I keep having fun with the concept of hare Henry x) He's not a big hare, it's just a hare-sized forge hahaha (and the horseshoes are probably for hare-sized horses or pony)

I’ve been preparing for a Redwall-inspired ttrpg one shot and have done nothing but think about cozy little woodland critters and their silly little adventures.

Canadian Cartoons Are Great
Tumblr media
Today, the popular cartoon YouTuber Saberspark uploaded a video talking about the infamous “fart episode” of the 2023 Total Drama series. The comments were filled with hatred and generalizations towards Canadian animation. These terrible comments are not the fault of Saberspark, but it is true that the “big users” in the cartoon community are (mostly) Americans who spread myths and stereotypes about Canadian cartoons. This has bothered me and a few others for quite a while, so here, I’m going to prove why Canadian animation is great, actually, and dispel common misconceptions
All Canadian cartoons are about fart jokes - if you say stuff like this, you clearly have never seen a Canadian cartoon outside of Total Drama and Johnny Test. That’s like if I said “all anime is naughty tentacles” or “all American cartoons are about anvils falling on your head.” And don’t act like your precious USA cartoons and anime are exempt from toilet humor. One example of an anime with toilet humor is Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - their first episode was about a monster made out of shit. And we all know about the gross out cartoons such as Ren and Stimpy.
Canadian cartoons are cheaply mass-produced because of CanCon - No. What CanCon ACTUALLY states is that a certain percentage of content on a Canadian channel has to be Canadian-made. The policy is about supporting Canadian art, not “mass-producing” cartoons, since this applies to ALL Canadian TV and radio content, animated or otherwise.
Now, let me tell you some reasons why Canadian animation is actually great
Some of your childhood shows, such as Arthur, Franklin, and Little Bear are Canadian in origin.
Some of the most acclaimed cartoons within the cartoon community, such as Ed Edd n Eddy and MLP:FIM, were both animated in Canada and had voice actors from there (same talent pool, in fact - Vancouver)
Inspector Gadget and the Beetlejuice animated series helped keep good animation afloat during the 80s. In a decade full of uninspired and insipid cartoons, these were two of the highlights.
Canada is still a great place to outsource animation, as proven with the works of Nelvana, Mercury Filmworks, Jam Filled, and countless others.
If you grew up without cable, you probably watched PBS Kids and/or Qubo a lot. Guess what - lots of the shows on both of those channels were Canadian. For example: the PBS Kids Bookworm Bunch: Timothy Goes to School, Seven Little Monsters, Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse - these shows are all Canadian! Qubo was also home to Jane and the Dragon, Jacob Two Two, Babar, Spliced, etc - they’re all Canadian too.
Because Canada’s censors are far more lax compared to American ones, Canada has made huge strides in teen and adult animation. Such shows include Total Drama, 6teen, Detentionaire, Undergrads, Producing Parker, etc as well as the movie Heavy Metal.
Also because of the lax censors, Canadian cartoons had positive LGBTQ representation far before the United States did. One episode of 6teen has a character stating “I’m gay,” and in Braceface, the main character assists her gay friend in finding a boyfriend. Unsurprisingly, these episodes never aired in the US.
6teen also dealt with periods before Turning Red, Baymax, and Molly McGee did it (again, the episode was banned in the US).
Finally, here are a few Canadian cartoons I recommend, and where to watch them:
Cybersix (it was a Canadian and Japanese co-production). The whole thing is on TMS’ YouTube channel.
Redwall is on Pluto, and there are episodes of it on YouTube courtesy of Treehouse Direct
Toad Patrol (unfortunately you’re gonna have to resort to low quality YouTube uploads)
Silverwing - again, the complete series is on YouTube
Detentionaire- On Tubi and Pluto!
Ruby Gloom is a great show if you like cute gothic stuff; it too is on Tubi and Pluto
The Adventures of Sam and Max: Freelance Police - on Tubi
One of my favorites, The Raccoons. Basically the Canadian equivalent to The Simpsons, and with a banger ending song. The show’s production company has uploaded episodes of it for free on YouTube.
The original Clone High was animated by the legendary Nelvana (if you’re wondering, the new season is not outsourced to Canada 😔) It is on Paramount Plus and HBO Max
Undergrads - yet again on YouTube, in low quality unfortunately. Like Clone High, it was on MTV.
I also recommend watching some short films from the National Film Board of Canada. My personal favorite is the Log Driver’s Waltz.
Tl;dr - American cartoons are not bad because of Allen Gregory, anime is not bad because of Pupa, and Canadian cartoons are not bad because of Johnny Test or fart jokes.

