When people are like Wei Wuxian was NOT suicidal it’s like. Ok sure. He just believed that his debt to the Jiangs should be paid with everything up to and including his life. And also that the moral and obvious thing to do in any situation is to put himself between anyone and harm's way. This is because he thinks he’s unkillable but he makes himself unkillable for the same reason he’ll die for a good enough reason: because it’s a way to have worth!

And then famously once everything goes to shit he does beg Lan Wangji to let him die as part of the moment where he is either destroyed by his own evil magic or lets his own evil magic tear him apart, a distinction I don't personally think matters very much at that point. Less explicitly textually, his mentally ill ass behavior after he gives up his core says to me that he wishes that he'd died honorably for Jiang Cheng when he had the chance and doesn't know what to do with himself since he hasn't.

Again I’m aware that he’s operating under a pretty specific set of culturally informed norms as a cultivator and member of a sect but like. TO ME. Everything about how Wei Wuxian conducts himself indicates that he has a box in his mind at all times that says 'in case of emergency break glass' and what’s inside the box is his own death. All the sound of mind actions of a man who has a normal and not suicidal relationship to death.

I saw your response to the poll and the meta you reblogged and wanted to ask your thoughts on wwx's use of guidao post resurrection. He does have the added benefit of a golden core at this point, but I always read his loss of control in his first life to be tied more closely with the outside pressure he was facing rather than his cultivation (i.e. the use of guidao is what allowed a loss of control to be so destructive but it didn't cause it). My thought was that if guidao was truly so temperamental then there should be consequences to wwx using it post resurrection, but there's not. However, you've probably read much more closely than I have, which is why I'm interested in hearing what you think 👀

my personal convoluted answer to the question is that both pre death and post res wei wuxian have the possibility to resurrect lan wangji in a fit of emotion (pre death moreso because of you know the deteriorating mental state), but pre death wei wuxian would not resurrect lan wangji on purpose, and post res wei wuxian would only do so with express permission, which I can't imagine lan wangji giving

Also, he figured out Lan Wangji liked him at least platonically pretty early on (like, I think he says as much during the cave incident). It's just everyone except Lan Xichen kept misinterpreting lwj's expressions and told wwx that lwj hates him

Okay AU where Wei Wuxian gets summoned back to life by like the Su Sect head disciple a couple years pre canon.

The head disciple idk maybe saw the curse backlash on Su Minshan and was Disillusioned By His Sect Leader’s Actions and maybe some other shit so he was like “I’m gonna get back the Yiling Patriarch so he can get revenge on the guy actually to blame for the hundred holes curse”

WWX is So Confused when he wakes up. Who the fuck is this guy. Where is he. What is going on.

Because there isn’t a conspiracy going on, he gets a very nice letter detailing his life and what he is to do.

So WWX has like fifteen emotions about Su Minshan being the start that lead to his death and, in a particular show of absolutely no self restraint, goes Yiling Patriarch on Su Minshan.

F to Su Minshan, he dies very quickly and painfully.

And here is where WWX should make his escape attempt, exact the person to find him is a baby disciple, seeing Su Minshan’s body, seeing WWX and long forgotten instincts kick in.

Five minutes later, WWX finds himself carrying The Baby Disciple to the Sect’s infirmary, yelling for a healer because their sect leader had a qi deviations and he couldn’t stop it and someone help

WWX is very confused this whole lie is apparently working. He gets the sense that the disciples’ curriculum is still being established. And while sorting all that out, he thinks about quitting the sect and running off with his new life except people keep handing shit to him because this newly established sect does not have a proper heir. It does have a Head Disciple who decided to commit suicide murder so WWX could be here.

He categorically does not want to be in charge. Unfortunately, until the second disciple toughens up, he’s gotta be

And it’s not like the whole sect is a mess? There are a lot of rogue cultivators who joined a sect that didn’t want to be as arrogant as the great sects. People whose sects were destroyed, too bitter to join any other established one, but willing to rebuild

They’re nice people. Leaving then hanging just feels kinda bad? So he can stick around for a while. And teach some lessons because WWX may not be a Lan but unfortunately he is that annoying genius that has to hear a song only once and fuck no, that’s not how that Lan song goes, you’re playing that incorrectly—

So he’s keeping himself busy instructing and conducting nighthunts and doing work he Did Not Sign Up For. He twitches when they call him sect leader. But they make advances and maybe they can figure out some musical cultivation of their own if they’re so intend on doing that. They can be better than just less good Lan, he thinks.

