"My name is ChiaraSole Ciavatta @chiarasolems. I suffered from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating (other eating disorders), depression and other forms of addiction for over 14 years.
I've been on different courses of treatment and hospitalized several times. I was in a coma and attempted suicide.
For over 14 years, I've swung several times from 36 kilos to 90 kilos. I've been cured for about 20 years.
In 2001 I started my voluntary work: the site is chiarasole.com. I studied as a social worker. I wrote an autobiographical book and, in 2004, I founded the association MondoSole specialized in eating disorders.
MondoSole is also a treatment and rehabilitation center in Rimini (Italy) that welcomes people from all over Italy and also from abroad."
In 2008 I received the Milanodonna 2008 award for the social communication category.
On February 2, 2018, my husband, Matteo Mugnani, passed away after three long and exhausting years of a rare form of blood cancer.
My mottos are "always believe in it", "never surrender" and "full speed ahead".

🌿 Empowering Health Transformations with Functional Medicine 🌿 Functional medicine offers a beacon of hope by addressing disease root causes with personalized care. Here are three inspiring stories showcasing its transformative power: Anna’s Victory Over Chronic Fatigue: After years of unyielding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and no relief from standard treatments, Anna found success with functional medicine. Discovering her condition stemmed from gut imbalances and nutritional deficits, she embarked on a journey of dietary adjustments, supplements, and stress management. Within six months, Anna reclaimed her energy and life. David’s Triumph Against Type 2 Diabetes: David, diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, was determined to avoid a life on medication. Functional medicine uncovered the significant impacts of diet, lifestyle, and stress on his condition. Embracing a whole-food, low-glycemic diet and regular exercise led to normalized blood sugar levels and reduced medication within a year. Sarah’s Healing from Thyroid Dysfunction: Sarah struggled with hypothyroidism, leading to fatigue, depression, and weight gain. Conventional approaches fell short, so she turned to functional medicine. An in-depth analysis revealed iodine deficiency and exposure to harmful chemicals as key culprits. A personalized plan including nutritional support and lifestyle changes soon improved her thyroid function, energy, and mood. These stories from Anna, David, and Sarah illustrate the profound impact functional medicine can have, offering a path to genuine healing by focusing on each individual’s unique health history and needs. Life goes on
Things I have felt in the last week that a year ago I thought I would never experience:
- The anxiety of my first shift at a new job
- The horror at seeing the bill at a restaurant
- The overwhelming feeling of having lots of people congratulate me
- The short-lived shame of minor mistakes that disappears the next day
- The excitement of having people want to date me
- The stress of setting up an art society at university
- The nonchalance of having assignments to hand in but wanting to have fun instead
- The pride of receiving positive feedback from lecturers
- The realisation that I've missed a mental health appointment and wasn't thinking about it for days
- The annoyance at not having enough breaks to eat the food I brought with me

Recovery diary
I have decided to write about my recovery here, both to keep myself accountable and one day to see where I have come from. Hopefully, this may also help someone else... who knows. I don't intend to mention numbers because they can be triggering, but I will talk about body image issues a lot because this is my main obstacle in recovery.
For the past few days I have been doing quite well. I have had good body image days and neutral ones. Eating doesn't feel as hard even if I still overthink everything. The only thing that keeps me from full physical health is my period, which I have no idea if it will come on its own once I stop hormonal therapy, but I hope it will.
Recovery is valid for everyone. If you are struggling with food you deserve recovery and you are as valid as everyone else.

Deb Burgard says it! Disordered eating is NOT an issue of body size, and we can't prescribe diets to people in larger bodies while diagnosing restrictive eating in people in smaller bodies as a symptom of a mental illness. It's time to get weight stigma out of the medical community and treat ALL patients of all sizes with equal respect! . . #haes #intuitiveeating #edrecovery #antidiet#riotsnotdiets #effyourbeautystandards#losehatenotweight #nourishnotpunish#recoverywarriors #balancednotclean #foodisfuel#prorecovery #bodyposi #bodypositive #bopo#realrecovery #allfoodsfit #intuitiveliving #selflove#nutrition #dietitian #healthateverysize#nutritiontherapy #virtualcounseling #RD2be #rdsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B0O6fGxFfnE/?igshid=1kb2ag3gaf7kz