What small(ish) animal would Tucker be?
I got hit with a surprise interest in Redwall, and now I'm trying to decide what animals various Danny Phantom characters would be.
So far I've got Danny and Sam. Danny being a badger (of course) and Sam being a bat (of course).
Tucker however... I can't decide. I kind of want him to be a vermin of some sort (rat, ferret, weasel, fox, etc.) to subvert the usual formula of "good" and "bad" species. But any vermin species doesn't seem to fit him, or makes him seem plain next to a badger and a bat.
Could also just make Tucker into an animal not found in the UK as Redwall animals typically are.

Me reading High Rulain for the first time: Wow! There sure are a lot of parallels to Mossflower! I wonder if, like Gingivere, Jeefa will be the moral better compared to his brother Pitru. Can't wait to see how his character develops!

Update on my reading of Redwall for those who care:
1: This is for children?!? (Again)
2: Heavy religious themes, not surprising at all
3: For real though, I love how it's idealistic and simple with it's ideas, but it's also mature and does not act like it's readers are dumb babies, it does NOT shy away from death and violence, and tackles heavy topics with grace.
4: Very Medieval-Shakespearean vibes, old fantasies of knights and heroes and stuff
5: Book one was a light read, can't wait to start book (2)
6: Would love to see a Gijinka of these characters
7: I don't think humans are going to make an appearance at any point but I'm curious on where they are

reading slump novel 1: early redwall novel. reading slump novel 2: deeply horny romance newly off my library holds. reading slump novel 3: redwall again. anyway: I have some questions about childrearing structures and abbey vows—
where do the abbey children (dibbuns) come from? If I remember right at least some of them are orphans but the abbey isn’t specifically mentioned as being an orphanage and there are apparently a lot of these kids (though with how dangerous the world of redwall is I guess that many orphans would still be believable)
relatedly, the brothers and sisters of the abbey are apparently unpartnered and raising these kids together. is this like a Shaker situation where these are their kids from their former lives that they give up sole claim to and raise in the community? for that matter, do these brothers and sisters take a vow of celibacy at all or do they just take a vow to give up family life in order to care for the community? i have trouble seeing how you’d get an idea of sexual sin out of a belief system structured on hospitality, ancestor worship, and living in harmony with the seasons, which I think you’d need to come up with a justification for celibacy. maybe it’s more like The Dispossessed than Shakers—like you’re allowed to have kids you just can’t keep them to yourself

Rules: make a poll with five of your all-time favorite characters and then tag five people to do the same, see which character is everyone’s favorite.
tagging: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ @wolvesinstarryskies, @oheyfox, @obae-me, @devildomditzy, and anyone who's interested
Edit: I probably should have thrown in Sung Jinwoo or Woo Jinchul but those two are super recent oh well