Now, however, here’s the thing. Su Minshan still obviously cursed Jin Zixun. And when a sect leader dies surprisingly, that draws attention, especially since he was so close friends with Jin Guangyao

WWX does not intend to drop the “by the way your friend did shady shit” thing so obviously but if the Jin keep pushing for shit now that the Su sect is suddenly getting a lot better very quickly, he’s gonna push back

Cut to: WWX, in the middle of teaching Baby Disciples some half-forgotten nonsense melody, freezing up as Lan “I am gonna I investigate the shit of the thing that started the events that got my one love killed” Wangji shows up in his classroom

The step Zhìjiàn takes back and away from the approaching legend is small, barely there at all, but it is one nonetheless. He wouldn't be able to describe it if asked to do so, mostly because how can a man like Zhìjiàn acknowledge doing something as rude as refusing proximity?

But it is there.

And it matches the look on his face awfully well.

He doesn't know what the look on his face is, but he can feel the muscles and skin of his face twist to accomodate it. Unfamiliar to him, then, something not quite like the easy and warm smile he grants people as a given, take his kindness for granted because you'll ever get anything else from him.

Discomfort.

The revelation is uncomfortable. Sits tightly in his chest, expands like a knot not so much unwinding itself as simply growing in size, using his innards to tie around itself and become bigger than what his ribcage can accomodate.

The kind of sensation that makes even the bravest of men falter and wonder if running away might not be the best option here.

He swallows thickly.

He's hyper-aware of his own face all of a sudden, and watching the look in Hanguang-Jun's eyes as he plucks it apart makes him avert his own gaze. He's not anyone's lover, never has been and likely never will be. Even the one person he's ever brushed his arm against with the slightest hint of intention is fading into a memory, where perhaps it's best to leave them, away from the trouble Zhìjiàn drags along with himself.

"Ah," is all he knows how to respond with for a while. He'd rather not, but he ends up wringing his hands anyway, ends up taking another step back anyway. It's not a threat he perceives, but Zhìjiàn has always prided himself with knowing how to solve a situation.

And when he can't come up with a solution... he'd rather leave it.

"Wait, Wei WuXian?" oh no.

Oh no.

Is that why people stop and stare? Is that why people accept his help when they can hear his voice and not see his face? When he wears hats to block the sun out and the veil fluttering before his features makes travelling easier? Is that men and women his age wearing the rich costumes of cultivation clans look terrified and confused, because they try to reconcile what they see with the man he is as opposed to the one he is not?

Is that why he's so often avoiding?

"The Yiling Laozu?" he asks, soft, the kind of tone of voice and volume used to utter a name imbued with as much misplaced reverence as fear. Zhìjiàn has no reverence for a man like that.

But Hanguang-Jun does?!

"You... your lover?"

Zhìjiàn stares. Hanguang-Jun can't possibly see something in that man that... but even now he seems to do. Even if it's Zhìjiàn he's staring at, he has the tautness of a man dealing with some kind of ache. He's terribly difficult to read, which is perhaps why the grip around his sword is so easy to spot, a spot of something in an otherwise perfect statue.

Zhìjiàn touches his nose, self-conscious, unaware. Too aware. He's never met the Yiling Laozu, but surely...-

"You must be mistaken," he bargains. "There's no way."

 he thinks the familiar stranger means something else — there are plenty of ways to help a man mourn and there are plenty of ways to actually cry over someone . hanguang-jun has never been a man to cry , something that always worried his older brother . he sat on the edge of the cliff for half a day and he did cry but perhaps xichen was expecting something greater . something bigger , he had no idea that lan wangji was fighting for his dear life every single second after wei wuxian fell .

 was he really fighting for it or trying to get killed under the onslaught of leash attacks that pierced his flesh over the same wounds , thirty three times ?

 the man's face hardens into something familiar to wangji , he's seen the same expression on his brother's face . many times , trying to force him out of his room . it was a surprise to see wangji leave the cloud recesses every morning and come back so late at night . his uncle must have had the most creative ideas on how he soothes the ache in his ribs but he didn't mention his displeasure much , and if he did , wangji remained unresponsive .

