Republicans are, predictably, making up conspiracy theories and spreading lies to try to benefit from the tragedy. They are assigning blame, not based on any facts, but entirely based on who they want to blame.

However, the facts show that the shooter was not any of the Republicans' typical scapegoats.

He was one of their own, using an AR-15 style assault rifle — the exact type of killing machine Republicans adore and can't seem to live without.

If you want to assign blame, blame the Republican gun-loving shooter.

Biden reportedly tried to reach out to Trump after the shooting.

Considering that Trump tried to carry out a coup to prevent Biden's inauguration, has pushed to have his son thrown in prison, and openly intends to have Biden prosecuted if he wins, that demonstrates an extraordinary level of magnanimity, humility, and willingness to put the duties of the Presidency first.

seeing a lot of people saying stuff along the lines of "if it were me, I wouldn't have missed" and "he should have died" and other similar sentiments.

you guys do realize that like. these kinds of statements are just gonna make the republicans hate us MORE, right? they already have the whole "they're trying to destroy America, it's us against them" mentality and implying that someone shoulddie because they support something you don't (even if that something is a complete and total removal of civil rights-). the only thing that will come out of saying shit like "I wouldn't have missed" is that the MAGA freaks are just gonna go "SEE!? THEY'RE TRYING TO DESTROY US, SO WE NEED TO DESTROY THEM FIRST!" he's going to end up as a martyr for these people.

I hate trump as much as any of you do, if not more so. do I believe he deserves to rot in prison for the rest of his life because of his crimes? abso-fuckin-lutely. do I believe he should be murdered? NO.

not to mention, someone who was not trump DIED. it doesn't matter if they supported trump (because I know some of y'allwill try to excuse their death as "unimportant" or "for the best" or "what they deserved"), they were an innocent rally attendee who was KILLED in an assassination attempt.

some of you people need to stop hating this shitty guy for long enough to go "wow, a mass shooting is inherently bad, and so is attempted murder."

I wouldn't say there is anything funny about this, but that would be the least damaging outcome (although I don't believe its the case). The least easy to use for propaganda/incitement.

MAGA would still insist on their conspiracy theories of course, but it might take the temperature down a bit.

the funniest possible version of this story is that a fight broke out between audience members over something completely unrelated and Trump caught a stray so I'm going to believe that until the Secret Service officially states otherwise

In all honesty, I kind of predicted this outcome a few weeks ago, so it’s hard to really feel that disappointment and despair I felt in 2016.

Today is a lesson in the immoral stupidity of thinking our political crises can be solved by a man with a gun.

The shooter at Trump's rally did nothing but get himself killed, kill another random person in the crowd and injure a third, and likely give Trump a huge propaganda boost.

If he'd killed Trump, meanwhile, he'd have given the fascists a martyr, and there'd still have been plenty of fascists to pick up where Trump left off.

Systemic problems require widespread, deep-rooted, long-term work to address- not angry fools thinking violence is a shortcut to change.

Plus, I honestly don't want Trump dead. I want him brought to justice. Had that bullet been two inches to the left, and Trump died on that stage, I would have felt regret that he had not been defeated by democracy and law, but that even his fall was a victory for the lawless violence he champions.
