I just got a bit more time in my schedule and I'm hoping to get started on a Sayers-and-Jews reading list, if anyone has any suggestions! I just really feel like I've never seen anyone talk about how WEIRD the apparent received wisdom is of "Sayers was in a relationship with a completely secular Jew who tried to convince her to have premarital sex she was religiously uncomfortable with, which NATURALLY made her start writing about Jews, but a totally different kind of basically fetishized ultra-conservative type than Cournos was." There are clearly missing links there- not an obvious or intuitive connection at all- and I have my own ideas of what they are and am so curious if it's already been written about.

As someone who is Jewish by ethnicity but not by religion, I don't have a lot of Jewish friends. I don't go to Synagogue because I follow a different religion (also I don't think there even is one around here), so where am I supposed to meet other Jews? What I do have is gentile friends who share my religion. You'd think that I'd meet a lot of antisemites that way, but surprisingly, I've met very few. I do have one friend from back in highschool who is a philosemite, she's normal until my heritage gets brought up, then it gets a little weird (like, love ya bestie, but I'm not a unicorn), but other than that, most people I've personally met are normal about Jews.

I was thinking back a to a bit over a year ago when I did encounter an antisemite on a Christian discord server (we have like close to a hundred ppl on that server btw, and only one of them was an antisemite). He started spewing the usual antisemitic conspiracy theories, the whole "jews control the government and economy" nonsense, and I was the first to see the post and called him out on it, and what I remember so clearly is that everyone was jumping to defend me from him. He wound up leaving the server for a while, and when he came back, he apologized to me. I haven't heard anything antisemitic from him since.

And there are so many people I know in person who I am confident would hide me if the time comes.

I guess I'm making this post as an encouragement, a reminder that there are good people out there. It may be hard to see them amidst all the horrible things that are happening in the world right now, and amidst all the insanity in the news, but they're there. The gentile friends who would protect you from the antisemites are out there. We're not as alone and surrounded as we think