 when his quietness becomes too much and stretched too long , lan zhan pursed his lips ; he needs to give the stranger something , whatever that'll answer his questions . gently , he takes one step closer , tightens his grip on his sword and readies himself . to mumble , in the smallest voice possible ;

 ❛ you have the face of my dead lover . . . ❜  lover , was that what wei wuxian is to him ? lover , friend , troubled lover , trouble . he'd silence every disapproving mouth that targeted wei ying's unusual behaviors and unacceptable attitude , he'd silence everyone and listen to him giggle about the filthiest jokes that one could only hear in brothels . again , his gaze leaves the ground and settles on zhijian’s face — he takes his time devouring every detail on his handsome face . wonders if he'd be this desperate if they looked nothing alike , isn't it cruel to zhijian ? he feels guilty , when he notices the difference between zhijian's gestures and wei ying's ; you fall in love with souls , not faces .

 after another pause , he mumbles again ; ❛ wei wuxian . ❜  people , in fact more people than lan zhan would like to admit , knew the name of his dead lover . stained it with curses , with hopes that the yilling laozu won't appear in their bedroom if they speak his name . ❛ . . . even your nose . ❜

Honestly, it looks like at least after the Guanyin Temple, WWX is actively resisting understanding that JC still cares about him. JC takes a Stab to the chest for him, asks him why he didn't keep his promise & stay by his side, has a full breakdown over his sacrifice, gives him back Chenqing that he's kept for all these years, gets angry at JGY on his behalf, JGY spells out for WWX that JC is angry because he feels WWX was wronged, and that JC must have come to rescue not only JL, but WWX too, & targets WWX in the middle of the fight, fully trusting that JC would rush to his rescue, and he does. JC even thanks LWJ and holds a fallen WN. & I think one reason that WWX might be subconsciously fighting against getting all these clear signs and still avoiding JC might be that as much as he thinks he can’t handle JC’s wrath and blame and wants him to forgive him, he actually can’t afford JC’s forgiveness and unconditional love. Because he still blames himself for JZX’s and JYL’s deaths and even the massacre of Lotus Pier. & JC is the only one who has the right to be angry at him for all of these. He and JL. JC’s the only one who knew JYL & genuinely cared about her. WWX doesn’t think he deserves JC’s forgiveness. In fact, he looks terrified of it. Just look how quickly he turns from JC after thanking him for giving Chenqing back to him (Chenqing that after all these years still sounded like he had first used it. A very telling sign of JC's affection in itself.) Even though even JL who was watching from afar could say that JC had something to say to WWX:

JC is an outward force blaming him and being angry at him. WWX can tell him that he doesn’t know what to say to him when asked for an explanation, he can tell him that it’s all in the past. Let it go. he can beat the shit out of him. He can apologize to him and be judged by him. He can avoid him. Pretending that by ignoring him he doesn’t have to face the past. JC blames WWX and is harsh to him so WWX doesn’t have to fight himself and blame himself all the time. post-resurrection WWX keeps misinterpreting everything JC says and is unwilling to listen to him and get the hints JC keeps giving him about how he just wants WWX to come back home & interprets everything JC even doesn’t say in the worst ways he can bc it’s not so much about JC than it’s about WWX projecting onto JC. Because he thinks JC MUST be thinking that way. BC WWX thinks he deserves JC’s hatred. And judging by how he keeps misinterpreting JC even pre-time-skip, and in true WWX fashion fully believes himself to be right & doesn't second guess himself and or makes any effort to understand JC, & JYL is always the JC translator for him, from the moment she says to him that despite his tantrum JC is happy to finally have a playmate, to the moment she says that JC was the one who offered WWX name JL, and without JYL there to take their hands and pull them to meet each other in the middle the brothers can't communicate, Jiang Cheng has never been so much his own person in Wei Wuxian's mind as WWX's interpretation of him. WWX's shidi. An open book to WWX in WWX's mind. When he was not WWX's fragile shidi who needed protection (which @cerusee has written a great meta about here.), then he was WWX's betrayed, angry shidi who blamed him & resented him. If JC forgives him and continues to be his loving brother then it’s clear that the only one who can’t forgive WWX is WWX. and what is he gonna do about that?

