Using scented products indoors changes the chemistry of the air, producing as much air pollution as car exhaust does outside, according to a new study. Researchers say that breathing in these nanosized particles could have serious health implications. When you hear or see the words ‘air pollution,’ you most likely think of things like factories and car exhaust. That’s pollution that is out there – outside your house. But have you thought about how you’re contributing to air pollution inside of where you live by using seemingly innocuous products like scented, non-combustible candles? New research by Purdue University, the latest in a series of Purdue-led studies, examined how scented products – in this case, flame-free candles – are a significant source of nanosized particles small enough to get deep into your lungs, posing a potential risk to respiratory health

Researchers trap atoms, force them to serve as photonic transistors
Researchers at Purdue University have trapped alkali atoms (cesium) on an integrated photonic circuit, which behaves like a transistor for photons (the smallest energy unit of light) similar to electronic transistors. These trapped atoms demonstrate the potential to build a quantum network based on cold-atom integrated nanophotonic circuits. The team, led by Chen-Lung Hung, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the Purdue University College of Science, has published their discovery in Physical Review X. "We developed a technique to use lasers to cool and tightly trap atoms on an integrated nanophotonic circuit, where light propagates in a small photonic 'wire,' or more precisely, a waveguide that is more than 200 times thinner than a human hair," explains Hung, who is also a member of the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute.

Many thanks to Arne Flaten, Kirstin Marie Gotway and Purdue University for inviting me to exhibit my political artwork and speak to students, faculty and the public along with professors Anish Vanaik and Dwaine Jengelley! Sue and I really enjoyed touring the campus and art department and seeing the newly displayed collection of Degas sculptures. Many thanks also to Peter Moore, who created a special edition print on letterpress for the event. The town of Lafayette was picturesque and aglow with fall color. We are grateful for being so generously hosted!

Purdue University podcast
Actor Stephen McKinley Henderson on working with Austin Butler on Dune: Part 2:
"What I had the most fun with this last time was working with Austin Butler, who played Elvis recently..."
"What a nice person. He’s just the nicest guy and he and Timmy both just wonderful people and they play such nemesis in the film, so it was wonderful to see them off camera."
"Austin was so nice to me ’cause I had a medical emergency during the shooting.....and when I came back..... he played a character that was not very happy with me at all, and he was quite chilling, and I was giving him back the looks...."
"But when they say, “Cut,” he would come over and say, “Mr. Henderson, are you okay? Can I help you? Can I get you anything?” And he was just so nice. And then we’d go back to roll and he went, “Ugh.” He was on my case."
"I just so appreciated Austin, a wonderful, wonderful person."

This is so sweet 🥺❤️ Everyone always says he's the sweetest guy.... 🥰

A new milestone has been set for levitated optomechanics as Prof. Tongcang Li's group observed the Berry phase of electron spins in nano-sized diamonds levitated in vacuum. Physicists at Purdue are throwing the world's smallest disco party. The disco ball itself is a fluorescent nanodiamond, which they have levitated and spun at incredibly high speeds. The fluorescent diamond emits and scatters multicolor lights in different directions as it rotates. The party continues as they study the effects of fast rotation on the spin qubits within their system and are able to observe the Berry phase. The team, led by Tongcang Li, professor of Physics and Astronomy and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, published their results in Nature Communications. Reviewers of the publication described this work as "arguably a groundbreaking moment for the study of rotating quantum systems and levitodynamics" and "a new milestone for the levitated optomechanics community."

FDA Partners With Purdue University to Study Salmonella Risks
FDA has partnered with Purdue University and Indiana produce industry stakeholders to launch an environmental microbiology study to better understand the ecology of human pathogens, focusing on assessing risks related to Salmonella in the environment. The study is intended to develop a better understanding of the source of pathogens, their persistence, and how they transfer through the growing…
