Friendly Wagers

Drew’s countenance boasts a jovial, gloating grin. Some people were naturally sore losers. “Can you prove it?” The strawberry blonde cheekily challenges. “As a cop, I believe you need to proof beyond a reasonable doubt that there was foul play. Proof, I’ll wager you don’t have. At least, not in this instance.” Nancy hadn’t even deigned to consider cheating in the first place. Mentally, she makes note that the parameters of honest play may be bent in the future to yield favorable results.
“Besides, you’re the one who furnished and inspected the coin. Did you not?” She prods, knowing that she indeed spoke true.
Luca, who had eagerly invited himself to witness the occasion, beams broadly from his perch as he observed his brother’s loss to a girl. In that moment, he swears Miss Drew is a chip off her old man Carson. He supposed one couldn’t live with a world renowned lawyer and not pick up a few tricks. “She’s got you there, Street.” Snapping his fingers, he jests. “I should have put money on this match while the going was good.” He’d do just about anything to make an extra dollar. After all, how much fun was going through life dead-broke?
Luca’s enthusiasm only fuels Nancy’s own. Buoyantly she bounces at Street’s begrudging acceptance of her tagging along. “Alright. Deal.” Her slender porcelain hand is eagerly extended towards him. Yadda this, yadda that is essentially what she hears when he outlines the parameters of her inclusion. “You act like I just started investigating yesterday,” she murmurs in complaint. “Don’t you think I know it is dangerous? I’ve done a million other things that could have gotten me killed. I’m still here. I’m tougher than I look.” Nancy actively insists.
The younger officer’s eyes keenly focus in on Street. “And just how do you care to explain this one to Hondo?” Clearly, he is already enjoying Jims predicament a little too much.
From over the cradled cup of coffee, a blonde pipes up. “He’s going to want to make her sign a waver.” McCabe’s azure orbs float over her before returning to the sports page of a newspaper splayed out before him. “I’d get her compliance in writing. Lawyers are always saying not to do anything without a contract.”
Nancy nails McCabe with a look of disdain. “I gave you my word. I’m good for it.” Her gaze swivels towards Luca and Street. “Come on, you have to believe me.” Street’s threat causes Drew to recoil slightly. “I think I can remember that---” If only for the colorful image it painted in her head.
“When can we go?” She prods quite eagerly.

god. GOD. the underlying anger in everything terry writes really IS apparent in hogfather bc fuck u mean this is how things should be? no the fuck it shouldn't. poor people shouldn't have to be satisfied with what they get, that's just fucking capitalism. i REALLY like that terry decided to use death as projection for what he thinks bc death doesn't know anything and it has to be explained to him and by it being explained to him it shows how fucking stupid those things are. bc ok here's this world where an equivalent of santa ACTUALLY exists and, because it mirrors our world, it's still unjust. santa actually fucking exists in this world and he could give ANYONE ANYTHING bc he's essentially a god and people gave him that power by making him up, BUT because ppl imagined him in a way that poor people don't get shit (like they usually do) and rich people get EVERYTHING they want, he exists like that. whereas death has seen the absolutely WORST of humanity and he STILL thinks that's bullshit and it's not how it should be, it's just how it goes. bc capitalism is always capitalism where there's money and the world will always be fucked up as long as there are oppressor to hold it up. like i just.

hot take maybe but the only reason most show runners/producers/writers/etc. age up the (female) characters from book to show adaptation is to overtly sexualize them and not face mass amounts of scrutiny for it.
put 13 year old daenerys next to 30 year old drogo and the audience understands that daenerys is a victim to him and not an equal. put 22 year old emilia clarke as daenerys next to 32 year old jason mamoa as drogo and they’re seen as a budding romance with a tragic ending (by the general audience) due to their on screen chemistry.
flash forward to today, and now we’re dealing with 21 year old milly alcock playing rhaenyra from 14-19 and how her relationship with (28 year old fabien) a mid twenties criston is seen as -morally acceptable- and not a result of a degenerate pedophile taking advantage of and grooming his charge. “ser criston protects the princess from her enemies, but who protects the princess from ser criston?” rhaenyra was 14 when rumors started speculating that she slept with an almost 30 year old criston. a criston who had know her since she was 8 and had been her sworn shield since she was 9. obviously seeing a teenager in the early stages of puberty next to a fully grown man would emphasize rhaenyra being THE victim, as opposed to the show having an 18-19 year old explore her sexuality and seek out ‘consensual’ sex with her peer bodyguard. the discourse has even reached the point where certain stans try to paint the much younger woman as the perpetrator and aggressor of this event, who forced the unassuming man into having sex with her.
i’ll even take this a step farther, and bring up how if they had shown a 19 year old alicent abusing a 10 year old rhaenyra it would be identified and mutually agreed upon as a reprehensible act on alicent’s part. instead they’re of similar age, so people can attempt to paint the picture as two women of equal standing hating each other, and not a much older woman bullying a motherless child. once again however, some stans even go so far as to try and paint alicent as a victim of rhaenyra, and not the other way around. further cementing this is how both versions of alicent are younger than both versions of rhaenyra, AND how criston is still played by an actor who is younger than older!rhaenyra despite his character being the same age as daemon in canon.
they know exactly what they’re doing too, considering they aged alicent down to give her that innate compassion one typically feels when seeing children being abused on tv (something that can no longer be applied to rhaenyra). despite that never being her story; *she* was the abuser, and rhaenyra was her victim. criston’s victim. it’s a nasty cop out, and i wish more people would call out how sickening it is to flip the switch and attempt to make abusive individuals more sympathetic than the *actual* victims of said abusers.