MDZS Notes + Analysis — Chapter Two: “Reincarnation”

Three main things stood out to me when rereading this chapter: the theme of status, our intro to WWX, and the information we’re given about his state after death.

…Well, four things, but the other one will get its own post.

The theme of status is immediately introduced* with ‘MXY’’s treatment and the backstory of MXY and his mother, yet again showing just how well MDZS’s ideas are integrated into the text and how well it’s paced! You’re introduced to every important theme so, so early on. Two screenshots are analysed below:

(See: entitlement of the upper classes towards the lower classes, and how this can exist even between members of the ‘same family’; and arguably the idea of debts between a richer family and someone who was 'taken in'. There are a surprising amount of parallels between MXY and WWX, but I'll make my own post about that)

(See: once again, differences in status between members of the same family, and also the worse, and disposable, treatment of one daughter because she was "the daughter of a servant". Now, why does that phrase sound familiar...?)

Also, MXY's mother was sixteen when she attracted JGS's attention... if you somehow needed even more material to hate the guy...

We also get introduced to WWX’s personality(!), which immediately disproves the rumours from last chapter on how he'd cast the world into ruin:

(That's one of the first questions he asks after waking up – I love how he's so concerned about this! It shows us two important things, too: 1) Morality is important to WWX, and 2) Doing immoral things seems to be out of the ordinary for him. Both of these stand in direct contrast to the picture of WWX we were painted earlier!)

(Same thing here, along with showing us some of the (healthy!) pride WWX has – he wouldn't be offended at this if wasn't something he held as important within himself)

(I use this quote again, but here it's once again proving that the vengeful, evil WWX who'd sink the cultivation world into "nothing but chaos and despair" at the first chance he got... very much does not exist.)

(And finally, it's explicitly confirmed here that he's not the type to take exessive revenge and take pleasure in it... at least at this point in time, because. MXY definitely had reason to think this considering Sunshot!WWX, if everyone had been working from the truth. But importantly that isn't who he is now, and isn't who the WWX villified by the cultivation world was – imo that's including Nightless City, we'll get to that when I reach it. But note that actions during the Sunshot campaign aren't even mentioned in the prologue, because, shock, they actually helped the cultivation world win the war! Though that doesn't mean they weren't part of rumours + the WWX hatred mill later.)

Then some non-morality related things:

This is just really funny to me, with how the makeup being badly applied (:o) is enough of an issue to merit a thought – WWX I love you.

And then this way of thinking comes back a few times esp during the earlier chapters, enough to be noted I think.

Confirmation on WWX's status after he died – it's not anything new to point out, but this chapter does give us rare insights into what state he was in during the post-death, pre-rebirth period.

So, he was somewhat conscious, enough to be aware of what he was(n't) doing – seeking vengeance, haunting the living – and was seemingly in control of those actions. However, he was specifically a "wandering ghost" – his soul didn't pass onto the afterlife or "return back to Earth"** like the body-offering spell's caster's would. He was conscious that a long time had passed as well, and this long period of downtime where he could accept + deal with what happened in his first life is what likely allowed him to be so well-adjusted the second time round – even taking into account the remarkably good way he tends to deal with things in general (cue the "forgetting the wound when the pain fades" quote, it summarises WWX's mindset really well)***.

Also, as for resisting the summons from the prologue – I'm wondering how much was due to WWX's experience with resentful energy + general capability (if that affects it..?) allowing him to consciously refuse, how much was due to WWX not being the type to hold onto resentment (so possibly spells targeting ghosts, full of this resentful energy, wouldn't be as affected?), and how much was due to the relative lack of knowledge about how ghosts/resentful energy works compared to WWX. Or, if it was something else. Either way, achieving the impossible, that's WWX for you :D

It is interesting that he hasn't heard a voice in ages despite wandering, too – do ghosts just not hear the same way, or did he deliberately avoid areas with people? I could see both, the second being more likely, especially considering how many people wanted to summon him back for... less than stellar purposes.

*Well, reinforced – in the prologue, one of the things said about WWX is that "if not for the YunmengJiang clan’s adopting and teaching him, he would have been a hobo living on the streets", which is among the insults people throw. So of course, class-affecting-perception is tied to WWX from the very beginnning! But this is the first time it's actually explored, not a throwaway line.