which character who has canonically died would you most like to codemn to live?
Hi <333 OOOH okay so full disclosure when I was reading that post I was mostly thinking about stories I already like - so, like, there's the near-death stories, which I'm forever obsessed with - Dick trying to do noble self-sacrifice post-Blockbuster, and Tim trying the same thing in Red Robin, and both of them ending up inconveniently alive afterward.
And also, a bit more directly, the Lotus Pier story starts with the protagonist DRAMATICALLY DYING IN NOBLE SELF-SACRIFICE --- aaaaand then getting brought back to life over a decade later. And VERY INCONVENIENTLY it turns out all of the people that our hero was obsessively avoiding having honest emotional conversations with?? They are all still around!! And all those relationships are all still unresolved!! Anyway naturally our hero does his level best to pretend he has NOT come back to life, but fortunately/unfortunately they figure him out after a while.
(He still manages to duck out of some emotional resolutions, because he is the most instinctively evasive man In The World, but that is what fanfic is for.)
THAT SAID IF I LIMIT IT TO CANON COMICS DEATHS FOR CHARACTERS WHO DO NOT COME BACK TO LIFE --
Mostly villains I think?? Like, this isn't really relevant to the earlier post, because that was about self-sacrifice, but right now I'm just thinking about the vibes of "I would like to condemn you to live." And that's usually villains!!
If there's a villain who isn't intended to be especially sympathetic but then is kinda sympathetic in ways that are never fully explored, I am always, like, what if they lived though. Not necessarily in the canon stories, but in fanfic sdfdsfs
So for comics: Tara Markov.

9 Fandom Folks to Get to Know Better
Tagged by the lovely @charmwasjess! *squees* awww thank you friend :)
3 Ships I Like: Ohhh, hard choice! So many blorbos, so many potential pairings...but if I must make a choice? Probably Fox/Jon Antilles, Jaster Mereel/Feemor and Rex/Ferus Olin. But I’d be perfectly happy with any combinations of the above. Clones and/or Mandalorians/Jedi is my jam!
First Ship Ever: Definitely Hawkgirl/Green Lantern back in ye ole Justice League Animated days. I was OBSESSED with Hawkgirl – her powers, her tom-boyish personality, the hawk symbolism. If I could re-design her costume and switch the mace for a sword she’d be perfect! And yes I wrote Hawkgirl/Green Lantern as one of my first fanfics. Starcrossed shattered my heart into a thousand pieces but oh I love it so!
Last Song You Heard:  Within Temptation’s Shed My Skin. I love her voice, love the instrumentals and the lyrics vibe with me.
Favorite Childhood Book: Ha! Redwall buddies! It was the firstseries I really got into. My sister did also and got competitive with me about who could read them faster. I can still recite the soup song from Legend of Luke. I am however salty that the few sword-wielding female characters (and also objectively the most interesting ones) Jacques denigrated to write were all side characters! *Sigh*
Why are mainstream creators allergic to sword-ladies?
Currently Reading: The Islands of Sina Una! It’s a 3rd party sourcebook for D&D 5e heavily inspired by the creators’ Filipino culture – precolonial of course – and even goes into detail about how said culture was translated into an RPG book. The world-building is rich and fresh in an RPG that's beating the undead horse of (stereotyped) medieval Europe. It’s got something for everyone – classes, Deities, treasure, environment, potential campaign hooks, creatures,, subclasses, spells, beings, magic items and of course Lore. The choices also fill in some holes left open by most D&D books – the setting itself on seven islands instead of land (stereotypical) or ‘ye obligatory aquatic adventure’. Want a necromancer-flavored rogue, an intelligence-based divine caster, volcanic Dwarves? Here you go!
if you like d&d I would HIGHLY recommend!
Currently Watching: I need to finish watching the OT Star Wars trilogy but the amazing @beskad streamed Skeleton Crew and it’s so good! The characters are fantastic and incredibly realistic, it’s a great mix of humor, heartwarming and heart-wrenching. It plays around with a lot of usual Star Wars tropes so even veterans are left surprised by what happens next. It’s villain is compelling and unique and may give you a bad case of obsession.
Currently Consuming: Cornbread my dad made with sour cream instead of butter in it. Definitely a good choice.
Currently Craving: Maybe Chai? Not really into the cravings right now because I’ve managed to scratch that ‘good, fast and cheap pizza’ craving and my sushi craving by gorging myself on both (two different days)
No pressure tagging: @panther-os, @beskad, @s-c-g-s-c-g, @amarcia, @shinobicyrus, @thejakeformerlyknownasprince, @ankahikoibaat, @dragonciphering, @gallusrostromegalus