Is it about the food??
Extremes pop up in so many areas of eating disorder recovery. One that I’ve been contemplating recently is the idea that it is either “not about the food” or so much emphasis put on the food itself that we negate other essential aspects of the recovery process. I think there is a ton of gray area within food being our medicine and not the real issue. I also think that we have to account for each individual having a different experience and therefore needing varying amounts of healing in specific areas.
One thing that makes ED recovery so challenging is that it is very much a whole person illness. It is physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. So yes, we need to nourish our bodies and of course, food is vitally essential to this processes. We simply cannot recover without it. But I think most of us will find the need to also do some deep inward healing in order to reach a firm state of recovery. This is why it is dangerous to prescribe a one size fits all approach. There are some universal truths that experts have noted in terms of eating disorder recovery but all of us have unique experiences with what works and what does not work.
I encourage you to explore what works best for YOU, not getting too caught up in what others are doing on social media. A big thing for me in my own process has been curiosity. I don’t just assume something will or will not work for me until I try it and see what happens with the help of my team. If it seems to have benefited me, I continue it. If not, I tell myself “that was good for someone else but it wasn’t good for me.” And I let it go.
Anyway, this is turning into a bit of a ramble but the point is that I encourage you to approach your recovery with curiosity. Discovery all the area’s of gray within the healing process. Keep in mind that feeding your body is so incredibly important but the food is not likely the only thing that needs to be addressed.

Gentle reminder that interventions come when you're in danger of being consumed by an issue that you can no longer even see. I'm not judging when I give this reminder. I've been through enough interventions and now have had to give enough of them as a doctor that I just know that ☀️you are never going to feel like you need the intervention when it happens. That's the entire point.☀️ That type of shock / denial / anger is actually a sign that you need one. So when it comes, you just have to trust. You don't 👏have 👏to 👏agree👏 that it's the right thing in order to do it anyway. You don't have to agree that it's the right thing for it to work. You don't have to think you need treatment for it to help you. You just have to do what your family and friends and health professionals are asking you to do. If you do, you'll live. LATER, you'll know it was the right thing. I'm here for you if you need help❤️ #recovery #naturalrecovery #naturopathic #truerecovery #addiction #addictionrecovery #recoverylife #12stepstorecovery #12steps #12step #realrecovery #naturopathicmedicine #functionalmedicine #addict #addictionmedicine #intervention #interventions #chronicillness #chronicpain #painmeds #naturalnutrition #naturalpainrelief #help #orthomolecular #orthomolecularpsychiatry #naturalpsychiatry #functionalpsychiatry #naturaladdictionhelp (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMXTIbJAefY/?igshid=1va42y6ldldq9

Little update on my life and recovery...
Its been a weird few months. Private therapy is super difficult but I'm being as honest as I can be and taking onboard her responses, suggestions and reflections.
After being on sick leave for 2 months, I realised it was unlikely I would feel able to go back into work with the triggers I would have to face multiple times a day, so I resigned. I had an interview for a private SEN Nanny role, had 3 interviews but didn't get the job. Right now I'm just trying to keep myself well and safe, enjoy as much of summer in London as I can, even if that means using my savings on rent and food!
I've spoken to my GP and she is slightly concerned with a couple of things including weightless and drinking. Physically, I'm still a healthy weight and don't have any physical effects of drinking, its more them both being symptoms of not great mental health. I was referred to the CMHT in June, who contacted me this month saying they won't see me because I'm drinking too much. Not sure how I feel about that, I agreed to see an alcohol and drugs worker who has now cancelled 3 times. Guess I won't be seeing a psychiatrist to review my meds or diagnoses anytime soon!
Generally, I'm in a much MUCH better place than I spent so long in, but some things are creeping back in/resurfacing, possibly due to therapy as well as the assault I experienced a few months ago.
Hope everyone is doing well, always here for a chat or to answer any questions!
PS: Here's a photo I took on a really old beautiful camera which I've been borrowing for a few weeks...

Seriously, the research is all there! There are ZERO dietary plans out there that show long-term, sustainable weight loss, even for those who follow the plan to a T. And did you know that not only are you 95-97% likely to regain the weight, but of that percentage, 2/3 of folks will actually regain more weight than they initially lost! Yup, the data is that abyssmal. So if diets don't work, then what does? Intuitive eating and a Health at Every Size approach to supporting your wellbeing <3 Thanks to @feelgoodeating for the quote used in this image! . . . #haes #intuitiveeating #edrecovery #antidiet#riotsnotdiets #effyourbeautystandards #losehatenotweight #nourishnotpunish#recoverywarriors #balancednotclean #foodisfuel#prorecovery #bodyposi #bodypositive #bopo#realrecovery #allfoodsfit #intuitiveliving #selflove#nutrition #dietitian #healthateverysize#nutritiontherapy #virtualcounseling #RD2be #rd #newyearsresolution https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsk-mlalydL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8f1it1vmrt7d

In case you didn't know, May is mental health awareness month. 💜 1 in 5 adults in the US lives with a mental health condition 💜1 in 25 adults in the US lives with a serious mental illness. One way to decrease stigma is to be informed. #maymentalhealthawarenessmonth is important because a lot of times, people start to heal the moment they start to be heard. ~One way I like to connect with others is through my art. Like most, I like to do art to express the things I can't articulate in words. Here's a piece i painted, for a series, that represents the monsters in my head. This one *shown above* represents my anxiety. Try to focus on the bigger picture. In recovery, there is so much more which counts as an indicator of health and progress other than your height to weight ratio.