**Though that may be what's literally happening to WWX's soul here – it is wandering around Earth – I don't think that's what this line refers to. There's a very good meta on how different translations handled that line, I really recommend it (tysm @/mxtxfanatic for finding it)!

***It would be very interesting to read a fic where it felt like no time had passed for him since his death, actually! Though the extremely stressful circumstances are gone, it would still be interesting to see a WWX for whom the Siege, Nightless City, Qiongqi Path etc are pretty recent – but only in fic territory, since I'm so, so glad we got the WWX we did in canon. Also, I'd love to see a fic maybe exploring some of his time as a ghost...?

Before the war, people would always hand off kids and babies to WWX when they saw him and needed a babysitter for a little while. A Jiang disciple would look away from WWX for like one minute while they were in the market, and when they looked back at him, he had a baby in his arms and at least one toddler on each leg bc so-and-so needed to run into one of the shops real fast, and could you just watch the little angels for a second? The people of Lotus Pier and the surrounding town just knew WWX as the go-to babysitter—your kid would be safe and sound w/ that guy, no need to worry, he’d protect them to the death if need be 👍 Even so, WWX didn’t let his trailing kiddos get in the way of goofing off and causing trouble w/ his shidi and shimei. He just brought the kids w/ ‘em! It actually works out very well. WWX is amazing at taking care of everyone. As Head Disciple he also has to keep track of his shidi and shimei and make sure they’re all okay on night-hunts, so keeping track of a few little kids and keeping a baby secured to his chest and back is just more of that (multitasking king). His shidi and shimei do get annoyed by the fact that more often than not when they go out with WWX just to have fun, they end up w/ an entourage of kids and a few babies trailing their Xian-gege, but WWX handles the situations so well and doesn’t let it keep them from having fun that they can’t really complain. They do roll their eyes and sigh—especially JC—about their kid-crazy shixiong. JC thinks he’s insane for liking kids so much. WWX thinks JC’s crazy for not liking kids so much. That’s one of their disagreements that they can never seem to settle and come to an agreement on. JC is one of the only ones who always pokes at WWX for all the kid stuff, and they go back and forth in their playful arguments in circles, poking at the other’s like/dislike of kids. JYL has had to stop them from going back and forth on this matter bc there is no end to it and has them agree to disagree many times.

Now for a more angsty part of this headcanon: Bc of all this, it makes going back to normal after the Sunshot Campaign harder than WWX thought. Bc of his demonic cultivation, people are whispering and talking behind his back, wary of him and sharing scary stories of what he did in the war. They’re fearful of him and his new powers. During the massacre of Lotus Pier and the Wen’s occupation of Yunmeng, a lot of the people and merchants in the area scattered in fear of the Wen Clan. The massacre itself wasn’t completely contained to the cultivators either—civilians got cut down too in the chaos, the Wen’s not caring if the people in their way were cultivators or not (also hc the people of Yunmeng trying to hide some of the Jiang disciples who were trying to flee but got killed by the Wen for it)—leading to a lot of casualties and running of the people living there. After the war ended and the Jiang returned to Yunmeng and Lotus Pier, there was a lot of turn over of who set up shop there. Yes, there were still some of the merchants that WWX grew up with, but there were far more newcomers, both just younger generations taking over for their parents/grandparents and people new to the area all together. As such, many people didn’t know the pre-war WWX who people left their kids w/ all the time. They didn’t know the WWX who whined and bemoaned about Madam Yu banning him from volunteering w/ kids and babies, and who snuck out to do so anyway. They didn’t know the WWX who would sit down by the river w/ the women to play with the kids while the women washed the clothes and worked, ending up w/ a flower crown on his head every time and wearing it proudly bc some little girl made it just for him. They didn’t know the WWX who would go out of his way to help you w/ anything you needed, cultivation related or not, whether it was a package delivered or a roof fixed, WWX would figure out how to help you. They didn’t know the bright, boisterous, kind, helpful young man and only the one traumatized and weighed down by the war (and loss of his golden core). 

