Happy Stricklake Month, everyone!

Glad to be back. It has been a difficult year so far. Here's hoping this month's prompts help me get back on the writing horse so I can crack down on finishing my WIPs.

Summary for Utopia/Dystopia: The Trollhunter—an ill-fitting changeling—, now trapped in the Darklands, snared and brought before Gunmar The Vicious, is accursed to the same rock cage, the same stone quarry, the same endless bloodbath, the same scorching glare, the same sun-less verdict, the same viceral nature as he had once been forged in all those centuries ago. ...Well...almost the same.

I've been waiting around for August since the first time I saw stricklake month was a thing last year (which was coincidentally very recent into my re-obsession with the show and Strickler and Barbara in particular) so to say I'm excited to participate this year is an understatement.

I may be going overboard in a lot of places. But it's fineeeee

I'm going to try to do all four prompts (I'm undecided if I'll do both art AND writing for each but be sure I'll at least do one of the two for any given week it's the curse of being both a writer and artist, I must bear it) so here's week 1's prompt in writing form! Utopia/Dystopia! Because I didn't realize you needed to pick one! And not both! But I technically did more Utopia so!

Week one of keenswimmers2023

Prompt: Dystopia/Utopia.

I personally decided to do Dystopia and I know I am late but I can explain-

No actually I can't...dosen't matter, It's there.

I uhm decided to do a world were Gunmar broke free in season one and actually killed Jim. Strickler obviously was shocked but we all know that season one him is a ...well...kind of a dick, wich means he "got over it"...until he realized how fucked up this actually is.

He did keep his promise tho, he protects Barbara. He eventually tells her that he is a changeling but he bends the truth how he needs it to be. Strickler leaves Gunmar after finding out that he will kill every human and he decided (after veeeeery looooong thoughts) that Barbara is more worth than his selfish plans.

Barb would eventually find out the truth after Strickler left Gunmar for her and he tries to survive or at least he is trying to keep her alive. Barb can't forgive him. She won’t forgive him.

How does it end...? They both probably die...

...

Ohhh and did Strickler broke off one of his horns? Yes he did. Wanna know how? Gunmar did it after Strickler refused to tell him were he hides Barbara.

Barb's scars are easier to see but Walt tends to jump infront of her. He fights for her as long as his body works.

He gives her food and water as much as she needs and takes what's left or eats trash. He refuses to sleep, to watch over her. He holds himself awake as long as nessecary until his body can't take it.

The Witches' Testaments, Masterpost

The concept for this project got stuck in my head some time back as a prequel of sorts to my Solarpunk Witch Story. The idea was to focus a bit more on the "punk" side of Solarpunk and paint a picture of the effort and rebellion that went into how that world transitioned from Cyberpunk dystopia to Solarpunk... well, not utopia exactly, but something better than it was and striving toward that dream.

And because that sort of thing is bigger than any one person and I had multiple worldbuilding concepts I wanted to touch on, I landed on the idea of writing it in the form of a series of interviews with various characters who lived through that period of change.

I don't know how many of these I'll actually get around to writing, but for now, here's a tentative table of contents that at least hints at some general ideas/prompts for me to fill out later:

Why Zekina and not Zina?

Glad you asked, phantom person that I use as a stand-in!

Zināʾ (زِنَاء) or zinah (زِنًى or زِنًا) is an Islamic legal term referring to unlawful sexual intercourse. (Wikipedia)

I think it would be disrespectful towards islamic peoples believes to use it as a ship name as well as considering the meaning “unlawful sex” of all kinds… I don’t think it would be a good ship name.

Meanwhile Zekina is only a name and surname in a couple of countries, so basically free for grabs! Let’s go with that!

I’ve had some really interesting experiences with the Johnlock AI-generated fics and gotten some great feedback that’s helped me to become a better AI user, so thanks to everyone who’s chimed in.

Since the Sherlock Holmes stories are so well known and I’m convinced ChatGPT received them as part of its training (due to its knowledge of specifics like 221B as well as certain phrasings), I wanted to see how the chatbot would do with creating its own original characters.

First attempt below the cut...

Full disclosure: Technically, this is the second attempt. I didn’t like its first response to my prompt,* so I regenerated the response without changing the prompt.

Prompt: You are an accomplished, best-selling author of popular fiction. Write a synopsis of your latest novel which includes a romantic subplot between two men. The genre can by mystery, thriller, science fiction, or dystopian.

Response: "Eclipse of the South" is a dystopian novel set in a future world where society has been devastated by war and famine. The main character, Jackson, is a former soldier who has lost everything he once held dear. He is on a quest to find a rumored utopia in the depths of the Southern wilderness, but is constantly thwarted by a mysterious and powerful group known as the Shadow Government.

Along the way, Jackson meets another traveler named Caleb, and the two men soon develop a deep and forbidden romance. As they journey deeper into the unknown, they find themselves constantly battling the elements, hunger, and their own fears. But their greatest challenge comes when they finally reach the rumored utopia and discover that it is controlled by the Shadow Government, who will stop at nothing to maintain their power.

With the help of a rebel group, Jackson and Caleb must fight to overthrow the Shadow Government and bring freedom to the utopia. But as they do, they also must navigate their complicated feelings for each other and fight to protect their love in a world that seeks to tear them apart.

* The first response was also set in a dystopia (not further specified) where a government official and a rebel fighter team up to bring down the corrupt government. That was basically all it delivered, and I was disappointed at the lack of imagination or indeed any point of interest. What I like about this second response is it’s given hints of backstories for both the setting and one of the characters, as well as the backbone of a more elaborated plot. I am already rooting for them and starting to become emotionally invested.

Prompt: a tomboyish (nonbinary?) "mother"/elder sister figure (Jo March/Anne Shirley, Bean &Co, "are you my mummy?," etc) and her merry band of found family street orphans... die tragically. (Explosion, exposure, whatever) And they get help to move on by a ghost whisperer, or whatever, so they move on to the afterlife. All together as a unit. They arrive at what should have been the Good Place and find it more like an angelpunk dystopia (think sci-fi dystopia but with angels instead of androids) than a heavenly utopia. The angels try to separate the group and force their bonds apart, force them into conformity and bland sameness, because that it what is rewarded Up There - uniformity, and of course unflinching unquestioning praise of the Deity.

Except Mamabear ain't having it. She's been through some shit to keep those kids alive and together, they're HER kids dammit, they're her family, and NO ONE in this or any life is gonna take them away from her. So she kidnaps befriends a rogue angel (Aziraphale, Castiel, etc - young Luci??) and forces said angel to basically lead them out of Eden, and potentially come along as a hostage. (This naturally ends up spawning a free-will revolution amongst the angels, but that may be secondary to the main plot.)

The prompt was about a utopian city having to create a false dystopia to appease citizens that don't believe the utopia to be as simple as it is. Anyways, so there's this mysterious mob boss lookin' guy. Runs a company who's responsible for the utopian state of the area. He sounds like a bostoner you'd find while eavesdropping on a few grunts' conversation in a Batman game, and looks like a cartoony business man to the point where you'd think he has a Superman haircut. You never see his face. Apparently he started the company because of the realization that the things he was inventing to fuel the weird shit he's into could be used to make a better world. He isn't exactly into it sexually, because "Last time I tried gettin' into it sexually the broad broke the bed and I broke my own dick off." That last part is assumed to be the reason why he's all metal below the belt-line.

Jehehehe, sounds real interesting, whom I assume to be Nex.
