. But then Cersei gets a taste of her own medicine and she gets imprisoned too as Lancel has told the High Sparrow everything and he even gets this fucking carving on his forehead.
Tumblr media
Cersei gets her revenge in a big way if you’ve seen the show.