WWX could handle the adult’s wary looks and subtle steps away from him, but what really weighed down on him and hurt him further, was that parents would subtly pull their kids behind them like he was a threat to them. And the hurt worked its way further into his heart and mind when, influenced by their parents actions, the kids started avoiding him and running away from him even when their parents aren’t around. The fact that even the kids are acting this way towards him, makes the whispers that he’s a monster worm their way deeper into his mind, making him feel worse and weighing him down further. WWX doesn’t try to help out w/ the orphanage that has so many more orphans after the war or w/ the little kids and babies, thinking that if they don’t even want their kids near him on the street, they wouldn’t want him volunteering (the truth of this sentiment is up to you to decide). Even when the older residents of the town try to tell stories of the younger WWX and how good he was w/ kids, many still don’t trust the new WWX—too wary of the resentful energy wafting off of him to trust him w/ their kids.

After WWX gave up his golden core and did the whole demonic cultivation thing and people started being wary and talking behind his back during the Sunshot Campaign, WWX kinda gave up on the idea of getting married and having kids. He still held onto the dream, but it became much more of a distant fantasy (even more so than when he was younger which was already really distant). He didn’t want to subject a woman or his children to the shadow people were casting on him. This, mixed with the trauma of all that happened, made him basically give up on the idea of a family. The trauma really weighed him down, and the result of such didn’t help w/ the rumors and talking which didn’t help his gloomy mood—which weighed him down even more in a vicious cycle.

When WWX ran away w/ the Wen to the Burial Mounds and was able to help w/ A-Yuan, he was very happy about it, and felt that caring for A-Yuan like he was was the closest he would get to being a father. I also headcanon that the Wen up there in the Burial Mounds w/ him practically adopted WWX and doted on him constantly. He loved them and they loved him. They were totally down for the idea of WWX actually adopting A-Yuan, but WWX got weird whenever the prospect was brought up (and I hc that they did try), deflecting the conversation bc he didn’t think he was good enough. A-Yuan still loved WWX as a father figure and WWX loved A-Yuan as a son. Granny Wen loved WWX like he was just another of her grandchildren. If WWX was younger, they would have officially adopted him as one of them, so as it is, WWX keeps his Wei last name, but when they set up a family shrine for their ancestors, they make tablets for WWX’s parents there too. WWX actually starts crying at this. (Again, it’s bc as I put in part one, WWX only ever wanted a family that he could actually call his own, and by putting his parents’ tablet in their family shrine/whatever it’s called, they were acknowledging WWX as part of their family.)

Headcanon about LWJ's character Arc.

Alright, this will be controversial. Feel free to share your thoughts. Do you think Wangxian would have married in a no War AU? Let me rephrase it. Would LWJ, pre-Sun Shot Campaign LWJ, that didn't experience neither War nor desperation. That was taught about his parent's history, and how love destroyed them both. That LWJ, that followed all 3000 rules and obeyed his elders.

If he was pressured to take a wife. Do you think he'd have agreed?

His one first true act of rebellion, I believe, is when he opposed his 33 elders and brought WWX to the Demon Slaughtering Cave. And afterwards, even then, he submitted to punishment. How did his sect drag him back to Gusu to get whipped, if he was able to both fight them off and protect WWX? How so? Well, they didn't manage to drag him back. The only explanation is that he went voluntarily.

Oh, he did what a good disciple did. He obeyed the rules, and if he didn't, he submitted to punishment afterwards, like he did his whole life. WWX's life mattered, but so did his duty. He tried to have it both ways, and as result he wasn't there when WWX died.

It's only afterwards that LWJ really took a stand, by choosing to raise an orphan despite his clan's protests. For the first time, finally. Or at last, that's how I understood his character arc.

So no, without this character arc, in a no War AU, there would have been no Wangxian, because, well LWJ wouldn't have fought for him. At all. Or perhaps he'd also try to have it both ways, by both marrying the woman his elders chose, and keeping WWX as his lover/concubine.

This is why JYL will always be special in my heart. For she always stood by WWX. My point is, while the potential was there, goody two shoes LWJ needed a serious reality check before raising the middle fingers to nonsensical rules. He needed to see, with is own two eyes, what is the justice of the sects and decide that it's not HIS justice, he'll take no part in it. I think WWX's death is the last straw, before learning to stop backtracking halfway. Let's not forget he tried to help WWX on the Burial Mounds without condemning firmly what happened. He let his clan save face, while visiting and buying a-Yuan toys in the market. It's like visiting a Nike workshop and giving candies to children, LWJ has good intentions but ultimately he does nothing to really help. The LWJ that grieved 13 years? HE would have told both his sect & the world to go fuck themselves and stayed by WWX's side.
