*Takes you by the shoulders* I ADORE character profiles and character trivia and likes and dislikes sections. I love knowing this ruthless, heartless, cruel man of a character has a childish dislike for mandarin oranges. I believe in the inherent beauty of all characters, no matter the background or moral stance, being made fundamentally human by assigning them insignificant culinary preferences. I stand by the supremacy of humanizing villains by giving them relatable tastes and trivial interests and ordinary hobbies. I treasure the hidden reminders that everyone is inherently human even when everything else we know about a character might suggest the contrary.

"A… a staircase?" Gale repeated, incredulity lacing his tone as his brow arched. He paused for a moment, trying and failing to fathom the reasoning behind such a peculiar tactic. "Did you wish to be stepped on? I understand some may enjoy such things, but typically there is some discussion beforehand among all parties involved."

For a brief moment, the lesson was entirely forgotten, swept away by the vivid absurdity of Alaara's staircase story. Yet the laughter in his voice remained gentle, and it only grew when he saw her succeed in casting the spell. Though her gestures were a touch awkward, with a few components misplaced or misemphasized, her determination had prevailed, and the little mote of light danced as if in celebration.

In truth, Gale found immense joy in the act of teaching magic. There was something deeply fulfilling about sharing his knowledge with someone eager to learn—someone who listened, who truly wished to understand. It was a joy he had not anticipated but one that filled him now, watching Alaara's eyes light up as her magic came to life.

"Well," he teased, allowing a smile to curve his lips, "typically the price of an apprenticeship and education in the arts of wizardry is quite a sum of gold. But in your case, I think I am willing to waive the fee—provided, of course, that you tell me more about this stair story in exquisite detail."

Alaara snorted at Gale's light jab. "I'll have you know I've saved my hide plenty of times without using Prestidigitation." Her tone was light hearted and the grin that she wore crinkled the corners of her eyes. "I have told you about the time I disguised myself as a staircase haven't I? That was a purely magic-less endeavour. Never mind it failed spectacularly, proving your point. I very much need magic in my life."

She continued watching the little mote of light flutter around in tempo with her music. Yes. She very much needed magic in her life. She meant spells of course. But in the moment just before speaking, her mind instantly and impulsively added on to that sentiment. She needed more than just the spells. She needed Gale too.

As he drew close to her and softly spoke, again Alaara wondered if he had any idea what he was doing to her. She wished that he would come closer still, getting rid of the faint gap between their bodies. Of course that didn't happen. He merely showed her the casting gesture and she was tasked with repeating it. Alaara stumbled over copying what Gale had done and managed just well enough to be successful. She was breathless as she watched her little mote appear, and not just because she was afraid if she breathed too hard it would disappear.

"You're a wonderful instructor," she replied, voice ever so slightly shaky. "I've a feeling that I could learn quite a great deal more from you if we spent more time together."

She let her spell end and let her hand fall back to her side. It brushed against Gale's and a jolt went through her heart. "I'd like to learn more. As much as you're willing to share with me."
